    This video demonstrates making a dining table. I mill lumber from a tree and use it to make the top. The rest is made from common lumber available at the hardware store. I turn the legs on the lathe to a traditional farm style. The rest is prepared with a variety of tools, all of which can be substituted with tools more common to the average person. Be sure to check out my plans and other videos to help you create a table of your own.

    That sense of accomplishment must feel awesome!! You slabbed the lumber then dried it then built the table. I suspect that if you were sent back in time to 1820 you could get by just fine. Great video. Thanks.

      I've milled some nice stuff, but the white pine was one of my favorite, mills fast, smells great, dried quick. It will feel even better as soon as someone buys the table!

      1820, without that chainsaw? The table would be slightly more work. Just add 3 or 4 days!

    Those curvy off cuts at 1.36 would be great for 'dressing' an English style porch or shed! Nature is amazing!

      A big fan of his show myself. He is the master of what he does. Right now I am so busy I don't have time to get more detailed than I am with my videos but it has always been my goal to make videos in his style. I like calm videos where the "host" touches on details as the project progresses. He nails it.

      Thank you, wish I could do more of them, means I'd have more free time! Just paused writing and checked out one of your videos, WW2 knife. Excellent video, looked like a TV production, you will definitely go far on UA-cam if you keep it up. I see you have some videos that have pretty high views then some with under 1000 which I know can feel kind of frustrating and a mystery of what makes one video go wild then the next do practically nothing. (no offense, some of what I consider my best videos flop while some of the "worst" do great). I think things go in waves too, I feel the interest in videos that could fall into the category of "making things" has changed, I don't know how exactly, maybe in the fact that so many people have started channels and production level has gotten so high. I feel the videos/channels that do best are ones that have something unique going for them, whether that be the host or the content. A good, quirky, clever, etc personality is common to the successful "hosts" or if you are simply really relatable to viewers. Kind of like Norm Abram was on New Yankee Workshop. He's one of the guys and had a perfect delivery. My channel here, has done ok, but is more of a hobby. I have a good following but have not had any wild success. My other channel, Homemade Home has done much better. I think my personality, topic, story, etc suits that kind of viewer more so than the viewers that watch the topics shown on "The Homestead Craftsman" channel. Being yourself and finding your niche is the way to go, otherwise, it won't be sustainable. Well there's some thoughts you didn't ask for, thanks for watching and look forward to seeing more of your videos.

    That is a nice well made table. Tenons and dowel pins are massively underrated. Dovetails would be the best for a table rail but are time consuming and should only really be used for the most detailed intensive projects.
    The next best is a tenon and dowel pin joint which are very stable and strong and look fantastic not that the average person cares about looks of joints.

    Simply fantastic again. Extremely well done as always.
    I would have preferred the natural double rounded swing of the tree as plate sides instead of cutting it away. I think it would have looked awesome. But this is only my personal kind of taste.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  5 років тому +2

      The live edge was nice but it would have been mixing styles. It would have also been the focus of the whole table and that wasn't what I was going for on this one. If it had a different base, the live edge would be fine, but I would use thicker slabs.

    • @Chr.U.Cas2216
      @Chr.U.Cas2216 5 років тому +1

      Dear@@thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      Thank you for answering.
      I mentioned that it would have been my personal kind of taste. It has nothing to to with the style of the finished table and isn't meant as criticism at all. The shown item is a wonderful piece of work but simply not my style any more. By fare more practical than a four or even 6 times concave rounded table for sure. And yes, I agree totally: Bigger/thicker slabs would be much better by doing this kind of natural design.
      Best regards

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  5 років тому +2

      Most of my tables are orders or will be sold in a store so I have to consider what sells well for the price point I want to hit. My personal taste isn't farm tables either. I would like to find or develop a market for some pieces that would be more fun to make in the future.

    • @Chr.U.Cas2216
      @Chr.U.Cas2216 5 років тому

      Dear@@thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      Yes. Of course I haven't thought that all these tables "wood" (would) stay in your own home ;-). And you have to make/deliver what customers mainly want to have for sure if you have to make money (that's what we all have to do mainly). And, as we are all able to watch, you deliver excellent quality.
      If not already there respectively available, maybe later on in your life there will be something like "table art" too!? Not only because you often have extremely wonderful wooden slabs (and it's more fun to do) I hope so and I wish you all the luck you need.
      Best regards
