I'm a art teacher and I always say to work with the "happy accidents". I don't know clay that well, but if it's possible, I would break the rest of the bottom of the shade. I think it looks unsuspected and quirky and fun.
I feel a strange affection for the lamp base that got squished because you put it together too fast. Blob Lamp! Short and wonky! Sometimes we are all Blob Lamp. It's really cool seeing you poke all those holes in the lampshade after marking them out with the ruler. They make such a pleasingly regular pattern! Except for that one line down the side... My favourite thing about these videos is watching you take the prompt from the show and go in your own direction with it and make what you want to make. I just love it when people express their creativity in their own way and bring their own personal vision to life. And you're absolutely right that the lamp turned out great! Cozy is exactly the right word! I think the lampshade looks neat the way it is, but if I were you I'd remake it... just because if I were you I'd be nervous about bumping into the pointy bits! That's me, though. I think the real question is whether this lampshade or a remade lampshade would make you happier to see in your home, and I can't answer that one for you.
tbh i think you should break the rest of the bottom lol not only would it look intentional but that rugged edge almost looks like ruffles or lacy bits!! love love love it
Make another but keep the first as well. Change them up according to your mood. I like the broken but changing shades is always fun. Btw the base is beautiful. Love the raw clay.
I like your lamp shade. I can understand if you want to remake it but the chipped side actually looks pretty cool. If you decide to keep the current one maybe you could chip the unbroken side a little so everything looks like modern take on a scalloped edge.
I have to thank you for pointing out the Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down, because I've been able to find episodes online, and whenever I visit my Mom, we're able to watch it together. She doesn't find a lot of shows she looks forward to, and loves Pottery Throw Down, so this was a nice treat to bring to her.
I have a few thoughts~ >I want to say how much I admire you for finishing the piece even after the heartbreak of the "misfire," and completing the video! The way I would have walked away from the whole thing and scrapped it all... I appreciate your example! Because the final piece has great character! >With the breakage, you have a kind of "live edge" situation going on and I like it! >My suggestion is to create a new lamp shade, buy a fabric or paper one, *and* keep the first one. Then you'll have choices!! 😉
I would have been done when the first globe collapsed. R you going to glaze? If so I might finish breaking the edge and then glaze. It will look intentional.
While I love the swirled look of the current lampshade, I think I would remake it. Cool design! Thanks for sharing your success and mishaps. Ceramics is a humbling art form!
I think I would work with the damage and find inspiration from it, more than likely introducing other materials. It’s a delicate thing making something that looks really cool, but by weaving a thread like jute/leather or linen string (or even a knitted net cover) using the holes here and there it would be fun to try and see where it goes... You can always just make another lampshade, but on the other hand you might turn it into something even more fabulous by honouring the damage. If you decide to make another lampshade how about turning the damage one upside down and make it into a cool hanging plant thing by attaching some rope (macrame?) through the holes. Anyway, great job, Mia. Thanks for sharing. You have a lovely lamp whatever you do.
I completely agree with you. My biggest concern would be safety. Broken pottery is beyond sharp, so just brushing past it could cause damage especially if you have kids or animals. Beautiful job. You make it look wo easy!
Definitely do another shade and show us!! You can use the broken pieces of pottery in the bottom of flower pots.. I’m sure you have tonnes of other uses for it too! You’re great to show your successes and the blobs! 😂❤❤
I've had some awful weeks at work and seeing you fail but persevere has made me feel so much better. It's so beautiful, love the colour of the clay. The broken shade gives it a lot of character. Good luck with whatever you choose to do
at 15:57 i started fearing it still looked to moist on the surface to be fired and then it exploded and i was like DAMN i knew it. i hate when this happens but under that much time pressure i would’ve absolutely done the same so it’s a good learning experience for everyone watching this i think! i love your videos so much
I love the broken, textured edge. It has so much character and really tells the story of your reclaim and hard work in making it. I also love how the light from behind emphasizes the uneven edge. As someone else has said, you could always make a new shade and then swop them over when ever you feel like it. I really enjoy watching you work and that you are not perfect. Seeing how you overcome problems in different ways is very encouraging to me. Thank you so much.
Thank you for always sharing the warts as well as your success. I would make a second lamp shade, well actually a third because that is how we grow and when you see the lamp every day, you will remember overcoming adversity, whereas seeing the broken piece will remind you that you gave up before the job was done.
yo was such a fun surprise to hear German. I can't imagine learning it as a foreign language- I can barely keep up with my German since I moved away as a kid. You sound good!
The lamp has a lovely organic shape - like a forest mushroom (or toadstool :) The cap is typically ragged in places along the edge - in my opinion it's perfect!
Chicago here (kind of close to your old hood). I love old stuff with a lot of imperfections, but unless you rough up the sphere (put some major dents in it or a hole), to give it balance, I think in this case making a new shade would be better. Plus you might sleep better by giving yourself some real closure on the project, lol. I'm kind of talking from personal experience on that. But I am soooo glad I saw this video because I'm gearing up to doing a lamp soon, so thanks or that nudge and being a great teacher!
I really want to try the two bowls attaching to each other but I feel I’m too beginner to do it. Thanks for this video. I laughed at a few parts of it. I’m your big fan now.
That was wonderful and yes you should make the shade again. Could you also make a video on lamp parts - where to find them, how to wire them up, etc. I'm currently making a lamp myself and finding it hard to source information.
lovely! I do love that you can see the different clays in the broken lamp shade part, if you do remake it or use a cloth lamp shade, maybe you can use bits of the first lamp shade to decorate the new one, or attach bits of it to the body of the lamp. as always, I really enjoy your process and these videos :D
I really like imperfect things and I love the result. I won't tell you what you should do but, if I did end up remaking this lamp, I would try to recreate that scruffy finish of the top.
Two options: chip around the entire shade so all of the bottom edge is rough and broken all around (which may break it completely) or re-throw it. I vote re-throw. Regardless it is a very cute lamp! Still enjoyed the build!
I love, that you took the challenges. I guess you learned a lot. I don't know if I would rebuild the shade or adhans the misstake (like these japanish tradition)...I like the ruff edges so I would try to shape them a bit more.
5:17 Hein sight 20/20, what if you kept the top one on the batt but supported it up? Like, the kiln shelf supports supporting the batt. I wonder if it would still droop but droop in a different way? The shade, I think I would've gone too far and made the top look like it was pillowed/ quilted. I would like to see you remake the top and maybe turn the existing one into kensugi? Or add to it? I love the layers
Can you say the brand of your overalls in the episode descriptions? I love them all and am always curious about the brand. I just discovered your channel recently and I just love it. I'm inspired to make more pottery.
I hope it doesn't come off as rude, but I love to see you fail. Not so much as satisfaction, but yes satisfaction... I can't express myself properly, my head is all sick, but: Someone as cool as you, with as cool ideas as yours and your skills, do make mistakes. You don't give up, and that's admirable
Is there a way to smooth and seal the broken shade?? That way it'll stay like that and not... Crumble?? Or cut anything/anyone.. and u would still be able to see all those amazing layers!!
the tasty colour of your reclaim clay is gorgeous, shame about the shade, but id make it again as the 'pattern' was good and they looked great before bisc. another great make. ive been watching the series on you tube as i cant get it any other way so good luck with the next challenge and the fluent german during the spring and summer x
my heart wants an unbroken shade.. but also i feel for the broken one. can the broken bottom be sanded down .. or perhaps crack the unbroken sections so its all raw at then end
I think I would glace the top in a way so it would look like you wanted it to be like that. I mean to play with the colours. Greetings from Berlin in Germany 😂😂😂
Great video! For the shade, you could remake it if you really want the designer look (maybe make it out of a different color clay for contrast?) but if your fine w/ the prehistoric look, you could (maybe?) break the rest of the edges. Also, I think it's interesting to see the transition between the broken and the unbroken sides. It's kind of like half of it went back to how it was when it was "new" and the other half stayed "old". You could also just remake the shade, and break the edges so you can switch it up whenever. Sorry For this being so long of an explanation :/
I think remaking the shade would give you 'long term" pleasure. It's a delightful lamp & deserves a delightful top. 😊
I vote for you to remake the shade! And veil Gluck!
Thank you! ❤️
Viel Glück 🙈🫶🏼 close though!
same! i'd even vote for one without holes, to put even more emphasis on the light coming out underneath ❤
@@sujammazthat could be cool

My thoughts, too.

Use the broken lampshade with the blob bottom and it can be a piece about how imperfect can still be beautiful!
@@slovakgal yes, yes! i want to see Blob Lamp!
tbh i think you should break the rest of the bottom lol not only would it look intentional but that rugged edge almost looks like ruffles or lacy bits!! love love love it
What I like the most is that you show us all the mistakes in the process as it is in real life. Beautiful lamp anyways❤

I definitely felt like giving up in that moment! Making a video held me accountable 😆

What a funky lamp. I love seeing how potters reuse their scraps.

I love that you share the failures as well as the successes. I think remaking the lampshade is the best option. ❤
I love the pink and green I thought you would put frog on tea pot lid. It is all adorable just as is. Love your work
Leave it the way it is, Plenty of character. I wan't expecting the clay to become so red, I like it
Really love the way you handle setbacks… inspiring ❤ keep it up.
Love the bottom! I'd get a fabric shade so that gorgeous bottom piece will be the standout.
I vote for remaking the shade. Is it possible to make star shaped cutouts instead of round holes? That would look great! Love your channel ❤
I think you should break it all around to make it appear as though the broken texture is a deliberate part of the design!
I like the music you're using in the beginning of this video. I find it more soothing than what I've heard on your other videos.
wow! I love it! Broken or unbroken. The clay color is so great with the light coming through. Great shape too.
You are so great. You show what happens with a fail, now we know.
I love the look. I would keep it. I can't wait to make one.
Thanks.
You can make a lint with macrame/tassels...a bit vintage vibe.
Beautyfull lamp👌💯
I think you should remake the shade. Great job. It’s beautiful!!!❤
As a woodturner who likes to make natural edge bowls I would keep the "damaged" shade, adds character to it.
I think the broken one has its charm! You should keep it 😊✨
The lamp has a lovely organic shape - like a forest mushroom (or toadstool :) The cap is typically ragged in places along the edge - in my opinion it's perfect!

I love how it turned out even with its faults, but I think I would have to remake the shade… 😊
Nice work! I think you should totally remake the lampshade.
Remake is a must. Very nice, cute and cosy lamp!
I would definitely re-make the shade... it's a beautiful lamp 😍
Love this! I like the raggedy shade. But would love to see more lamps. Stunning when the light shines through.
It looks so good, I think remaking the shade will bring you the most joy from the project. Once more , an excellent episode
I'm also a fan of rough and natural torn edge look. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us.
That was wonderful and yes you should make the shade again. Could you also make a video on lamp parts - where to find them, how to wire them up, etc. I'm currently making a lamp myself and finding it hard to source information.
I’d remake the shade & just take what you like about the break & incorporate it into the new shade
Well done to you 👏 I love the lamp and shade unglazed and the proportions are just lovely, but there’s a but 😆 you should make the shade again 😊

Yes remake exactly same look .. it’s awesome
I really like the shade - it tells a story ❤
I’m enjoying that the broken edge lets more light out. Can you deliberately break more?
Totally worth remaking, it's awesome!
So good to see you work thru all the challenges! We all learned!
I think leaving the lamp shade reminds you of the journey. Put the broken part towards the wall?
Two options: chip around the entire shade so all of the bottom edge is rough and broken all around (which may break it completely) or re-throw it. I vote re-throw. Regardless it is a very cute lamp! Still enjoyed the build!

Yess I have been meaning to try that :)

remake it so that you can see your original vision for the piece, As always very much enjoyed the journey you shared
I think you should re-do the project and I'll buy this one from you! ❤️❤️
What a beautiful and unique lamp 🙏🙂 that realy lights up your day 💥
following along with that show is a great idea.
I really hope the US does a pottery throwdown and you can be on it!!!!
remake. It is so cozy cute.
Can you say the brand of your overalls in the episode descriptions? I love them all and am always curious about the brand. I just discovered your channel recently and I just love it. I'm inspired to make more pottery.
I'd have a go at further chipping the edges. I like the effect of the chipped parts, but the section with the even edge throws it off.

right? 😍 thanks for watching!

It looks Wonderful do remake it! I think you Will not regret!
thank you! ❤️
Looks like my picture of recent eclipse.. nice chipped of rim adds character.

I love watching your process, successes and challenges, all of it is so inspiring. Keep up the amazing work and PLEASE keep making videos!!!
I want to learn from you , you are very creative and beautiful 💕💕
Remake, it is so cool!
Please keep it! It's a wabi sabi kind of thing. You could put some gold leaf along the edge.
I think a porcelain shade could be really cool if you do remake it
Sorry but that was a great laugh. Glad you stuck with it. Impressive
I think you will want to remake the shade.
Remake the shade! 💜💜💜
I vote remake I just can't with cracks like that
Remake it! It's so beautiful ❤
thank you! ❤️ I think I will :)
Reminds me of a panettone 😋
I would try and break the lampshade all the way around and see what it looks like with a chainette fringe around it
I still like your art
my heart wants an unbroken shade.. but also i feel for the broken one. can the broken bottom be sanded down .. or perhaps crack the unbroken sections so its all raw at then end
I love it! Broken and all x
I think I would glace the top in a way so it would look like you wanted it to be like that. I mean to play with the colours. Greetings from Berlin in Germany 😂😂😂
Keep it and build a new one. Are you leaving it raw or are you going to glaze it?
I cracked up within the first few minutes when you said, 'homo-genius'....thank you, I needed that laugh 💗🌸💗

its a good idea! I think I just need to sit with it for a little while to see how I feel :)
i vote you remake the shade.
I might do it :)
Remake the shade but cut stars and constellations into it this time
Why your wedging board doesn't move? Mine (I made it following your instructions) moves every time I apply pressure...
I love the meow song 🎶
Remake the top!!
Super cute video
Can you just shorten the shade? I don't know if you can do that but I think it would be pretty shortened anyways.
I reckon you should Kintsugi the lamp, gold leaf the rough edges and make a statement
