You totally saved my bacon! I kept deleting the Photosweeper (Trash) album and a day later all my duplicates were suddenly back...derp! Your explanation of selecting all the album items, moving them to the trash, and then select all, and CMD Delete was genius!! Appreciate the help, and my dups are now actually gone. ;-)
A question, if I may. I have several libraries, let's call them USA, France, UK, Italy and so on. When in France I may have taken hundreds of photos, but only the best will be put in the France album. That means there may be scores of similar photos of, say, the Eiffel Tower; but only one of them will have made it to the album. If I then attempt to de-duplicate the Library, how can I establish which of the duplicates I am offered is the one I want to keep (because it is in the album)?
I can only assume the PhotoSweeper software will allow you to look at the Caption or Keywords that you can add in the info tab for all photos. So if you add a description to the photos you definitely want to keep (in each subfolder), when you see the group of "duplicate" photos in PhotoSweeper, or duplicates in the main Library when casually scrolling, make sure to examine the descriptions of the duplicates to always keep "the best" one intact. The downside is that you'll have to take the time to add descriptions to a lot of photos first to protect your best shots.
@@jim9685769 Brilliant. Never thought of that approach. I'm so grateful. I'll work out a way of adding the words that might serve more than one purpose.
Peter, there's an even better way to do this... I emailed the photosweeper folks about this exact question and they told me a great approach. Shoot me an email to solutions@macinhome.com and I will reply with the info no charge. - Lucas
You are very helpful, but I'm so frustrated because when I put a photo - which I know is already in Mac Photos - into Mac Photos, it does NOT give any indication it is a duplicate. My system is macOS Catalina - version 10.15.7 and it's an old iMac late 2012. (I have bought a new laptop, but am not using it yet). I just want to get rid of duplicates!!! Nope... you would need to do that with an app outside of Photos. I would export unmodified originals out of the Photos app, rename them, then bring back into Photos.
Once marked photos were moved to Trash (PhotoSweeper), can you put them back in the photo library? I changed my mind abut the preferences (didn't realize the first time I used this that you could do this) and want to start all over again.
They are still in your main library… So if you just go into that album, press command a to select all, and press the delete key, it will just remove them from that album and they will all still be in the library.

Question. I'm in the process of scanning all of our printed photos to make sure we have all of them digitized. (Thousands, both printed and already in Apple Photos.... this is a huge project.) I'm assuming that this app, particularly with method #3, will match up scanned photos with those we downloaded digitally, and we can continue with the trash process from there.... yes? Or?
Thank you for this information. I purchased the PhotoSweeper app, but I don't see anything about a Loose Photos folder. Is this something I need to set up apart from having the app? Thanks again!
I think I just called it a loose photos folder because I was talking about photos that live outside the Photos app, in folders on your Mac. So when you open the photo sweeper app you can drag a regular folder of photos into the app for duplicate processing. What are you trying to do? Compare what photos with what? - Lucas

Oh it might be because you aren’t fully deleting them. Photo Sweeper moves them into an album, then you need to delete them from the album… press command-a to select all in that album and command-delete to fully delete the photo instead of just removing it from that album. Then you go into deleted items and “delete all”.
