      @@paultsworld You're very welcome, Paul! 🤗 Your dedication and hard work in creating such beautiful content deserve recognition and appreciation. I have learnt so much from you, I even learnt from this video that I have an oak leaf hydrangea. I recently discovered it in my garden, and I didn't plant it so I wasn't sure where it came from or what it was. It hasn't started flowering yet, but it looks exactly like the one in this video. I have been wondering what it is for several weeks and as soon as I saw it in your video, I figured it out. 😃

    Your garden is looking beautiful Paul and the Hydrangeas look amazing especially the blue Zorro. The little hedgehog is so sweet. I was led to believe that if you saw them in the day then they weren't well but that little chappie looks really healthy and appears to be enjoying exploring his surroundings. I'm so excited as I'm going to David Austin's in Shropshire when we're on holiday next week. Just hope there's some blooms to see as we're a bit late in the season and the roses are probably past their best. My list of "wants" is getting bigger by the minute!

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому +2

      I didn’t think I particularly liked blue plants but I do now!
      I’m sure there will be plenty of interest for you at David Austin - have a nice holiday Wendy
      You are correct - the only time hedgehogs are out in daytime is when a mother is needing extra food for hoglets - otherwise something could be wrong with them.
      The video is a little misleading in that it is sunset and Henrietta always appears just before it gets totally dark. The camera makes it look lighter than it is. Henrietta likes to arrive before Billy so she gets the kitten biscuits first.
      I then put more out later so there’s some for him as he’s a late riser.

    Good Morning Paul, The garden looks so good. I am amazed that everything looks so good, simply because with all that rain many things grow too fast and flop really badly, perhaps the colder weather has slowed the growth and everything is at it's best. What a year for hydrangeas, they all look magnificent. I hope we have a wet summer, too. What native animals in Britain eat slugs? I hope the foot has resolved.... but no excuses, on your hands and knees with the weeding!! CRAWL! where's your dedication? 😜🤣 We are in for a stunning day here, sunny and 16 deg C and rain later, so I'm off to find things to do in the garden.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому

      Howdy Margaret, glad you've enjoyed the garden. Many people think hedgehogs eat loads of slugs but in fact it's a last resort for them and anyway they much prefer the kitten biscuits I put out for them - I've seen blackbirds eat the odd small one but the ones I see mostly are massive and I don't know any creature that would tackle them.
      I'm keeping the 'foot' as a great excuse - any time I feel overwhelmed with garden work - it's the foot! 😁 I'd like to say my dedication shows no bounds but alas...
      Enjoy your sunny Winter's day in the garden.

    What a fantastic garden, Paul! And your hydrangeas, wow, you should be renamed Mr Hydrangeamaster! My penstemons disappeared a long time ago and I have given up on them entirely. I have recently found out that from the insect's point of view the only hydrangeas really worth paying a visit (good food value for the flying time) are H. serrata, H.quercifolia nad H.arborescens. It might give both of us food for thought :-) PS. I used to fancy the Zorro (Guy Williams) I watched on TV as a child.

      Thank you Jolanta - so pleased you love hydrangeas 😊. That’s interesting - I don’t have an arborescens (I think they droop?) luckily I have lots of serrata which I take to be the lacecaps (?)
      I’ll keep an eye on my three varieties of oakleaf and see if they are more visited than the paniculatas. I love that kind of study.
      In 2005 I seem to remember paying a bit more attention to Catherine Zeta Jones than Zorro - even though he was a legend.

    As always Paul, your hydrangeas are an absolute triumph!! I love them combined with hostas or phlox. Can I ask, do you feed them, or just let them get on with it, as long as they get lots of water? Thanks for another lovely tour of your summer garden, it really lifts the spirits after what has been a pretty dreary season 😊

      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому

      Thank you Lindsay - sounds nice; hydrangeas. phlox & hostas. I don't have a regular program on the feeding; I just occasionally add some azalea (ericaceous) liquid feed to a watering can as I'm filling it. Hydrangeas do really 'lift' the Summer months and keep going - just what I like.

    Your hydrangea collection is looking lovely. They’ve enjoyed all the rain we’ve had.
    Dying to see what you do with the bed that used to be tropical.
    Do you think it was the cold and wet that killed those plants.
    I’m in ne England ( Durham) and it’s been raining since Christmas with only 2 short warm spells.
    I’m taking a leaf out of your book and planting more Hydrangers .
    Great video thank you 🌻

      I’m amazed at how many hydrangeas I’ve got - they’re so easy to propagate as well. Low maintenance as well.
      I do think it was more the wet than the cold as this last Winter wasn’t a bad one. The cannas have all come up and are looking good but the palm tree is only just hanging on!

    Ah, the perils of the Winter Plant Slaughter! I always seem to lose something, it’s often so random. I had a perfect section of garden that was ruined by a bad winter and I’ve never quite achieved the same perfection in that area to date! I feel your pain😞
    What a beautiful collection of hydrangeas you have, Paul! Wow😮 I love that pink and blue one! Does that happen coz the soil is neutral there? I’m confused🫤
    I’m having fun with my trail cam. It’s set up at my pond at present, I might move it soon coz I’m not getting much nocturnal action - only neighbours’ cats!!😂 But I am getting some nice squirrel selfies during the day (he loves to look right into the lens) and a wide variety of birds drinking and bathing in the shallow end!😊

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  5 місяців тому +1

      Random is the word! A couple of plants died and they gave me absolutely no good reason. Those pink/blue hydrangeas confuse me as well - I suppose some of the roots have found a more acidic soil and transfer that up the some of the blooms. My soil must waver about the neutral.
      Glad you're enjoying the trail cam. The hedgehogs don't walk round the camera tripod; just barge into it and the robin stands on top and does a delicate little poo on the solar panel as it flies off.
      The pond is usually a good place for a camera as I find most animals find their way there at some stage.

    After finding a verbena 'bonariensis' seedling, I think that's what yours is. Tall, jagged leaves on wide stems, with round flowers: mine died (at 750 ft. things do!) but you'll probably get seedlings. Have you tried splitting plants now, and keep half in buried pot?

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  4 місяці тому

      Yes, mine are ‘bonariensis’. I have had some seedlings in various places.
      I never thought of splitting them - sounds a good idea, thanks for the tip.

I’m attempting to make my garden more wildlife friendly, especially for our insects etc. forgive me for asking but may you do a video or even reply if you have the time giving myself and other viewers your top ten native plants and shrubs that encourage bees and butterflies into the garden? Would be much appreciated, many thanks !

    • @paultsworld

      Welcome to my channel and thank you for finding me! The best plants are those with long flower spikes with a multitude of small flowers such as the purple loosestrife I featured. Buddleia is the number one and all the butterflies gravitate to it. In the August video I'll show more of that type of plant as they're just coming out - liatris is a good example. Just make sure all your shrubs are good flowering shrubs - actually even rhododendrons that flower early is much loved by bees.

    I'm afraid one day you're going to regret planting Verbena bonariensis, Sir. It self-seeds profusely everywhere, I mean really everywhere, even in the pots with suposedly seed-free compost straight from a bag. I'm experimenting with Verbena hastata now. Cheers!

      For a number of years I couldn’t get it to survive and seed! But I have noticed it’s starting to get going - I’ll keep an eye on it but have wanted some ever since I saw a couple of goldfinches swinging on them and eating the seeds.
      Just off to google Verbena hastata! Cheers Jolki.
