The early vocals weren't kanye. The autotune is a stylistic choice, there are songs where he sings without it, he's just always trying new things lol

As someone who has always had a strong preference for hard rock, classic rock, alternative and grunge, I actually really liked this Kanye album. Kids See Ghosts is another project of his that I really enjoy.
KSG is also my personal favorite from Kanye/Cudi. I think they nailed that psych rap style down to a T.
You'd probably really like Kanye's album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy then, a lot of outwardly prog rock influence on that album
As of recent Kanye has adopted a style of using roughs and demo versions of his or other vocals and using those instead of a cleaner finished version. He has stated it makes it seem more pure and authentic, even if some things aren’t polished and or even coherent, for example the opening vocals.
You should check out Hold My Liquor, Black Skinhead, or POWER from him.
Definitely check out POWER, it's like prog rock but with rapping, based on King Crimson's track '21st Century Schizoid Man', very layered stuff

this is the very first time I have ever heard any Kanye West song. My nephew has been trying to get me to listen to him for years and has toted him as an amazing artist. I'm getting the feeling that this is about mental health and the vocal and composition seems to mimic some messed up feelings... I could be totally wrong but that's what I'm getting...
You are right that the song is mostly about mental health and the sound reflects that.This song is part of a batch that was made just after one of Kanye’s manic episodes and he holed himself in a studio in Wyoming and made some projects in a short span of time. On this album Kanye liked to use demo vocals rather than finished lines because he likes the rawness and pure emotion. Most other Kanye projects don’t do this and there isn’t any “mumbling” and are overall more “finished” sounding. Good job picking up on the feelings Kanye was trying to show. Just wanted to add further context to the song.

Great reaction bro, the unpleasant beat and mumbling was indeed orchestrated intentionally to reflect the manic and bipolar episode this album was emulating. This record was initially meant to be a completely different album, but was completely scrapped and remade from scratch within a couple of weeks after the tmz incident. This doesn't scratch the surface of his production back catalogue - check out some cuts like Devil in a New Dress, Roses, New Slaves, Saint Pablo and Family Business
The mumbling is to present the authenticity and rawness of the track
the intro vocals and the chorus vocals u seemed to dislike were artists PARTYNEXTDOOR and kid cudi, the rest was kanye and 070 shake

First verse vocals were by a guy named PartyNextDoor, chorus ('I've been trying to make you love me') is by an artist named Kid Cudi, the second verse ('Someday we gon' set it off') is Kanye West, and the outro ('nothing hurts anymore, I feel kind of free') is by an artist named 070 Shake. Cudi's chorus would be a lot better but I also cringe slightly at the bum note he hits on the word 'try' in 'everything I try'. You definitely liked Kanye's vocals a lot more I noticed, he sings more straightforward
Great job with the assessment of the song. As someone who prefers more R&B, rap, etc., I was not expecting you to even come close to giving it a fair shake. I had a friend of mine send me a country song once (and the twanginess of country music normally drives me crazy), but I absolutely loved it. And I sent her a rap song. She told me that she LOVED it, so it's interesting what we can do if we open up our minds. I think most people listen to a lot of songs and just like them or don't, but they don't pay much attention to the details (why they do or don't like the songs). It's just a simple, "it's pleasing to my ear or not". So it's cool to hear you step through the song and pick out the parts - how it's put together, the instruments used, the blend, the changes, etc.
I noticed the one thing that bothered you the most was the mumbling in Kanye's first verse. Now that you know (assume you do by now) that it's by design to simulate his struggle with mental issues like being bipolar, does that change anything in terms of your overall assessment of the song? I really enjoyed your video - was really looking for you to rip it apart, so was really surprised. Thanks for sharing.

Most of kanyes projects lately(not just music) he has used the minimalistic approcach. Especially on a song like this, where the vocal message is so powerful.

I think the off key bits are purposeful and deliberate. They make you feel some highs and lows. Given his rumoured bi polar diagnosis this isn't surprising. Kanye's music isn't my genre but I quite like this. It seems to have a lot of layers to it.
He knows he really enjoyed that, please more Kanye reactions mainly Runaway and Hold My Liquor.
I respect your musical knowledge and appreciation for a lot of points on this song, but Kanye's vocals on the verse almost sound raw and it did surprise me a little that you would suggest that he could just be talking and using autotune to pitch it. You can hear a lot of points where he's straining his voice to hit notes and while it isn't technically impressive, I respect how raw and vulnerable it sounds.

I see you have it downloaded on your computer. I think it might have gotten a bit compressed or something, because it sounds like the audio quality is lower than if i listen on spotify or youtube. Might be part of the reason why you complain it sounds too dirty at times.

That’s made in studio, the guitar. If you hear guitar or synth in a Kanye song (that doesn’t sound like a sample), it’s usually Mike Dean playing it, a co-producer of sorts of Kanye’s stuff.

This song is one of the most haunting Kanye tracks I’ve ever heard, it has such a positive sound but there’s constant stylistic choices that put you on edge. And the line “I put my hand on a stove, to see if I still bleed, and nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda free” hits me so hard as there’s been points in my life where I’m devoid of any emotion, sympathy, or general feeling and although I know it’s almost wrong for me to feel that way it’s extremely liberating and I feel unstoppable.

Is this mumble rap? I'm so confused... the moment I have hope in the song he sounds like he did drink "all the wine" and I can't understand a thing. The better bits of the song sound like it might be Kid Kudi (the deeper, richer more audible parts)
It’s not mumble rap, it’s raw vocals from Kanye, something you start to experiment with after being a rapper/musician for almost 2 decades..
If you ever hear a leaked unfinished Kanye song, he “mumbles” over the beat to find the rhythm and flow, something a lot of musicians do.. there is a line or two in this song where it’s still reminiscence of the demo track in this song before he had finished the lyrics, a theme in this album is all the songs kinda sound like demos, but it is a stylistic choice for better or worse… if you’d like to hear more polished Kanye he’s got 8-10 full studio albums that are fully polished compared to this one.
Not a fan. But I give him props for trying to be different and not sound like the polished crap using the same tempo, chord progression, over sampled pop crap that’s out now.

Ok, I totally disagree with David. I didn’t enjoy it at all. You are out of your mind with a 7.7 or whatever it was. I couldn’t wait for this thing to be over. I have heard so much that this guy (Kanye) is a genius. At what? The two points David brought up about the nasal and mumbling....I don’t get. What purpose did it serve? Certainly not for enjoyment. “Let me see how bad I can sound and people still will lap it up.” The best part was probably the music track, and even it sucked. Please tell me this is not part of the genius collection. This was just warmed up garbage. I give it a 3 point...doesn’t even matter what the next number would be. It would be so infinitesimal. I feel good with that score. 😳
So, there you have it. I couldn’t do David’s job, because I would have stopped this and said don’t send me this crap any more. He looked at the intricacies of this thing and said this was good and that was good. No, I need to go cleanse my musical pallet with something, anything of true goodness. I’m out.

Metal IS the guitar, so no matter, you aren’t going to like it. Lyrically, I liked the line about she loves Jesus, but learned a lot from Satan. Very contemplative. But overall as a song, I have to tap out. If you like it, more power to you. It is just the reason I can’t do what Dave does.

Kanye actually incorporates ALOT of Rock elements into his music btw. If I have to recommend a few tracks of his for you to try it’d probably be “Devil in a New Dress” or “Hold my Liquor” both incredible songs!

I can almost guarantee that his album MBDTF is more complex and artistically impressive than anything your favorite artist has released
