Question about your intro jingle. It sounds so very familiar, but I can’t place it. Is it a riff on a BGM from an older game, or is it an original composition (which means I must be losing my mind😅)? Just curious. I like it either way.

Paladin's Quest was one of my favorite games on Super Nintendo, what I wouldnt give to bring it back. I really appreciate your video today. My favorite part of Paladin's Quest was the incredible experience of adventure and travel, as well as the many recruitable characters that were not static, or forced upon the player, allowing you to choose the remaining two party members based on preference or party makeup. Also, Spirit spell was an incredible design "ooooohhhh, aaahhhhh, eeeeeehh, uuuuuh BAM !"

Interesting to hear you loved it so much. Genuine question was it because you hadn't played many RPGs yet and it was one of your first? I played it after I had played basically every other released RPG (outside of Japan) and was entertained but kind of let down. But people hate on Final fantasy Mystic Quest and I love it haha.

@@bobjoemac1 Loved Mystic Quest, and yeah... I believe Paladin's Quest was one of my earilier RPG's I was getting into, but I had played Final Fantasy 1, and Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 on NES prior. So it wasnt my first rodeo, but maybe close to it on SNES vs NES.

These are basically Moebius games, with some pinch of old 70s progerock vibes. Despite its shortcomings, it is kinda shame this kind of alien style is not used more in scifi games.

    • @Xygor

The setting is what did it for me, the 80's pulp manga / weird obscure VHS art style is in full effect here. The species in this game fall perfectly in the uncanny valley of almost-but-not-quite human.
Also, RIP Hidenori Shibao. Even if your games didn't make money, they touched our imaginations.

The graphical style is not dissimilar to Earthbound, allowing for the obvious difference that Earthbound uses its graphics to depict a lot of real world locations, while Paladin's Quest uses its graphics to depict an alien world.

I've recently got into this game around this year. I were browsing Gamefaqs games sorted by release date, looking for games to play. And i found this beauty. It had gorgeous box art in both Japan and USA, and once i saw screenshots... it reminded me of Earthbound, visually. And as i researched further, i realize it's more like Phantasy Star under Earthbound lens. Once i heard about "HP for Spells" system, i got intrigued. And once i started, i felt the unique atmosphere, different from most games. I'm currently around Misuto in the game, and i just love the visuals and the whole world and lore around it. I'm perfectly okay with Silent Protagonist, or in this case "Silent Party". The story revolves more around people you meet in towns, and it's still interesting enough to me. So it's very enjoyable to me, Dragon Quest-like ^^
It inspires me to create unique visuals and world aesthetic for the RPG i plan to make.

Paladin's Quest never gets the love. I love it. Well, maybe just really like. The story was good, although often not there until it gets dropped in your lap. The lack of MP I actually liked, in that only one item was needed for replenishment as opposed to two. Many ways to get health back without medicine, but medicine was super cheap.
My favorite part of the game was actually what Xygor did not like. The menu display's position during the battle sequences. Once the spells are learned and placed properly, mowing down the enemies became a quick enough cinch and the experience points and magic power piled on. Actually, the best part of that was when all the enemies have been killed but one that is clinging on to life. Instead of a spell or sword attack, I would press down on the Dpad and squish him to death like a bug. The sound effect combined with the flash of a black boot print on the enemy was pretty funny, and I employed it a lot.
It's a psychedelic game that rivals the mushroom kingdom, though very different. I think for what it is it was released a bit too late, and that hurt its chances. Paladin's Quest looked like a top notch NES game, or a super early release for SNES, but it came out in 1993. Lennus 2 could have been a top ten game for 1994, but by 1996, Playstation. As the video said, though, "Dares to be different." Kudos on that front, which is why I loved Paladin's Quest, even though Chezni was not exactly a Paladin

This was my first ever console RPG. I remember being in a department store and they had this and some other game I’d never heard of called Final Fantasy II so I went with Paladin’s Quest because the pictures on the back of the box looked more colourful 😅. I think the colour palette nearly seared my retinas off the first time I played the game, but I found the designs charming and I’d never played an RPG before so I just took the mechanics and quirks in stride. It also introduced me to the need to grind! I remember getting to Kaymat and somehow not ever having to grind the entire game - I wiped so fast.
My next RPG would be Final Fantasy III (VI) later on, so I’m glad I played paladins quest first because I don’t think I would have put up with its battle system if I’d played something better beforehand. Having said that, I am planning on playing both Lennus games back to back soon.
Love the video, fantastic work as always!

I suppose it didn't do enough to separate itself from comparisons like Final Fantasy in a captivatingly appealing way. I think of the mindset that game devs shouldn't try to make their games very similar or the same as other games at least if they're trying to get them to sell more, but rather should try to make them so as to incline the players to think what's different ultimately. The makers of Lemmings had this mindset I recall for example.

It's a real shame that we never got Lennus 3. The first two games spend a lot of time building up Raiga, and the power of the people who lived there. Would have been awesome to see this entire new planet after all that buildup, especially as someone who grew up really liking the first game. One of the great what if's.

I personally give this series a recommend, especially the sequel. Everything that set Lennus/Paladin’s Quest apart from other RPGs is what made it so endearing to me. The healing items were never much of an issue since you could get armor later on that let you heal for free in combat, and you usually had enough healing bottles to make it through a dungeon. Healing felt a lot like what Dark Souls would later do with Estus Flasks, and what’s more, every bottle you didn’t equip remained in your inventory and could be used out of combat, so managing HP was a lot easier late game. I liked the idea of casting from HP, but I will admit the need to cast spells to power up your magic was a little obnoxious. Still, I was a huge fan of the early radial menu and the vivid, organic designs. It really stood out from the standard dragons and elves of most RPGs, leaning more into the sci-fi/fantasy vibes of its alien setting.

I loved how original and unique the visuals were back in the day. I playedFinal Fantasy II/IV and figured an RPG with Paladins would be fun. Needless to say it was to confusing so I never did finish it until a few years ago when I went back to it with a walkthrough. Not the best game on the system, but one I really like.

I'm currently playing it, at the part where you reach open sea, close to the end I think, it's not even close to being as difficult or irritating as people unanimously seem to believe in the internet, same sensation I had with rule of rose. I actually really enjoyed the mechanics, all of them, the level design and balance were the lackluster parts, you have enemy formations that will always wreck your party no matter how leveled you are and pushover bosses. I do mean all of them until now let's see the rest.

    • @breno855
      @breno855 Рік тому

Just finished it and honestly I'd give it a 7 to 8, don't know what the critics were smoking but if you don't avoid magic - you know, the main feature of the game - and experiment to find what you like and level up the elements then it's reasonably smooth and laughably easy in parts - the bosses never felt like bosses in fact while the robots in the ganid tower in the end are a nightmare, I kept running or spamming bury that seemed to damage all types of enemies except flyers.
