For estimating the second-row tiles, it turns out that (for a circular mirror) each row only requires about 6 (actually 2*pi) more tiles than the previous row! This is why multiplying by 1.5 gave you such an overestimate. Your mirror is an oval, not a circle, but this method still gives a good estimate: you would have needed 74+6=80 tiles for the second row, for a total of 154 tiles.
I love watching you go through the creative process - so many video creators only share the finished work, and following your decision-making is so fun and relatable.
If you lay a piece of plastic wrap over the slab before you cut it and just cut the clay through the plastic, you won't have to smooth the edges. Just lift the plastic every row so that it doesn't get pulled too tight.
If you ever make a similar project and do not want to use square tiles and still without any math, I might have a solution for you: make a continuous clay frame around the object, and then either just make carvings in the clay so it looks like tiles, or cut the clay frame to actual tiles of whatever shape and put them back together after the kiln. But that is really just a technical alternative, I think the square tiles look great!
What a beautiful result! The grout around the outside looks great. I think the blue turning out darker than expected makes the finished product look very elegant. Hope you're having a nice cozy December so far!
I have a suggestion if a similar problem comes up in the future, you didn't need to do any math, you could have just put the square tiles against the mirror and measured the angle of the wedge, and that would tell you what shape to make your tiles
Congratulations! Mirror mirror on the fire place… 🤩 let me tell you, I was immediately thinking „yea use the grout on the outside - give the paint back“ ☺️ best greeting from Munich ❤
I have an idea on how to chamfer the edges quickly: before you cut the tiles, get a tool that has a diamond shape (like for if you were cutting a v groove out of your clay. Place the tool on your 2 cm mark as deep as you want the chamfer, then place your straight edge parallel to the line you want to cut. Cut your v grooves first, and then separate the tiles with a knife. Might still need to wash it with a sponge but maybe you won't.
I love the blue/black color combo! In terms of A vs B, i rather thought that alternating in 4 (well, 8 tiles in total) tile sets would look amazing. So A for 4 tiles, B for 4 tiles. Something to consider if you do another project like this
awesome, it looks great on the white wall. Your a natural 😊. Great idea, looks good. Another project ticked off, What next? And what are you going to do with the extra 100+ tiles you made, you've got to come up with an idea, how about a bowl with a tile inlay or coasters to sit your coffee on while sitting down by the fire. Can't wait for. Ext video x😊
You always make me want to make a similar project! It's so very beautiful and your thriftiness is "chefs kiss"! I can't wait to see more of your projects.
Can you use a very flat shallow pan with a thin layer of glaze to avoid the effect of particles falling to the bottom of the bucket? This way you could just lay the tiles on it and not even wetting your fingers, would it work? Also, B was my choice! Congrats, it looks beautiful
Ich liebe Deine Art der Arbeit und Deine Ideen die mich sehr stark inspirieren. Weiter so! Und der Spiegel ist einfach amazing. Ich mache mir bestimmt auch etwas in der Art. Danke, dass es Dich gibt!
I do feel like renting a kiln can still be a problem for some people. You still need transport, and unless it's walking distrance or you have a car… it's likely gonna be very expensive and/or labour intensive to get you and your pieces there. Good option for people who have transport, but there's no flawless solution.
Thats pretty neat actually aaand you made it look so easy! Also I love the vibe you got going on in your home👌 would love to see u do more diy home decor in the future✨
Cool project, but I kept wondering why you made so much work of measuring with a ruler when you could have made a 2cm wide strip of wood? Easy to criticize, I know. Thanks for sharing!
I love this idea. I had asked my studio instructor about making 4 x 4 tiles for my bathroom floor. He said that it’s very difficult because they end up getting warp and not uniform. Thoughts?
hmm I dont think it would be too hard. The bigger the tile, the more likely it is to warp, but just make sure you’re keeping them flat as you handle them and dry under pressure. Should be ok! It’s worth making a few sample tiles at least :)
Hey I am in love with this color 😍 I am newbie in this field from India , could you please help me out regarding how to fire glaze as I am having clay of 1260degree and I have no idea which kind of glaze should I apply 😅
haha that's what I was talking about in the beginning of the video. Too lazy and too much math. I would have to account for shrinkage of the clay, too!
You remind me of a pottery Simone Giertz 🥰
So glad I'm not the only one who thought this!
OMG she does! 😊
Watching that glaze dry in the time lapse was SO satisfying 😱
haha I think so too :)

haha you're way smarter than me :) and I was proud of myself for realizing it would be more tiles!
Black on the outside! Oh. You have already chosen haha
whoops!

Thank you so much! That is great to hear :)

so satisfying that the tiles fit perfectly around the Mirror!
yes! that was such luck 😅

Thank you! Yes I was very lucky with the kiln gods in the end🙏

haha the best decision 🙌
I like version A with black on the outside, but i usually make wrong decisions, when combining colors 😅
hahaha oh no! It was a 50/50 shot. Maybe you were right?
! Right now I’m doing the same project in my studio! Awesome! I found my sister ))
Awesome!!
I’ve been wanting to learn how to make frames for photos and other artwork. 🖼️
This can totally work for that too! Sounds gorgeous

I absolutely love the blue!
thank you! It never leads me wrong 🥰

oh I hadn’t considered that! great idea :)
What a cool idea and a lovely result! I love how the blue tile turned out as well ☺️
thank you so much!

Lovef it. Whole bathroom next!
yeeahhh!

Congrats, it looks beautiful
You have 1 billion times more patience than I do! ❤
Woah, turned out marvelous!

I like the result :)
Would it be possible to bevel the big leather hard clay before cutting it in tiles? or does that create other problems?
Lovely! Your glazing process is kind of like breading a chicken cutlet: One clean hand for dry, one "dirty" hand for wets.
omg haha
I think the mirror is beautiful. Well done you. Silly question. Where did your beautiful birds fly away to?
theyve got a prime spot in our hallway now 🙌❤️

Thanks for your kind words 🥰

thanks! Definitely more to come! 🤩
Eeeeee that’s so cool! I want to do the same with my mirror now
yeahhh! Do it!
I love using the Sherrill mudsponges they don’t pull out the grog
It looks soooo good! It was also so satisfying to see the glaze dry on the tiles after you dipped them. I could watch that for hours 😅
hahaha I agree :)
Great project!
What about cookie cutters with clay? Could be interesting. A small ceramic star cookie tree. My brain needs to hush now.
for sure! Tiles are so addictive, so many possibilities!
Cool project, but I kept wondering why you made so much work of measuring with a ruler when you could have made a 2cm wide strip of wood? Easy to criticize, I know. Thanks for sharing!
haha that is a great idea. I didn't think of it!
Love it!!
Thank you!!
Na that’s a big rollin pin 😂 I really like the blue as it looks like it has a lighter rim looks really nice x

Absolutely loving your channel, love your style of delivering the tutorial, just perfect. Where are you? I'm in the UK
I'm in Germany! Thanks for the kind words :)
Love the project, don’t like the grout colour, but that’s only my taste 🙏🏼✌🏼
That is the biggest compliment anyone could give me :)
How many hours did these project actually take?
Love this!!
thank you!!!
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you didn't use trapezoid tiles?
haha that's what I was talking about in the beginning of the video. Too lazy and too much math. I would have to account for shrinkage of the clay, too!
Wait how out of order am I, weren't there birds on that wall !?!
👏👏👏
