Some years ago in a writers strike, Conan literally proved to be the goat of talkshow hosts. he even payed for the writers out of his own pocket during the strike.
@@nolanholmberg311 John Oliver is cool. He has the kind of energy no one can replicate without copious amounts of drugs, and I love it. Did some pretty good work on Community as well.

As an actor, training at the National academy, I can say whole heartedly that a piece lives and dies on the writing. A bad actor can pull off great writing, a great actor can’t sell bad writing. Respect to the writers out there.
Writers ruined every single show. They do not deserve anything. Streaming services are losing so much money cause of really bad shows (due to awful writing) and the writers want more money? What a joke. Hard dislike on this video.
@@barilengmarapyane2499Mark Wahlberg in The Happening its like the most mocked line in the movie since he's a good actor who did a shit job in that movie
It didn't help James that his predecessor, Craig Ferguson, was one of if not the best Late Night show host of all time, at least for me he was. He was one of the ONLY Late Night show hosts that did it all basically himself. No fake laughs, no cue cards, no nothing. He made a joke and if It landed it landed and if flopped he still found a way to bring it back around. It was all him. Late Night died when Craig Ferguson left for me.
The hand of a good writer is invisible. Good writing flows into the story naturally. This makes stories far more immersive, but with the cost of writers not receiving as much credit as on-screen jobs like actors. People only notice writers when either immersion is broken or they are watching the show specifically to dissect it's writing and see why it works. Immersion is very often broken by bad writing, whether it be a particularly annoying cliche, out of character moments, an offensive narrative, 1 episode being a rehash of another, etc.
i always believe writers were the most important part of a story, because they can throw as much money as you want at the visuals and actors. but without a good writer you get marvel’s “Eternals”
Man, I'm old enough to remember the other writers strike back in the late 2000s. Even back then, it showed just how indispensable writers are to the industry. Without them, you'd just have a bunch of actors standing around with nothing to say.
My mom liked his carpool karaoke segments a lot, and when I told her that he wasn't actually driving the car and they were on a hitched trailer, I could see the color and enthusiasm fade from her face. I felt so bad, almost like I was telling a child Santa Claus wasn't actually real. I stripped joy out of the life of someone I cared about so very, very dearly. James Corden is a jerk I guess but I feel like a bigger one
Dammm. James Gorden sucks. How dare he lie to viewers like that. Now don't tell your mom he and the guests weren't actually singing. It's lip singing. That would have been too harsh.
She was going to find out someday I’m sure it was better she find out from someone she loves. I hope she recovers mentally from learning something as serious as this.
I mean is it surprising? He could not interact near as much if he was focused on driving and just unsafe in general. Still, tricking the viewers is not cool... I get it.
As an aspiring screenwriter, this terrifies me. Writers make films have substance. And that substance can't be made using flashy CGI or cheesy dialogue.
I miss Conan O’Brian late night cuz he paid his staff out of pocket during his time off tv and the 07 WGA writers strike, Conan was the last true late night host/comedian and writer.
Conan O'Brien was my favourite of all the late show hosts and "Conan Without Borders" was one of my favourite segments because it proved he was able to be funny, charming and had this magnetic energy to him that allowed him to build connections with literally anyone anywhere, even during hard times.
Conan is still amazing. I occasionally drop in to check out his podcast, especially if he has a guest I like, and let me tell you, that even with him just at a desk, without a crazy production and without a studio audience, him and his crew are absolutely hilarious
Lemme tell you a funny story. So I’m an animation student and recently our school got a visit by one of the Big Mouth writers where he got to talk about the state of the animation industry right now due to the writers strike and what we as students should take into account when applying for industry jobs. Now all of us were initially dreading this lecture because… come on, it’s Big Mouth. But what was surprising to us and later just fucking hilarious was that he lectured us about how streaming services right now were being downright vile to their staff in terms of pay. He sited that Netflix was so fucking bad, that they were only willing to pay the writers more money if they didn’t unionize. Throughout the lecture, he gave us an entire “fuck Netflix” speech and at the end of it said that since he doesn’t work on the show anymore, he’s been the happiest he’s ever been and that he was glad the show got canceled. Really nice guy tbh.
Good for him. I hope the dude gets a competent writing job once this whole strike ends, and I'm glad for him that he doesn't have to work on big mouth anymore.
Im a 3D animation student and one of the main teacher worked in a animated movie about one of the chilean charecters we have, is one of the worst movies our country has made, yet he is amazing at writing, he show us some scrips that were never aproved for not being comercial or had been on stand by for a long time, bad shows are not 100% writers fault, sometimes the ones that pay for the proyect ruin the original plan
"Rub some dirt in it, get over it." Truest line of this entire age. God forbid anyone ever complain about anything even if it's valid. I'm so glad society is breaking away from that kind of mindset, even if it is a chaotic world out there now.
It's because idiots are in charge and think that writing a script for something isn't as important or valuable as the rest of the production. Honestly we as a society need to rise up, get the idiots out of their comfy chairs, and force them to do the jobs they are WOEFULLY underpaying for and see if they think they should get more respect then their underlings.
Then maybe writers should start writing better, stop putting their personal ideologies into their work in ham-fisted ways, and actually earn the pay they demand.
The best thing I've seen about the current writers' strike was the actor Thomas Ellis with a banner "I'm an actor, I LITERALLY don't know what to say".
All late night shows go off of a script, yet he was somehow the only one able to manage to sound even more fake than anyone else. He always gave me two-faced kind of vibes. Lots of backhanded comments and just an overall weird vibe. This suspicion only grew once rumors started surfacing on Reddit.. Always trust your gut instinct lol So happy for you, Charlie!
Bro it’s not even rumors, it’s straight up been long confirmed for literally almost his entire career since his initial blow up that he was a absolute fucking dickhead
I was mad Conan ended his show before he did. Reminder that Conan knew most of his staff by name, but Corden couldn’t name ONE person on his spill your guts show
Conan O‘Brien is a genius when it comes to comedy, literally worked as a writer for commedians in his younger years. Not faced by the current writer striker, but when the writer strike a few years ago hit some of those late night „comedians“, Conan actually created the most entertaining and fun to watch content he‘s ever done, since he actually did it himself
It's sad that a lot people forget that Conan was a talk show host. When they hear talk show host, it's always Kimmel, Fallon, Myers, Noah, Oliver, and many more who uses their platform for politics. Gone are the days when jokes are thrown against everybody and nobody gets triggered. I used to watch Kimmel back when he was actually funny. Now he's basically a Ben Shapiro type political commentator who tries to be funny.
I don’t really think John Oliver uses his platform for politics tbh, he tries to steer clear of Trump and Biden and from what I can remember only has like 4 or 5 episodes about either
On top of that, he handled the corona shutdown much more seamlessly than any other talk show. He stayed funny and entertaining while addressing the studio struggles
@@acreditar-belive2950 Bro.... what?.... Look, I love Last Week Tonight and I'm mostly in line w/ Oliver's politics; but I would never try to hide him using his platform for pushing for changes. I think what you are interpreting politics to be opinions about politicians themselves (and maybe even just the big politicians). That's not what the word means. He brings up a lot of serious issues and gives possible solutions consisting of political changes and/or cultural/etc. I don't think that's bad at all. And if you watch him, then that's what you're looking for. Conan also has made some political stances, but just the easy/typical ones from what I recall. Being political has nothing to do with ability to write one's own jokes. Which is what makes him special.
You are so damn lucky! He's on his way back here to the UK ... where we don't want him! His management/P.R. team have been all over the media, trying to tell us how he's wonderful, that he loves the people he interviews, that he's 'coming home' to popular AMERICAN acclaim! Waiting for his return ... and going down in a ball of flames!
The problem right now with the Writer’s Strike is that - despite the explosion in streaming content - nothing in streaming is actually making money. Not a single streaming service has been long term profitable. Netflix only was making profit when no other service existed, and they weren’t spending billions upon billions of dollars on ‘original content’. It’s a service that requires constant technical updates across devices and operating system platforms, streaming rights costs is becoming more and more expensive long term, and most streaming services don’t rely nearly as much on advertising revenue compared to traditional TV. So all of Netflix’s profits are now gone, and other studios services aren’t making much to begin with. Disney even admitted they made more money selling streaming rights than hording their content on Disney +. Writers are important, but frankly they’re asking for money that may not exist. You think HBO Max is removing shows and movies they themselves made and produced for no reason…?
I don’t think Americans know how sad it is for Brits. James Corden played one of the most loved characters, ‘Smithy’. Watching him show his true colours was painful to say the least
The number 1 thing I look for in a movie or show is good writing. I just had the pleasure of watching Faster and Snitch. Both were very well written films that took Dwayne Johnson out of his comfort zone and managed to pull performances out of him that I wish he’d do more of, because watching him play very flawed men was a great treat.
@Ken North Have you considered that these failures are more to blame on the Multi-millionaire executives, for not giving their writers better pay/more time.
@@aSPEDmf Increasing someone's pay won't increase their writing talent, lets get that straight first. Giving them more time might be an improvement, but no amount of time can turn a bad, bland, boring idea into a good idea. Writer failures fall square on the writers. Hopefully the strike fails, and their jobs get culled a bit. Maybe that way, some of the bad talent will be shed.
"We are the foundation of the entertainment industry! We are responsible for the quality of everything, from Rings of Power and Witcher Blood Origins over Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon to SNL and Big Mouth! If we don't get paid more, we will not bring you any more of it!" This is indeed a very convincing pitch. If you are pushing for a law that limits their pay at minimum wage, that is.
Conan O'Brien's Late Night shows during the past writers strike 15 years ago were amazing. He was able to run quite entertaining shows without written scripts while being humble and giving all credits to his striking writers and working staffs. Same thing went to Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show, which arguably is one of the greatest late night talk shows of all time for good reasons.
I'm so glad you mentioned limitless. I loved that show but it sucks that it got canned so quickly. I worry they may have pulled out way to far. but it was a fun show and I feel though could have done alot more.
@@GLUFSAREN I promise that sludge is just because that’s the only thing networks will green light even the writers of the shows will tell u how much they have to abide by network unless they’re a huge name in writing which most of these protestors aren’t
the writers are literally the backbone of the industry. it doesn't matter how great of a cast you have, how amazing your director is, how incredible the crew are, if your script is trash, your production is gonna be trash. there's only so much talent can do to make up for garbage source material and i really hope this strike gets people to appreciate writers more on top of the writers getting their proper compensation
@@irissupercoolsy That's not a good example since people watch Riverdale for the bad writing. It's the morbid curiosity to know what else they'll try and how they'll end it.
@@SomeCanine Maybe but those writers have worked on good things even if the current show is bad. You have to keep in mind the out of touch boomers that have to approve and try to direct the shows. So the show is never entirely the writer's visions.
I think as media consumers we should tell production companies of our favorite show that we care about the writing team, we want to watch shows with a creative team that want to create a story that can either keep going as long as there's cash flow and is still enjoyable to watch without the plot being lost, or creative teams that want to be able to tell a story start to finish.
I remember the last writers strike, so many shows ended up ending pretty poorly around that time.. A tad surprised they didn't learn to keep the writers happy..
Anybody who says writers aren’t important to shows needs to remember that what made shows like breaking bad and the boys so great is how impactful the writing is, it’s what enables the actors to reach their full potential without sounding clunky or weird.
@@phoebejl I’m not saying all writers are phenomenal. But don’t you think that the lack of fair pay rates for movies that are going to streaming anyway or just streaming shows could have something to do with the lack of talent in major scripts recently? If people aren’t going to be paid the same rate they used to be because the studio intends on releasing it to streaming quicker, then a lot of the talented writers or writers as a whole aren’t going to be incentivized to put a lot of time into the quality of scripts
Yea but these writers weren't. It's all the over political left wing shows that seem to be affected. Hard to have much compassion for them when you realize their job is to spread propaganda in the form of "comedy".
I still have no idea how in the world Corden became so famous. However, I don't know why so many dweebs are so very famous. EDIT: I honestly can't believe people think writers should not be paid correctly for their contributions to our favorite shows. It is way easier to replace an actor than it is to write great material.
I don't understand why they should get residuals at all. Why not, like every other job on earth, do they not just get paid for the service they provide. Insert cash, receive script. I don't get residuals on the software I write, why should they get residuals for the shows they write? This all seems ridiculous to me.
In theory it's for the same reason that startup employees are paid in stock. In practice it's the paradigm that exists, so it's hard for writers to demand a different payment scheme
As someone from the UK, all I can say is, I am sorry you had to suffer this long. How this happened is beyond logic and reason, I hope you can take my words and find some closure to this difficult time.
I don't know how it happened for so long but I know how it happened to start with...Craig Ferguson was from Scotland so the powers that be just looked for another person from the UK when he retired thinking that was what made The Late Late Show great. What a mistake on their part! Craig (& Geoff [Josh Thompson]) made that show great, not where he came from.
I agree that writers are the lifeblood of good content, but to be honest there is a lot of modern content that probably wont see a difference between what's already been made and what will be made without writers. Best case scenario for some shows is that there will be no differences in the quality of writing and the worst case scenario is that a bad show gets worse.
I remember the writers strikes from the early 2010s and believe me, you could tell the difference between the shows that had been written by professionals and the ones that had been put together by scabs or desperate producers. Even if you go back now and watch a show like How I Met Your Mother, it's really easy to tell which season happened during the strikes because the plot goes off the rails and the jokes fall completely flat.
Casino Royale was one of the strongest entries in the Bond franchise, and Quantum of Solace had to screw that up a few years later because of the writer's strike. On the other hand, we got the shiniest turd from the 2000s writing strike in the form of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Because unfortunately CBS did not want James' show to be like Craig Ferguson's masterpieces, and when Craig left I think we all knew that late night was just never gonna be the same
Because Craig is too damn real. Holywood dislike that. They want to control the narrative. I think it started when Craig proclaimed that he's not going to talk about Britney Spears situation (when she was bald and having mental health problems) because he felt like he's kicking someone that's already down. Mainstream media hated that because they can't make money over Britney's suffering
The problem was the late late show with Craig Ferguson was actually an awesome show with hillarious improv, and a genuine comedian as the host. Once letterman left, because he owned both times lots, craigs show went with him. They beleived it was the time slot that was so valuable, so they invested alot into the show they replaced it with. Also since NBC didn't own the timeslot they refused to advertise Craig's show. despite the lack of budget, it is still my all time favorite late night show
On the note of late night shows taking a step back, does anyone remember the previous writers' strike, when Conan, as a writer, actually managed to keep the show going himself?
Quantum of Solace was severely hampered by the writer's strike too (although based on Michael Bay's other Transformers movies, I think Revenge of the Fallen would still be terrible to some extent).
I have a web novel that I've been working on for almost 8 months now. I first I thought "it can't be that hard" and bow was I sadly mistaken. I now have deep restpect for people that wright for a living now.
We recently had a james corden-esque kind of guy removed from the workplace after him being given so many chances, and already the atmosphere is lighter and people are more relaxed again.
The writers strike 10 years ago single handedly sent Heroes into the GROUND. The amount of buzz and hype and cultural impact that show had, crashing to a halt after trying to make the show work without their writers. The seasons that happened because of that were retconned in the highest degree, to the point that the writers for later seasons said "just pretend that season didn't happen" because not a SINGLE plot point was able to work.
I've noticed that writing is also now more important than ever for superhero movies, too. If Marvel and DC want to keep making their movies and shows, they seriously have to step up their writing, because the novelty of just going to see your favorite comic book characters on-screen has worn off for the majority of audiences.
I think that major productions like that having such lackluster or even just downright dogshit writing is why a lot of these bad takes about writers not deserving fair compensation exist. All these big movies and shows writers have been just phoning it it banking on people being so stupid that they'll just buy the shit anyway, meanwhile there's a multitude of writers out there actually working hard and trying to make the best thing possible that just get shit on nonstop by the industry, and now by the public because of how lazy the more visible ones have been. Like if you asked me should the writers of the last couple mcu movies get paid more my answer would be a huge fuck no cause their stuff was terrible. If anything pay those morons less. But then there's all the writers who actually do good work who are getting paid in used bags of airplane peanuts in comparison who definitely deserve more.
Writers right now are striking with the goal in mind to KEEP the low-level of writing. Look: If the strike succeeds - the writers get their pay, they're all happy, they keep churning out the same slosh they have been for the past half-decade+. If the strike fails - amazing! This means some of them will have to quit the job, or will be fired - either way, the field will be culled, which means (hopefully) that only the more talented writers remain, thus improving the quality of writing.
I think part of the problem with the public's perception of writers is that we have so strongly pushed the idea that the director is the author of a movie. The director is super important, right, and they can influence what script gets into the final cut, but it isn't their primary job to write the script. I would love in the future to see movie trailers that say something like "from writer x and director y"
people who watch korean dramas tend to keep track of the writers of the shows they are watching and even expect newer shows from their favourite writers. Recently a netflix produced korean drama "alchemy of the souls" had the whole fandom praying to gods for a happy ending because the writers ,who are sister duo, are infamous for writing heart wrenching sad endings.
I support that idea. I volunteer in local theater and sometimes different ones do local story contests for an original ten minute play and whenever I've been asked to direct or taken directorial classes as a summer camp when I was younger a question that we we're given or we should ask ourselves is "What is the writer trying to say?" And "How will you be able to present the ideas and story to the audience effectively?" And I think that is something that the paid creatives forget.
The director is the director. It's the writers, editors, actors, set designers, ect who do most of the work. But the director gets all the credit because he told people what he wanted done.
I recently had a theatre director talk in my class and he openly acknowledged that the directors don’t do shit. Directors had a specific vision in mind for the story and it’s their job to communicate it with the customer department, writers, actors, lighting/sound/camera crew, etc. They’re only there to make sure everything is cohesive. That’s all.
I went through a phase where I watched every type of "late night show", but even then I never watched his. Now, I only watch Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Talk show hosts never wrote much of their own material. Even the legendary Johnny Carson relied on writers for his monologue and skits. His talent was, of course, in his delivery of the material and his ability to connect with audiences and his guests.
The studios love playing off the stars against the production workers, when in reality every show is a team effort. Remove any single element (writing, directing, makeup, etc) and the whole thing falls apart. I hope the striking writers get their fair share, because that will open it up to other departments getting their own
It's amazing how writers are so underestimated while also being the cited reason as to why a show fails or succeeds. A bunch of shows from the mid 2000's are cited to have the worst material around 2008, another writer's strike, having some of the shows pulled down from being super profitable. That should be evidence enough of how important a writer's work is for the entertainment industry.
Underestimated? I would say Overestimated. These are the writers that took IP like Lord of the Rings and turned it into the complete mockery that is Rings of Power. These are the writers that produce shit like Velma, Star Trek Picard Season 1 and 2, and Star Trek Discovery. These are the writers that spew out Disney Star Wars and Disney Marvel Movies and shows. These are the writers that believe it's more important to inject their political beliefs into everything rather than learn and respect the property they are working on. *Good* writers are important to the industry, but most of these writers are neither good nor important; the industry has been losing money for years because of them. This opportunity should be taken to get rid of these bad writers, which unfortunately is probably most of them.
I remember when the writers strike happened years ago. Breaking bad was in-between season 1 and 2. And the original plan was to kill off Jesse as character development for Walt. But since the writers went on strike they had time to do focus group testing and EVERYONE loved Jesse so much they decided not to kill him. So if the writers never went on strike breaking bad would have been very different.
@@teatea1115 yeah cus he died pretty earlier on! and they were going to do the scene of michonne in the comics of the governor doing terrible inhumane things to her, but writers went on strike to not add that in as they felt uncomfortable and disgusted and just wanted to leave that scene in the comics and comics only
Its not only the writers i remember rappers redman and method man who made the movie How high. They said something like in thr music industry u can feel it coming up. But the movie industry they make u feel great and last moment they steal everything from u
The best thing about this strike is not just that a lot of fucking awful shows are unable to continue at present, but that it's finally. Fucking. Unified. Last time the writers tried this in 2017, some of the organizations like the Director's Guild were scabbing hard. But this year literally everyone is unified in their quest for proper pay and keeping fucking AI out of the writer's room. It's brilliant.
Yeah I really feel like this one is more about AI than it is actual pay, because only a threat that dire would be bringing everyone from all corners of the industry together. Like pay is what sparked the strike, sure, but they probably figured that they'd better go ahead while they have leverage and get something down on paper in a CBA about not allowing AI to take over their work. If they'd waited any longer and allowed the production companies to start to bring in AI and get its foot in the door, it would have been too late. And I know that I for one don't want to watch shows written by AI, I don't care how good or funny they might be. Smart move on their part 👍
I remember the writers strike of the late of 2007-08. It tanked some promising shows, because everyone lost interest and the shows became aimless. Heroes was a big one that had been promoted so much, had a good first, mmm, two seasons, then went off the rails. Pushing Daisies, which had the bad fortune of premiering in 2007, was wonderfully charming and weird and it just couldn’t get the viewers and folded in 2009. It was a huge hit with critics and did get to live on in other forms. The show was so creative with it’s faced-paced intelligent dialogue and unique plot, plus stunning visual style, it was still lamented over years later. Writers deserve soooo much credit. It’s their minds who create the gripping shows we watch. We’ve been through this, I thought the industry learned. They shouldn’t have to be striking again so soon. The networks should be already working feverishly on getting the writers what they deserve. To come to a strike is a HUGE step. And signals real trouble for the industry. I’m so disappointed.
The writing department has been absolute shit across the board though. Movies, TV series, late-night shows. This strike is aimed to KEEP the terrible level of writing, by keeping the same worthless hacks employed, so they can churn out more of the same shit. If anything, it'd be better to NOT have a successful strike - that way, (hopefully) the shit writers will have quit or be let go, and only the talented ones would remain, giving the industry way better quality overall. Coming to a strike is a HUGE step indeed - the death-throws of talentless people, trying to hold on to their paychecks, despite being awful at their jobs.
One of the big points of this strike is to gain an incentive for success model. For other forms of media, the writers get paid more if the show succeeds. This is part of why I think streaming shows suck. Writers aren’t being paid well so they write a plot that is passable and nothing more
I am sure that is part of it but there is also a lot of blote and I agree with them getting better pay when deserved but one of demands that undermines there position is demanding x amount of writers to be on every show that is dispicible
The only astonishing part about this situation is finding out that Bigmouth had real living people in it's writing team. I thought they had some bootleg AI writing their show.
The writers really are the foundation in which shows are built upon. Shows like Better Call Saul, Succession and many others wouldn’t be that engaging if it weren’t for the writers.
Writers, directors, actors, TV show makeup artists, animators, act. Anyone in these realms of proffesions has no businesses complaining until we adress the income issues of those with necessary jobs.
Something to remember is that after the writers strike in 2008, corporations had to produce shows and ended up promoting smallers writers and producers which gave us the Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, and Regular Show. That was literally just for one channel.
This also affects more people than just the writers. A lot of productions have been held off for the next year in anticipation of this strike, so there’s many people out of a job in the film and VFX industry. This makes it an ideal time for union organization there, I wouldn’t be surprised to see VFX workers start unionizing and striking as this goes on.
Strike while the iron is hot, when amazon managed to unionize at a large warehouse, starbucks workers saw the opportunity & went for it. Collective bargaining by the workers pays off big when everyone does it while it's snowballed
Hell yeah! Because VFX as a fielding the film industry is much much younger compare dto the other fields of film, they weren't around when the first big unionization push in Hollywood happened. VFX artists get treated like dirt when they should be treated much much better. Agitate, Educate, Innoculate, Organize, Unionize.
it’s my favourite show, was heartbroken to hear it’s ending the amount of hate it gets is ridiculous, just don’t watch it if you don’t like it, it brings so much joy and comfort to my life and many others it’s fucking devastating that people are celebrating its end
The fact that big mouth is still a show is insane, It has almost 10 times less the support than Inside Job had, Which was in its first season and had so much potential, especially with younger generations.I hope this makes shows more expensive and forces companies to make some good content
Big mouth is fucking funny as shit man. It's immature as shit but still good for some cheap laughs. I can totally get why it's not for some people, but it's blatantly not true when people say it sucks. Like Velma has no reason to exist, can't say the same for BM. But i still can't believe that inside job got axed so quickly, great setting and characters with actually interesting storylines, a fucking shame indeed.
Craig Ferguson and Josh Thompson (improve guy who voiced Geoff) were the best late night i have ever seen. They went away from usual scripted formula, and relied on their talent instead, and it worked. I miss that show a lot. Wanted to add, that there is a channel called "Jay leno fly" which has great compilations of Craig Ferguson late night show.
If all of this ends up going down, we could officially say it’s the end of an era for late night shows, which at this point in time wouldn’t be a bad thing. It had its time but it wore out its welcome long ago.
@@meloncolli_ Yeah, the original plan was to kill him off in the first season, but he was such a fan-favorite that when the Writer's Strike delayed the second season, they ended up deciding to keep him on the show.
Thank you for talking about the strike! I’m a screenwriter and I’m Pickering with my colleagues this days. Jason sudekis joined us yesterday. For me it’s so terrible that you have the music industry being fair and I don’t get how they cannot figure it for screenwriters. I mean you have Spotify figured out the residuals how can you not figure it out for streaming???? They just don’t care. Ty for supporting! It’s nice to see such a big hunger games actor being so supportive!
Nobody protests for the incredibly low income jobs that literally make or break our country... but we all stand for already middle class jobs that provide nothing buy leisure?
Writers, directors, actors, TV show makeup artists, animators, act. Anyone in these realms of proffesions has no businesses complaining until we adress the income issues of those with necessary jobs.
The music industry is in no way 'fair' lmao. Its fantastic for writers, cause they add two words or three notes to a song and are instantly entitled to like 25-50%. But people who make the actual music (recording engineers, session musicians, mixing and mastering engineers, etc.) they get 0%. It is not a fair industry at all, just extremely biased towards writers getting all the compensation.
@@GrimNephilim That attitude is corpo propaganda. Everyone should be allowed to unionize and demand fair compensation, regardless of what they do. Treating that as a privilege and not a right is exactly what they want. Blue Collar Jobs demanding fair pay strenghtens the postion of other labor movements since it creates precedence.

@@_Obey_Well that’s because most of hollywoods “woke” writers are trash writers.
At least the length matched the title
Man, I'm old enough to remember the other writers strike back in the late 2000s. Even back then, it showed just how indispensable writers are to the industry. Without them, you'd just have a bunch of actors standing around with nothing to say.
And yet people have the audacity to literally go "How dare these people demand to raise their pay ? How dare the labourers go against their bosses !"
Modern writers are trash.

I miss Conan O’Brian late night cuz he paid his staff out of pocket during his time off tv and the 07 WGA writers strike, Conan was the last true late night host/comedian and writer.
You forgot Craig Ferguson.
Conan is hands down best of the best with Craig Ferguson being a close second. They’re both comedic legends.

I was thinking about conan too. His contents during the writer strike were hillarious.

I don't understand why they should get residuals at all. Why not, like every other job on earth, do they not just get paid for the service they provide. Insert cash, receive script.
I don't get residuals on the software I write, why should they get residuals for the shows they write? This all seems ridiculous to me.
In theory it's for the same reason that startup employees are paid in stock. In practice it's the paradigm that exists, so it's hard for writers to demand a different payment scheme
If Hollywood and TV writers were "paid correctly" for their work, they wouldn't be paid at all because they suck at their jobs

I agree that writers are the lifeblood of good content, but to be honest there is a lot of modern content that probably wont see a difference between what's already been made and what will be made without writers. Best case scenario for some shows is that there will be no differences in the quality of writing and the worst case scenario is that a bad show gets worse.
Celebration time come on!

That’s all.
It’s the literal first thing to come up in the credits. Both opening and ending, it’s more about people giving a fuck.
I still can’t believe we live in a timeline where big mouth continued but they cancelled inside job.
Meanwhile Craig Ferguson had to write his own skits and no one talk about him.
@@faizalf119 He had help from a ton of writers idiot no way he wrote it all himself
The studios love playing off the stars against the production workers, when in reality every show is a team effort. Remove any single element (writing, directing, makeup, etc) and the whole thing falls apart.
I hope the striking writers get their fair share, because that will open it up to other departments getting their own
@@faizalf119 That's very true. Ferguson wrote three books and a few movies as well. He might be the most underrated late night host of all time.
If it wasn't for writers Fallon wouldn't have lasted a season.
Yeah maybe you should look at the box office numbers. Agenda pushing doesn't work and its these writers which are doing it. Just look at She Hulk.
I hope marvel and dc lose the most from this we need nongready companies before the end of the superhero era

“Audiences don’t know a writer writes a script. They think the actors make it up as they go along.” -Joe Gillis, Sunset Boulevard
"The people I want to adore me are idiots." -Joe Gillis, Sunset Boulevard. On a related note, who the hell is Joe Gillis?
And? Most writers here in the west have been trash for the past 5+ years 😂
Good actors do. Bill Murray constantly goes off script. Damn near every line in Ghostbusters was improvised.
Tuco was supposed to kill Jesse at the end of season 1
Actually would have been better . I got tired of Jesse crying after the first 2 seasons.
Bro that was like 2 writers strikes ago
Darryl from the walking dead was also supposed to die. Until they found out he was the fan favorite so the kept him alive in season 2
@@teatea1115 yeah cus he died pretty earlier on! and they were going to do the scene of michonne in the comics of the governor doing terrible inhumane things to her, but writers went on strike to not add that in as they felt uncomfortable and disgusted and just wanted to leave that scene in the comics and comics only
There's always other evils in our midst
Its not only the writers i remember rappers redman and method man who made the movie How high. They said something like in thr music industry u can feel it coming up. But the movie industry they make u feel great and last moment they steal everything from u
The best thing about this strike is not just that a lot of fucking awful shows are unable to continue at present, but that it's finally. Fucking. Unified. Last time the writers tried this in 2017, some of the organizations like the Director's Guild were scabbing hard. But this year literally everyone is unified in their quest for proper pay and keeping fucking AI out of the writer's room. It's brilliant.
Fax
No one can stop AI
>keeping ai out of the writers room
Yeah, they want to keep out except when they'll use it to save on time :^)
Yeah I really feel like this one is more about AI than it is actual pay, because only a threat that dire would be bringing everyone from all corners of the industry together.
That writer's strike canceled one of the best shows ever: Drawn Together.
I loved Pushing Daisies, such an underrated show that I feel like pushed over-the-top stylization in TV shows before its time
WAIT HEROES??? I REMEMBER THAT SHOW BEING ON TV, wow, I was only 6 so probably too little to know what a writer strike was
Man, I miss Hiro from Heroes
played the ewok victory music while watching this, really enhanced the experience
On this day we took a W (4 weeks later)
One of the big points of this strike is to gain an incentive for success model. For other forms of media, the writers get paid more if the show succeeds. This is part of why I think streaming shows suck. Writers aren’t being paid well so they write a plot that is passable and nothing more
I am sure that is part of it but there is also a lot of blote and I agree with them getting better pay when deserved but one of demands that undermines there position is demanding x amount of writers to be on every show that is dispicible
Imagine no Sopranos or Breaking Bad, the guys who wrote those episodes and lines are genuinely real talented people
Breaking Bad Season 1 actually got cut short because of the last writer's strike
had no idea this writer’s strike caused so much good
Now hopefully he just says off the air and it's a win
The only astonishing part about this situation is finding out that Bigmouth had real living people in it's writing team. I thought they had some bootleg AI writing their show.
The writers really are the foundation in which shows are built upon. Shows like Better Call Saul, Succession and many others wouldn’t be that engaging if it weren’t for the writers.
Writers, directors, actors, TV show makeup artists, animators, act. Anyone in these realms of proffesions has no businesses complaining until we adress the income issues of those with necessary jobs.
Yes, but have you considered that they get paid? That’s not very maximum profits for the studios…
Something to remember is that after the writers strike in 2008, corporations had to produce shows and ended up promoting smallers writers and producers which gave us the Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, and Regular Show. That was literally just for one channel.
Writers do deserve better pay. Good writers.
Hold the fuck up. Amazon finally unionized?!?@? When??!!
@mikael100100 A lot of them have been trying for about 2 years. Ever heard of the New York Amazon unionization attempt?

The fact that big mouth is still a show is insane, It has almost 10 times less the support than Inside Job had, Which was in its first season and had so much potential, especially with younger generations.I hope this makes shows more expensive and forces companies to make some good content
The second season of inside job was REALLY cooking up the story and makes it’s cancellation that much more painful.
Big mouth is fucking funny as shit man. It's immature as shit but still good for some cheap laughs. I can totally get why it's not for some people, but it's blatantly not true when people say it sucks.

But i still can't believe that inside job got axed so quickly, great setting and characters with actually interesting storylines, a fucking shame indeed.

Me too! Those were the golden times of late night tv
When I realized they were ending the show, Charlie's reaction was the first thing I was looking for.
If all of this ends up going down, we could officially say it’s the end of an era for late night shows, which at this point in time wouldn’t be a bad thing. It had its time but it wore out its welcome long ago.

@@GrimNephilim "Nobody protests for the incredibly low income jobs that literally make or break our country"
thats because blue collar unions have been dead for almost a century due to union busting, legislations that favor coporations, and scaring new employees into not forming unions, and in some cases bringing in the national guard to kill workers (the later im refering to the West Virginia Coal Wars)
the only reason why SAG, IATSE, and the Writer's guild is able to shut down their entire industry, is because they are powerful enough to even *attempt* to get coporations into the negotiation table.
moral of the story, your labor matters, no matter what career you are in. there is no such thing as a "real job". and once you go down that path and put down another worker, you dont care about the working class.
