Among the surfers and beach-casting anglers, there’s a new visitor to San Francisco’s Ocean Beach shoreline.
Benjamin McInroe is there for only one reason -- to find Pacific mole crabs, a creature commonly known as “sand crabs” -- and the tiny animals whose burrowing causes millions of small bubbles to appear on the beach as the tide comes in and out.
McInroe is a graduate student from UC Berkeley studying biophysics. He wants to know what makes these little creatures so proficient at digging their way through the wet sand.
McInroe hopes that he can one day copy their techniques to build a new generation of digging robots.
-- What are Pacific Mole Crabs?
Pacific mole crabs, also known as sand crabs, are crustaceans, related to shrimp and lobsters. They have four pairs of legs and one pair of specialized legs in the front called uropods that look like paddles for digging in sand. Pacific mole crabs burrow through wet sand and stick their antennae out to catch bits of kelp and other debris kicked up by the breaking waves.
-- What makes those holes in the sand at the beach?
When the waves recede, mole crabs burrow down into the sand to keep from being exposed. They dig tail-first very quickly leaving holes in the wet sand. The holes bubble as water seeps into the holes and the air escapes.
-- What do birds eat in the wet beach sand?
Shore birds like seagulls rush down the beach as the waves recede to catch mole crabs that haven’t burrowed down quickly enough to escape. The birds typically run or fly away as the next wave breaks and rolls in.

How can you say
Better than pewdiepies quality
I love Lauren’s voice who narrates this .
She’s sounds adorable. No seriously I love her voice it’s so cute. Does anyone
Agree? You got to love her voice.😏
P.J. The RC Man Yeah, she's beautiful too.
I’ve been around these crabs my whole life and I always thought the head was where their rear end was 🤯

Bruh id literally capture these with my cousins and we’d use them as civilians for the sand town
LOL
Bruh
Who didn't. We had a surgical hospital too. We were bad boys
Since you're using, "bruh"... I'll assume that's not your picture.. 😆
How many crabs did you kill?
When I was a kid I thought their heads were their tails.
So when I would talk to them, I was talking to their butts.
Same, and we grew up calling them "sand fleas" lol...

Omg I thought they were oyster burrows
I love these mini documentaries so much
Thanks!
just tease to me
When I was a kid I always waited for the tide to recede at Venice Beach and stick my hand in the sand. You can feel them digging and it tickles. I used to love digging them up and watching them dig back into the shore.
My brother and I used to catch them at Cannon Beach in Oregon in the summer. At first I was creeped out by them but then I realized they're kind of cute and squishier than normal crabs lol
I used to think that they would dig into my hand, so I never tried to hold them
I grew up near the beaches in SoCal, and so did our daughter. It was such fun to introduce her to sand crabs and watch her go from ticklish squeals to hold-it-close-to see-it fascination.
My sister is creeped out by thost
Okay now that's deep
Scientists: Randomly grabs an innocent crab for some random experiment

Don't worry we won't eat ya ...... until we are hungry
well, it’s an incentive for them to dig into the next patch of sand they find

It's a good deal for them. They're well fed and safe from predators.
Boyfriend and I went walking on the beach late one evening and discovered thousands, the ground was alive with them. They looked amazing but felt very creepy underfoot.
Are you guys still together ?
@@hunterericson6782 : Same question one year later.... 🤣🤣😂😂
It's perplexing to me as to why this channel doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Trixiegirl88 AGREED!!!
Trixiegirl88 totally dude :(
One of the best on yt...if not the best natural science channel.
Half a million subscribers isn't half bad.
This kind of quality deserves at least one gajillion views per video, easy. Someone in PBS has to get in contact with a marketing dude or a UA-cam SEO guy or whatever and figure this stuff out. I recommend this channel to everyone I come across if the topic of UA-cam or nature comes up
It took me a while before realizing that I've actually seen them before. I know them as sand fleas.
Austin Chan the ones in the east coast are the best pompano bait
Fyi sand flea is a different thing
Lol same
They are sand fleas
Mole crabs are called sand fleas but they are very different from real sand fleas. Mole crabs do not bite like real sand fleas do.

I never knew they dug in backwards, and I used to play with them on the beach as a kid; fascinating details :)
I thought the same
blows my mind that they're always going backwards, lol
Ever try eating one? Very tasty

I loved making little aquariums in my sand bucket for them when I was little

"When you survive on chaos, fluidity is what is all about". Love that: it seems to somehow apply to everything in life.

We have those mole crabs on the Atlantic coast too. It is amazing how fast they can dig themselves into the sand.

It tried to hide between his fingers! How cute!
SO this is what they are called...mole crab...
I once went to a beach and dig up some of these...and wow, a living shrimp head!
大狐 they are also called "tasty treats". And they are. After 7 minutes in boiling water, anyways.
Sand Fiddlers.
I don't know if that is what people on the west coast call them, but on the east coast they are sand fiddlers. Mole crab makes sense too; however in my heart they will always be Sand Fiddlers.
Glad to see a new video. I can't wait for the next!
I think they're called Sand Fleas over on the West Coast, at least that's what I've heard them called.
They are called Sand Crabs. Im from Los Angeles. Of course, every little kid collects them in buckets and then forgets about them and they die :(
Coley Feifer yup, from LA too. They are Sand Crabs to me
Sand fleas
Over here in New York they call them Sand Fleas / Beach Fleas

I remember catching these guys in the beach when I was a kid using my feet to look for it 😍. But now there nowhere to be found because our beach got dirty and some poeple have these guys on their menu. 😢 How sad the late generation could not to see these astonishing creatures.
i was 5 and i saw my uncle quay eating them raw and i was a dum kid and ate them raw alive lol their still in oregon coast
*"It's dig or die, dude!"*
Haha lol
Way Better Then National Geographic
Mole crab is called 'undur-undur laut' in Indonesia, or at least in Central Java, which literally means 'sea ant lion,' because both animals dig their burrows backwards. 'Undur-undur' itself means "(an animal which is) walking backwards."
Oh, and mole crab tastes good too fried. LOL. But do not over consume it, it will make you dizzy.
Great information.
Luthfi Ramadhan Here people call them sand fleas and I've seen some people fry them with butter.
Luthfi Ramadhan They can make you dizzy? How’s that?
@@amorphous1964 I read a review about eating mole crabs. It said that sometimes they eat the tentacles of Portuguese man or war, but that's only in the Atlantic. Furthermore, there are no studies showing any danger of eating mole crabs that have done this, and no warnings. But that's as close as I got.
Hex Maniac Gabby is it just a little bit of butter
I've always wondered how they dig so fast. Thank you for elucidating this behavior.
I see these all over the beach. But this video makes me appreciate their presence more

Last month I made a journey with some friends from college, we went to Buenaventura, Colombia and found these little friends. We collect one because we don't know what they are and bring them to the lab to study it and just in time i found this video on my feed. Thank you so much ❤️❤️
You guys should design a school course
These little movies about the overlooked animals all around us are so cool, and especially because I see many of these animals a lot
As a person who lives in California, I can say that these guys are extremely common.
Everytime my family went to a beach, me and my siblings (and maybe my cousins and friends) would dig into the sand just to find them.
Good memories we had.
I love these things 😊 every time I'd go to the beach with my family I'd always dig them up, examine them, and release them back into the wild.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CHANNEL
Reasons:
-I learn
-I'm interested
-Its not boring

wow the was done very well and interesting. Never knew they existed and I watch a lot of documentaries. First time watcher immediately subscribed!!!
So cute! I used to see these guys digging in the beach, and see the holes they made!
The video shot underwater is amazing.
The sand makes it difficult to see what's happening when it's digging. Maybe if they can find some transparent material that has an index of refraction close to sea water...
I found one of these little guys last year during a trip to the beach. I was looking for sea shells but I found something digging into the sand, so I dug it out... I've never seen this thing before. I took several pictures and when I was back at the hotel I did some research and finally found its name.
Life is amazing.
illusiwind life can also be quite tasty. Did you eat them?
Nathan Lang If you google "sand crabs" videos, many people already did that. After watching some of them, I decided it's not worth the effort, so I didn't try that myself. :)
I was watching another video and notification for this popped up. I had to click it ASAP.
