  • I know, it’s been nothing but shorter videos the past month. I’m cooking something up that’s a little more substantial, and it should see the light of day relatively soon.

I've seen Kino's Journey in 2017 (probably around the time of this video's upload) and i can still hear Kino's voice vividly.

I would disagree with the presentation argument. I mean, sure, the animation is limited, no doubt in there, but i do think Kino's Journey has a good sense of self. I mean in the sense that nothing in the visuals feels generic, or even that much "anime-like". It may not have the best animation, but it does have a unique and identifiable aestetic, from the designs to the colour palet, and even the "tv effect" of the straps all over the video. If you see a screenshot of this anime you will know it's from there, and not anywhere else (which is more than i can say for a LOT of anime)
Also, that's why i don't think the new anime will LOOK as good as the first one. It sure will have better animation, but from the trailer the aestectic just feels... normal. Not bad by any means, but also not particulally remarkable.

Yeah I agree with you Nakamura did an amazing job in my opinion regarding the visuals in general at the time and with how it enhances the themes of the show. Personally it really drew my attention in with each episode

I always love how well edited your reviews are! I suggest reviewing Darker than Black. (At least the first season) it is currently once again available for legal streaming (though just the dub I think) on Amazon's Anime Strike.

    Great video! You're very talented,
For the point about the contrast between the presentation of the show to seem like a children's show at first with a somewhat juvenile animation style and the dark subject matter in the narrative (genocide, cannibalism, society), I thought it more like the show being a contemporary Aesop's fable anthology with simplistically drawn characters and scenarios (The Lion and the Mouse, etc) used to illustrate more complex ideas regarding morality, greed, group-think etc.
Also I agree with you about the vocal performances and how slightly underwhelming they were at sculpting a character through voice acting. Ginko is a great example to compare with because although both Ginko and Kino have softer, more low-key vocal performances compared to most other anime, I feel the texture and mannerisms more of Ginko's character and how he has this, world-weariness underlying his voice. That this character has seen some disturbing shit, and has been let down by the stupidity of humans before (although that might just be my interpretation). Compared to Kino who does seem a bit flatter with her performance. Despite that still got much love for Kino

As far as the audience goes, I got the impression that this was intended for early high schoolers or perhaps middle schoolers with liberal parents. I think the concepts are simple, but that age is about the right time when a small group of high schoolers get interested in alternative cultures and the ramifications of these kinds of ideas. In highschool, I was watching Gantz and Ghost in the Shell. However, I still felt like an immature child at the time. I watched this show at the ripe age of 31 though, and I wish I saw it long ago, because I already thought through most of these ideas. I could even tell you some of the original sources for some of these ideas too.

Good review I disagree with you about the artwork. I thought it was very good, but to each his own. Also in 2017 Kino's Journey was available for streaming on Anime Network.

You're one of the rarer reviewers with good taste. Give a watch to Serial experiments lain then Texhnolyze if you want something similar but if you need a breather then I highly recommend Ping pong followed by Tekkon kinkreet , Memories and Area 88 (OVA version)

I watched the first episode of it... while the concept the epiosde explored was interesting, the presentation was not really "engaging" for me, mainly because Kino and Hermes are really distant characters. I can see why so many like the show but it is not really "my thing". I'll give the new Kino anime a watch and see if it might work better for me

You talked bad about the art style, so I have to give you a dislike. Sorry.

Well it's his opinion. I disagree neither but he just say what he thought. And yeah
I prefer old Kino's artstyle. The new artstyle is good but naw It's quite plain cause that's the really common art. I can't remember it even the whole month.
