I think growing up in the 70s 80s and 90s was the best time to grow up. I feel everything after 2000 just changed. People do shopping online. People have their groceries delivered to their homes. Its like people dont get together and hangout like they used to

I agree with you. When the internet became embedded in most households after the 2000. It really changed the landscape of day to day life. Have a good day my friend.

I feel like we skipped to an alternate timeline in or around Y2K. I actually feel like it was a bit later, maybe as late as 2006. People changed. Not everyone tho.

So sad seeing malls like this now. You know back in the day it was probably the place to be. I miss the excitement that malls use to have. I love seeing the old pictures when malls would be full of shoppers. Usually people were dressed nice. It was an event to go shopping at a mall. I've been to quite a few malls that have so many empty stores. Thanks for sharing.

@@Mike-fd5zq Absolutely! Think of all the jobs lost. Also the increase in buying online and the decrease of using cash. The tax dollars lost for the community too. Just like the local businesses when they close is sad to me.

Hey! So, my Dad was originally from Reidsville, moved to the DC area after the Navy, met my Mom, got married, had myself & 4 younger siblings. After the 3rd youngest sibling was born, we moved from VA, back to Reidsville, where I lived until I graduated from Reidsville Sr High in 1978. Now to the mall. The backside is where Winn-Dixie used to be. That Chinese restaurant used to be a dry cleaners at one time & I think it was a bank before that. The end of the mall closest to the restaurant was Penney's, with an entrance at that end. Next to it was The Peanut Shack. I can't remember what was across from it other than Catos. Then, of course, the ever-hanging-on Roses. I've since been to a Roses north of Ocean City, MD & one in Cumberland, MD, all looking in about the same condition, though back in the 70's, the Reidsville store was a pretty nice store. There or extremely close to the Lemons Jewelry Store, was The Jewel box, a very nice jewelry store. There where Hibbett's was, was Eckerd's Drug Store. Inside of it, there was the drugstore area to the right & to the left, was a very nice sit down restaurant where you could eat lunch while you waited for your prescription. Across & to the left, just before you go down the steps or ramp, the store with the shingle type of roofing, was the AWESOME...Hodge Podge! It was a very nice, yet "hip" type of store. You could buy place settings, housewares like pictures, lamps, simple costume type jewelry, greeting cards & great smelling candles & incense. Smelled SO good in there. You could buy nice stuffed animals, small floral arrangements & I remember buying these haha fuzzy/furry shaped feet that you could peel the paper off the back & stick them on your notebooks or inside your school locker. It was such an eclectic choice of items in there, this & that, which fit it's name perfectly, a hodge podge of items but displayed very nicely, with taste. Across from Belks was/is? Strader's shoe store. I saw an old 1947 video on Reidsville & uptown, there was an Eckerd's & a Strader's shoe store, so it's been around for a long time. When I moved from Reidsville, you could still access Belks from the inside. Last yr, I had to stop in to Belks to make a Belks credit card payment for my Mom, who's 87 & she told me about having to use the end entrance...blew my mind! I talked with the cashier around my age & I told her that this was my first time being in there since I left in '78 & she said it has changed SO much in the 45 yrs & definitely not to the good. By the way, my paternal grandfather, who has been gone for quite awhile, worked on building the Pentagon & he retired from the American Tobacco Company in Reidsville. Back in 1947, it was I believe, the #1 tobacco business in the world? with a value of $6 MILLION! That's alot of money nowadays but for sure it was back then. It put Reidsville on the map & it was a very thriving city! Anyway, I forget who bought them out but when I was in elementary school, one of our field trips was to tour the American Tobacco Comp to see how cigarettes were made! Do you think that would happen these days?! I think not! There's a place in Reidsville that I wish I had been able to tour before it was sold off & that was the Chinqua Penn Plantation. You can google about it instead of me going on & on about it, but at one time, it was given into the trusteeship of the University of North Carolina System. When I visit, my sisters & I hike around the outskirts of the property. I REALLY enjoy your vlogs & maybe some time, you can travel around to all the NC lighthouses & go up in the ones that still allow it though you'll probably need to have a part 2, 3 or even a 4 parter! THANKS!!!

The “kiosk” was The Peanut Shack. Snacks, drinks, candies, cookies, and the best item… ICEE’s! Past that was JC Penny. Across from the Peanut Shack was CATO and CATO PLUS, women’s clothing. Hibbet Sports came later. Before that it was an Eckerd Pharmacy that had a small food counter. I remember eating grilled cheese sandwiches there.

I was truly impressed by how long Signal Hill stayed on life support. We all knew it was coming, but it was still really sad when I stopped by to see it was finally closed.
The fact that the JR building now has the red x of death on it surprised me too. Hard to believe it's in that bad of shape now.
I'm going to check out this mall soon. I was also lucky enough to get to go in the eden mall right before they closed it for good. It was the same as far as temperature. It was so hot inside because the I'm sure the AC was off.

I like Reidsville, but yes....a lot of the businesses closed after the tabacco industry left. It is getting better and there is a lot of new development, but there are still a lot of shuttered businesses in town. NC is currently turing route 29 into Interstate 785 and its expected to bring a lot more industry and jobs to Reidsville. Myself and a lot of other people living near Reidsville wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
