Better yet, stay away. It's not your property, you have no business there, and the few people who live there are armed and don't want you there. Idiots who like to hunt from their trucks or just wander are not often under surveillance, so that in case anything happens, fire, looting, vandalism, poaching, you will be sought by the police. .

What’s crazy is they were separated. So one wasn’t looking out for the other. If you’re focused on looking down, the other person should be focused looking at the wildlife. They would’ve heard a bear come up on them, but a cat is stealth. He probably didn’t see it until it was on him.

I lived in Sacramento, and read a story about a mountain
lion running around the vicinity where I lived. There was
a pet cemetery that it ran through, and I used to park my
car there when the apartment complex worked on the
parking surfaces. I would not doubt that the mountain lion
would not hesitate to put a few pets into the ground had it
wanted to. Strange that I looked it up, because I live across
the country now, and of course it would not make my local
      news.

These tragedies are hard to reconcile if at all so will let others speak to that. To others who say this was lion territory, I suppose that's true but was shocked to hear of this and know I lived on Reservoir Road within walking distance of Georgetown in the early 1980s. And even then I considered it fairly settled; rural but lots of homes and must be many more now. Still in the Sierra foothills. ...
I now live on a remote Montana farm and on the day this broke, I had just returned from checking a suspected lion den less than a thousand yards from the farm complex. "Remote" is not an exaggeration. I flank Custer National Forest with prime habitat; only other humans are on a cattle op 3 miles away. This place has been in lion territory since 1883. Livestock losses but no human injuries but you have to carry a sidearm even if mowing grass due to the rattlers ... or anything else that can appear. (Except the bears; don't shoot at them unless you want to die.)
I don't expect a couple kids to carry weapons but the older one could have. At the very least, carry a long staff and BEAR SPRAY which works ... very well ... on anything with lungs. Don't rely on tiny jogger mace. Manifesto ends.

All these keyboard commandos "I'd a had muh gun. I'd a be safe" First off you would have to pull your gun out of your holster. Then you would have to aim your gun at a vital spot on the animal. Then you would have to pull the trigger. Then you would have to hope for a fatal wound. Cats are incredibly fast and sneaky. He/she would be ripping your throat out before you even had you gun halfway out you holster. So sad. Praying for the family...
The worth and dignity of a soul is measured by what it delights in! And delight/happiness is our highest desire.
Men have killed to have it. Kings have gone mad trying to find it. Wars have served it. Affairs have worshiped it. We all seek it.
Sadly, billions have died without discovering its secret... namely, that joy is not an it, but a He.
The Gospel is the good news that sinners can delight in a Holy God. It's the good news that all of our deepest desires are satisfied in the ONE who sent His Son to bring us to Him. .
God is so valuable and so satisfying that the most loving thing he could do for us is to make Himself gloriously indispensable. He is the only being in the universe for whom self-exaltation is the highest virtue.
Therefore, God's commitment to be glorified and our goal to be satisfied are not at odds but come to simultaneous consummation in the worship of His Son... who took upon Himself the Wrath that God had towards us in our sinful disregard of Him. A wrath that could never be appeased through man-made religion.
Jesus didn't die to turn the world into a paradise, he died so that we could stop seeking paradise in the world...
Temporal things such as beauty, popularity, money, sex, racial identity, gender reassignment... can never truly satisfy. BECAUSE WE WERE MADE FOR SO MUCH MORE!
We were made to gaze intently into the Eternal Beauty of a majestic King, Father, and God... meet Jesus the Christ.
Life is hard, God is good, Glory is coming
😊... Thanks for taking the time to read this comment.
May God bless you with all things necessary for life and goodness.
    God Bless!
