"A roof may help if you have a squirrel problem." LOL, maybe German squirrels give up faster. I remember when Mark Rober made all those obstacle courses for squirrels and they could figure out tightropes, booby traps and locked boxes. Still, this bird feeder is lovely! I hope the birds get nicely fed from it!
A idea on design so you could fully fire it: you could make the base within the cylinder convex and then add very small drainage holes along the lowest point of the outer bowl portion. This will enable proper drainage and prevent water from pooling. I'm not sure how well this would hold up in freeze/thaw cycles though.
This is so beautiful. I was hoping you were going to carve some hearts on the body of the feeder, but still so cute. This also reminded me that I need to refill my bird feeders.😊👍🏾❤️
Never have touched clay in my life, I heard Heidi Jacobs from Whitehall Pottery talk about you on a podcast and now I'm here watching you build. and learn something about managing a projekt. Best wishes from rural Germany near Belgium.
Warm greetings from Finland, the land of Moomins and Santa Claus. Your videous are really great. Thanks for those. It's midsummer here in Finland, which means that the sun doesn't set and we can wheel in the middle of the night without lights. Johanna
As a swedish speaking Finn I squealed a little bit when I saw the thumbnail for this one :D I love it, such a cute idea to do a moominhouse birb feeder
Thank you for your generosity in sharing the template for free....looking forward to trying it! I would love a template and video on making a handbuilt coffee pourover! Love your videos! 😊❤😊
I learned about the other channel a couple of months ago & I enjoy watching it even though I’m not a potter myself. Congratulations on your Smurf birdhouse 😂 I really like it, possibly my favourite piece so far
Hi Mia. Lots of good ideas in your build, but if you don't vitrif it, it will get destroyed by the frost. And the vinter is really the moment you want to feed the birds.
@potterytothepeople most birdfeeders I've seen that have a bowl at the bottom like yours, have some holes for the water to flow away. Big enough for water, but not big enough for all the seeds to fall through. Think that might be the solution for your design as well :)
I think it looks good. I also wished you had glazed it. Honestly birds it seeds so fast sometimes and if you remember to check it. Them it should not become a problem :)
I have been wanting to make a birdfeeder! I like your design. Putting the dowel all the way through is smart I don’t know if I would have thought of that!
How funny that you made this lovely bird feeder as I have just thrown some feeder’s too, which are drying. I just made a closed form and cut a hold when leather hard with a hole at the top for the wire and a small hole for the perch, hopefully it will work as well as yours 😊
This turned out wonderful! The moomin-esque look is an obvious win, but the whole thing is really nice. Really love to see you explore the construction of this thing as you went along, with the different firings, underglazing, oxides and so on. The porous main body has me a bit worried though - wouldn't that mean that any time there's a rainstorm with some amount of wind, there'll be moisture wicking through it and into the seeds inside? This would obviously require a different construction, with the cylinder and base separate, but it seems like only underfiring the base would be better so that the cylinder would be waterproof. Also, it might be an idea to add some sort of padding between the top of the cylinder and the roof, so they don't keep getting bumped together by the wind? Not that the weight of the roof won't hold it in place, but with that shape it seems rather likely to be caught and lifted slightly by strong winds, which would probably cause some wear over time.
@@PotterytothePeople Yes, it would be super interesting to have an update after it's been in use for a while! And, just to be clear, I think you did an absolutely stunning job with this 😊
Thank you for video. My mom asked for a bird House. I think she wanted wood work. I'm planning a similar ceramic feeder as i am less inspired by bird house
That’s awesome!! I think if I do this I’ll actually use the bottom as a bird bath and not do holes in the bottom.. then the whole thing can be glazed. Do you guys think it would work like that?
@@PotterytothePeople I think if you’re changing the water daily it’ll be good, especially if you’re doing it with a hose and flush out the old. Hope someone tries and tells us!
Love this! Esp the red roof. Can't believe you had to redo it! Is there no way you can salvage the original one? I'm guessing if you try and reglaze it it will crack? Not a potter myself so all new to me!
Sehr nett. Damit sich in der Schale unten keine Feuchtigkeit sammelt und auch nicht im Zylinder unten müßten da noch kleine Löcher rein. Schimmelndes Futter ist schlecht für die Piepmätze😉
Why not just poke tiny holes (smaller than the seeds) in the bottom bowl so the water can drain? One in the center in case water leaks into the roof & then a ring of them just outside of where the body connects to the bowl. Then you can glaze it & it'll be sturdier.
This is so cute! But also not a good bird feeder, unfortunately. Seeds will get damp and will stick in crevices. Ideally you want to be able to thoroughly clean and disinfect your feeders. If you can't get your hand or a brush down inside the feeding tube to clean it properly, the damp seed will start to mould. It also can spread diseases between birds if it can't be fully disinfected. I've had problems with feeders that couldn't easily be cleaned. I think its cute for photos and decoration, but it's just not practical for a clean bird feeder.
Beautiful. Thinking that you could make another ‘body’ and bowl bit so you can use the first roof (which didn’t look like poo) and maybe sell one. I would love a less primary-coloured one...
anyone else here who isn't a potter and has never done it before, but just loves to watch pottery?
Me haha

haha I've seen those Mark Rober videos! Sadly we don't have any squirrels in our village. Too many cats 🥲
It was so cute at the end seeing the birds using it. Awesome :)
I was soo excited when they first came :) They love it!
From the thumbnail, I knew it was inspired by the Moomin house. I'm glad you redid the roof. Wonderful project !💖
Yes! Good eye :)

I saw the moomin house in the thumbnail so hard and im so happy it was intentionally Inspired :)
For supporting the cone, I was thinking you could cut out an identical pac-man shape out of cardboard and tape it together to make a conical support.
well that is GENIUS!
This seems so simple yet I couldn't think of it 😅
6:20 Oooohhhhh Thaaaat’s why my 3D printed stamps didn’t work back in college and why wood stamps work. Glad to know if I ever do ceramics again
That is so adorable! And I think you captured the moomin essence perfectly
Thank you so much!
Adding the clear over the red iron oxide is what burned it out. I’m glad you refried. It’s adorable.
Thank you! 😊

That's adorable, it turned out beautiful! And I'm so happy the birds love it! And thank you so much for the template ♥♥
You are so welcome!
This is so lovely!!! Good call on redoing the roof, I didn't even think it was that bad before but the red really made it pop even more
i loved the black(ish) top!! goes to show you, to each their own!
true :) It's hard to pivot when you have a ✨vision✨
The birds give it a thumbs up!❤
I love this - it turned out so cute!
Patience and persistence= Great job 👍
This bird feeder looks so adorable! Especially I like how birds are using it)
thank you! ❤️
To support the roof you could do a cone in thick paper
genius!
Aww it's so cute! I love getting to see the birds using it at the end!
Me too! ❤️

I wanted to comment right from the start that it reminds me of the Mumin's house! So nice that you indeed were inspired by them
such great news I got the Moomin vibe across :)
@@PotterytothePeople as a half finn, I grew up with them, so getting it from just the thumbnail proves you deffo got it spot on

For drainage, would a hole cut into the bowl with a screen affixed be an option? That would solve the liquid problem at least.
Omg!!! I immediately thought of a moomin house when I saw the thumbnail :D hehee made my finnish heart very happy :>
Such a wonderful Moomin-Birdhouse!!! I love it - like the birds, too ;-) Great project
Thank you so much!
Dear Mia, could you please make a Slab building template for some eggholders? That would be so great! Love your ceramics and your style! ❤️🙂

'if its big i dont have to refill it very often' my birds must be different because they would eat that in two days easy
haha oh wow! So far it's been up a week and still stocked, but it's just small birds eating out of it.
