Hey Scott, what you were talking about around 1:10:00 regarding your voice and the impact it has on you really resonated with me. For the last 2 and a half years I've been struggling with long covid and the impact of brain damage on my life, which dramatically cuts into my energy budget. Every little choice, from doing groceries, having conversations, doing the dishes, cleaning up, all of that is something which is weighed against the energy budget I have for the day, for the week even. I find it really hard to communicate to those who don't experience these things the same way I do just the sheer impact it has on my life. I hope you know you're not alone in these situations, and good going for all the steps you've taken in bettering your ability to deal with it. Have been loving your videos for a few years now, much love
I'm sorry to hear about the brain damage and long covid, that sounds really rough. It's nice to find someone else that understands the idea of having to budget a resource that most people never even need to think about. I hoping that things improve for both of us!
I'm so glad the tip I shared about the skippable trainers in Winona's gym has been helpful. Love that I can help my favorite UA-camr optimize these runs just a bit more!
As a fellow introvert/INTJ with a profession requiring nonstop vocal communication, I can somewhat relate to your struggles with your voice. By the time my workday ends, I am mentally and emotionally drained from the sheer daily volume of vocal output. My vocal cords consistently feel frayed, for lack of a better word. I feel like I also recall you mentioning being prescribed amphetamines. I’m not sure if you stopped taking those or not, but they seem to exacerbate the symptoms for me. I genuinely hope your voice-related struggles improve! Cheers for all the much beloved content!
23:13 “% of your DVs lost” especially in HP, is not a good way to think about the stat decrease from choosing Hidden Power in Gen 2. DVs make up only a small portion of your actual stats, even for Pokémon with very low base stats and very little stat XP. It’s an even smaller portion for HP specifically, which has a bonus growth of 1 per level on top of base stats, DVs, and stat XP. The difference between 0 and 15 in a DV is .3 points per level. Even at a low base 50 HP, at level 10, 0 DVs yields 30 HP plus some for stat XP, whereas 15 DVs yields 33 HP plus some for stat XP. It’s around, or less than, 10%. This roughly holds at higher levels. (At level 50, at the vitamin limit for stat XP, it’s 130 vs 145, for a Pokémon with a low base 50 HP, like a first stage ‘mon.) TL;DR: You should definitely stop caring as much about how Hidden Power affects your DVs in Crystal. (Unless you have good reason to believe that up to 10% more HP and 5% more ATK and/or DEF (at most) would solve more hard fights than the right type coverage on Hidden Power.)
The thing is, in the end game vs red that swing in HP can be a big issue, requiring several levels to survive some likely scenarios. I think he's done a pretty good job balancing the cost and benefit on stream and will continue to get better. You can also see the utilization of Brave natures in gen 3 as a similar thing. Extra bulk but especially speed typically only matters when a specific threshold is crossed, you either survive the attacks or you don't. With HP though there are so many factors that the lower it gets the more resets you'll end up with on average due to bad luck or narrow win conditions. 15-30 HP can be the difference between surviving a high roll or dying to a low roll.
@@UnknownVir That's exactly right. That 3hp doesn't sound like a lot, but it can be the difference in a key damage range down the line. At level 60, that's now 18 HP which could be the difference between surviving every damage range of an ability instead of only half of the damage ranges.
I’m 20, so technically part of the gen 5 era. I started with Emerald when I was 9 though. I basically soloed the game with the Sceptile line. By the time I was able to beat the elite for I think it was about level 74. The rest of my team was only in the mid forties. Really enjoy the Emerald videos. Can’t wait for you to improve with it even more.
Let’s go my lovable Dark Blade. Man I love Absols design but you get it so late in a normal play through I almost never used it. Glad to see it doing so well.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I can't remember which games allow it, but I remember some runners talking about it since the amount of dialogue you have to mash through over hundreds of runs just gets brutal
Glad to see you taking advantage of Teleport more. This gen, with it’s nested loops of backtracking, is basically designed for clever teleport routing. I know you often don’t have access to the move, but when you do, there’s a LOT of walking you can avoid, beyond just obvious shortcuts.
Absol is one of the best pokemon. aside from Eevee of course.. also i totally get the mental budgeting thing too. i dont experience it as drastically as you but im consciously aware of the concept and its very real..
Wow, that comment about not watching ya 'cuz you sound like a different person is so... hurtful and disjointed from reality. Seriously, I think anyone who ever worked at a hotline can relate. "Yeah, I sound robotic and monotonne, it's not because I don't want to help, it's becasue I was yammering non stop for the last 7 hours"
I have an overlay question: would it be practical to modify the move tutor portion of the overlay to omit the Battle Frontier exclusive tutors? You never use them anyway (for good reason), so I feel like including them not only bloats space (this is a bit of a weaker argument because the moves have plenty of space, but if it isn't relevant, I don't think it needs to be included), but also potentially raises instinctive questions of "why aren't you using x move?" That's just me anyway, and if it's more trouble than it's worth to omit them, then it's not worth it.
2:31:10 Exactly! There’s a whole formula it plugs in the name too, it’s really interesting. You would think being able to name your rival would change their nature but nope, Terry.
I use a combo of Bulbapedia, pokemonDB, and smogon depending on what specific info I need. I now avoid Bulbapedia unless I can't get it elsewhere. Oh, and serebii, used to use psypoke too
Your comments about Platinum Mapper file, is that work still ongoing somewhere? After doing my own Emerald overlay for casual play through was hoping to do one for Platinum but um ye, memory address issues on mapper load :)
Thanks for sharing about your troubles. It can't be easy being vulnerable in front of an audience of thousands, as you're always in the spotlight as a presenter. I haven't been through the voice troubles you have, but I can relate from a perspective that you have some experience with your RSI. I got RSIs, carpal tunnel syndrome, in both wrists. Your word budget was like my restrictions I had. I worked in a factory, and by the time I got home I wasn't able to do a lot of what I wanted to. I couldn't pursue most of my hobbies, like video games, home improvement, playing music,, or even really hold my phone up at times. I enjoy alcohol for its flavor but had to cut out alcohol and sugar or I would have extra inflammation the next day. I was unable to give my wife physical affection and often basic chores were difficult like dishes or cleaning, and anything I did do despite discomfort and numbness and dropping things worked against my ability to do my job or other parts of life the next day. Luckily my injury had a surgical intervention, so I am better now, aside from a little bit of weakness and lost dexterity. Please continue to take care of yourself. I really hope that you can continue on a general upward trend, even with the recent stressful setbacks.
I haven't seen you do it in a video yet, but there is a way to skip the two trainers in flanery's team. Instead of walking between them, you can use the tile above them to get passed. Love that content!
I’m okay with the new colors but the order of them throws me off. On the enemy team’s Pokémon, Speed is the last stat listed but on Scott’s team it is at the top😵💫
Absol horn works as a scythe? I wonder this because pokedex entries don't mention this but if you see the anime mainly cutting attacks are done with the horn like Razor Wind + he learns a lot of attacks that would be boosted by Sharpness like Night Slash, Psycho Cut, Slash, X Scissor, etc. Also when it Mega Evolves it changes to a halbert form.
Monitoring audio has been really inconsistent for us. There have been several projects that it’s been apart of and it always falls short. It’ll be best long term to just add a software function to the game to increment a counter so that it’s precise.
Idk man, I think you sound more naturalistic in live streams more like yourself. Both are great though. I feel your pain to some extent, my voice gets really rough sometimes because of my allergies and I live in a city with the third most trees per capita in the world. Some days I end up sounding like Batman by the evening.

Tried doing absol in fire red and ran into a lot of problems mainly from Bruno of all trainers. feels kinda weird that Absol is a mono Dark type, considering it looks like it should be like, Dark/Normal, though that may very well just be a me thing, Absol is honestly in my top 3 Dark types though, not because of stats or moves, but because it looks very snuggly
No look at it’s entry in the pokedex and it’s design and you can clearly see it was designed to be a pure dark type. It predicts didasters, it’s based off a japanese cryptid and in the anime it’s a brat lol
2:32:35 idk I seek all types of content on YT, but I think your dad is right that people want authenticity, but that doesn't exclude videos that's highly produced / scripted
