Marko's ability to not only sing, but to fill every vibe of his vocal chords with layered emotions, is truly award worthy. There are few like him, especially when you factor in his ability to act in their videos. Whether it is the guy walking down the street, the dark clown setting fire to the world in 'Daze", or the jester in "Harlequin". Every part he plays is well acted and believable.
Great taste Dave, POTF are without a doubt musical genius! I used to play Carnival Of Rust on repeat because it is such a beautiful song and it is the one that most people react too. However as I've gotten deeper into listening to Poets I've discovered there is so much more to them. They have touched me in a way that only one other band ever has in my entire life. Marko's voice is the best that I've ever heard. Hauntingly beautiful and also rich and embracing, the other band members bring fantastic elements of their own. I particularly love the piano/keyboard in their songs. The lyrics are stunning, videos entertaining and addictive. I had the pleasure of seeing them in Manchester last year and they are absolutely amazing live too!
They are NOT a major label band and never have been. They had offers, but turned all of them down wanting to remain independent and retain their creative freedom. Marko, the singer, studied Graphic Design among other things and had his own company before he decided it wasn’t what he wanted to do for the rest of his life and instead chose to pursue a career in music. His experience and knowledge as graphic designer certainly helps with the creation of their videos and album artwork. Everything they ever put out, they produced on their own small label called Insomniac, while the Scandinavian label Playground Music is merely responsible for the distribution of their records.
They are a fantastic live band. Please react to Lift and Carnival of rust from their Moscow concert in 2013 and Angel from the Alexander Theater sessions. Also other videos like Requiem for my Harlequin (there`s an analyze video of this song, which explains all the symbolism and meaning in the video, really interesting), Daze and False kings. Fantastic stuff. Marko Saaresto, the lead vocalist has had classical training to his beautiful bass-baritone voice and also studied English.
They wanted control of their band, so they made their own label (Insomniac). There are, like, 2 bands that are a part of that label. So I wouldn't call it a "major label". I'm more of a fan of their older albums and their work as Old Gods of Asgard. Their newer more... pop like songs don't do it for me. Still sounds amazing though. Which I think is a testament to their skill. I don't like pop, but I'd listen to PotF (even if I wish they go back to a more edgier somewhat harder sound).
POTF makes pretty much all music for Remedy games(Max Payne, Alan Wake, Control. etc. etc. etc.), so they have some pretty good contacts when it comes to making videos. 😄
This band has a metal song Control, under their alternative band name Old Gods of Asgard. The band is a fictional band that exists within the universe of a series of video games. A bit of an Ozzy vibe, as the fictional band was formed in the 70s but come out of retirement and start making new music. Control is the newest song, and I enjoy it a lot.
I'd recommend the "Alexander Theatre Sessions " version of this. It's an acoustic take on their work and you can very clearly hear the strings in that one.
Its not his sort of music. He makes notes in a book on hs lap so he can discuss at the end of the video. We are moving to a combined studio in march so hopefully that will make it easier and no more having to take notes.

They are an independent band, not on a major label, BTW :)

FYI- They are doing a tour this year to mark their 20 years- don't miss them.

That bald guy looked like he suffered from beginning to the end and didn't even saw half of the video
