  • The Optical Spot is one of the lighting tools I use most often to create my unique style of photography, so if you’ve ever wondered “how’d she do that?”… this is likely the answer! I use the Optical Spot to create tight slices of light on the face or crisp shapes onto the background.
    I’m excited to announce that I’ve partnered with Westcott to create my very own Optical Spot to give you the lighting control and precision that I’ve fallen in love with! (PS: It’s available in MANY lighting mounts, so YES, it's for you too!).
    I often use the light modifiers for extremely dramatic and low-key results, but in this video, I show you how you can utilize this tool for soft, feminine, and pastel lighting that is to die for! In other words, it’s not only for one particular ‘look’ but instead a versatile tool that’s all about control.
    Let’s take a look at this setup, where I actually use TWO Optical Spots.
    PS: Check out this measurement, the bts photos, and much more for this setup + 25 other looks at: lindsayadler.photo/opticalguide
    Light 1: Main Light: Optical Spot + Kit Lens
    The main light is the Optical Spot and I used the leaves to create a slice of light on the face. With just this light the shot is very dramatic and low-key (not the look I am going for this time!).
    Light 2: Fill Light: XL Umbrella with Diffusion + Pink Gel
    When I add an XL Umbrella with diffusion and a pink gel to the front right-hand side of the frame, this fills in the shadows with beautiful pastel pink. The light gives the white background a beautiful wash of color and a kiss of pink on the subject’s face.
    Light 3: Background Light: Optical Spot + Maple Leaves Gobo
    The final light in this scene adds the appearance of dappled light as if the sunlight were coming through leaves on trees. I used the Optical Spot and a wider lens (EF24-70mm 2.8) to create a beautiful defocused texture across the background. I used the “Maples Leaves” gobo (in the environmental gobo kit available now).
    To add one more layer of interest to this image I used the Lensbaby Omni and the stretch glass to create beautiful painterly streaks of light onto some of the shots, making it even more dreamy and ethereal.
    The results of the lighting are unique, precise, and dreamy! Just what I was going for. If you’d like to see this setup with all of the measurements, behind-the-scenes images, power of light, and more plus 24 other recipes, check out my Optical Spotlighting recipe guide, released TODAY! lindsayadler.photo/opticalguide

    After comparing this to other similar items I am gonna say the quality of this is probably much better than the ones on Amazon and eBay. I don't think Lindsay would put her name on something that wasn't up to par. I'm definitely adding this to my list of things to purchase when possible.

    Other similar projection type lights, from what I've seen so far, have just a single lens attached (85mm, for example); this can be good. However, after seeing that one can ALSO add their own ef lens to the from for a wider spread or more narrow beam is crazy stuff!! Love the versatility!

    Lindsay, no one is better than you are at explaining your process clearly and engagingly. And you would have been a great photographer for directors Stanley Donen (Funny Face) and Michael Powell (The Red Shoes); your style reminds me of their brilliant use of light and color.

    Curious as I have the Godox equivelent with the fixed 85mm on it (Believe is apeture is around 2.4 again fixed) - however I find even with a 600watt it barely registers the light at my typical studio settings ISO100, F8 and 1/200, I am aware the optical snoots chew up a ton of light so what settings were you using to have it appear so bright in your images please?

    I am currently using a strobe pro optical snoot but the light loss through a 50mm 1.8 lens is a major issue. I am forced to shoot at iso 800 with an aperture on the lens of my camera around f4. While my profoto d2 500 watts is at full power. How does this product stack up regarding light loss?
    Thanks

    Any advantage to this one over the strobepro and pixapro versions? Seems to be a clone of those. Interested to see how Westcott may have improved the design. But just being a US reseller isn’t bad either as the others are UK and CA based. More options for folks the better.

    • @lindsayadlerphoto
      @lindsayadlerphoto 3 роки тому +1

      The lens is sharper/better quality, built in leaves, and you can swap in any mounts you want-- Profoto, Bowens, bron, elinchrome. I shoot both Profoto and Bowens mount things, so its great because I can switch between them. Plus, the lens is sharp/bright and the kit comes with custom gels/gobos.

    what i'm confused about (and can't find an answer) is: are the snoots used with a strobe in photography or a continuous light? I saw so many videos that filmmakers post, but that's not what I needed. So basic question is: does the light flash through the lens?

    • @charliegreen1989
      @charliegreen1989 Рік тому

      Yes it’s used with a strobe and flashes. Lindsay is using the modelling light to see where to position it.

    There are oils on the blades in a lens. Does this heat up the lens where it'll overheat and screw up the lens at all?

    • @longliveclassicmusic
      @longliveclassicmusic 3 роки тому

      With an optical snoot, the lens is pretty far away from the flash head…

    • @bp-blackshark
      @bp-blackshark 3 роки тому

      This lens doesn´t have an iris. And between that lens and the frosted glass is enough space. There are only 3 points/screws, which will connect the front part with the lensmount with the back part (the big tube with the holes). So the lens will not overheat. But, i would recommend a flash unit with an led modelling light, because that Optical Spot is smaller than older generation Optical Spots (my Bowens Spot is much bigger), so an E27 modelling light could probably overheat your flash unit, if you use a strong modelling lamp, like a 250W E27 modelling lamp. This Optical Spot is identical with the Jinbei Optical Spot DP-Ø6, which have a bowens mount.

    I have seen other examples from another manufacture and this one better made. This would be great for jewelry on a model too. Something to consider if you want to take yourself to next level.

    This Westcott article is exactly the same as the Jinbei DP-06 which cost nearly 1/3 the price of the Westcott. The Jinbei only comes without a bag..
