I used to have a wonderful loving smaller dog but, whether or not through my own inability to socialise him adequately, he tended to be aggressive towards other male dogs. In our walks I always had him in a leash of course, but over 15 wonderful years the amount of fights he got into with unleashed dogs was incredible. Almost every single one of those owners would let their dogs approach mine no matter what I said, confidently saying that their dog "is a sweetheart ", "harmless" etc. Ive had to kick several of them quite brutally which I absolutely hate to do. I really wished I could just kick the owners.

i only ever walk my dog unleashed in the very early morning on empty back roads and i always have a leash with me. i take training very seriously and i think walking unleashed is important for him to learn how to listen to me without physical restrictions, but the actions described in this comment are deplorable and irresponsible. when dogs get into fights they rely on their instincts not their training and i never trust owners like that, too many times have i heard people say oh he’s well trained and i look at their couch and the corners are shredded or he’s super sweet just for him to go hog wild as soon as they let him off leash it’s so irresponsible to not leash around people and animals even as an owner who actually does train my dog well.

this exactly, I'm a horse-back rider and unleashed dogs come up to me all the time. This used to not be an issue as my horse is pretty well behaved, but then one of them bit her. Since then she absolutely hates dogs and will kick them if they get close.
So every time I try to yell and warn people, but of course they don't listen, or worse the dog doesn't come to them on command and bounces right for me. And then they have the audacity to get angry when my horse starts to kick? Like keep your animal under control and out of the way of mine and there would have been no issue

@Im DDaltoN hate to break it to ya but leash laws are usually established through local ordinances. While only two States have statewide leash laws almost all States have laws against “dogs at large” and the majority of areas in the US have local leash laws. It doesn’t matter how well you think you know how to train or watch a dog they should always be leashed, mainly for their protection. As far as children, well yeah most should be leashed, but that isn’t mandated.

A lot of dog owners are responsible and nice, but there's also a good many that don't bother to train their dog at all or think that their dog being aggressive is just "playing" or "saying hi," and a leash is necessary to get my dog out of those situations fast.

I'm glad that Charlie took a level-headed approach to this by acknowledging that the original firmer was irresponsible for trying to leave his dog unleashed in public. There was a dog we took in at the shelter I work at over the summers who was nearly put down because he attacked another dog while on a walk. He wasn’t on a leash.
You’d never have guessed it because he’s the sweetest dog normally, even around most dogs but I guess this one particular one just rubbed him the wrong way.
All this is to say, it’s not about if the dog likes people. It’s about if the dogs gets along with other dogs. Please, for your dogs sake, leash them up.

@@hafirenggayuda on a small tangent, I love how some dog owners despise cats like they're pure evil... when dogs love to bark at anyone passing by their gate and they have to be monitored and held with a leash because even medium sized dogs can potentially do a lot of damage if they get mad and attack.
I just havent heard stories of cats causing someone's death with bites or scratches, most of the time they just run away.
Ive seen videos of unleashed pitbulls attacking kids and elders in their neighborhood and heard a story of guard dogs, a dobermann and a german shepherd, murdering and partially eating a kid.
Overall, dogs are nerfed wolves, please be responsible and don't let your affections and biased trust cost others' safety and even lives, dear owners.

What charlie didn't mention about the danger of dogs not on a leach in public is how the dog could be nice and friendly but will run up to another dog who isn't friendly that will fight with them, rather in aggression or for being over protective over their owner.
My old dog was super nice to strangers and dogs when we went out to dog parks (as long as he wasn't at my mom's feet and no dogs ran up to her) But one time when we were eating out one day and had him on the leach a smaller unleashed dog ran up to us to say hi and got pinned was bleeding from a bite wound. Lucky it was just his ear and we pulled him off of them and they ran back but he could have killed that dog

Yep. Every damn neighbor I've seen walking without a leash, I am sure to tell them that I know of dogs in the nieghborhood that are reactive to other dogs approaching them. The owners of the reactive dogs ALWAYS have their dogs leashed and actively keep an eye out for unleashed dogs or things that could bother their dog. The reaction I get from the non-leashed dog ownsers is always the same: "Well thanks for letting me know, but my dog doesn't run up to strangers and listens to me."
