Using the subtitles establishes that she is In fact using sign language as she does again later at the dinner table. She is deaf or mute and V is blind in one eye.
She is only mute. There is a big clue that she can hear in the beginning of the video. She wasn't signing. That wasn't ASL, American Sign Language. Just gestures.

So glad you reacted to this one! I believe that IU is supposed to be mute or deaf/mute and V is blind in one eye. I've heard theories about this mv being about marginalized people (like those with handicaps); which would make the cube a box they are supposed to fit into. Since they don't, the cube (society) destroys them.
V AMAZING acting out all these emotions of fear happiness sorrow furious, in a 5 minute music video is crazy because we see actors failing to act out a single emotion in an 1 hour long episode but here he is, the versatility is showing 😭They they forgot what they were running from because through the lens of the camera, they were able to just love and enjoy life until the reality caught up to them and they were taken away ICRY 😭😢🎉
The cube 'Nemo' represents the discrimination towards marginalized people (symbolized in IU being mute and Taehyung being blind in one eye).
They stayed together till the end with their love sustained, free from all oppression and pressure from society.

IU can't hear and V’s one eye can't see ,in the end IU covered the good eyes of Taehyung so he won't see the horrible ending in front of them ,im Stuck at how a single tear from Taehyung’s good eye traced its path down his face and IU’s hand gently covered his eyes, It's as if he found a momentary refuge in her touch, offering a subtle relief from the overwhelming sensation ... Most Amazing 5 minutes 22 seconds MV I’ve ever seen, I went through every emotions from “Dearest” to the last “Love”. On IU-TV she has 2 extra videos pertaining to this MV. “Behind the Scene” and music recording. Taehyung did a fantastic job acting, we already know IU is a wonderful actress. Their Chemistry makes me want and anticipate a possible drama with them both. The Director is Award Winning and recently for the K-Movie “Concrete Utopia”.

Such a beautiful and emotional video featuring amazing acting and vocals that makes the experience so personal. I really do hope that Tae & IU do other projects together both film and music as they have great chemistry and when he was on her show their voices also blended so well. Also at the end it was pointed out by someone that he can hear what is coming but she can't, while she can see what is coming but she covers his good eye so he can't. Both cry at the same moment though and from the same left eye. Also the right side of his face seems to have burn scars so maybe he had encountered a cube before but got away at the last minute. This cube was relentless in its pursuit and even seemed to change size so it could come into the building. Earlier when it was flying overhead you could tell no way it could fit inside those hallways. I also noticed the cube waits for them to stop fighting and accept their fate. If you notice there are no other people so obviously no person is able to meet the criteria this cube holds that would allow someone to survive. The camcorder that kept showing a better reality, was giving us the viewer a happier version of the events. They both rise in the air together, their bodies still solid, while the reality is that they have been turned to ash. At the top of the camcorder right before it turns off you see ash particles in the air. I also loved how the clothes landed together on the pile. Again all of this symbolizing that even though they seemingly lost to the cube, it couldn't destroy their love for each other. They stayed together in life and death, so indeed their love did win. I can't get enough of this MV, the acting is Oscar level and combined with the award worthy vocals and lyrics it's both heartbreaking but also heartwarming that at least they went together.

Hi Guys, I haven't seen you since, "One Piece." Good to see you again. To me, this is I.U.'s finest work. Her voice is so sweet, so innocent, so perfect. She's always incredible but to me, this is the absolute the best and a great way to introduce her to the world. Both I.U. & V are actors appearing in K-drama's. V, the man in the video, is Kim Taehyung, one of the members of BTS, The Biggest Group in the world. They are also incredible. He was in a K-drama that you would like called, "Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth". It's about 3 Kingdoms but focus' on the Knights from Silla. Happy to see you both again. A lot of theories say that the cube represents the oppression of society or the hatred or prejudice towards those who are diff. In this case, they are both disabled, and far from the perfection society demands. How they see each other through the lens is the illusion of looking and being normal, beautiful and even able. But as they find comfort in this illusion, the cube (society) inevitably finds them and despite fighting back or attempting to run from it, they realize that they cannot beat a system which is much stronger than them. But as they die in this representation of a dystopic society, the one thing that they had was their deep love, which supercedes oppression, injustice, and hatred....even in death. Love wins all.

Thanks for your thoughtful reaction. Yes, IU is mute, ie., the lip ring which denotes speech impairment and V is blind in his right eye. If possible, your reaction to “Behind the scenes” of the making of this MV is so beautifully done. There are 2 versions, 1) IU TV explanation which is more technical and 2) V’s input by Bangtan TV which is much lighter. IU has 2 UA-cam channels, 1) IU’s Pallet where she MC’s and interviews actors, singers, producers, etc and researches in depth those she has on her show. To date, she has had 3 BTS members on the show: JHope, Suga & V where they do duets together. The second is IU TV, where you can watch her concerts, tours & behind the scenes of her MV’s.
IU produced the MV and her director is quite famous. He recently won the Director award for “Concrete Utopia”. The MV was filmed a week before V entered into mandatory military service. All 7 BTS members are now serving and expect to regroup in June 2025.
The filming was shot at an abandoned seaside resort in Korea. The winter weather along with the breeze from the sea had temperatures dropping very low & very fast. IU came down with the flu but carried through. She has been in the business as a singer, actor and producer. She is a strong supporter for rising singers & actors. If I’m not mistaken, IU debuted in 2008 at the age of 15. She is very loved by the Korean people and is considered South Korea’s “little sister”.

That's why when they look through the camera it's perfect , and they can't escape their fate no matter how imperfect they are because the world is all about social media ? What you may know is that she had a terrible cold. What you may not know is that she was spitting out b blood while recording the song. The producer kept telling her they should do this another day, but she just kept going. That last breath in the song was basically the end because I don't think she could go on.

As a second comment, would love to introduce you to an amazing Chinese singer. He is the most popular singer in China right now. His name is Zhou (pronounced like Joe) Shen or his English name Charlie. He is an astounding singer. He is often mentioned with Dimash although I don’t recommend comparing as they are different singers. Zhou Shen is a contra tenor with the most unusual and ethereal tone. He has a 3 octave range, can do amazing tone changes and voices with his vocals, speaks and sings in several languages (not sure how many but have counted up to nine). He is prolific, hardworking and extremely funny. He has several viral songs like Dalabengba, Ring the Doorbell, Da Yu/ Big Fish. He just did 5 performances on NYE and sang 14 songs. His Night at Ulaanbaatar and his new song Floating Lights are amazing. He is also on a show that reimagines Chinese pop songs with new and older singers. Charlie’s stages are amazing check out his duet to the song Listen which is sung in Mongolian style. It’s gorgeous. Or the theatrical song Inflammable and Explosive where he uses multiple vocal styles including Chinese opera. You do not need to understand Chinese to enjoy his talent. People often liken his singing to enjoying the sounds of nature. One final masterpiece is his duet with Sa Ding ding on the song Upwards to the Moon, a OST from the Chinese drama Ashes of Love. Astounding. Hope to take a chance and listen.

I'm just copy pasting an explaination I saw under another video:
The Cube represents society, it is chasing every individual who doesn't fit the standards of society. Here V is half blind, IU is deaf and mute. So they are running from oppression of society. The world is controled by these standards of perfection to the point that people in the world put masks on when they don't have make-up or when they feel inssecure or they wear hats when their hair is messy. The MV is a dystopian view of our society. While they are trying to hide in this abondonned place filled with the clothes of people who died because of this oppression, they find a camera that allows them to have an illusion of what their lives could be if they were "normal" by society's standards, it starts with their looks, they could see how they would have looked like, then what they would eat, then they start to feel the illusion a bit too much to the point they beautifully imagine that IU could sing and V could sing as well and she could listen to his voice, they could marry each other and just have fun and eat whatever they want because they wouldn't have to care about society or any other kind of oppression. However, as soon as they feel a little bit of confort and try to live their life, the Cube (society) finds them again and push them to retreat and flee again, but the Cube managed to find them again, they try to survive against it and try to fight it as hard as they can, but they cannot beat a stronger system, they just give up but at least they stayed together until the end. Even if they died at the end, they loved each other deeply, it shows that even if society is oppressive, people can love each other and they can find their soulmate even if they are not "normal or perfect" to the eyes of some many others. The pile of clothes is like from Spring Day, these people died because of injustice, but they deserved love, so the pile of clothes can look very gloomy and sad, but as in Spring Day MV if you don't forget them you can seem them happy and free where they are right now...

The cubes are trolls/ media. In the MV, she is deaf/mute, he is partially blind - it may seem there is no fathomable way these two can understand each other. This video is dedicated to artists, great Korean idols. The cube represents the Korean music and film industry, where every artist is under threat of social pressure, where one wrong move can ruin their careers, where they can be intimidated by the media and end their lives, living under stress and constant fear. Through the lens of a video camera, artists, idols of many, are beautiful and happy, but in real life they are very vulnerable. The Industry sucks all the juice out of them and then throws them away as if they were old and unnecessary clothes. In South Korea, the big music lobbies have a way of treating artists that is scary. If they see that they are good and successful, they take everything and more out of each of them, becoming ruthless. But when they have been exploited to the point of exhaustion, they leave them aside like broken toys. More than one artist has ended up committing suicide. Everything is very sad. At its end the trolls/ media come to consume another artist and fandom and discard it like a pile of clothes and IU is ready to fight but V (the fans) steps in front of her to defend her and their bond, but they are met with a bitter end. A sad reality every artist must face someday. She sheilds V's good eye to protect him from the inevitable. .😭😭😭😭
