There were a few times they left themselves wide open to an attack the other didn't take, but overall yes, well done. I just watched battles from the first 6 movies and they depended so much on jump cuts and laser flashes... I couldn't make sense of what was happening from a technical pov. This was much better.
I love how this scene was so organic, I could feel an emotional connection with the Jedi and her child, and the intensity of the sith and the deep story between them without ever being introduced to one. This was Star Wars, Disney should give you the rights and the budget for a new trilogy
Impressive work right there, and that kid using the force to save her mother totally gave me the kid Starkiller vibes and good thing it didn't end the same for her :D
7 minutes of pure love and talent. The acting was on point and not cringe worthy. The music is outstanding. The choreography was 10/10. This is what Disney will never understand. Wow.
Yup. No cringe at all. Unlike Disney which was non stop, eye squitin', arse clencin' , nauseating inducin' cringe-fest. I was completely engaged with this story and even felt sad when she was stabbed. Unlike how I felt with Rey, which was "Won't somebody PLEASE shoot her"
@@sledgehammer301 you’re so right! anyone that likes the sequels need to get their head out their arses I think. It completely ruins the sky walker saga and it ruins Luke story. They had every opportunity to make a brand new story but instead fucked it. Rey was the worse thing to come out of the sequels. It’s not cannon in my eyes.
Now I'm not a sequel fan by any means, but there's hardly any acting in this whatsoever, so how are you going to compare them? There's literally not a single line of dialogue in this so how is that fair
Men don't get goosebumps from anything but being suddenly submerged in cold air or cold water. Only intellectual males, children and genuine females get so taken by emotion that goosebumps emerge. Seek inner stillness and you shall overcome such weakness, same method removes the weakness called "cringing."
It's a 7 minute video with a generic mother fighting for her daughter plot, acting is basic as there is so little to act in the scene, stunt work is debatable as they have no stunts happening, cinematography, production design and directing just is not better than disney star wars, you'd have to be a special kind of bias or stupid to genuinely think that. The only thing this does better is some of the choreography, but that only beats Rey, Kylo and all other disney era characters or duels all feature decent to amazing choreography, the Acolyte being the peak so far, which is unfortunate as it didn't get it's second season. All in all, this short is cool, but not something that blows the real stuff out the water. Not like S38 does when compared to the fencing for elderly we got in A new hope.
Cool lightsaber duel. I can see this happening right after RoTS, and Jedi go into hiding. This felt like a mother Jedi knight desperately trying to run from an Inquisitor. You could feel the hope and the reason to fight on when she looked at her child. Excellent work.
I agree, except for the fact that a Jedi of that era wouldn't be a mother. As far as we know, Anakin was the only one who broke the no personal attachments rule. I see this as a survivor of Order 66 trying to protect a youngling who for some reason wasn't at the Jedi temple at the time of Anakin's massacre, from an Inquisitor. Either way it was still bloody good.
I love this interpretation of a vision! The rough, fragmented images bleeding into reality like a glitching screen keeps us rooted in the present yet aware of the future. Also - the lightsaber pike is used so well!
I'm still flabbergasted how this has more emotional drama and a more exciting lightsaber fight than Disney pouring hundreds of millions into their TV shows and movies. I mean look at the last Jedi, that throne room battle was absolutely embarrassing for a large budget movie. And even though this dual needs some spit and polish from a bigger budget, it was fantastic.
Not me...I had a lot of emotions after the final two movies. Believe me none of them were good. When everyone was complaining about the prequels. The force was saying "you wait you fckrs"
And yet, without the duels in the movies, the fans who make these videos wouldn't be figuring out how to take what was done in the movies to the next level. Best lightsaber duel in the star wars movies was in Ep1. Ep3's was great, too, but single blade vs lightstaff introduced an entirely new dynamic. That was an inspiration to fan film makers, and they have been one-uping it, and each other, ever since.
@J. E. M Sequels? When did this happen and why wasn't I told? :D I know what the OP was referring to. But let's face it, the duels in the sequels barely qualified to use the word. Just some arbitrary saber swinging and clashing just to tick off "Lightsaber scene" from the list of Star Wars tropes they had to put in to barely earn the right to slap "Star Wars" on the label. But hey... It's good to know that if I want a good lightsaber duel fix, There's all these great fan productions that not only do them right, but are constantly daring to mix things up to keep it fresh.
Wonderfully done. Not only was this the best use of a light-pike I’ve ever seen, but I loved how creative the ending was. Not ending the duel with a saber, but with the jagged end of the broken pike. Amazing
That was a great touch. Star Wars always seems to forget that anything sharp can still be a weapon. She didn’t have her saber, but she still had an effective spear.
@@parksnewbornportraiture4989 sure, sure, personally not getting the decision to go for forsce-pulling a stick as opposed to just picking a blade, lying right under her, and I'm trying to put myself in her shoes here really hard... imagine a 7 minute short telling us more about a protagonist's motives, values, and personality than an entire 3 episode series of 2 hour movies. I want to see more of this character. she's amazing.
i have a lot more to say about this actually. it ended up on my suggested videos again. i wont say most of what i have to say. but here's the thing. if a hero isn't afraid, and weak, they are not a hero. if a hero doesn't have a conviction so strong that they look to it and gain whatever they need to face death, they aren't a hero. this female hero is THE hero. she is a role model to all humans. she believes completely that she will die, and she proceeds with as much strenght as she can straight into it for the sake of her convictions. this is how you create a female hero.
I just saw this in my feed. Unreal. So good. Better than most SW stuff in recent years! Mando and Grogu rule the galaxy. They could use her help! HERO!
Head cannon is that it immediately cautorizes the wound upon exiting. Survival entirely depends where your stuck so to speak. Your intestines can take alot of damage compared to your lungs, heart, liver, etc. We know this from ballistics. So pure heat gone in partially, and not wiggled around or slashed from inside can be an optimal outcome. Albeit any contact from a lightsaberblade can be deadly and IRL "lightsaber" plasma weapons are scary dangerous to the point you wouldn't even duel with them and if you did you would kill/maim with every cheap shot you can imagine easily. Be thankful star wars lore dictates Honor and trained styles fighting with minimal fuckery mid fight. Otherwise starwars would be a hasty gorefest.
@@fallunlight9724 My head canon is that lightsabers don't actually project heat very far beyond the width of the blade itself, and in that scene where Qui-gon is melting the blast doors with his 'saber, he's using the Force to spread the heat through the metal. This helps me to rationalize cauterization vs complete vaporization of internal organs.
I love both the execution and the theme. I was wondering what the twist would be, or if there was one at all, and it was wonderful to see how despite seeing her apparent doom she chose to fight and how it paid off in the end
Best lightsaber fan film I have seen in many, many years! Choreography, cinematography, acting, music, sound, costumes, location, amazing all around! Haven't kept up with the contest in years now but I hope this does well!
Let's just put aside the fact that everything was shot and directed beautifully and point out the amazing choreography for a minute. Wow. Great work you guys.
Gonna start by saying I really liked this, but that doesn't absolve it from criticism. I see so many people ripping Disney apart for how getting stabbed by a lightsaber is meaningless now, and here we see the same thing in a fan made video...
Very good. Story within the duel was very well thought out and very well shot. My one critque (and this is coming from someone who has practiced a two man fighting form), is that there were a few moments were one was waiting for the other's attack. One thing that sells a fight is that each blow is struck with the intent of hurting the other. One of the points of choreography is that the opponant knows where the attack will land and knows how to deal with it. The mindset should be, if you get hurt with an attack you know is coming in, it's your fault.
Amazing, Max! I loved this. So much emotion through the entire thing. Definitely rivals Loyalty. The fight was brutal and gripping, and kept me wondering if it would end the way her premonition foretold. And Emily was great too! She did a great job matching the emotional intensity of scene. This is definitely one to be proud of.
My God. Stumbled on this and what a goddamn work of cinema. There are so many things that make this good. Your shoot location, the color grading, the really subtle lens flares. When the sith shows up and we first see him the in reflection of the water. I think what makes this so much more effective and captivating than other lightsaber shorts I've seen is from the very beginning, each moment of the fight is advancing the story telling around this character. She kneels in the beginning to be more one with the force, to dispel the fear she feels. Also, the choreography isn't just people bashing sabers together. There are a ton of little story beats in each bit. She's trying to break his staff, he's trying to use the force to throw her off balance. Also, there are real stakes. The emotional center of this piece is her son. We as the audience don't want to see him see her die. Fucking incredible work, not just from a cinematography perspective, but from a storytelling perspective as well.
Sorry for the replys from people who don't understand the nuances in storytelling, great analysis! You clearly know how a good fight scene should be constructed.
That was f***ing brilliant! Emotionally gripping, fantastic choreography and very well acted and filmed. Well done to all. I’ll defo be rewatching this
I really respect how this captures the aesthetic, cinematography and character of a Star Wars movie. Most fan made movies are just action flicks with lightsabers but this captured the feel perfectly. The creator truly understands his craft.
The music in this is slept on, killer score! Really tied the whole short together. Also amazing performances as well! I feel like LCC entries don’t always have the best acting but you guys nailed it.
Might've been short, but you literally crammed so much glorious star wars feels into this video. I actually began to tear up with the ending. Bravo, and Encore. This was amazing!
Really well done, I like the idea of the emotional bond between a parent and child helping them connect deeper with the force in the moment of greatest need.

BRILLIANT!!! This was beyond words awesome! To the actors and writers behind this: very, very well done! The fan based talent out there is what Disney NEEDS to look for to keep the SW franchise alive. Plain and simple.
how did you guys manage to put plot twists in a film barely longer than 5 minutes and with no overarching story/plot context in the first place??? so simple and so genius. 10/10 did watch again
The sound design is really what stands out for me. And I feel like the entire production from costumes to acting to sfx are amazing! The sound design just really really landed with me. Fantastic job to your team! I’d love to see what you could make if Disney hired you for a feature length film!
This is absolutely fantastic...I love the design of the staff saber and the staff is made of beskar but its still added with other elements that's why it was able to break (That's my assumption anyway). The fight as well is really done well and the VFX of the lightsaber is crisp. Edit: I forgot to add this in...WHY DID IT TAKE ME 2 WEEKS TO KNOW THIS VID EXISTED.
I've never be a huge Star Wars fan, but have alway enjoyed the early movies. I'm trying to understand how these people made a better Star wars then Disney has with their billions? Good job guys.
As a film student this is gorgeous to look at, every shot is aesthetically pleasing and the special effects look so real! You made the protagonists relatable and most importantly the choreography, though simple, was easy to follow and effective for telling this story. Take a sub 🔥
I’m a first generation SW fan. Over the last decade or so, thanks to UA-cam, I have seen the SW legacy continues strong…but not with the new Disney films BUT with the fan films. Thank you for sharing this story and work. Thanks to everyone out there who make amazing SW fan films. The fan films competition is simply better and better every year
Felt absolutely natural. Fantastic work! I think these fan-based works are often exceeding what is coming out of the professional studios. The day is coming when the fan base will have their day on the big screen. I can feel it... and it's not a bad feeling. Looking forward to more!
I echo that sentiment wholeheartedly...to this day, the 'Grayson' fanmade trailer is memorable as one of the most impactful DC trailers to date (came out maybe 2002-05 can't recall lol). This was composed very impressively, down to the offspring having the Force, similar to the Child (Grogu) in his introduction to Mando. Passionate projects like these can't go unnoticed by the masses forever--the industry needs to evolve.
This is a slap to everything Disney has done to the Star Wars Universe. I'm 7 minutes, you've conveyed more about it than Disney has even attempted. Great job good sir.
First: this is amazing, you guys just gave me Hope again for good SW content when i finally think that all was lost. Thank you so much. Second: Tell me again how Star Wars fan don’t love strong female lead, I’ll wait here watching this gem for the third time Third: the way the red light saber retract at 6:31, very nice, don’t think your attention to details goes unoticed. It was amazing thanks again. Mtfbwu
That was absolutely incredible. While not a technically complex fight (still excellent and real and not too fancy for the tone), the story being told throughout is what will make this memorable. Thank you. Also, I'm partial to light-pikes, so that made me happy.
Firstly, love this so much! The Lightsaber Pike is criminally underutilized elsewhere so I loved seeing it here, and I adored the choreography. By far my favorite move was the Sith's opener, using the force to pull the lightsaber down and break her guard is extremally clever and makes it makes so much sense (it's a surprise attack that could end the fight before it even gets started), and I love seeing them fight with more than just the lightsaber (because in a fight you do anything you can to win, not just swing your laser sword around like they do in the movies cause "oh shiny"). One constructive note though (from someone who isn't any sort of authority) I felt like she could have easily slid her lightsaber blade along the pike and slice his fingers off to disarm him. All in all, very well done.
I feel like they didn't have her do that for two reasons: 1. The fight needs to be longer than 1 minute. 2. It's not a very jedi-like thing to do. That said, the jedi are known to be hypocrits...
Getting passed a pike's blade is not as easy as just sliding down it as there are a number of guards a pikeman (real word, I swear) can use to prevent this. It doesn't help that a sword would be at a disadvantage due to the pike having superior range. That said, should a swordsman find themselves able to slip passed a pike's guard, they absolutely should take advantage of it. If I was to criticize the fight choreography at all, it would be that the guy should have kept fighting with the pole arm after the woman chopped off the blade since it was clearly made of some material (probably beskar) that can withstand a lightsaber. That, however, would just be a small critique of what is otherwise a solid and very creative lightsaber duel. I liked it a lot.
This is so well made from the sound design to the choreography. The music is spot on, and the editing and cinematography is executed properly to allow the scene to breath and flow. There was more emotional impact in this one video than the whole of the sequel trilogy, great work from everyone involved.
These brilliant people pulled off in 7 minutes what Disney has come sisterly failed to do, give us a story with heart, great action, and suspense. This is the most Star Wars thing I’ve seen in a very long time. Love the introduction of the pike style weapon.
You and your team, in all the years I've been a fan, have never disappointed. I've been waiting and hoping for a new film to pop up on your channel and when I saw that you had a new entry for sabercon, I was ecstatic! Well done on this film! Everyone involved in its making, should be very proud...I look forward to seeing more from you. Cheers!
I welled up with tears at the end 😭 An amazing story with excellent choreography and execution, and one that captures the true spirit of star wars: good against evil, and protecting the one's you love ❤
Everything about this was efficient, emotional, and amazingly well-done. The choice of location didn’t shift dramatically like with movie scenes, and the choreography and physicality of the duel- both combatants using elbows, kicks, punches and the Force as direct attacks- was far better than anything flashy visuals or massive set pieces could have brought. Also, the pike-saber is cool as hell. 10/10!

Gotta love how this fan film has better writing, acting, stunt work, cinematography, production design and directing than anything Disney+ has put out
It's a 7 minute video with a generic mother fighting for her daughter plot, acting is basic as there is so little to act in the scene, stunt work is debatable as they have no stunts happening, cinematography, production design and directing just is not better than disney star wars, you'd have to be a special kind of bias or stupid to genuinely think that.
Then you must be very biased against Disney
I was really hoping for a plot twist of the sort: green saber Jedi gets defeated, child runs to red saber Jedi, screaming "daddy!!!!!!".

@J. E. M Sequels? When did this happen and why wasn't I told? :D
I know what the OP was referring to.

Amazing

Rule of the SW New Age - nobody dies from a lightsaber stab.
Saber as hot as the sun that can melt a blast door doesn’t kill you when it’s shoved into fleshly organs. This shit needs to stop happening.
Yeah that's the most lame thing in this woke era
@@fallunlight9724
My head canon is that lightsabers don't actually project heat very far beyond the width of the blade itself, and in that scene where Qui-gon is melting the blast doors with his 'saber, he's using the Force to spread the heat through the metal. This helps me to rationalize cauterization vs complete vaporization of internal organs.
@Vigilante8841 I like your angle. Entirely plausible. Ty.
I love both the execution and the theme. I was wondering what the twist would be, or if there was one at all, and it was wonderful to see how despite seeing her apparent doom she chose to fight and how it paid off in the end

They took a throw away scene and turned it into a meaningful scene. Bravo. This is what Starwars needs so badly right now.
All in all, very well done.
i agree with everything you said! well written comment!
I feel like they didn't have her do that for two reasons:
1. The fight needs to be longer than 1 minute.
2. It's not a very jedi-like thing to do.
That said, the jedi are known to be hypocrits...
@@ThatDudeWithSunglasses Some were. Stereotyping sucks in fiction or reality.
