Here in Rio, when someone spots a confused lost child, we put them on our shoulders and everybody around starts clapping hands until the parents are found or are directed to the sound of clapping. It usually works really well.

Sadly you have to in some cases. I once saw a kid playing with an escalator somewhere at a busstation. The parents were nowhere to be seen. Im glad I decided to turn around to tell the kid that what he was doing could be extremely dangerous and he should probably stop playing with it before he gets stuck in the moving escalator.. I could totally relate to what you went through, I had lost my daughter in the supermarket and I was frantic, but my oldest son had found her underneath the fruit stand where she was hiding at. She was under there eating some fruit and I was so happy to find her safe and sound, but I was mad as well as relieved to have her back safe! When the store found out that she was missing they automatically closed the doors and they started looking for her, they had also called the cops but by the time they arrived she was safe and sound, they told my daughter to stay with your mother. My daughter told them I was but I got hungry and I wanted some fruit to eat, then she told them my mom won't buy me some fruit so I got some myself! By then I got mad because I had some fruit already in the shopping cart and I told her that she had to wait until I paid for it, but she was mad at me for telling her that she had to wait that's when she helped herself to the fruit. The store told me that I didn't have to pay for the fruit that she ate and they were so glad that she was alright. But yeah that was a scary thing that I had to go through and I know that it's something that people have to go through and it's the hardest thing that anyone has to go through when they lose a child and I pray for the families that have lost their child/children.

When I went to Belgium, my family and I went to the beach with them every day. One of the days, we saw that no one was in the sea. We got a little suspicious and decided to ask a lifeguard after 5 mins. Apparently, 2 girls aged 10 went missing. They had a hotel right near the beach and went out by themselves early in the morning. We had news that we could go in a slight bit as one was found but the other was somewhere missing on land. We never heard about the other girl so even now, me and my mum are worried about what had happened.

On the beaches of Brazil, every time a child gets lost from their parents, everyone starts clapping their hands, to get the attention of the parents or whoever is close to an unaccompanied child. That way we stay tuned and stop what we're doing until parent and child meet again. It is a resource that we found to help, as the beaches are very crowded and many children end up losing their parents.
If the child is not finding his parents, an adult puts it on his shoulders and walks along the beach, while the clapping continues, so that the parent already pays attention to the location of the children and identifies if it is one of their own.

That is literally genius. If this was implemented in more places such as theme parks or all beaches there would be so much less lost children that take the attention of people who are supposed to be watching the water or other guests.

In Germany at most patrolled beaches children get silicone armbands with a number carved in. Parents can insert their mobile number and the name of the child in a list at the lifeguard tower and when lifeguards find a child without parents the lifeguards can watch up the mobile number of the parents in the list with help of the matched number on the armband and can contact the parents to bring the child back to them.

I know this is an old video, but here in Brazil we have a technique of sorts: whenever someone finds a lost child, they clap and the other people around start clapping as well, so if you've a lost kid, you can just follow the bunch of people clapping and find them.
I always thought this was common practice in the whole world, then I found out it wasn't because I saw news in English mentioning the clapping as if it was an amazing/inventive thing (we've done this since I remember) lol
