EXCELLENT job of explaining and showing what to do! I wish everyone posting "How To" viseos would watch your video here. They could really lean how to create a really helpful video!! Thank you!!
Thank you for recording this. I fixed my tailgate latch (2011 limited) all on my own💪. It's was a tight fit to get the latch back through but I finally got it.
Great video! I just drove home 30 mi with my hatch ratchet strapped, and then spent 30 minutes messing with it because it will not latch. Finally got it closed, I guess I need to order this part. Mine was super corroded like this one. Freaking Toyotas, my Volvo is 6 years older with way more miles and the latch looks like brand new.
I have the same problem. Mine won't stay latched. I can close the hatch and hear the actuator close then open. Did you order a new part and if you did, did that fix the problem?
@@FinsandFur-y7c I ordered the part shortly after watching this video, but I was lazy about it over the winter, I just avoided using the hatch and only used the rear window. I went to replace it this spring, and to my surprise the latch just fine. The last time I had it open. I had sprayed the heck out of it with penetrating lubricant, apparently that worked its way in and freed it up while it was sitting. A few months later, it's still working fine with no issues. I held on to the part in case this issue ever pops up again.
1st step before crawling in the back to get to the emergency release & would be to remove the ECU-B fuse or removed the battery negative to reset the door latch. That has worked in every case this has happened in my 2004 4runner.
For the tailgate switch, I used a 1/4 Phillips bit and a small pair of vice grips. Ideally i'd have used a ratcheting 1/4 wrench but I don't have one... I was able to screws out, then undo the right license plate light. You'll be able to fidget and get the switch disconnected and the replacement through. It is extremely fidgety to do it this way but I didn't break anything. Ideally the job should be completed as they show in the video, where you remove the entire "4Runner" trim piece that the switch is a part of.
Good Job, mine's at 2008 4Runner and my problem just started, I don't think it's the locking mechanism, I think it's the switch on the exterior pad. No rust/ corrosion on lock But the pad for your fingers is toast, it turns to bubble gum here in Florida in the summer. Nice video, did you get both part's from Amazon? Didn't finish vid, LoL Peace from FL 🌴
Just ordered this part going to install soon. I still don't get the string though If we know we can open it from inside as you showed, what is the point of the string? Thanks! I am also having issues with my back window. 2015 limited, fuses are all good, when i press the up/down switch on center console, i hear it tick but nothing is happening. Hard to find any info online I also have a broken bezel, cannot find one anywhere and Toyota wants $450 CAD I have the one with the up/down lock unlock buttons Thanks for your help!
My 2010 tailgate only unlocks/widow rolls down only with the engine turned on. I’m going to replace the latch anyways but suspect the problem might be an annoying wiring issue.
I’ve got a 2007 and this past winter started having this problem. Ironically every time I bring it to Toyota (an hour away) it mysteriously works. Then when I get home and load my trunk with stuff, it decides to not work for me. So irritating.. Only problem I’ve ever had with this vehicle.
Yeah we just picked up a sequoia as well and it has the same issue. Luckily they sell these latches readily available on Amazon for most of these toyota SUV’s.
Had the OEM actuator fail. Replaced with Chinese Knock Off (CKO) from Amazon. It lasted about 6 months. Will not latch. Switch making noise down at actuator, but moving nothing. Ordered a Toyota OEM actuator.
how did you determine which part to start with? my latch works once if i reset the fuse. however, the key wont work for the window and neither will the fob
Does the key fob twist freely in the tailgate keyhole? Does the key fob lock/unlock buttons work? Does the window come down via the switch in the car? If yes, then something faulty in tailgate. If the switch works only once after a fuse cycle, maybe it’s a faulty switch (common for these to get water damaged).
I replaced the latch. But the truck is still seeing that the tailgate is open, but it is closed. I can lock the gate with the key (physical way) but I cannot lock with the electrical way. I tried to unplug the battery for 10min and still doesn’t work. Got any tips?
Didi the wife's 2012 exactly as showed... now it closes but thinks it open with dash lights, cargo lights and that damn chime! Anyone know how to fix? I disconnected the battery - how long? Didn't do anything! HELP - I'm in the dog house
Anyone else replace this and now continually get an "Open tailgate" image on the dash? The 4runner just beeps (Like a door is open) when you hit lock and the interior lights stay on like a door is open... yet the hatch is shut. if I unplug the rear latch then i can lock and drive normally. Obviously without the rear latch working

Hey I have a 2011 limited as well. Did you have a problem where it says the trunk is open even though its closed after replacing it as well?
@@DepthSeek check all your connectors and make sure no bent pins or loose connections
@MJAltairy made sure all were good. Even put the old one back which did say it was closed.

Thank you for the tutorial. I have been having issues whenever the temperature drops below -10c. Looks like I will be having a little project.
Any way you could show JB Welding the tabs back onto that bezel? Would be nice to learn how to recover from an 'oops.'
Exactly what I need. Thank you
Great instructional video, I’m going to replace my hood latch today - thanks!
Any issues with Aftermarket parts ?
So far it’s been solid!

You can do this! Watch this video step by step. I just replaced mine. It was a little intimidating but you can handle it. ❤

I read on another thread that disconnecting the battery will reset this..
So far so goo

U will be sorry u used amazon parts. Those cheap china parts will last 3 months then u can do it again with the correct oem parts
11months since this video was posted. Currently going through its 2nd winter, a couple muddy offroad trips and has held up great so far!
