  • You can get creative with lighting using props from the dollar store! In this video, I’ll show you how I use a combination of hard light, cheap props, and shadows for striking results.
When I make a trip to the local dollar store, I am frequently looking for items I can use to cast unusual patterns on my subject. I look for things like strainers, vases, baskets, translucent platters, you name it! The idea is that the object must allow some light to pass through it in order to potentially cast an intriguing shadow.
The next part of the equation is hard light! For this, you can either use natural light (direct sunlight) or artificial light (studio strobe, speed light, or flashlight). The key is that the light is small and far away from the subject, creating the hardest shadow edges possible. For this video, I use a single strobe (a Profoto D2 with zoom reflector) far away from my subject for very crisp shadows and hard light.
The final ingredient is to bring your prop close to the subject. The closer it is to the subject, the more defined the shadow edges will be!
It's all about experimenting with simple inexpensive tools that are reimagined in a creative way!

Very cool ideas. I noticed, too, that when the colander was moved further away, you did lose the hard shadows, but it reminded me of the shadows you get with rain on a window. Lots of options to try out. Thanks.

One time at the dollar store I picked up a car windshield solar shield which serves as a great silver reflector. Some cardboard or foam core to give it a stiff backing is perfect for making a big silvery bounce card.

Thanks a lot Lindsay :-) for showing us the creative use of simple things most of us already have in the kitchen, you are great inspiration :-). I sometimes also use small mirrors to make a special effects together with a polarising filter, to control the reflective effect in the picture.

Thanks for the tips to make this technique work better. Saving myself a trip to the Dollar Store, I found my kitchen cabinets are a great source of similar props. Wife even helped me with suggestions. 😁 Thank you-you're adding more and more fun into Phuntography! You can quote me on that. 😊 ⭐x5

Here is one trick I use. Shoot through bubble wrap, the one with the one inch air cells. Add a colored jell and instant colored textured background. I get tons of this bubble wrap when I order my used camera gear and the shipping department at the store is insane about stuffing the box with this stuff.

You need to use a smaller light source to get a crisp edge. A studio light is too large. I use a 5mm LED light and I don't need to place the gobo near the face
