I wonder why they don’t just use normal soul crystals. I guess doing things in a safe and effective manner isn’t really the Empire’s mo. But if a certified goober like Martyn can find a way to mint new bespoke soul crystals then it can’t be that hard.
Garleans have a distrust of magic and also cant physically use it, so they use the crystals via magitech. If you hand them a job stone, it wouldn't be able to help them. Their version forces the magic through, causing their soul to be overwritten, and turning them into a creature that can use magic, kind of like a magitech version of tempering / primal transformation.
@@Zadamanim The only exception to this to boot is the Reaper job crystal. Since for them to make that work, given their natural lack of aether control, they literally had to make a pact with a Voidsent...
@@SilverNightbane We can use the reaper job crystal because of the garlean lady in Uldah that trains us, but the actual garlean reapers did not use job crystals, they passed down the art through manuscripts and training against dolls.
People are noting the reaper job stone... i dont think it is an exception. They ought to be able to use normal soul crystals just fine so long as the techniques within do not require aether usage their bodies are incapable of. The off brand version though is usable by the rest of their technology. Cant plug a soul stone into anything other than a persons soul directly and HOPE for good results. The Great Value version showcased here doesnt have that restriction, you can slot that into a computer and review the contents or mail it out elsewhere, copy it and use it in other ways than 1. Heck just training videos based on the best of their craft.
@@robertmarsh5322 Garleans do not use job stones because they are magical, not magitech. The magitech version of a job stone, or at least the closest they have been able to achieve, is the oversoul system in the ruby/emerald/diamond/sapphire weapons. The oversoul system takes what is essentially a job stone (or a bunch of data) and "rewrites" someone's being with the data contained within it. Instead of being able to draw from the data and adapt it to magically gain new powers, they are corrupted in a way similar to tempering.
I feel like if this is actual lore then it was likely retconned lore, because I swear I thought I had read somewhere that it was more of a design thing to mimic the Garlean third eye, at least back in ARR times.
It actually might be an offshoot or the inspiration for it. Iirc, the largest concentration of Reapers we know of, aside from those in Ul'dah, is the Garlean Reapers that helped Emet-Selch, which helped create the Empire by acting as pre Imperial shock troops or specialized infantry. We fight through their old hideout in Lapis Manalis. Eventually though, Emet realized that the pacts with Voidsent their power came from may have allowed them to detect his "Ascian-ness" through his attempts at covering his aether. In Lapis Manalis, we find a note that confirms their order's last official leader went off to assassinate Emet's public persona and came back scared shitless. Some time later, those Reapers got steamrolled and the area remained untouched, until we found it in 6.3
It’s a “regular” soul crystal, but one that channels the Voudsent’s/avatar’s aether instead of the wielder due to the Garleans’ lack of natural aetheric control. Though I also imagine that such control is why the WoL and ENDWALKER SPOILERS!!! Zenos ENDWALKER SPOILERS!!!! I would say this is spoiling the plot for me. But I have no idea where in the plot this would matter nor do I think I would remember this by the time it did
Ruby weapon storyline had me so messed up. That was so sad
Interesting! I always thought they were just some sort of design, but the fact they have a reason is really interesting.

Makes me wonder where such Aetheric Recording will be pushed forward. It is a way of effective immortality.
So glad I've already done the Ruby Weapon trials before clicking on this video

Of course Garlemald would make the Relic from Cyberpunk.

So technically the reaper job stone is a garlean soul crystal?
