5-Year-Old Girl’s Arm Gets Caught in Elevator

- A New Jersey family is suing an elevator company after a 5-year-old girl’s arm got caught in an elevator door. Zoe Garatziotis was rushed to the hospital after the incident at a building in Hoboken, New Jersey. She had 20 stitches in what a police report calls a "severe laceration." Her lawyer, Edward Capozzi, used the elevator in his building to show Inside Edition’s Steven Fabian what he says is the correct gap.
Lotion company should use this for their commercial.
It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets stuck in the elevator again.

Actually pretty basic. Not clever at all
She has a great brother. You can see him go and try to help her as soon as he realized what happened.
That is frightening. Please be cautious of allowing your kids to touch any device with the potential of entrapping your child. I am often perplexed at the airport as to why parents let their young children touch the conveyer belts at the baggage carousel.
I mean, to be fair, that feels like a freak accident. By that logic, doors, escalators, even drawers have the potential of entrapping.
TBH, there were a couple things concerning about this... the Gap of the door is one but to me which is probably an even more concerning is the SPEED at which the door opens... I've never seen an elevator door open so quick like that. That should be looked into in general.
Elevators should not have a gap there large enough for a whole hand to fit though
@@Teknomanslade2Yeah, something isn't right about the elevator. It was installed wrong or over time it wasn't checked.
Never say that. It will make things worse. It's an accident because that's what it is.

They should be mad at the design allowing for such parts to be incorrectly installed. If they have the correct profile, a big gap wouldn't be possible!
Right, couldn't be the parents who didn't tell the kids to stand back and keep their hands off the moving door.🤦♀

Dang that looked scary! Those moms immediately jumped into rescue mode!
To those saying "why didnt they just press the close button"-- they did, but the elevator sensed something was blocking its ability to close (the girl's arm) and thus it kept trying to open.
Elevators can only close after they open...
In some elevators a recording says, stay away from closing doors.
You not suppose to stand close to elevator doors.
The thing is the door wasn't closing it was opening, but I get what your saying in regards to safety.
They do not. Unless it's super expensive.
At most, it's supposed to keep you from pinching your skin, not ripping off your arm.
This also implies for the doors on trains, subways, and buses.
I have never in my 69 years heard a recording in an elevator say that.
I have heard it say "going up" or"going down".
Moral of the story: Never put your hand on the elevator door when it is about to slide open.
And never lean on an elevator door, cause it can easily open between floors.

Putting it on the list of a million things to tell our kids. It's getting really hard to remember and enforce all of these rules on a daily basis.
Oh wow. Pile that up on the 1000 things we should do. In which part do we just chill and be parents.

sueing the elevator company is crazy when u cant watch ur kids properly not the elevator companys fault parents responsible
I agree with you. Keep your hands off and stand back! It's not the fault of the elevator company!
Im now curious, who leans on elevator doors?
Small children?
Do you not know a single child?
Better question, is what kind of parent allows their kid to lean on doors?
Same with trains and buses
Although that gap is really big I don’t know why
Pay attention to your kids you should always make your kids stay away from the door and stay in the back of the elevator
Don't always count on that. In the end, parents can't control everything. Hence why it's called an accident.
they said that the elevator door is not up to code, this was an accident waiting to happen. you don’t have to blame women for everything.
Yeah the sueing was unnecessary so I blame the mother for not keeping an eye on her child 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah my parents would always make us stand at the back of the elevator when we all got on. You can't prevent everything as a parent but you have to also think a couple steps ahead to avoid catastrophe.
I don’t have kids but “always”? Use logic
I was screaming, get OUT of the sensor path and use the CLOSE button !
I was thinking the same thing.
But what if that didn't work and it started going up or down once closed. Too risky imo.
“But what if the elevator went up or down once closed” the fact 8 people liked your comment… fully unable to grasp that if the door is closed… her arm isn’t stuck… it’s it being opened that’s got it stuck. There is no risk in OPS suggestion. The risk was to not try that and just yank on her.
@@leahnicole155 you can't be sure of that, tho', not 100%. Lots of things could've gone wrong and what if there was any other factor involved that made it so her arm wasn't freed after the doors closed and the elevator started moving again?
Much better to keep the situation stable than to risk having to deal with other complications.
Elevator close buttons don't do anything in the majority of elevators, look it up, they're fake.
This is why my father always told me not to lay my hands on stuff in public
It's a good thing elevator doors don't move with the elevator, or this situation would be a million times worse.
This is why I just climb the outside of the building.

It's not really the elevator manufacturer's fault. The little girl's tiny hand got stuck in the small space between the door and the outside frame. It's a freak occurrence, however her hand ended up there we can't really see. It was a scary moment and I'm sure that kiddo will never play "will my hand fit" ever again. That's Freaking scary. Never seen an elevator with a huge gap like that on the door. But Why the family only sued the elevator company? They should also sue the owner of the building
Ridiculous. Why should they sue anybody for their own stupidity, negligence, & failure to properly supervise that child? Who allows their children to place their hands & limbs on moving mechanical parts of transportation equipment? What if that child stuck her fingers in between the steps of a moving escalator, or jammed her hand in a slamming car door - would you think the companies that manufactured those people-moving devices should be sued for the parents’ negligence in those instances as well? This mother is trying to push her failure onto someone else - ironically, further compounding her failure. Her children deserve pity, but not for the physical injuries she allows them to endure.
So escalators have a code that it has comply with. So that is a kid put its hand down it wouldn’t eat the whole hand or fingers. A car door is controlled by a person so you assume the risk and have human controlling it. This was an accident that shouldn’t have happened in the first place. It’s negligent. The door should have some kind of safety on it. This is something that should be seen as a risk. This is not just about money. This little girl has been disfigured. The parents had to pay the hospital bills co pays. For something that shouldn’t have happened. If it was to be installed to the codes to prevent this.
Oh, and sue the carpet company while you’re at it because it was the flooring inside the elevator.
suing the building is a dumbass idea.

Why couldn’t they just push the button to close the door?
the door likely needs to fully open before it responds to further input.
Have you ever pushed the close button on the elevator while someone is between the door, it doesn't close right? Not that hard to realize that elevators have sensors that prevent the elevator from closing if someone is in between
Well the door was stuck halfway ….
And usually the door has to fully open in order for that button to work
They couldn't. The girl's arm was stuck between the door, so the elevator door was stuck immediate after her arm was trapped
@paulo0651 She wasn’t standing where the door could hit her. She was standing *beside* it. I dont think she would have stopped it from closing.
This is why you teach children to back away from doors; it doesn't matter the type of door it is.
Or... people could just do their job correctly...
@crystanick2697 or some parents need to do their jobs and teach their children basic safety precautions, i.e., never lean on doors. I guess parents (like yourself) lack the innate basic instinct to, at the very least, try to protect their children from harm. The mother watched as her daughter leaned on that door. If you can prove it wasnt up to standards when you bought it.
The difference is that it's more your fault than the furniture company's that you hit the table. There is also a difference in the amount of damage caused. People shouldn't bear the burden of refraining from touching elevator doors.
