Great video!! It sounds like "MIXED VOICE" is an un-pulled chest voice in a relatively low volume with a "falsetto-ish" sensation cause by pitch.

    • @KevinWuOfficial
      @KevinWuOfficial 3 роки тому +7

@@StudioWestLessons Thanks for the detail respond!! As a singer I actually don't think about "mixing" when I reach for my high note lol (though my songs are not super high), I actually just think about "chest", whether I want a louder chest, or a relatively quieter chest. The physical sensation might change a little bit as pitch goes higher, the "nasal resonance" might be a little bit more prominent? The tonal quality might gets a little thinner, but it still feels like a "chest voice" to me, or as a first person experience, producing the "mixed voice" and producing the "chest voice" they felt like in the same category. I actually don't feel like merging into falsetto that much(?) Don't know if that make sense. lol Because a falsettoey sound, or a "heady" voice can be quite loud in some instances, but it doesn't feel or sounds a "chest"? So I would just think about "mix" as a more relax? or lower volume chest? LOL!! Anyways, I think your video explains a lot, and very insightful. Will be looking forward for your new update. 👍

people have all kinds of understanding of mixed voice, its certainly not pulled, not falsetto and has stronger core support than the heady voice.
its called mixed because it has the tone quality of both heady and chesty sound voice, the mix balance can be varied.
The Volume is inevitably high, getting chesty tones in high notes requires to get louder or you wont get the resonnance, you dont get it by getting louder, you get louder when you can hear the Chesty Tone correctly in your head.

Dude...this video was *exactly* what I needed! I started singing about 2 years ago and while I was lucky enough to discover fairly early on how to bring my chest voice up and not break into falsetto, I always struggled with having too much chest and sounding kinda...dying cat-like when I got past about a G4/G#4. I looked everywhere for answers and nothing really clicked for me. I had even given up the past few months in that while I still enjoyed singing I stopped actively seeking out ways to improve because I had kinda resigned myself to the fact that I just wasn't meant to sing and other negative thoughts. Then this video popped up in my feed and it just clicked. It's still difficult in that the coordination will definitely take a while to become consistent but I can say for the first time in my short singing adventures that I was able to get past my bridge and have it feel...easy. Effortless almost. Seriously good video and hope for your success in your singing career/channel! You're doing really, really good stuff.

What I love about this video is that you cover basically everything that I’ve heard many vocal coaches try and explain about mixed voice over the years... but in a way that actually makes sense and makes it clear you understand it. I find myself thinking, “oh so that’s what that guy meant”. It also makes it clear that the other coaches probably don’t understand these things or latch onto a narrow collection of them. Here are some things they talk about:
    - Early and late bridging (what does it mean guys?!? How?!).
    - low larynx helps you connect (neglecting to mention that once you raise the larynx again, you need to consider volume and mouth shape).
    - you need to narrow vowels as you go through the passagio (not noticing the passive vowel changes that occur when you don’t get louder. You are curbing. It isn’t necessary).
    - You want to stay on the same “muh” sound as you go higher. You can tell you’re pulling chest if the vowel splats bla bla bla (again failing to notice that ironically the vowel changes passively if you mix and the only way to keep the vowel the same is to pull chest).
    - there is no mixed voice. This term is confusing to singers (fair enough, except that there definitely is a point where the sound opens up and becomes yell-ish when certain rules are obeyed and this can easily be identified as pulling chest. Same for the more closed sound of mix that occurs when certain rules are obeyed... it CAN be defined).
-pharyngeal resonance bla bla bla (not necessary).
-if you start by pull chest, there’s no way you can get to the “right” coordination. Light and right bla bla bla. (It seems this isn’t the case and you’ve probably noticed it isn’t).

Just wanna share my experience as beginner whom always crack falsetto whenever i sing higher than E4.
After 2 month of practice i can sing up to B4 (not always stable but i can tell if i continue i will get there).
The really key thing you have to watch out for this 18:50. He basically demonstrated the good vocal cords coordination so that you can smoothly transition between loud and quiet.
When i started I CAN'T DO THAT AT ALL, i feel like there is a huge missing gap, and when i attempted it just sound like: falsetto -> vocal fry screech noise -> random yodeling voice crack -> chest voice.
I want to tell everyone you can work on this "transition" on a single tone you can comfortably sing like c4, use the "magic trio" to aid you balance.
One day i was able to do the transition, and when i stopped at the middle (the mixed voice), i was able to move up to A4 pretty easily.
Don't know if this will help at all but i hope it does haha
edit: Forgot to say my understanding was all thanks to this video 😀

This took me almost a full year from watching your videos to develop this and man it was a journey but I am now considering a career in singing. I never thought it was possible for me to even possible. In the end it was sensation sorting and watching UA-cam videos over and over while dong CDs. I also got a coach and learned that I had to go downward with my mix and WOW the difference it makes in your voice is freaking drastic. It's like you find yourself. I swere that's what it felt like. I even got classified as counter tenor which shocked me. I just did this cause I enjoyed it and wondered where I could come from like you did. I wish I would of recorded it man to show me people it's possible.

There is no tension in my voice while doing it, just feels rig ht tho. Also hitting higher notes is much much easier without straining. I've recently started again, attempting this time to build a solid foundation using proper vocal exercises and learning mixed voice rather than straining for high notes with chest. This video is amazing, and i'm so happy that i've encountered someone who experienced that same period of 'inconsistency', 'strain' and, above all else, 'frustration'.

Thanks to your video I think I found my mixed voice! It s very loud and I can hit C5 very easily. The way I found it is more like this= Head Voice+vibrato/compression+ raising soft palate ( by using vocal cry). Is my method correct? Thanks for all your help and your singing technique videos!

I'm probably going to have to book a session with you for discussion about a couple of what I consider to be, positive attributes of tone and an evaluation for the purpose of reliable incorporation to my vocal toolbox.
I have a character voice (think Willkommen from Cabaret, low register Elvis ballads & singers of the 20s/30s.
I used to be able to call up a controlled helium/Donald Duck character this is much more difficult since I began practicing your techniques about a year ago, which have been of such tremendous benefit the trade-off is more than worth it. That latter voice was not sustainable for any practical length of time ie I couldn't maintain it to voice over a feature length animation. It could also be due to age. Without warm up I can cleanly access notes without falsetto and with an ease I could never have imagined 10 years ago ... at the same time, my lowest, riches notes which were always dependable are a strain if I can get to them at all. I'm thinking this is a combination of the pitch raise Knowing to the male voice as it ages combined with discovering my true voice.
I like practicing volume, tone/timbre control on sustained notes. There is a SUBTLE quality I love in the tone of certain singers that in my mind, is "woody/flutie" & compares with reed or double reed instruments in their lowest registers. Think clarinet, oboe, bassoon ...not sax so much (ok maybe Alto SOMETIMES), Also, certain Vox Humana stops on a pipe organ.
The 1st time I became aware of it was in the 90s on Linda Ronstadt's, "What's New?"
    album.
I don't know if there is a term for it. Is this aspect I like, creak, fry or even a vocal characteristic worthy or dangerous to pursue. Is it a legit technique with a name? If so, can one develop it or is what I am hearing idiosyncratic to those singers voices?
Streisand (Broadway album) sometimes has it when sustaining a single note (a bar or more). She couples this with, in my opinion, a signature technique of "thinning" or "thickening" tone independant of volume, which is also something I practice/endeavor to incorporate.
Linda Eder incorporates this to a lesser degree.
In contrast I have never heard it in Dinah Washington's voice although I'm a huge fan of her tone, diction, elocution, and enunciation.
I am hearing it for the 1st time in "my" voice & am working at controlling its implementation. It seems easiest when I've been practicing subsonic and then singing those notes in the regular register.
At some point I definitely have to book an hour with you IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in sharing your take on this as well as an exercise or two I could use.

I really loved this video. The concepts explained really helps and obviously, the way you explained it and prensented it is fun and interesting😂😂.
But I have a doubt. While hitting high notes in mixed range, I try to keep my larynx lowered, but it automatically gets lifted up, how much ever I try. So, should we always lower our larynx, while in the mixed register?
