Do sand FLEAS taste good??

  • Well do they? There are two types of sand fleas/sand crabs you can catch in the surf zone. Soft shell and hard shell. I love soft shell crab rolls at the sushi place, so I thought why wouldn't soft shell sand crabs be as delicious? I caught some of these little crabs and cooked them on the beach with my pan and butter. . . Ok, I put too much butter this time...but still I don't think it would make the results any different.

You don't know how to cook them. Cut up some onions, garlic, add a half table spoon of salt and black pepper, and stir fry it. When it's cooked, throw it in the trash.

He did it all wrong! First you carefully wash the sand fleas in the purest spring water (slightly chilled). Then in the skillet melt 2-3 tablespoons of butter, add some fresh minced garlic, salt, and pepper (maybe a dash of cayenne pepper). After a minute or so, AND THIS IS THE IMPORTANT STEP, throw away the sand fleas and add shrimp to the pan. Cook thoroughly and enjoy!

I just ate some about an hour ago. I caught them yesterday, left them in clean water over night in the fridge. Today I pulled them out, pulled the big shells and legs off. Washed the guts out, rolled them in flour and old bay, fried them in butter. They tasted great. It was like eating a fried soft crab. Everyone who tried them thought they were good. Even the kids tore them up

You did not cook them long enough. When cooked right the hard shell disintegrates in your mouth. The hard shell you had should of been red in color. It looked grey still. You really only want the hard shells not soft. I have cooked them for myself and kids and we enjoyed them. When done right they taste like lobster bisque. Don't give up. Keep the vids coming.

Lots of people eat shrimp shells, you just have to cook them a certain way to make them edible. Whole salt & pepper shrimp wok fried Cantonese style is meant to to be eaten with the shell on. It's where a lot of the flavor is when you season them and cook them right.

you were in a bit of a hurry there. You need leave them in clean water half hour or so so it will flush out sand caught in the shell and its hairy legs....lol, boil them, shell it. Just like you do prawns, the insides will come out as you shell it, but there is a art to it just like prawn or shelling of a crab. rinse it well, add a bit of oil, garlic, pepper, salt and to spice it up, add a bit of chillie powder... Crunchy and yummy.... Nutritious ? I wouldn't have a clue as there is not much of anything in it LOL...
Oh by the way, they are seasonal... they come ashore to breed.
