  • An old Latvian folk song that is usually sung during the summer solstice from the album "LĪGO" (2008). Latviška Joninių, kupolinių (Rasos šventės) liaudies sutartinė. Latviešu Jāņu tautas dziesma.
    Lyrics in English:
I was walking along the road when I reached a river of blossom. I couldn't pass it. /
I took a handful of blooms, then I could pass it /
I was walking along the road when I reached a river of gold. I couldn't pass it /
I took a handful of gold, then I could pass it /
I was going along the road when I reached the Sun's manor. I couldn't cross it /
I took Sun's daughter herself, then I could cross it //
I was walking along the road, I reached the homestead of brothers, I could not get in /
The first brother opened the gates, I gave him the handful of bloom /
The middle brother opened the door, I gave him the handful of gold /
The youngest brother raised a chair, I have him Sun's daughter to be his bride for life //
    Dziesmas vardi - dainos žodžiai:
Teku, teku pa celiņu - Ėjau, ėjau per kelią /
Uztecēju ziedupīti - Užtikau žiedų upytę /
Nevarēju pāri tikt - Negalėjau per ją pereiti /
Ņemu ziedu pilnu sauju - Ėmiau žiedų pilną saują /
Tad varēju pāri tikt - Tada galėjau pereiti /
Teku, teku pa celiņu - Ėjau, ėjau per kelią /
Uztecēju zeltupīti - Užtikau aukso upytę /
Nevarēju pāri tikt - Negalėjau per ją pereiti /
Ņemu zelta pilnu sauju - Ėmiau aukso pilną saują /
Tad varēju pāri tikt - Tada galėjau pereiti /
Teku, teku pa celiņu - Ėjau, ėjau per kelią /
Uztecēju Saules muižu - Užtikau saulės dvarą /
Nevarēju garām tikt - Negalėjau pro jį pereiti /
Ņemu pašu Saules meitu - Ėmiau pačią Saulės dukrą /
Tad varēju garām tikt - Tada galėjau jį praeiti //
Teku, teku pa celiņu - Ėjau, ėjau per kelią /
Uztecēju brāļu sētu - Užtikau brolių sodybą /
Nevarēju iekšā tikt - Negalėjau įeiti /
Pirmais brālis vārtus vēra - Pirmas brolis vartus vėrė /
Tam iedevu ziedu sauju - Tam įdaviau žiedų saują /
Vidējais durvis vēra - Vidurinis brolis duris vėrė /
Tam iedevu zelta sauju - Tam įdaviau aukso saują /
Pastarītis krēslu cēla - Jauniausias krėslą kėlė /
Tam iedevu Saules meitu - Tam įdaviau Saulės dukrą /
Visu mūžu līgaviņu - Visam amžiui nuotaka //

My great-grandfather jumped ship from Latvia to settle in Australia. When I hear this kind of song, I have a kind of inexplicable homesickness and longing.

, techinically no for all areas of Latvia. For instance King of Jersika converted from Orthodox (long established in Latgalia) to the Crusader's version (Catholic) and rules as a vassal, ruling his area. His daughter married the Baltic German family
Also note that in Couralnd Latvians maintained a royal line recognized from the Crusaders times all the way to prior of the formation of the the Republic of Latvia. How does one "occupy" Latvia if some of the Germans were also those who once who helped Latvians to read and write in their own language (Stenders)?

Sublimely existential. I’m entranced by the wandering motioning themed within the narrative of the song’s lyrics. The gentle inter-weaving cadence of the pair of ebbing female voices casts an astral, dreamlike quality that beautifully serves the piece.

What is the noise I hear in the background? Is it throat (overtone) singing?

    • @Balticfolk
      @Balticfolk  10 років тому +6

William Pagan It is. That song is from this album and in the other tracks it's more evident that the background humming is indeed throat singing: www.upe.lv/english/ltmk16.html That singing technique is not traditionally found in Latvian folk music, only the song's lyrics and melody are. When it comes to folk music I generally prefer traditional renditions over those with some added innovations but in this case I feel that the singers didn't spoil the song with their interpretation but the opposite. I don't know how many hundreds of times I've listened and re-listened to this song, it's one of my all time Latvian favorites :)

That's so interesting! I would have never thought a Latvian group would have that in their music. Also, I appreciate the link!
