- Tech neck, also known as cervical kyphosis, can result from having a hunchback slouch or pitched forward head. This posture is often observed in individuals when they’re looking down at their electronic devices. Not only does this put a lot of strain on your neck and shoulders but it can also lead to both upper back pain and even pain and tingling in the arms and hands. This video demonstrates what Tech Neck is and also provides some key exercises that can be used to maintain a healthy cervical spine.

My PT has me do all these exercises. Thank you for the visual to know how they work on the spine & benefits!
Dr. Su,a
As a researcher and full professor of pain epidemiology and treatment at a major university medical school and School of Public Health on the West Coast, I applaud the quality and content of your videos. We have strong programs in neuro and ortho spine and PM and R. I will recommend your videos to many. This is excellent content. Great job!
You are a legend mate! We dont have anyone like you in Australia unfortunately.
Thanks to you and the Physiotherapist.
Excellent channel Dr. Su. Clear and concise explanations of spine pathologies and nonsurgical/surgical methodologies.
Thank You :-) You built my hope. Really goood job.
Quality content as always in your videos. Thank you Dr.
If only I could have known this year's ago! Thank you always explaining things in a way that really hits home. When you look around these days everyone you see is looking down at their phones.... you are sure to be super busy in the upcoming years!
Everyone should see this. I'm sharing with everyone I know. Thank you!!!! 👍👏🙌
Thank you.
Thank you both. The education is so valuable. I have cervical spine issues and am under the care of a conservative spine surgeon. A pillow and PT has been so beneficial.
Definitely important for all ages. I did them in therapy 😀
Excellent information , thanks for your efforts.
My pleasure
Great exercises. Thank you. English teacher here: in each segment where you introduce the exercise, it is misspelled “excercise “.
Thanks for letting us know.
Awesome
This is an excellent video! So helpful and informative. I do 3 out of the 5 exercises here to strengthen and maintain my cervical spine. I am indebted to my PT who showed me how to do these exercises and I have incorporated them into my workout routine. I will definitely incorporate the other 3 exercises to do as well. Thank you so much! And keep those excellent videos coming!
Is it ok to feel some tingling down the arms during the chin tuck? I guess it tells me it's effective for my cervical radiculopathy due to posture kyphosis?
I had peripheral neuropathy. But 3.5 months of physical therapy 2x week helped me be nearly pain free. I see soooo many young people looking down at their silly phone with bad neck posture it's heart breaking.
THANK YOU DR. SU I can relate to your Video I do that exercise Door therapy 100% you got the relief just be consistent in exercising because if you discontinue doing the exercise it will comeback easily. Im a Cervical Spondylosis and now Thoracic Spondylosis patient for almost 15 years . The KEY i think really is EXERCISE for us to avoid Surgery. Very Informative Video. Incredibly useful and something that could help nearly everyone. They should teach them in high school.
I worry about nerve damage in my cervical. Same thing.
Dr. Su: Thanks for the great videos. I’m curious about an alternative treatment I read about-- do you have any thoughts or comments on the Cellgel treatent or Dr Puaza’s Discseel for spondylolisthesis?
Thank you very MUCH DOC. It really HELPS A LOT my DOCTOR IN THE 🇵🇭is the SAME of your RECOMMENDATION OF EXERCISE TO DO. My Doctor said Honestly Arthritis is in THERE ON OUR SYSTEM ITS JUST HOW YOU MANAGE THE PAIN when the SYMPTOMS IS OCCURRING❤WE CANNOT AVOID DEGENERATIVE DISEASE ITS NATURAL FOR IS TO GET OLDER AND DEGENERATE OUR BODY PARTS.❤
Hello Dr Su
Thank you for all your excellent videos, I've learned a lot. Since you seem to have only cervical and lumbar spine content, may I suggest a video about thoracic compression fractures and instability?
Yes we can do that
@@DrBrianSuTheSpineGuy I have a deteriorating disk C-6 or 7 and have had two cortisone shots, one didn't work and the one a month ago put me in agony. I have a surgeon who is chomping at the bit to replace the disk and another who says it will get better with time and he won't do surgery. I've been in severe pain since Feb because of the nerve being pinched and my left arm is very weak. I'm terrified of surgery but don't know what to do.
Do these exercises in the vid and also do cervical traction. Thank me later. @@debra2700
Thanks for this therapy information Dr. Su. So many people can certainly benefit from it. Question: I have cervical central canal stenosis. Two things I'm curious about. When is the time to think about doing something about it? What symptoms are worrisome in other words? Secondly, is there a good, successful alternative to a laminectomy for increasing that canal space so fluid can better flow in your opinion? I've read about "minimally invasive" procedures that utilize a tool that vibrates a very high frequency. Is this a safe procedure with high efficacy?
Please watch the video on Central cervical stenosis
@@DrBrianSuTheSpineGuy I have watched several of your videos. They are very well done. I will watch the one about cervical stenosis again. My myelopathy in terms of strength and agility didn't indicate surgery. I have other symptoms like feeling congested in my head/ears closed feeling. A pressure sensation. I had a brain MRI related to hearing loss and all was clear. So I'm wondering if the occlusion of the canal can cause this feeling in the head.
Hi Dr. I had my eperderal in L3last week for pain and i cannot hardly walk after walking 3 minites I have to sit down because the weakness and pain in my low back and legs it didn't help at all Dr. What you recommend for me next igo to vanderbilit medical center a orthopedic surgeon i live in Kentucky I have severe degenerative disk disease in L3thru S1 do you think I will be able to walk normal again that's my main concern what do you suggest will help me do you think surgery is the answer I need awswers I been watching your chanel for 3mo. Iam in a lot of constant bad pain from pinched nerves in have had surgery inL4. From herniated disc i have fussion and rods in L47 years ago the pain is worse now and cannot hardly walk i hope you can give me some advice I cannot get any advice out of my doctors and nopain relief either Dr. what do you recommend i do?
Hi Dr do you have any physical therapy exercise for a pinched nerve in the neck? Thanks
Yes watch the videos on cervical radiculopathy
Do you have video regarding side impact automobile accident recovery?
Watch the video on cervical facet joint syndrome
Thank you doctor. Is the pinched nerve always visible on MRI in patients with kyphosis due to bad posture? I had a clear MRI but still feeling the nerve pain running down the arms ?
Yes it's possible
If i knew it would be like this I would have never done this to myself 😢😢I can barely move anymore 🤷🏿♀️I was moving better before this surgery 😭😭😭😭
Can I ask what surgery did you have? I have a deteriorating disk in my neck C-6 and am in constant pain. I've tried cortisone shots which did nothing but make it worse and take pain medication which I hate. I'm terrified of the idea of neck surgery but the doctor is making it sound like no big deal. Would love your advice on this.
how many disc replacements have you performed in the neck?
Hundreds
Thank you. Now incorporating these into my daily routine. 🫶
Thanks dr! You're very informative! I've been suffering for several yrs and I've exhausted conservative treatment. I have mild stenosis at c4 & c5 , ddd, tech neck, occipital neuralgia, nerve pain down left arm... i recently had injections to treat that and no relief. Surgery or no?
Please call California orthopedics and spine for a virtual appointment

PLS HELP ME! 😢 I’m 34 and got an MRI came out that I have minimal spondylotic with anular bulging and slight uncovertebral hypertrophy at the mid low cervical spine C3-C7
I don’t have a lot of pain but do have a lot of stiffness in my neck, I feel like the need of popping it.
In my case is not the pain my pain is tolerable but I get numbness from my head to feet in one side of my body, depending where I feel more pressure on my neck.. something is the right side sometimes is the left side.
Most of the time left side I get numb and thingling sensation all over my left side. The feeling is horrible and sometimes it feel like is hard to breathe or heavy on my chest.
I’m waiting for my referral to a neurologist or a spine doctor, but in the mean time what do I do with this numbness is horrible and it feels in half of my head too even in the back of my eye kind of blurry or just confuse.
Pls anyone that is reading me help me. I been taking antiflamatory NSAID..

I just recently have a laminectomy and discectomy surgery on my Lumbar Spine (L5-S1) a month ago, unfortunately I was diagnosed as well with Cervical Facet Syndrome and Shoulder Scapular Instability.
My question is does the exercise no. 3, Open Book stretch is safe ?

Hello Dr Stu.
How wide should the door frame be (for exercise#01) so that the shoulder tissues aren't stretched too much?
A standard door frame is acceptable
I already have mild cervical
Kyphosis at 66 yo. I hope these exercises will help prevent further degeneration. I’ll do these consistently

Hello doctor . I have a reverse neck curve starting from c3 to c6 plus opll and Canal stenosis . Can i do these exercises to restore some lordosis my muscles are tight .
Yes
@@DrBrianSuTheSpineGuy thank you doc . For replying .
What about book-reading neck, knitting neck, assembly work neck, etc? I'm guessing this isn't specific to cell phone users. Isn't there a lot of controversy about tech neck in PT and pain research?
Yes try to do those activities with breaks in between
Hello doctor. I had a reversed cervical lordosis and 3 protruding discs . I performed the neck towel exercise for 4 months and i restored my neck lordosis but i still have the protruding discs. Will the body absorb the bulging disc parts?
No they will not but it is likely not symptomatic
@@DrBrianSuTheSpineGuy Thanks for responding.
Hey Doc, I have a question to ask you so I’m almost 90 days postop from my L5 S1 artificial disc replacement and I had a CT scan done last week because I was having a pretty good amount of pain in my back but the radiologist said everything looks good on and what causes me to have pain and it become like ongoing is when I have sex so basically every time i Try to have sex. It causes me pain not in the moment but after I like have a lot of just discomfort, you know, so my question is I guess would you recommend me to not have sex until maybe around five months six months let me know if you can please thank you. I’m a 28 year old male btw
I usually have my patients wait 12 weeks. You should ask your spine surgeon.
My life is pretty much over 😢I should have never agreed to the surgery 😢I might as well be dead
I’ve had the fusion now Dr. Su. I wore a hard collar and a Bone Stimulator. My surgeon did not use A cadaver bone , but Titanium rings. He fused 5, 6 and 7. He went through the front of my neck. The fusion took, after months! Now he wants to go through the back of my neck for another surgery. He showed me my MRI which shows an area narrowing on the spinal cord. He wants to go in and open that area up and let the blood flow better through that area. It’s not a bone spur pressing against the spinal sac.
The fusion did not help the numbness in my hands and forearms at all. The fusion was because #6 had collapsed. He said he fused 67 also, to strengthen 6.
He says the surgery through the back is more intense and severe pain for about 6 weeks.
He also said some problems could happen, like infection or he might do something wrong, and he would be cutting through muscle and have internal stitches that will dissolve. He also said any surgery on the back or neck will have pain all my life.
I asked him had he ever heard of you.
Should I have that surgeryDr. Su?
He said he doubted I’d get the feeling back in my hands and forearms, but, he could guarantee it wouldn’t spread.
What should I do? Have the surgery? Or not?
If I don’t, will I end up in a wheelchair?
Sometimes it is the case where you need more of the spine decompressed or the bones do not fuse in the front. That can happen. I'm happy to provide a second opinion. You can call 415-925-8200
How can I send you some X-rays?
i have 4 herniated disc in neck from an accident in Greece and i have atrofia in the right side also i have a 37 per percentage 100 disability in greece what do you advise me to avoid surgery and be well again
