I own the Chuck 70 and I would never buy the normal converses now. They’re just significantly better in aesthetics and quality and they don’t come apart
As I live in East Asia, I'm kinda being close to Japanese shoes. I have 2 pairs of made-in-japan converse, they're both great sneaker, especially, its look is still timeless and classic. The duration is not bad, they started to tear apart after 2-3 years of heavy usage, which is acceptable. But after I tried Japanese vulcanized shoes, Moonstar shoes, I realized another level of duration, it has been almost five years of wearing Moonstar shoes and it's still intact, except the colour is faded, but the shoes itself have none of a single scratch, its structure is tough as hell. I bought the second pair without hesitation. It's my best ever sneaker.
Moonstar is actually the parent company behind Shoes Like Pottery. Shoes Like Pottery was formed after Moonstar introduced the ka-ryu process (kiln firing the soles) into their manufacturing. The models that Moonstar used the ka-ryu method on are what became Shoes Like Pottery.
Hey, great video, thanks for putting it together. I have actually a pair of Japanese Cons. Yes, the Japanese grew tired of the cons falling apart so they improved the over all quality and fit. I have had mine for three years now and they are almost like they were when I bought them.
Yes, Novesta few years was in a hype in Ukraine...I have one pair of vintage from another brand from USSR times (Botas) and you remind me about it. But my favoryt in this season Chuck 70 low suede burgundy - lot of comfort by midsole (eva) and insole...great reissue, I think, great look to
I'm 1.5 years late. Oh well. Geeee, I wonder why $160 japanese made canvas shoes from british companies might be better than $60 crappy chinese slave-made Nike-owned Converse. Haha! Great options here! I want them all. But I think people might be looking for a *similarly priced* alternative to Converse, if that even exists.
Good video, chucks are still the best for me, having worn chucks for yrs, I realized, they have about 4 factories, based in India, china, Vietnam and Indonesia. I have tried all and I'll say Vietnam chucks have the best quality and durability they've lasted me years. My china chucks fell apart in 3months, like completely worn out, India chucks lasted a while longer, followed by Indonesia chucks. I hope this will help.
Yo! Love your channel!! I think the secret to Converse these days is to get the CONS Chuck Taylors that they specifically make for skateboarding (Chuck Taylor All Star Pro High Skate Shoes). The main difference is that it's a suede upper (for durability) as opposed to canvas, but they're built to withstand the abuse of skateboarding, and hence last forever (and still look great!!). They're little tanks :)
@@CeeAreDee they are just reselling the original converse from back in the day for more money. converse manufacturing went overseas in the end of the 90s and it’s all been downhill from there.
Excellent video, appreciate the alternatives. I'm sticking with chucks, their tendency to age is what I love about them, never cared for squeaky clean shoes
I’ll add the Crocs Lace Up Hovers to list. Yep. They’re better than Converse in every way for me; they don’t stink, they fit wider up front, there is NO glue used in their construction (upper is sewn to sole!) and they’re super light. Only downside is they stopped making them in 2015.
Great video I loved it, it’s about time somebody cut us off fall apart sneakers. The only complaint I have is that you didn’t give advice for people who either need narrow or wide fitting shoes I mean yeah if you’re middle of the road all of those brands work but I’ve checked for Wides and I don’t see any in any of those brands
I try my best to stick to products I’ve had my hands on and hopefully have worn a good long time. Unfortunately I don’t have experience with brands thar offer wider fits. But it’s certainly something I’ll keep in mind for the future.
I prefer the "standard" Palladium over Converse since my first Chucks fell apart in the late 80s - but recently I found these "Palladium Unisex Palla Ace CVS trainers" and would recommend them for your list
Those Shoes are Really Cool! Unfortunately, in the 80s, Converse Shoes were declining but happy to see that the Converse 70s are back the way they were made back in the day. Strong built before they started to Deline in the 80s and so on. Peace and Love.
Would not recommend superga, i've owned a couple of pairs and they seem to be glued and fall apart pretty fast. Also have a couple of PRAS and can wholeheartedly recommend them, superb quality.
I really like Moonstar and Shoes Like Pottery, but I can not wear them because of the size. UK 8(I think that's JP 27) is too small, and UK 9 is too large. I'm usually a UK 9.5, so I think they fit large, just in case someone is wondering. RRL is the only choice left for me.
any recommendations for hi top shoes like converse but with a bigger toe box? the shoes are way too narrow for my feet but i love how versatile and sleek they make my outfits look. Also something around the 70 dollar price range would be great.
The Miharas are super special. Had a pair of the Nigel Cabourn’s for a while when we were selling Nigel. I think moonstar is part of Shoe’s like pottery. Not 100% sure tho
For anyone watching after all this time, Novesta sneakers can be purchased in the U.K. from The Union Project. They run really large - I usually take a 10.5 U.K. or a 45 European size. The Novestas that fit me perfectly say that they are 9.5UK or 44European on the box… 🤷🏻♂️
For anyone looking at what the comment section suggests, Last resort is a core skate brand that makes some amazing low and high tops. Great colors and will last longer than standard chucks.
I have a pair of Novesta black and white high tops, and they are fantastic!. I normally wear boots, but on really hot days I wear thin chinos and my novestas 😊
I'm a converse addict - apart from skating in them for 40+ years (no typo) living in Australia with size UK 12 flippers my choices are pretty limited. PRO TIP: Wash your cons in the DISHWASHER - cold cycle, no dry cycle. They sparkle for years. Well, a year. Thanks for the great content as always
All the Japanese shoes are made by Moonstar. They are the og brand that does it with the whole kiln method. They make their own shoes as well, but anything like Shoes Like Pottery and such are just made in the same factory.
Those Shoes Like Pottery I can also vouch that they are kosher. There was no break in period for them. Started wearing them as my daily commuters. Very nibble soles, love them.
Don’t know if anyone has mentioned them to you yet but the company Nothing New makes some of the nicest looking, eco friendly shoes on the market. They’re a sister company if I’m not mistaken to Thursday Boots so you know they’re quality!
Nice! For made EU try Barleycorn. Problem with vulcanised rubber soles is that it gives you smelly feet and no arch support. Very bad for your feet, knees and back. Nike blazers achieve that retro look and were often worn by skaters in the early 80's. Good quality sneakers: New Balance made un UK and USA and National Standard. To hell with summer, I just wear Birkenstock or bare feet....
That’s funny. I’ve actually had the exact opposite experience. With the canvas sneakers my feet are fresh and any kind of trainers it’s horrible. Just imagined that the canvas breathes better. You might be right about the arch support tho. I’ve always used custom sports insoles cause my knees are messed up. That helps a lot.
Hey I got some Levi’s 501 shrink to fit and I was wondering if I didn’t wash them for 6 months and wore them everyday if they would get fades? I am not sure they will as they are pretty light weight? What’s your opinion.
You’ll only get a little fading. At least that’s what I went through. I wore my 501s everyday and it didn’t fade that much. I lightly sanded down some natural fade areas and it looks pretty authentic
Hmm. Depends a lot on lifestyle. I got some decent Fades from a pair of stf 501s back in the day. Really regret selling them now I’m reminded. Would love to know what happened to them
How's the comfort on these trainers? Specifically the US Rubber co's since the regular Converse chucks don't offer much of anything when it pertains to an insole, unless you go and buy the "premium" Chuck 70
Would also recommend: Converse All Star J (Made in Japan version, better quality and shape than all stars along with a slightly thicker sole) regular chuck 70s since all star J isnt very accessible Onitsuka Tiger OK Basketball MT, very historical and heritage heavy shoe, they have a few different versions of it Excelsior sneakers Kolca 1986 high top Domba sneakers, unfortunately their converse alternative is only a low top version Moonstar sneakers, Shoes Like Pottery parent Warrior sneakers you can buy on commonnarratives Stare (Stear) sneakers AGE Sneakers there's obviously stuff like R13 and Visvim but those are expensive for most people xvessel, mihara yasuhiro, and humant official if u want something a bit different
I don’t think I’ve ever put my converse in the wash machine or dryer. I usually spot clean. Great info nonetheless. Been wanting to get a pair of Shoes like Pottery.
would highly recommend slp, have the lows and the sole lasts a long long time, so splitting at all. the canvas has given out on one of the sides but are top notch beater shoes now. comparing them to the 70's they'll have over double the life span, the rubber is *chefs kiss*
I know this is an older video, but I bought a pair of all white leather converse high tops about 4 years ago. They aren't the 70s or any other special pair as far as I'm aware. I've worn them maybe 4 times a week since I've had them, if I were to clean them, they would look like new. Also they were a outlet find at that! I love the videos by the way.
Please help, I wear a us size 13 and it seems that no Japanese brand makes anything bigger than a 12. Am I shit out of luck? Or is there another company or website to order from for my size?
There’s another company I have had luck with called SeaVees. They make several models like deck shoes, or vans, to sandals, but they are better made and more comfortable .
On the same page, I love the way of chucks but never bought any because the only experience I had with them was horrible, excruciating pain on my feet. Nothing New has a pair that are super comfortable, although not canvas, they are made of recycled material. So far after 1.5yrs of wear, they show no signs of wear and for $100 they are affordable for what your getting.
I bought Novesta sneakers for myself, and US Rubber co sneakers for my wife. I think these were made in the same factory in Slovakia. Construction looks the same, boxes are the same, removable insoles are the same. Even the toe split looks the same. Only the sizing, -and sole design looks different.
Can you speak to the sizing of US Rubber co? I recently bought a pair of Novesta low tops and I'm in love.... but I'm smack in between sizes and tried both on to find one of them too tight, and the other way too big. Bummer.
I'd go Tretorn Nylite's before a lot of these if you're looking for a basic, canvas shoe. The soles of the shoes you mentioned all seem too chunky and stand out a bit too much for me. Years of wearing Chuck Taylors have killed my feet so I'm either in boots or Vans old school pros with the arch support.
I have never been a fan of canvas shoes. I wear my shoes hard. The only pair of con's I owned lasted less than 3 months. For the price I think there are much better options. Enjoyed the review.
Thanks man. Yeah I’m the same, cons would almost be a disposable purchase as they would fall apart so quick. But the vulcanised built shoes like novesta really last.
I love the look of Chucks but the quality has gone downhill steadily. The Chuck 70's is by far the most narrow shoe I've ever worn, on par with Nike Blazer. Regular Chucks are not wide by any means either but the lack of cushioning made them a little bit more bearable at least. Even the "wide fit" Chucks are too narrow for my taste. Once I tried Novesta, Converse feel like a pair of toy shoes. Novesta are great for a wider foot and they feel so much more sturdy. Their soles are really good with great arch support and the metal tips on the laces are a nice touch of elevated quality. Let's hope they keep their factory in EU and keep producing decent shoes for the same price.
@@CeeAreDee I find them comfortable and I like that you can find them in the same form on old French Legion pictures. I've worn mine quite a lot over the last five or six years and they still are in good shape, just some stains that even the washing machine can't get rid of..
Ok, so I like the look of most of these. A break down of price would have been interesting to review too. For me, Converse 70s are my go to, lows and highs, leather / suede and canvas. The all weather Boseys are also swish. I do get what you mean about standard CTAS, they are paper thin and the soles don't last., cheap and cheerful. But, all my 70s including leather and suede have been through the machine at 30 (use a washing liquid rather than powder as theres an enzyme in the powder that breaks the glue down, I believe) and my 20+ pairs are still going strong. some have even been overdyed. Personally, the sillhouette of the 70s cant be beat, thats my 5 bob, but then I like square sausage and maramalade together, So what do I know.....
Bahahaha. Each to his own square sausage. Price is a bit tricky to break down as they vary quite a bit depending where you are. Tried to link to the best price I could find. Interesting about the washing powder.
I've been holding back but now I have to make another remark: Your video music is catchy but let's be honest: it's the music of a crack -dealing, slow- driving. owned Mustang convertible , in the heat of the backstreets of Miami, letting the 'hood know Mr. Money is in town with the goods, ma dudes. ( The Glaswegian equivalent would be the Italian owner's ice cream van ).
I like SeeVees, the styling is good. The problem is; ... they could be made better. Although styles in California they are made in China. Still the generally last me two seasons of hard ware and look great!
I want some Indian friendly shoes like this (like I can get a converse for rs.2000, but these shoes aren't available here and the international shipping charges makes em expensive for me)
I love convers, i have had pairs last 5 years, im on a pair for 6 years been through EVERYTHINg i can throw at them. Im talking fire pits(i put my feet like 4 inches from the fire, this may ruin em), mud, concrete, house paint. and theyre lasting. but its time for a new shoe
Regular converse today are low quality. The 70s Cons are well constructed, worth the extra money. PF Flyers are basically Cons on steroids and with arch support, finding your color and size can be an issue. I’m wearing a pair of Red Ball Jets right now, you should check them out.
Brands like Converse and others like DMs and Vans take the piss out of their customers. They have huge markups by manufacturing shoes made with poor fast fashion build quality sold at premium brand prices.
Not saying converses are durable, but washing any shoe in the washing machine is a really bad idea. There are tons of adhesives and fiberboards in most shoes that really don't like being soaked then spun rapidly over and over.
@@uriels4097 read about their brand history in a book called the Tipping Point. Was a case of dilution of the brand identity until it broke the brand. It’s been sold off time and again as far as I know.

I’d heard they were being discontinued. Not sure about it tho
Which is best for wide feet? I think it's Vans Vaults.
Ooft. Sorry buddy. Not too sure
How can I get in touch with you. I am looking to launch my own brand.
write to me on IG, that would be best. @cee.are.dee
Underrated video
Thanks buddy.
How are the sizing for the shoes like pottery?
A little narrow at first. But stretch out to the right size fast. Pretty much true to size.
Haha. It’s like you predicted the latest video. And you’re right on the money.
pretty sure the first three sneakers are from the same manufacturer. moonstar jp. made in kurume.
Yeah. Apparently there are only two factories in Japan making these kinda trainers.
For me it's Chucks 70 hi and Novesta canvas trainers, Palladium for halfway between canvas and boots
Ah. Never thought of Palladium. Not really had much experience with the brand. They are good?
@@CeeAreDee I find them comfortable and I like that you can find them in the same form on old French Legion pictures. I've worn mine quite a lot over the last five or six years and they still are in good shape, just some stains that even the washing machine can't get rid of..
chuck 70😉
Yes, Chuck 70 Series is so much better than the standard Chucks! 👍
@@StealthFX9 Agreed. I'll never buy the standard Chuck taylor's ever again. They're just too uncomfortable. But the 70's are amazing
i wear mine with my uniqlo selvedge and u pocket tee
Great recommendations. Thanks!
You’re welcome 😊
I would disagree on the initial statement because jeans looks great with Van Authentic, Puma Suede, Nike Sb's, Adidas Stans too!
Yeah. Ok. You might have me there.
But, all my 70s including leather and suede have been through the machine at 30 (use a washing liquid rather than powder as theres an enzyme in the powder that breaks the glue down, I believe) and my 20+ pairs are still going strong. some have even
been overdyed. Personally, the sillhouette of the 70s cant be beat, thats my 5 bob, but then I like square sausage and maramalade together, So what do I know.....
Also honouable mention for Jack purcell Cons, more refined, bit preppy. and again, better quality than your standard chucks.
last sidebar...Cons also come in sizes above a UK 10 (handy for those of us with sideshow bob feet)
Ah true. The Purcells are nice!
Another very good point. Think the novestas come in the bigger sizes too.
Bahahaha. Each to his own square sausage. Price is a bit tricky to break down as they vary quite a bit depending where you are. Tried to link to the best price I could find. Interesting about the washing powder.
Wait, I thought converse and vans were vulcanized?
I've been holding back but now I have to make another remark: Your video music is catchy but let's be honest: it's the music of a crack -dealing, slow- driving. owned Mustang convertible , in the heat of the backstreets of Miami, letting the 'hood know Mr. Money is in town with the goods, ma dudes. ( The Glaswegian equivalent would be the Italian owner's ice cream van ).
Go even further back. You’ll love the old one. 😉
I like SeeVees, the styling is good. The problem is; ... they could be made better. Although styles in California they are made in China. Still the generally last me two seasons of hard ware and look great!
Two seasons is not bad with hard wear. Not sure how long the novesta would hold up with constant wear. I am only in them full time during the summer.
I once bought a fender branded pair of shoes that were amazing compared to converse. Shame they don't make them no more
Which model has the widest toe box?
The us rubbers I think.
Pro Keds are great quality for the money!
Heard good things. Yeah.
I got the Still By Hand, Made By Moonstar sneaker. I wanna get the Doek's.
Moonstar seems to be the main factory for all the great Japanese sneakers
I want some Indian friendly shoes like this (like I can get a converse for rs.2000, but these shoes aren't available here and the international shipping charges makes em expensive for me)
How about doek?
I’d never heard of them before. But they look great.
Colchester preceded U.S. Rubber, and was the first “tennis shoe.”
My complaints are over inconsistencies in manufacturing(especially in width) . Size variences, mid sole and soles that are wonky.
In what brand in particular?
The man wears his novestas. Take note
I do. I love them. Not that easy to get over the pond.
What about the Doek Court shoes?
I love convers, i have had pairs last 5 years, im on a pair for 6 years been through EVERYTHINg i can throw at them. Im talking fire pits(i put my feet like 4 inches from the fire, this may ruin em), mud, concrete, house paint. and theyre lasting. but its time for a new shoe
And the fact they discontinued the comfortable as hell chuck taylor 2s
I think they tanked
Ordered a pair of Novesta :-)
Regular converse today are low quality. The 70s Cons are well constructed, worth the extra money. PF Flyers are basically Cons on steroids and with arch support, finding your color and size can be an issue. I’m wearing a pair of Red Ball Jets right now, you should check them out.
The problem with shoes made in Japan is that you can never find bigger sizes. Ie. UK12 or above
Novesta are great, and they're comparable in price to Vans and Converse. The quality is insanely better too.
The quality is far far better right!
Vans also built using the Vulcanized method
Does anyone know if any of these come in wide sizes?
great video thanks
Cheers Sacha. Appreciate it mate
Nothing New is a worthwhile mention
The newer mor cushioned chcucks or the pf flyers are a way better deal.
I'm just here to throw you a "like". I wear boots. ....Too many boots. ;-)
Haha. It’s appreciated Duke. Even in the boots on the hot days?
Give your toes a break man. My toenails would be yellow if I did that!?
Brands like Converse and others like DMs and Vans take the piss out of their customers. They have huge markups by manufacturing shoes made with poor fast fashion build quality sold at premium brand prices.
Mitchell and Ness' Hood rubber Co. Shoes
You ever try washing them in... you know something other than a washing machine?
Thanks for the video! I would love to hear your thoughts on the Veja Nova Hightops. Cheers
Not saying converses are durable, but washing any shoe in the washing machine is a really bad idea. There are tons of adhesives and fiberboards in most shoes that really don't like being soaked then spun rapidly over and over.
I own a pair of Airwalk Men's Legacee Sneaker High-Top, super cheap so I use them I when work in the garden as beat up shoe lol
Airwalk. I didn’t know they were still going.
@@CeeAreDee they used to sponsor big skaters but not anymore so nobody care about them
@@uriels4097 read about their brand history in a book called the Tipping Point. Was a case of dilution of the brand identity until it broke the brand. It’s been sold off time and again as far as I know.
