@@paultsworld You're very welcome, Paul! 🤗 Your dedication and hard work in creating such beautiful content deserve recognition and appreciation. That was a lovely colourful garden tour. Front area is so manicured. So many beautiful Hydrangeas. We are always surprised at where our Verbenas pop up. Such a dainty plant and the birds love the seedheads.
Your garden is looking beautiful Paul and the Hydrangeas look amazing especially the blue Zorro. The little hedgehog is so sweet. I’m sure there will be plenty of interest for you at David Austin - have a nice holiday Wendy You are correct - the only time hedgehogs are out in daytime is when a mother is needing extra food for hoglets - otherwise something could be wrong with them. Good Morning Paul, The garden looks so good. I am amazed that everything looks so good, simply because with all that rain many things grow too fast and flop really badly, perhaps the colder weather has slowed the growth and everything is at it's best. What a year for hydrangeas, they all look magnificent. I hope we have a wet summer, too. What native animals in Britain eat slugs? I hope the foot has resolved.... but no excuses, on your hands and knees with the weeding!! CRAWL! where's your dedication? 😜🤣 We are in for a stunning day here, sunny and 16 deg C and rain later, so I'm off to find things to do in the garden.
Howdy Margaret, glad you've enjoyed the garden. Many people think hedgehogs eat loads of slugs but in fact it's a last resort for them and anyway they much prefer the kitten biscuits I put out for them - I've seen blackbirds eat the odd small one but the ones I see mostly are massive and I don't know any creature that would tackle them. I'm keeping the 'foot' as a great excuse - any time I feel overwhelmed with garden work - it's the foot! 😁 I'd like to say my dedication shows no bounds but alas... Enjoy your sunny Winter's day in the garden.
Thank you Pam. I’m missing the robin as well. He’s gone to another territory but his son or daughter is taking an interest in the garden - so fingers crossed.
New subscriber here, love your garden, it's absolutely beautiful ! Stunning ! I love hydrangeas too (I have 8) so far. My new passion is for roses. Watching your earlier videos, and looking forward to more. Tfs, Michelle.
I always 'like' Paul, your garden should have Stars *****! How beautifully everything has grown since your first videos. I'd replace that conifer for a more attractive one. My cedar can ne cut back occasionally; a lovely tree. The shed bed is great; what next, I wonder?
Thank you Wendy! I agree but can you imagine removing that tree!! The whole of that terrace would have to be destroyed 😀. It does give a nice height to the garden and balances the other trees - previous owner put it in but I think it’s grown a bit since then….unnoticed like most things.
@@paultsworld It probably takes a great amount of water too. It could be lowered like topiary - there's a sideline for another series! Any tree work can be done in careful stages - or you could grow clematis around it.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos, Paul. They're so refreshing and educative. I just hope my garden may look a little as yours in two or three years. I live in the North of France, and although the climate and soil quality are different, I can manage to get hydrangeas of various types to grow here.
What a fantastic garden, Paul! And your hydrangeas, wow, you should be renamed Mr Hydrangeamaster! My penstemons disappeared a long time ago and I have given up on them entirely. I have recently found out that from the insect's point of view the only hydrangeas really worth paying a visit (good food value for the flying time) are H. serrata, H.quercifolia nad H.arborescens. It might give both of us food for thought :-) PS. I used to fancy the Zorro (Guy Williams) I watched on TV as a child.
Thank you Jolanta - so pleased you love hydrangeas 😊. That’s interesting - I don’t have an arborescens (I think they droop?) luckily I have lots of serrata which I take to be the lacecaps (?) I’ll keep an eye on my three varieties of oakleaf and see if they are more visited than the paniculatas. I love that kind of study. In 2005 I seem to remember paying a bit more attention to Catherine Zeta Jones than Zorro - even though he was a legend.
@@paultsworld Who wouldn't have paid attention to the multi-talented Catherine, especially in "Chicago", from the same decade, I believe. H.arborescens droops terribly, especially after rain, and requires sturdy supports. Mine has produced huge flower clusters this year, some of the stems are already broken.
@@paultsworld H.arborescens droops terribly and requires sturdy supports. Mine has produced huge flower clusters this year, some of the stems are already broken. I believe the lacecaps (serrata) are called Japanese mountain hydrangeas in some far-flung corners of this world. PS. Catherine and her legs, especially in "Chicago" :-) Apparently, she started her career as a dancer in musicals and it still shows.
She did indeed and it was at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London when she got her big break in 42nd St. I was there as a photographer backstage to photograph the cast. I remember telling her how good she was but she seemed to know that already.
@@paultsworld Goodness me, you've been everywhere and met everyone! I love 42nd Street, I've tried to watch the version with Clare Halse as Peggy (there're bits of it on YT) online but it's impossible if you're not a Brit registered in the UK. It's a pity, really, I wanted to pay for it.
As always Paul, your hydrangeas are an absolute triumph!! I love them combined with hostas or phlox. Can I ask, do you feed them, or just let them get on with it, as long as they get lots of water? Thanks for another lovely tour of your summer garden, it really lifts the spirits after what has been a pretty dreary season 😊
Thank you Lindsay - sounds nice; hydrangeas. phlox & hostas. I don't have a regular program on the feeding; I just occasionally add some azalea (ericaceous) liquid feed to a watering can as I'm filling it. Hydrangeas do really 'lift' the Summer months and keep going - just what I like.
Hi paul. Your garden is divine. My hydrangea s are very good this year. But your zorra one is beautiful. Do you feed the ones in pots. Thank you for a wonderful look at your garden. I really enjoy it. Just as you said someone coming in to land i smiled as we hope to land tomorrow night into Stanstead. Visiting my daughter in essex. And good weather i hope. God bless x
Hi Catherine, bet your hydrangeas are also loving this rain. I feed every now and then - usually just add in a little azalea food when filling the watering can. Have a nice time in Essex. All the best. x
Yes, Bobo! I think I have one but because I didn’t make a note of the name when I bought it I am not sure if it is a Bobo or not - would love to know for sure.
hola señor Paul💚bello Jardín, tu Ortencias muy bonitas, son unas de mis favoritas, pero en mi jardín he plantado muchas, y se mueren, por el calor, bendiciones 🙌😃
Your hydrangea collection is looking lovely. They’ve enjoyed all the rain we’ve had. Dying to see what you do with the bed that used to be tropical. Do you think it was the cold and wet that killed those plants. I’m in ne England ( Durham) and it’s been raining since Christmas with only 2 short warm spells. I’m taking a leaf out of your book and planting more Hydrangers . Great video thank you 🌻
I’m amazed at how many hydrangeas I’ve got - they’re so easy to propagate as well. Low maintenance as well. I do think it was more the wet than the cold as this last Winter wasn’t a bad one. The cannas have all come up and are looking good but the palm tree is only just hanging on!
Love your garden its perfect and so tidy. i have lost dahlias and salvia amistad this year the slugs and snails keep nibbling off the shoots as they come through the ground. I cant get a good slug killer. L😊ots of my plants are damaged and tatty including my my brunnera the silver leaf one.
I’ve had the same with all those plants - yes, even the brunnera leaves! Most will be OK for next year but I don’t expect my amistad to recover - Shame as it was great a year ago.
Ah, the perils of the Winter Plant Slaughter! I always seem to lose something, it’s often so random. I had a perfect section of garden that was ruined by a bad winter and I’ve never quite achieved the same perfection in that area to date! I feel your pain😞 What a beautiful collection of hydrangeas you have, Paul! Wow😮 I love that pink and blue one! Does that happen coz the soil is neutral there? I’m confused🫤 I’m having fun with my trail cam. It’s set up at my pond at present, I might move it soon coz I’m not getting much nocturnal action - only neighbours’ cats!!😂 But I am getting some nice squirrel selfies during the day (he loves to look right into the lens) and a wide variety of birds drinking and bathing in the shallow end!😊
Random is the word! A couple of plants died and they gave me absolutely no good reason. Those pink/blue hydrangeas confuse me as well - I suppose some of the roots have found a more acidic soil and transfer that up the some of the blooms. My soil must waver about the neutral. Glad you're enjoying the trail cam. The hedgehogs don't walk round the camera tripod; just barge into it and the robin stands on top and does a delicate little poo on the solar panel as it flies off. The pond is usually a good place for a camera as I find most animals find their way there at some stage.
As you do experiment with placement you'll soon be getting the picture of what wildlife is doing what, where...and how! Sometimes it can be fun to leave a little 'bait' in front of the camera to see what happens.
After finding a verbena 'bonariensis' seedling, I think that's what yours is. Tall, jagged leaves on wide stems, with round flowers: mine died (at 750 ft. things do!) but you'll probably get seedlings. Have you tried splitting plants now, and keep half in buried pot?
Loving the garden, as always! Alas, some of those fabulous varieties are not available in the US :( What was that furry friend at the end of the video?? It looked like a hedgehog, but I'm guessing it was something else....
Glad you enjoyed my garden. You are correct - it’s a hedgehog - she visits my garden every evening just after sunset and then through the night. I leave kitten biscuits out for her. 🦔
Hey, recently discovered your channel and I can’t help but to be impressed! I’m attempting to make my garden more wildlife friendly, especially for our insects etc. forgive me for asking but may you do a video or even reply if you have the time giving myself and other viewers your top ten native plants and shrubs that encourage bees and butterflies into the garden? Would be much appreciated, many thanks !
Welcome to my channel and thank you for finding me! The best plants are those with long flower spikes with a multitude of small flowers such as the purple loosestrife I featured. Buddleia is the number one and all the butterflies gravitate to it. In the August video I'll show more of that type of plant as they're just coming out - liatris is a good example. Just make sure all your shrubs are good flowering shrubs - actually even rhododendrons that flower early is much loved by bees.
I'm afraid one day you're going to regret planting Verbena bonariensis, Sir. It self-seeds profusely everywhere, I mean really everywhere, even in the pots with suposedly seed-free compost straight from a bag. I'm experimenting with Verbena hastata now. Cheers!
For a number of years I couldn’t get it to survive and seed! But I have noticed it’s starting to get going - I’ll keep an eye on it but have wanted some ever since I saw a couple of goldfinches swinging on them and eating the seeds. Just off to google Verbena hastata! Cheers Jolki.
That’s a good point, thank you - however that particular plant split itself under its own weight (with the help of a downpour) a few years ago and I have a cable tie holding the base together. I’ll cut the tie and see what happens! Maybe I should take some cuttings first 😀
I have seen you use blood, fish and bone fertilizer in one of your videos. How do you stop foxes digging up your flower bed after you have used blood, fish and bone fertilizer?
Hi Paul good to see you again! Your garden is looking beautiful as always. Thats definitely helianthus lemon queen your sister gave to you, i chelsea chopped mine this year as it always flopped! Hows your brugmansias? My charles grimaldi has its first flower forming so very exciting! Cant waite to smell it when it blooms as I remember you saying its the most fragrant. Im also trying cestrum nocturnum or night blooming jasmine which also has flower buds! I will let you know about its fragrance as it is meant to be very strong but gorgeous🌻🌼🪻
Cheers Steve, thank you for confirming the 'Lemon Queen' and the Chelsea Chop for it! My brugmansias are very late - so far only got one flower out on my pink one. The Charles Grimaldi has flowers starting but not near opening yet - we could do with some consistent warm weather. I've never had a jasmine - must get one.

Always a pleasure to watch your videos, Paul. They're so refreshing and educative. I just hope my garden may look a little as yours in two or three years. I live in the North of France, and although the climate and soil quality are different, I can manage to get hydrangeas of various types to grow here.
Thank you. You’ll be surprised how quickly your plants will grow and look great - especially with your warmer climate.
That’s interesting - I don’t have an arborescens (I think they droop?) luckily I have lots of serrata which I take to be the lacecaps (?)
I’ll keep an eye on my three varieties of oakleaf and see if they are more visited than the paniculatas.
Just beautiful Paul🌸
Thank you Eddree.
All the best. x
Glorious!!!
Thank you
Love all the hydrangeas and the tour. Have you looked into Bobo hydrangea? I love this one grows on the smaller side. A proven winners one.
Yes, Bobo! I think I have one but because I didn’t make a note of the name when I bought it I am not sure if it is a Bobo or not - would love to know for sure.
Your garden is exceptional. Love the variety How do you keep your property so well manicured? I look forward to all your videos.
I am very pleased you enjoy my videos. I only film the good bits ;-) reminds me I must mow the lawn, always something to do.
It would be good to add irises in the water area, they look very pretty when they bloom
You’re right! I have yellow flag irises and iris versicolor in the water.
Paul any idea which month you tried to kill. LOL your lovely white Hydrangea , I would like to watch it again. Lovely garden tour Thankyou Paul
Hi Pam, here is a link to the video where I pruned it back....big-time!

Ah, the perils of the Winter Plant Slaughter! I always seem to lose something, it’s often so random. I had a perfect section of garden that was ruined by a bad winter and I’ve never quite achieved the same perfection in that area to date! I feel your pain😞
What a beautiful collection of hydrangeas you have, Paul! Wow😮 I love that pink and blue one! Does that happen coz the soil is neutral there? I’m confused🫤
I’m having fun with my trail cam.
@@paultsworld I’ll keep it there a little longer. Your Robin pooping delicately!! 😳😆
As you do experiment with placement you'll soon be getting the picture of what wildlife is doing what, where...and how! Sometimes it can be fun to leave a little 'bait' in front of the camera to see what happens.
@@paultsworld yes I think I’m going to have to do that. Top tip👍🏻
Good luck - you never know what might turn up - bit of a waiting game.
Naughty foot! In your bed, foot…with no supper!! 😂

After finding a verbena 'bonariensis' seedling, I think that's what yours is. Tall, jagged leaves on wide stems, with round flowers: mine died (at 750 ft. things do!) but you'll probably get seedlings. Have you tried splitting plants now, and keep half in buried pot?
Yes, mine are ‘bonariensis’. I have had some seedlings in various places.
I never thought of splitting them - sounds a good idea, thanks for the tip.
@@paultsworld Awwww that's so sweet!!!!!
@@paultsworld thank you so much for replying, really appreciate you taking the time! Your advice is duly noticed 🫡
You're very welcome.
🌺
Thank you!
Also, I don't know if you can divide paniculata hydrangeas like you can the macrophylla. They have a different structure.
That’s a good point, thank you - however that particular plant split itself under its own weight (with the help of a downpour) a few years ago and I have a cable tie holding the base together. I’ll cut the tie and see what happens! Maybe I should take some cuttings first 😀
❤🎉😊
👍🌻
I have seen you use blood, fish and bone fertilizer in one of your videos. How do you stop foxes digging up your flower bed after you have used blood, fish and bone fertilizer?
I haven’t had a problem with foxes and the blood & fish fertiliser - I didn’t even know they were attracted to it. I always hoe it into the soil.
@@paultsworld Thank you for your reply and I will try this fertilizer on my Peruvian lilies.
You’re welcome👍
Hi Paul good to see you again! Your garden is looking beautiful as always. Thats definitely helianthus lemon queen your sister gave to you, i chelsea chopped mine this year as it always flopped! Hows your brugmansias? My charles grimaldi has its first flower forming so very exciting! Cant waite to smell it when it blooms as
I remember you saying its the most fragrant.
Gorgeous garden and so colourful yet not a bedding plant in sight. Thank you for the tour.
@vivienarnold7950 That's a good point - I don't tend to buy bedding plants, but they can look very nice.
