He did retired for a few years. When Paul Anks heard he was going to stop performing and he had promised Frank a song. Paul went home and wrote this song for him in 1 night. That's the story that Paul tells about this song.
Couple years later he came back to performing for several more years after his return. He passed away in 1998.
Great point about Sinatra being able to reproduce his studio sound in a live setting.
I think this is such a great song for him to showcase that wonderful voice and his ability to give meaning to a lyric. He was a special talent no doubt.

Frank Sinatra's version sounds like it was sang in 1974; Elvis' version sounds like it was done yesterday...The song fits Elvis (Paul Anka-Wrote the song later agreed) in his final concert in 1977 it was the last song he sang; sadly, 6 weeks later the KING was dead!
Every singer sound like in their time (50s, 60s, 70s, etc.); Elvis songs 60 years ago still sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday...Elvis changed with the times; no other singers could!
He did every recording live with his band. That’s how every artist was back in the day. You truly had to have talent to make it. Nowadays you just need the look and they make you a star. It’s really sad that the younger generation gets fooled so much.

Classic song from Frank but it has to be Elvis for me because he sang it with more passion where as Frank it's more talking apart from the end stay safe 😷✌

Now artists record and do not sing live no so much at least. In past, you sing live and not recorded ( it was expensive) also it was expensive to buy vinyl records ( yes vinyl there ware no CD or DVD then)
A classic Frank song nice very nice. But Elvis was king of this song. Elvis had the voice. I think Dean Martin and Bing Cosby had better voices than Frank.
