It feels bad for random strangers to assume youre incompetent and call you "love" becsuse you're a woman. Men need to be stronger than this.
@@ragepig1059 how is asking for a detective assuming she is incompetent? Not everyone has the same role, if you ask for a nurse and a doctor answers or vice versa that doesn't imply one is incompetent. I'm not sure where you are from, but love is a common form of affection in many parts of the UK in some regions regularly used towards men, I have done so myself and been called love many a time. Occasionally people from outside those regions see it on youtube and are upset, interpreting it as sexism despite it not being said or received with that connotation.
If it was a man, he would still request to speak to a detective. It’s not sexist. Whenever I call a grocery store to speak with a manager, whoever answers the phone, I always ask for the manager even if it was a manager answering the phone. But, to avoid any misunderstandings, what’s the best way to have avoided this situation ? Should he have asked, “Am I speaking to a detective?” Does that give some positive affirmation ?

No huge meltdown for being mistaken for a secretary or switchboard operator. Just a brief apology and straight to business.
No need for apologize.

Answering the phone with your name and title like a normal human instead of just the words "flying squad" would have sorted that.
