Battlefield Las Vegas had lots of barrels and data on barrels and they concluded that CHF chrome liner barrels on average are lasting twice as long as the nitrided barrels. That being said if your nitriede barrel lasts even 10-15k rounds that 7k worth of ammo you can either get a free replacement from these studs or pay the 300 dollars for dd barrel once it’s shot out.

Ya chrome handles heat a little better than qpq, especially when applied to a hammer forged barrel. And since battlefield Vegas is mag dumping in full auto all day, then it makes all the difference.. But when it comes to semi-auto guns the difference is pretty negligent unless all you do is mag dumps every magazine as fast as you can. So for the purpose solgw sells their guns people really won't see the benifits of being charged more for chrome. It makes sense

My take on CL vs nitriding is overall heat generation. What is the rifle's use, what is its barrel profile and thus how much heat removal will the barrel need. An HBAR profile barrel with CL is a solid magdump machine all day whereas a pencil profile nitrided barrel is likely not. Basically I take into account other factors before deciding on the finish, not that I have the data to back it up. I like either to be honest, depends on what the gun is for. I'll say this, there is a ton of data to still collect to get the bigger picture of one vs the other.

    • @draggboy
      @draggboy 3 роки тому +2

@@chriskilburn261 That's good to hear. GunThots, small channel on YT, does quite a few reviews on uppers and they are super harsh on companies about gas port size. They destroyed BCM for their overgassing. Rosco was kind of in the middle. SOLGW was towards the top of their list but it was an older SOLGW upper and it didn't fare well against the Geissele uppers they tested, which is surprising because people love to hate on Geissele. I'm happy about that because I have a Geissele Super Duty and it is such a pleasantly gassed gun. I'm also happy with my 10.3" Ballistic Advantage barrel but I just started building a 13.7" SOLGW upper starting with their barrel and I have high hopes for that. Hopefully it's gassed as well as Geissele.

@@draggboy I remember they (GunThots) shit on a lot of barrel makers for over gassing, but you have to remember who is buying most of these cheaper barrels and uppers. Its people who also buy cheap ammo. They reduce customer complaints by making the gas port larger b/c people use shit ammo.
They shit on the B.A./Aero barrel for being over gassed, but don't take into account that they're using the baseline/consumer level barrel. When you buy a Hanson profile B.A. barrel you get a significantly reduced gas port and a pinned gas block. The port measured to .054" on my 13.7" B.A. barrel. Shoots like a dream. They use .078" (or at least used to) on everything else.
My point is that yes, a lot of barrels are over gassed but its literally our fault for them being that way b/c everyone wants to use Tula/Wolf/Barnaul ammo and they expect it to work and when it doesn't they call customer service and whine. Hence, larger gas ports. If you want proper gas port sizes then buy a barrel that has one and use the proper ammo.

@@draggboy I saw the video and was wondering how they quantify overgassing. Brass ejection? Gas to the face? Recoil impulse? Combination of everything?
The testing didn’t seem standardized; what ammo did they use, was it the same for all the tests, did the charging handle make a difference, did they try suppressed vs unsuppressed, different suppressors etc.
Honestly the video seemed like amateur hour. Could have been a lot more concise and informative without all the B roll

If you have a good Criterion barrel with good chrome lining, you'll get good groups and be able to do mag dumps, etc. Longevity will be premium. However, modern 4150 CMV nitrided barrels hold up well in second-place in terms of abuse/round count under heat. Stainless (416R) doesn't hold up as well as far as round count, especially with high cyclic rates, the metal is softer and will not last as long. But, 416R can give you the best accuracy because the bore is easier to machine to better tolerances for precision shooting. A good compromise is 416R QPQ, which will extend barrel life 2X under slower cyclic rates. But even modern 4150 CMV nitrided barrels not only offer great longevity, but can offer 1 MOA or better accuracy when manufactured right. CHF barrels can offer the same between the two but longevity is subjective with higher cyclic rates. The bottom line is, unless you plan on shooting $10k worth of ammo through one barrel, you may never know. Buy a quality barrel from a reputable manufacturer and 99% of the average shooters will tell you that the barrels do everything they want them to. The 1% with the giggle switch might prove us wrong though lol.

Nothing compares to 416SS when it comes to accuracy. The closest you will come is some of the 14.5 Colt SOCOM barrels. Stainless does have a shorter service life but we are talking 10s of thousands of rounds. If you can afford to shoot one out you can afford to replace the barrel. Why sacrifice any accuracy? You pay for the ammo, and $300-$400 for a new match grade barrel is less than 1/10th of what you would have to spend to shoot it out using the cheap shit ammo.
People that shoot steel case and cheap crap ammo may want a barrel that lasts forever because they are cheap and the results they achieve are far below the standards that professionals demand.
      for my 10.3 13.7 14.5 and 18" I only shoot Federal TRU 69 and 77, and Speer GoldDot 62 and 75 in .223
For 5.56 its Black Hills 69gr and MK262.
If you want to fuck up a barrel quick shoot some of the M855A1

I love SOLGW, great Texas company and I love sending them money.
But we'll see how well this video ages in the next few years. It wasn't too long ago Mike railed on BCGs on P&S swearing SOLGW would never carry stupid nickel coated BCG and Gucci calibers. And how they had the best BCGs because they listed the ''specs''. Now they carry all those, and without specs, and I'm glad to have one in my 6.5 Grendel.
The only reason not to carry CHF barrels is cause they don't want to pay for the expensive machines. Which is totally respectable. And offering a warranty to replace a barrel knowing most people wont shoot 100 rounds in its life time is a solid business decision. But trying to prove non CHF last as long as CHF is just snake oil. SOLGW likes to emulate and learn from Hodge which is also great. But Hodge uses CHF, and ironically for people who like to boast specs and bash just as good brands my 3 Hodge CHF FN barrels spec out identically to my PSA CHF FN barrels. Just sayin.
So in the ultimate irony SOLGW has become the ''We're just as good'' freedom brand, while PSA (if you stick to FN barrels) is actually materially and specs out identical. But I bet give SOLGW another 5 years of the success they very much deserve, they will be happy to offer CHF barrels.

Lots of Marines died because the military turned-down chrome lining, and didn't even supply cleaning kits until it was clear barrels were corroding so bad that guys were dying in large numbers. While the upfront cost to buy CHF equipment is huge the unit price after the fact is much less, that’s pretty much the only reason the technology exists. The hype behind hammer forging and the fact that they’re usually chrome lined is why they’re always so much more expensive.
That’s why the original AK-47 originally went from button rifling and a milled receiver to hammer forged and stamped.
I’m surprised by your findings though, chrome is much harder than 4150.

Yup hammer forging is not only cheaper in the long run per barrel, but it also makes more of them faster.
Fyi, the chrome lining is harder than 4150, but he's talking about a 4150 barrel that has been QPQ'd (melonited/nitrided) which brings the surface hardness of the 4150 barrel steel very close to that of chrome lining. But in my own findings I've also found that chrome lined barrels can handle heat better than the same barrel material that is instead QPQ'd.. This only matters in heavily fired guns that get super hot tho where it will last longer, otherwise it's pretty negligent in semi auto which this dude sells.

For a chrome lined barrel it's supposed to be DMR accurate. But it reflects in the price as well.
I'll be honest I think barrel material and firing schedule more than anything will determine the life span between QPQ and chrome lined barrels.
Sionics medium contour barrels are chromed and DMR accurate as well. I have two 16" inchers that love 77 grain match kings rolled by whomever. Black hills, IMI, Privi, you name it. They both are accurate.

Criterion barrels are regarded as some of the most accurate barrels out there. They are chrome lined, not QPQ. So the whole chrome lined not being as accurate doesn't hold water. It's all depends on how the barrel is manufactured.

    • @CoryHobbs2178
      @CoryHobbs2178 2 роки тому

Depends, Criterion has perfected the chrome lining and does hand lapping.
Centurion on the other hand uses a hammer forged barrel with a tapered bore. The tapered bore, for lack of a better word, swages the bullet and negates the chrome imperfections. My Centurion and Criterion are both capable of sub MOA with match ammo. Both are double chrome lined. Centurion gets the edge for being CHF'd and the tapered bore gives a slight boost to velocity.

Guys, you can't change the laws of physic, break them or abolish them. A CHF barrel is hands down the strongest barrel structurally because of the forging process of applying huge amount of pressure to the metal to form it whish makes it more dense, align the molecules, stiffen barrel, very concentric chamber and bore etc... 99% of civilians have no use for chrome lining unless you have a full auto gun, shoot all in a session or live in an environment with the element speeding up corrosion. Barrels were CHF for mass production and strength for machineguns. So in conclusion 99% of civilians see no benefit from chrome line barrels and CHF barrels.

Maybe if the hammer forging somehow magically made the barrel resistant to tolerance loosening after the chrome has left then it would matter. Hell, even offshore equipment companies are nitriding tools and not chroming them. Of course this is all moot since most Americans will say their gun is "proven" after 1000 rounds over 10 years.

The company ended up using was Centurion arms and they use some of the highest grade 4150 machine gun steel Barstock and I’m not sure if they do the double chrome lining I do appreciate that they really think about the ID and the OD of your barrel and gas block It is extremely tight need oil in a mallet to not get back on after you have to obviously take it off but it has a notch tab that (kind of makes it super 88 proof if they don’t know how to line up a gas block it slips into that notch and you’re good to go ) also has dimples under that The block does not use it only needs a pin and since it’s extremely low profile it’s pinned on the top of the gas block of the barrel as there’s more gas block material in that area once you knock your gas block back on
The other thing with centurion arms m4 heavy barrel
Is it really besides the gas system being tight is they use cranes bad gas port size actually there is is in the acceptable range on the low end at .061 and the crane I believe is .0625 but I had mine checked at between .061 and two so .0615 using a geissele super 42 heavvvvy triple bladed wire spring and their H2 buffer now I had it come with polish feed man so also there’s a little extras you add on
And it’s centurion arms not criterion people always makes up centurion and criterion
It’s ensuring in arms that’s who you want the owner is a Navy seal Monty McClair former seal and on all that barrels they say that being $500 or so for mine basically hey it deserves high power quality ammunition especially being crane spec because as sons of liberty gun works Mike says the seal teams don’t use who is it PMC bronze Winchester white box and it’s true you wanna give it a good ammo if you can’t get Black Hills try IMI but I get beautiful sharp 4 o’clock injections and with a canine I honestly have to say it’s not that bad and I’m left-handed for fucks sake yes radian Raptor a socom rc2 not as bad as others at all especially doing build drills and stuff but I try to shoot at my natural respiratory pause as I was trying to years ago and it still sticks to today where it’s almost subconscious
4150 CMV machine gun barstock CHF with double chrome liningI don’t think you can really go wrong especially if it’s going to be in a select fire basically it’s similar to saw barrels as fin double chromes them
