She needed to record in this condition because she didn’t want to postpone the date of the song and the album anymore….IU never disappoint, she is a great singer songwriter composer producer with her own authentic colors.

The producer Lee Jong Hoon actually composed her debut song(and many of her newer hits), so they've been working together since she was a teenager. They're very close friends. He's one of the biggest influences in IU's life, both as an artist and as a human being.

Based on LWA MV Behind, she already postponed it 3 times because she was sick and she didn't want to postponed it again. She filmed the MV with V early December I think and at this time she was also filming her new drama, her schedule is too full and they need the track recorded ASAP for the editing of the MV. She works too hard 🥺

John - you've got it exactly. This is what #IU is like, everything she does is meticulous - she overthinks everything. She starts with her lyrics, and her singing and her collaboration with a composer or arranger is all designed to present her ideas. The MV likewise. She never does anything with her voice just to show off. And when she sings this live it will be the same, because she knows in her mind exactly why each little sound is the way it is. (BTW - it is the same skill which makes her acting so good - she goes over and over every little detail of what her character is thinking and saying.)

Yes, IU has always put the missing children reports at the end of her videos for years now. I also learned a lot from this session. One of them being... do the music recording first before shooting the music video outside in the cold. ;)

IU live blows me away. Her 2019 Love Poem Concert videos are dazzling. The 2 released from The Golden Hour (Eight and My Sea) are also fabulous. She is a once in a generation, world-wide talent. Singer-songwriter, producer AND actress. Just wow! On top of that she is a kind, generous and genuine person. Not to mention devastatingly beautiful. Wow. Just Wow.
IU has lots of live clips on her channel. She always sounds great, and the musicians she works with are crazy good. She's also been a producer on her albums for a while. I have so many favorite songs (and probably more favorites I haven't heard from her earlier albums yet) but for the last year, Above the Time, Knees, Ending Sequence, My Sea, dlwlrma, Lilac, Blueming, Friday, Winter Sleep, and Next Stop are some that I play a lot. There are also classics like Through the Night, Palette, Love Poem, and Good Day that are required listening!
I’m glad you got to IU little more and got to see how wonderful human being she is! Time magazine voted IU one of the most charitable public figure in her age group in the world! IU is one of the most humble person despite how popular and rich she is and she always helps those unknown musicians to keep work on their dreams and provide them the spaces and the environments to practice, etc at no charge! John, three things. First: I could watch you react to vocal recording sessions every day for the rest of my life. Knowing you know what you're talking about and the kindness you bring to your explanations (for those of us who were never pro musicians) makes me so happy. The pressure on the vocal artist to hit not only the note but the feeling and the phrasing, makes me wonder how anything gets recorded at all. Thank you for sharing the technique and artistry of an artist without getting too deep into the weeds. I love it! More please.
Second, In her bts of the recording of the MV she says she caught the flu during the mv recording days. I wouldn't be able to stand up if that was me, much less act in the vid (she's the primary producer listed for the mv) having to make unending creative choices during the filming. Then to turn around and go into the studio. There's that line where she turns to V and says I"m going to go into the studio to record this soon. They were using a guide track. I don't know how she did it. I do hope somebody checked on her later!
You most likely know this already but the composer of this song is her drummer. I had no idea he had this breadth of emotional expression in his work. I'll have to dive deeper and see what else he's written for her. (The IU's Palette episode with V is THE BEST. He and the drummer really connect.)
"My Sea" breaks me every time I hear it. The live versions of her songs are what confirm she's a cut above others. Watch her lives.

You need to watch her Behind the scenes of the making of Love Wins All, and you'll get a better understanding of why she was sick while recording this song. Her & V were working in freezing temperatures & she actually caught the flu while making the video. It's really detailed & informative, I hope you do get to react to it.

You have asked the impossible, to list just a few of favorite performances of IU.
I feel like I do need to give you a little background. IU uses her MV's to add depth and meaning to her songs, that go beyond the lyric's and can span multiple songs over a number of years. Not knowing this someone will listen to a song and think that good, it was an upbeat song. Then they read the lyrics and find out that maybe it isn't that upbeat. Then they watch the MV but not knowing the back story, it still a great MV, but then they watch an explanation video or soneone gives the the explanation and now their half way through a box of tissues.

EIGHT (2020) MV feat. Suga. Her 2nd most complex MV and her saddest MV. About her struggle in dealing with the suicide deaths of 3 close friends (Junghyun of Shinee 2017, Sulli of Fx 2019, Goo Hara 2019) all arecrepresentedvin the MV. Sulli being the 2d animated girl in white, Junghyun being his alter ego a dragon and Goo being her favorite pet a lizard. Sulli with the help of Junghyun hear IU's pain and set about to correct that unintended consequence of their action. Her 2022 Golden Hour performance is a must see, but only after watching and understanding the video.

Seeing her struggling from the cough/cold, but then next second she sang better than anyone else, how?!
I can see many artists would be calling it off for the recording, delay the release day as long as they wish to fully recover till they feel like it to pick up the recording, MV filming.
Yet all we see is her pushed through, don't wanna delay anyone's schedule. She is a star yet she consider delaying as creating inconvenience to everyone. Highest work ethic!
I would love BTS show us something like this too. We knew they put hours of effort to put out the perfect songs with perfect choreo. We see a little of their dance practice, makings but rarely the studio recording. but thinking about it... even like 10mins for each member, that's more than an hour recording behind the scene footage! And they NON-STOPPED producing new songs and already tons of other contents! Guess that's why it's hard for them to put out things like this
Most will rightly recommend her popular songs but you should react to IU live singing of By the Stream with just her vocal, piano (Jung Jaeil) and cello. She said that is one of her best vocal performances.

I recommend checking out her eight live perf from her golden hour concert which was the opening track from her most recent concert. I'm sure you've heard she's about to embark on her world tour together with the release of her new mini album so it'll give you a nice little taste of her concerts
The best takes sometimes are when you struggle because of cold or laryngitis. I have recorded like this and it always turned out to be the best recording. I'm sure you have too. I remember Jin at the Busan concert saying that he was sick and had a bad throat but when he performed his voice shined. It is profeessionally learned technique for sure nothing beats endurance and mind over matter, even hand gestures for the eye to see can help reach those high notes. I love it, the out takes make you appreciate the song presentation more. When she performs it live it will be so much more valuable to the listener that knows the back half.
John, if I tell you this is Excellent, will you watch it too? This is IU Interviewing V on her show "Palette". V had just dropped his solo album. When you watch you will see their chemistry together. It is a perfect video to watch, which is so appropriate after watching them work together on the video. And you can see why she thought of casting V because she had been with him recently. They each sing a song. She sings one of his songs from his album which her musical director ad libbed and added on. It's stunning exquisite. V sings. Then they sings a duet. Notable. V keeps complimenting her Live Band. One of the guys in her band wrote "Love Wins All". We find this out on V's version of Behind the Scenes. Be sure and watch that too. You get more info. It's good. Last note. From reading the director's interview...IU is NOT deaf. She is only mute. There is a big clue early on in the video. Guess who figured that out? Roscoe. Yes Roscoe. Enjoy IU's "Palette". I love her live “Red Queen” concert clip. She did one from her Palette tour and also her Love Poem tour. Her voice sounds very sexy, the genre style is lovely, and she also wrote the song, as well. To me, she is a true musician and artist, who’s extremely well versed in music theory. Can’t beat a young female musician, lyricist, composer, producer and all around Boss Queen.

So many amazing IU songs and performances. The one I’d suggest as breathtakingly beautiful is Lullaby at sketchbook, during Covid (no audience other than film crew). It is a very difficult song for her (lyrics are sad) - so I don’t think she has ever performed at a concert.
She has a team of musicians(and others) that has followed her, from company to company, for a many years.

During the last concert tour...The documentary revealed that IU had recently been diagnosed with Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.
And had been recieving treatment for over a year.
According to Hopkins Medicine, the disorder causes one to hear themselves too loudly, creating discomfort.
"It is a disorder of the valve of the Eustachian tube that causes it to remain open. When the valve remains open, sound can travel from the nasal-sinus cavity to the ears, allowing you to hear your own voice or your own breathing too loudly, or even the sound of blood pumping."
