Just knew that the director is the same as Death Note, SAO, & AOT, if the director can make those anime rise up, i can see that HOTD could be on top of the top 10,but sadly the author Daisuke Sato has passed, and the cofounder don't want to continue it because he said "only Daisuke can write, if I write it it will be the same as spitting on his grave"
I never understood why the anime community has such a disgust with sexual content. I mean if American tv shows can have stuff like game of thrones or all of those other shows with sex scenes and nudity without any complain, then why does anime have to get the hate for it when it has the same content that people don’t complain about in other media? I never understood that, and sometimes I feel like I am the only one that never gets annoyed by fanservice on an anime or a tv show.
NiceGuy Productions Awesome, thanks for agreeing with me. You are the first person I seen in this community that understands my point and agreed with it.
Takumi Doutou true, but I think the issue is that the US does have kind of a similar issue with women and men, David Cage and most furry fan art being a good example of such. And while it isn’t put into shows as much as it is in Japan when it’s there, it’s just as bad if not worse than Japan. Yet we Americans are hypocritical enough to state Japan has such a problem yet acting like we don’t have any such issues
I remember watching and reading this towards the end of junior high and, I'm gonna lie, I was so invested in the world and plot that only while later showing this anime to a friend of mine I noticed that it was full of fanservice. Like, how could I be so blind?
This was my first anime, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. It helped me discover a whole new medium I would have never imagined getting so invested into! That was back in 2012, and here I am still into anime.
@Jeremy Grandison technically same, but I don't count it simply because I wasn't aware it was "anime" in the sense that I just saw it as any other American cartoon lol
A show like this could have been really good without the fanservice. Just discovered your channel awhile ago. It's rare to see a reviewer i agree with, on so many series. All of the videos i've watched are pretty spot on! Since it looks like you take requests, i'll just dump them here if you're interrested: Berserk 90's version and movie trilogy, Monster, Gantz, Rainbow, Zegapain, D.Gray-Man.
People have legitimate reasons for liking HotD, but those don't convince me that it's good -- just that it's not terrible. Tonal disparity/identity crisis aside, there are other issues such as slow pacing, (arguably) unsatisfying ending & an abundance of plot conveniences that drag down the whole experience. Such a shame. Yet another well-made disappointment like Higashi no Eden or Zankyou no Terror.
Hmm. This is one of the most interesting takes on Highschool Of The Dead I’ve seen. While I personally found both tones to be effective, perhaps because they weren’t exactly going on at the same time for the most part and just occurring subsequent to each other, not to mention that the show completely commits to selling both tones wholesale when they are included. It honestly resulted in one of the most engaging anime experiences I had at the time of watching it. And when the fanservice and the gore did collide, the fanservice usually didn't even distract me that much from the serious scenes they were in. In episode 1, when the girl is getting eaten by zombies, the panty shot barely phased my investment in the scene, because rather than being shoved into the camera it just happened to be part of the frame. In contrast to Rei’s panties literally being shoved into the focus of a frame, the girl’s panties are merely a part of the shot which comparatively I’d say feels more naturally integrated, and thus, I didn’t register it as particularly sexual. Matter of fact, for an example of tone’s merging and clashing with each other, I’d consider, well... Rei’s panties being shoved into the frame to be more of the culprit of criticism. That said, like you said, it’s messy, and Highschool Of The Dead’s handling of its fanservice can be rather inconsistent. The show dawns its ecchi a bit too recklessly at points. Though, more often than not I find it to be effective at being fun and sexy, with episode 6 and the OVA special being obvious standouts, but it also can serve different purposes than simply titillation which I will bring up later. More importantly than that, firstly, I’d like to refute the statement that Highschool Of The Dead is morally abhorrent for its depictions of graphic violence alongside sexual imagery. It’s pretty clear that this show is not trying to make a statement on this type violence being sexy in real life. It is meant to be viewed as a fictional story for the entertainment of its viewers, and it’s themes of human psychology as affected when facing the apocalypse are completely detached from any sort of moral advocation for violence. Yes, it’s obviously okay to be disgusted by the visceral imagery the show implements, but that is not a reason to accuse a show of trying to normalize the imagery that it depicts or is trying to directly disrespect people. It makes its intentions with its fanservice pretty clear as being just for fun, as that’s how it’s presented in the majority of its scenes. When it isn’t presented as lightly as typical for the show, like when the female faculty member’s shirt slightly reveals her bra when it’s grabbed by a zombie or when a bit of Rei’s bra is shown when she is being sexually assaulted at the gas station, it is utilized to sell the more raw, dire nature of these scenes. They both are used to establish the disorder and lack of agency of the characters to raise the tension of their respective scenes. Then, of course, those who took away their agency, a random zombie and some psycho hanging around the gas station respectively, are blatantly framed and depicted as evil and/or brutally murdered. To go even further, the main villain of the show, the comically over-the-top teacher character, Mr. Shido, who represents the ultimate symbol of abuse of authority, fittingly (If anticlimactically) quelled by Takagi’s father, the primary symbol of positive authority in the series, is depicted as an evil, manipulative (implied) rapist near the end of one of the episodes. We are given shots of several schoolgirls in sexual positions in this scene, but this is clearly to convey the extent of their dependence on and complete allegiance to Shido. With all this said, I find the accusation of Highschool Of The Dead’s abundance of sexuality in more graphic scenes being morally reprehensible to be asinine, and more of a symptom of people’s personal sensibilities towards this intense imagery creating an immediate negative reaction. This reaction is, again, completely fine, but it simply crosses the line when you attack the show’s moral integrity because of that reaction. I could also go into depth about how I’d personally give the characterization and the theming more credit than you highlighted in this video, but I’ve said what was particularly important to get off my chest. Other than that, you presented the most in-depth analysis of this show’s visual presentation of anyone I’ve seen on UA-cam, so definite props for that. If you have your own rebuttals to my points here, then I’d be happy to discuss in a chain of replies, since the discussion around this show’s fanservice from what I’ve seen has been quite turbulent. I’d like to hone my understanding of this show’s strengths and failings, as I am a big fan of the series who wants to be able to argue the show’s merits thoroughly and as accurately as possible (while addressing its common criticisms and which ones I myself agree with).
Good video that made many fair points. I think Jojo Part 1-3 is a better example of a show that has a campy action style with horror elements in it because is "overtly cartoony" (as you put it) most of the time And if you want an anime that is obviously inspired on western pop culture and action movies like HotD that takes itself a bit more serious I would highly recommend Black Lagoon. It is campy and a bit edgy at points but over all more down to earth and serious... btw. Grex, have you seen Black Lagoon ? If not, any interest in doing so ?
I saw it a while ago, and thought it was solid. Saw Roberta’s Blood Trail more recently, and really enjoyed it, so I think I’d have an even better time if and when I revisit the main series.
Very good video, I enjoyed HoTD, but I also did not find much to it in the end. Its like a weird mix of Tenjou Tenge meet Gakkou Gurashi. I don't know if you have ever seen or heard of Kotoura-san, but I think its an excellent example of mood whipslash and wasted potential. Just give it a quick look. The first 15 minutes will give you an idea what I mean.
You said "fun" a lot but the erotic scenes are erotic scenes not necessarily fun scenes, i think the creators made what they like to the anime and thats fucking good, actually, I'm tired of "deep" boring animes/movies that follow the same structure over and over.
I'll say that the exact same juxtaposition that you don't like it why I liked it, the contrast of "fuck yeah we're the main protagonists so we get to be badasses! woooo!!" againts "the world is going to shit and nothing can stop it", I loved that
Overall, I still like Highschool of the Dead but it suffers from the excessive and inappropriate use of fanservice as well as unnecessary character dramas that are mixed in. Calling it a mess isn't very far from the truth. It is a show that is enjoyable to watch and probably the closest thing I have seen to a zombie apocalypse anime but it was far too ambitious and tried to be too many things all at once. And I guess the final nail in the coffin is that it is incomplete. That sucks. ^_^
To the creator of this video I offered the following suggestion. If the contents Within did not please you 100% all you need do is create your own to match your very specific Style
i always thought of this show not being for me, and this video solidifies my viewpoint, it can have nice production values and a nice score, but if it's littered with nudity, i'd rather watch porn instead of anime. also congrats for 5k+ subs, so can we expect some sort of special for that soon? let the 10k see the light of day

I think that the High School of the Dead manga should get sort of a The Wheel of Time treatment, in that sense the original author had past away before the series got to finished maybe another author who was close with him can continue the manga.
Chad Tidlund, well maybe it is possible but the co creator of HOTD Shoji Sato stated that "I am not going to write Highschool Of The Dead, because Daisuke Sato (the author) is the only one that can do it, if I write it I know he will let me but for me writing it is the same as spitting on his grave" so.. Maybe there will be but the chances are close to none

It's a good character driven anime, and I say that unironically. Although it has a lot of fanservice, there is still depth that is often overlooked. Takashi is a selfish, self absorbed person, who is unhappy with his life because his girlfriend dumped him. Over the course of the show, he begins to think of the larger picture, and begins to care about his friends. Rei, has a happy life, before the epidemic, and when she loses it, she can't help but want to go back, and her journey is about accepting the situation (Manga). Saeko reflects that same journey, denying her nature, and with the help of takashi, learns to accept herself. Saya learns to take responsibility and stop relying on adults. Kohta finally feels useful and learns to fight for his happiness. Even Shizuka, who is often seen as useless, does what ever she can to lighten the situation. When there is no way she can help the student at episode one, I feel she behaves in that ditzy manner, because she is trying to make the kid feel better about his death. A male, japanese, student whose about to die would be comforted by, a moe, sexy, nurse flaunting her body. With the girls later on, she invites them to drink; and in that same episode, she flirts with the boys, all in the attempt to relieve their tension and stress. She likes comforting people, probably why she became a nurse in the first place. She has no significant character arc because she already knows what she wants.
The only other thing I can think of that even comes close to this is ZNation but it's an American live-action series, the first two seasons take on a light hearted and sometimes darkly humorous tone.
If you mean people attacked by deadly creatures, try out: Attack on Titan, Gantz, Shiki, Parasyte The Maxim, Claymore, Terra Formars. If you read manga, try these: Berserk, Eden no Ori, Green Worldz, Variante, I Am A Hero.
I never understood why so many people like to pretend this is a good anime, hell why it even deserved to be an anime in the first place at all. We live in a world where amazing "zombie" related manga like Sprite and I am a Hero exisit and THIS is the one that gets animated and people actually like it? *Sigh* this community dude.
n543576 Lamenting the fact that people like a show you don’t care for is weird and kind of sad. And nobodies “pretending” to like anything. It’s just a great show.
@@Wallie33. okayyy but it's the fact that it's only the girls that are used as a token for unnecesary fanservice. not to mention that a lot of them are highschoolers🤨it's just a cheap sale tactic which does work a lot of the time tbh but it's just overused
I hate the fact that this show will never be finish. The guy who made the manga and story died and now it will be forever incomplete.
This is such a case where having an anime original ending would have been an interesting idea
I wish it had a season 2 with the footnotes from the creator. At least give it closure.
If I recall correctly, Kuroko did something like this with the movie since the manga apparently had a really unsatisfying ending
Let's agree to disagree. I believe this show is very underrated for a bunch of reasons
Like that it will never end.
How lmao it’s confusing af the animation is bad it’s confusing
I remember watching this in high school and losing my mind during the boob matrix, legit never seen something so absurd done before lol

Angelo Diaz while I do still see fanservise in all series as an unnecessary and cheap marketing tactic, I do agree with you overall

Angelo Diaz honestly when they are grown women sure but the obsession with underage girls is kinda weird

idk why anime are frequently this tonedeaf but in my nihilistic brain i somehow come to accept and even on some level embrace it.

My favorite anime is one piece and jojo

I agree as well, it could have been greater without the fanservice... the fanservice made me cringe every time and shake my head.
Highschool of the dead is one of my favorites

How about a review of Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou ( The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior)? Keep up the good work, man!

I never thought you would have reviewed this lol.

Underrated show
Ok lets just say the first half of the anime up to like episode 5 or 6 was really good
The rest wasn't AS GOOD but some parts were still decent
Nice review!
Unfortunate to see you are gone.
The point you make here begs so hard for a follow-up regarding Seikon no Qwaser that it hurts.

Not... exactly. You'll be the first to know before I make a formal video announcement, but I'm likely going on something of a hiatus, indefinitely.
fair enough, feel free to take a break when needed
aaand as i say that this show has oddly gathered my attention just for being pure silliness, as long as i can overlook the boobs and asses
How come you don't have more viewers and subs?
Highschool of the dead has to much fan service, it is distracting my enjoyment of violence and gore.
It’s my first anime I watch years ago I want to make my own story and be inspired by the high school of the dead I want to make a story art style called the middle school of the dead
