I've got a '97 and just had this problem yesterday. One thing I don't understand is why they don't have a latch to open it from the inside? That made car-camping last summer kind of annoying, when I had to use a door instead.
Hi, I have a 1998 4Runner and have had the problem the back lack won't open the liftgate when I pull on the hand latch it moves easily but not catching to open the latch. I have replaced the Genuine Toyota 69350-35020 Door Lock Assembly and seemed like it worked for a minute and now the same problem. If I use my key in the lock and turn it to the left as the window starts to come down the latch will engage and I can open the liftgate. Soon as I close it right back to where I started. Also, note the driver's lock and unlock button works fine for all doors but doesn't do anything for the liftgate latch. I am frustrated on what other parts could be causing this. Ok for a follow-up. I disconnected the battery and while it was disconnected I took the panel off and looked at and inspected everything. The metal rod/arm that opens and is connected at both ends is fine and nothingi broken. Just a loose handle :(
This guy is very good and awesome. my daughter had this same car and had this same issue, we followed him through all the steps and fixed her car
Glad it helped... that's why I made the video.
Thank you ! I removed mine and taped the screws to the liftgate. STILL LOST THEM. That was 2 years ago.
Awesome. Looks like a great place to add some sound damping material, too. On the rear door skin, and on the inside of the plastic panel too
