Absolute legend and hands down one of the greatest smiles ever. I cannot hear Dels voice without seeing his smile and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
This song means so much to me. I love this song so much. My wife surprised me with this song after we said our "I do's" and we exited to this song. I was sooo surprised.. I get goose bumps every time I hear it.
I'm from england, and love the original version by richard thomson, but i have to admit this superb cover by del and the boys made my skin tingle, what a class act!
go on Soundcloud and listen to Mary Beth Bowman's version of it this all needs to be a duet male female duet and not the gross version Richard Thoms did was some girl like yawning in the background
William Liese ~ That's CLUELESS. The song "needs" to be whatever the creator and original artist of this song decides it needs to be. OR didn't you know that person was Richard Thompson? His was not a "version" of the song. His "version" was the song as it was ORIGINALLY written and intended.
Weirdly, there's a gazillion covers of this song by US artists, and I've not yet found one cover by a British artist, even though it's an English song about an English motorbike in England. Also check out Sean Rowe's superb version on UA-cam. There are so many good versions, but Sean Rowe's is my current favourite. Love this one too. Love that violin.
Saw the band perform the same song last Saturday in Dallas. What a treasure indeed. I am so very glad Del McCoury is still with us. He is gracious, humble and incredibly talented. Just a good ole’ country lad.
These musicians, in my humble opinion, are the best bluegrass ensemble that we have presently. The perfect combination of rebel spirit and bluegrass - this is as fine as it gets!
Hearing this song..I will never forget being with my dear old Dad and seeing Del McCoury play this song, and the many times we were together here in Ol Kentucky.....I love you, and miss you Dad, see you across the River ..We'll rest under the shade of a hickory tree together again..❤
Saw them in them spring of 2024 still sound as good in 2024, what a treasure. You can't hide in bluegrass it is you and the microphone. So much talent in this group!
I had the pleasure of watching Del and his great band play this in a concert he gave in a small Pasadena, Ca. church. After the concert I bought a CD and met him personally. He is a very nice man.
Classic Dell; I'm a Rock n' roll, prog guy, ELO, Yes, Pink Floyd, Zep, James Gang, etc, But love me some good bluegrass!! This and Blackjack County Chains are my Dell favorites.
Yes, have followed Richard Thompson for years, the best of Brit singer/songwriting guitarists. He owns the song with emotion but have to say it suits the bluegrass treatment that Del gives it, fronting great musicians.
Peter D I think Thompson owns it literally. I love bluegrass, born and raised in the region, love Del but I still have enough sense to know Thompson’s is the best and most authentic version.
Richard Thompson sure got a chunk of change from these boys. And they made a big hit out of it as well. It's a great story about a fine motor bike (" a girl would feel special on any such like"). Knoxville is the right place to go on a '52 Vincent, I might add. Just an awesome song, fellows. My hat's off to you.
vincents were wicked, 125 mph right out of the box way back in the late 40s and early 50s. i met dell in blue hill maine and i told him his music went to my soul, well he shuffled and move his feet and his wife said thanks, just a good down to earth man, i love him , humble as can be, what a wondreful preson
Woooowwwww! One of my favorite songs, sung by one of my favorite bands. Had no idea they covered this Richard Thompson gem. That last verse is worth the price of admission, "Angels on Ariels, leather and chrome." Speaking of the price of admission, Del was in a generous mood tonight--he gave them four verses for the price of three;-)
This is real Bluegrass Music. I remember Del from when he was with Ralph Stanley and Earl Scruggs as “ Masters Of Blue Grass”. It’s small wonder why Del is so popular.!
Saw Del and band last night in Grand Rapids . WOO what a show . He played so many great songs , many of them requested by the audience . Del is 85 now and still sings like a bird . His sons play banjo and mandolin and his grandson was backing on the guitar . Those Nashville Cats sure can play and sing
I would have loved to have seen Richard Thompson's reaction upon hearing this. He's as deep a scholar of American traditional as he is of Celtic traditional styles and I'd imagine that Del covering him must have put a smile on his face.
I just listened to a podcast that interviews songwriters (songcraft) and he was featured and he did mention this version of the song. That is what brought me to this video. He also did mention the change of lyrics/towns. Not in a negative way.
Superb performance from all concerned. Box Hill is a woodland beauty spot in rural Surrey, about twenty miles south-west of London and has long been a gathering place of bikers. I'm sure the story might just as easily have happened in Knoxville!
Box Hill was part of the cycle-racing route for the 2012 London Olympics, and you might find some footage from that. There have been times when I have thought other aspects of the song are a bit too American, but it works, either placename.
So honored to been a part of this concert! I'm on the front row with my friend Cindy! (At 53 seconds, you'll see a the back of my head the short blonde haired girl next to the red-head with glasses who is sitting next to our friend Mary with the white long, lens camera). Thank you Todd Mayo for your friendship & your genius with the other Todd for coming up with this incredible concept of concerts in the cave! The acoustic sound is just amazing, the temperature always perfect, and the music - well, how can you describe anything better than Bluegrass UNDERGROUND!? Much love & friendship always! LOVE YOU Del McCoury! God Bless ya'll!
Great version, applause well deserved. I did wonder how he was going to manage that 'Box Hill' line - did it well. South of London, there's a long chalk escarpment, of which Box Hill is one of the highest points. If you wanted to get out of the smoke and grime for a while, it made a pretty nice day out, a few hours in the country and still back home in good time. A popular run for bikers, especially if you started early for breakfast at the Ace of Spades café.
Yep, Del sings "Knoxville" instead of "Box Hill" - that's a VERY different place, and not a town in England, as Del says - Box Hill is just that - a hill, in Surrey, U.K -but it's the home of the famous biker's cafe, "Rykas". And Del.... it's "Beezers" (as in B.S.A motorcycles) NOT "Breezers"!!!!
I heard this years ago, never forgot it. What a blessing to actually see and hear Del McCoury and his fantastic musicians perform it again, and be able to click on UA-cam any old time I feel like hearing it again!
I love his tone in this song, it just grabs me from inside out, just pure good feeling, Del McCoury is unique and great! Makes my soul happy and the moments are wonderful.
What a great rendition; the fiddle and the banjo take this from a really good song to an excellent recording. I listen to this song over and over. Good job DEL.
Absolute legend and hands down one of the greatest smiles ever. I cannot hear Dels voice without seeing his smile and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
He's one of the most cheerful guys on the planet in my opinion.
Not many get that. You are very correct.
there's just something about BLUEGRASS Music 🎶 especially from Dels voice you can almost feel it run through your veins ❤
great song. I got the fortunate experience to see these guys live in Steelville, Missouri of all places. They were so good!
They took a great song and knocked it out of the park. Bluegrass is all about talent and music and here it is 110%
Del McCoury is an American treasure
singing an English song by an English man.
Del Yeah!!!

I don't think Mary Beth Bowman would approve of you calling the original composer's version of this "gross"

Jarred Stancil sorry in the name of Marybeth Bowman, I apologize
I think it's very cool that Del and his boys decided to cover this. Del just owns it.
Yes he does!
It's a great version of this classic ballad, no doubt. I'd love to know how Del came across this song. His band is one of the best ever.
11 dislikes must be Goldwing Riders.Del is hittin the note here!

10 years later and I watched these boys rip this song just as good as then, 84 YO and sharp as a tack.
Saw the band perform the same song last Saturday in Dallas. What a treasure indeed. I am so very glad Del McCoury is still with us. He is gracious, humble and incredibly talented. Just a good ole’ country lad.
Yes! Saw him at n Chicago a few weeks ago and at 84 YO was fantastic!
These musicians, in my humble opinion, are the best bluegrass ensemble that we have presently. The perfect combination of rebel spirit and bluegrass - this is as fine as it gets!
Just shy of sacred, is this ballad. Thank you Del and crew!
I absolutely marvel at how -in a few short minutes, Richard Thompson and Del and band can weave a tale that makes us feel for a misguided guy.
I'm a huge Richard Thompson fan - and this song is one of my favs - but Del McCoury puts his heart into it, and how can you not like that? I like it!
Can't help but love Del's voice. In my opinion his band is one of the best
Amen!

it doesn't get any better, this is the greatest Bluegrass song ever. No one can do it like Del.
And its not even "Bluegrass", its "English Folk". See Richard Thompson. But you're right, no one can do it like Del...
@@terrywatts674 i'm aware of the original-Del made it Bluegrass

Never gets old. Gets better.... that's real music
Del McCoury: what a classy guy. What a great singer and what a great band.
Greatest music ever traditional bluegrass live on forever ron brennan rdzl om616
Absolutely!!! A great bluegrass/country performer and a class, class, class gentleman! A super representative for his genre.
2 of his sons playing with him...how great is that.

It gets no better than this. As David Grisman said Del McCoury is an American treasure !!!

I love contemporary bluegrass man del mccoury and his sons what a great way to have your son's as aband that's the greatest reward a man could have

Box Hill! In the north Surrey hill country, England. Also made famous by our biker band Dumpy's Rusty Nuts
Box Hill, a favourite biker destination with a famous cafe where they all met :)
+Martin n Carol Piper the cafe is Rikers on the A24, still a meet place.
I can't stop listening to this. Perfect bluegrass.
My God Almighty! This is good music!
Dells just such a gentlemen you have to love him. Always dressed to the nines. His high harmonies are top 3 in my book.
Del and the boys are a national treasure.
Im a 40s something guy thats covered in tattoos and listens to hardcore punk music....I love the Del McCoury band!
Go look up Sean Rowe's version. So much better
Del and Robbie hit this out of the park
I am 67 and i'm new to the bluegrass scene I am a rock n roller but damn this is great stuff. Incredble musicans. FROSTY
To late in life did I discover Del McCoury. Missed out on a bunch of good music.
I had the pleasure of watching Del and his great band play this in a concert he gave in a small Pasadena, Ca. church. After the concert I bought a CD and met him personally. He is a very nice man.
The nicest man in bluegrass!
Red hair and black leather -- still my favorite color scheme! Don't have a 52 Vincent, but love the wind in my hair!
Classic Dell; I'm a Rock n' roll, prog guy, ELO, Yes, Pink Floyd, Zep, James Gang, etc, But love me some good bluegrass!! This and Blackjack County Chains are my Dell favorites.
That was supposed to be ELP, but just listening to ELO, so you know how it is.

My wife and I were there too.. Nice venue also.
Del McCoury is my favorite bluegrass Sanger of all time. His voice is world class. Love his hair do too.
A great song. performed by a very talented group of musicians in a wonderful venue.
Great tribute to Richard Thompson's classic ballad. A little bit on the rough side but a heartfelt and genuine performance by Del and the band.
Great interpretation of a great song...
Best voice in the bluegrass game. Del is a national treasure, that's for sure.
very tight band
Also a very fine guitar player.
Wow!! That, my friend, is good music.
What a spot to have a concert.
Running on all cylinders, banking the turns all the way. Thanks for posting!
