      It was mentioned in other sources as well. I specifically recall a piece of dialogue (in a novel I can't remember) explaining how the Yuuzhan Vong had difficulty terraforming Coruscant because of them deep underneath the planet.
      They couldn't strip the "breathable" atmosphere like all the other planets, they had to find these generators and destroy them.

    What makes this shield thing even more confusing is that in episode 3, Anakin, Obi, and Palpatine get trapped in a shield which they immediately declare is a Rayshield, and if I recall there's a scene in the Clone Wars that mirrors this

      I think it's because more solid objects like asteroids and the like can pass through without too much issue, however organic objects are easily vaporized which is why you don't see Anakin or Obi-wan being all like, "Shiiiieeet, we'll just walk through this bitch."

Sometimes just the particle Shield is dropped to perform specific actions, leaving them vulnerable to torpedoes. I’d say the autumn class has a good shot against the ISD if it targets a critical subsystem (like the over exposed bridge) with its MAC cannon. If it succeeds, it punches through the shields and cripples the vessel. If it fails, the turbo lasers will tear it to shreds.

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 5 років тому +1

      It also has an insane range advantage, MAC cannons have theoretically no upper range limit (just hard to hit stuff far away), SW turbo lasers seem to be limited to a few 100km at best. Then there's also the missile swarms an autumn can unleash, even with particle shields up, they are proven to be easily overwhelmed by large swarms.
      Then there is the FTL, the ISD is limited to hyperspace lanes, it can't do short jumps nearly as well as an Autumn class can, so even if the ISD does get close its entirely possible to just jump out of range again.
      TBH the only major weakness the Autumn class has, is the ISD does outgun it in close range (by depending on EU/Cannon a varying amount).

    SkyNet vs The Flood
    298th Attempt
    Scenario: SkyNet beats the resistance, and then a Flood Banshee crash-lands on Earth, the Flood form inside does not survive, SkyNet retrieves the body and studies it, and learns the basics of it (it is infectious, has some sort of hive mind, and can take memories), SkyNet analyzes the crashed ship, and manages to decode transmissions from the late Covenant, alerting them of the Flood threat coming to Earth. SkyNet then prepares for the next 5 years.
    The Flood will arrive using multiple High Charity's, including its fleet, weapons, and so on. In Scenario 1, it gets 5 High Charity's, in Scenario 2, it gets 10 High Charity's, and in Scenario 3, it gets 15 High Charities.
    The Flood may not use the Logic Plague on SkyNet.
    SkyNet may not travel back in time and just constantly give pre-Flood War SkyNet better and better stuff and information.
    If SkyNet can survive until Scenario 3 then I personally say that it would win, although if that is not enough, then there's Scenario 4, where each scenario is in fact be a wave that SkyNet has to destroy, and each wave would come a month after the wave before it was totally destroyed. This would give the Flood 30 High Charity's in total. This month to prepare would SkyNet the chance to regroup and analyze whatever data it received from the battle, whether it be more efficient ways to kill Flood Forms or even gathering, using, and reverse engineering Covenant Technology for its own purposes.

      To put it in Star Trek terms (since I've already already done that math on another channel) a metric ton (1000kg...roughly a Volkswagen Beatle) stationary mass hitting a shield or ship at 1/4 the speed of light (full impulse in Star Trek) would have the same force as eight photon torpedoes.
      The amount of energy needed to fly through an asteroid field would be impossible to produce or store...that's why you see Death Squadron getting trashed in Empire (up to and including the hologram of the Imperial Captain crapping his uniform and ceasing to exist as a rock slams into the bridge.)
      Navigational Deflectors DO exist and are constantly utilized (to keep a pea-sized rock from going through your vessel and killing everyone) but they only face a forward arc and are incapable of stopping large objects. Also, they don't "stop" objects so much as actually DEFLECT them, forcing them onto a vector away from the ship.

    • @digitalis2977
      @digitalis2977 5 років тому

      @coldlizard 2 Cannon fire isn't going to get you very far, no...not any farther than a proton torpedo or concussion missile, anyway.
      Even Gauss or railgun systems would be energy-prohibitive; the amount of energy to accelerate a large enough mass to a high enough velocity would be astronomical, and the weapons would have to be absolutely massive (as in, the entire length of the star destroyer) since there's a finite limit to how fast you can electromagnetically accelerate an object in a given distance; more speed and more mass would REQUIRE more distance, and thus more energy.

      It's powerful by modern naval gunfire standards, but its deliverable joules-to-target is actually Mich lower than the 16 inch guns on our World War 2 battleships. It would wreak havoc on a modern naval vessel (which are made specifically to NOT be hit) but something like an Iowa Class Battleship would happily take your shot on the armor belt then pound the life out of you in the 5-7 minutes it took you to recharge for your second shot.
      And lasers are, by far, the most efficient weapons system for space combat (behind perhaps autocannons, but they have extreme range limitations) specifically because of their energy efficiency and delivery speed.
      A Lazer delivers whatever energy you feed through it on-target, in real time (minus whatever is lost as heat.) A railgun projectile would lose roughly half the expended energy as heat and inertia only to contact a Star Destroyer's 15 meter armor belt.
      A laser beam will reach the surface of the moon in a fraction of a second; the naval railgun can't reach it at all (the projectile can't reach escape velocity) but if it could, it would take about 6 hours to cross that 238,000 or so miles.
      So, a laser is the fastest and most efficient way to deliver the vast majority of any energy expenditure...all without requiring a munition.

      Ray shields can also help with cosmic and solar radiation.
      Particle shields are essential for just about anything without hulls a few inches thick or more. However, these shields wouldn’t magically give whatever ship you’re in the ability to ignore a rock the size of house while moving at a relative speed of a hundred kilometers an hour or more.

    Rogue Squadron (in the books) were particularly fond of focused torpedo strikes in quick salvos. They would have the flight leader 'sync' the torpedos, and then fire a staggered salvo a second or two apart. The first salvo disrupted the shields or overloaded them just long enough for the second to punch through and do damage.
    This is showcased particularly well in 'Isard's Revenge' against one of teh Golan Platforms at the start of the book for how this tactic works. It's implied that the Golan platform was able to at least partially raise shields to some degree when it comes under attack by two Rebel Assault Frigates - but in that small area it was crippled.

    • @Wedgekree
      @Wedgekree 5 років тому

      Then there's things like capital ship scale concussion missiles and torpedos. While not often used (or at least emphasized) a lot of capital ships have them. The Victory Star Destroyer Mk 1 is often showcased as having dozens of capital concussion batteries which provide it's main 'punch'.
      Isard's Revenge has a battle with Home One and escorts and facing off with multiple Star Destroyers in combat formation - including at least two ISD's. Ackbar considers the VSD-1 at the edge of the Imperial formation the greatest danger due to it, despite Home One being several times bigger and more gunned and having massively stronger shields. Likely the missiles are far heavier but in turn slower and not capable of massed, coordinated fire (Ackbar orders A-Wings to intercept a lot of the missiles as a counter) so they can probably be engaged by point defense or lighter escorts.

    solution just use MAC cannons to pound the shields into submission the massive kinetic impact overloads the shields and the second shot pierces the armor clean through due to the sheer velovcity of the projectile, this is why MAC cannons were effective vs covenant ships especially the larger Super MACs and the ones on orbital stations.

    From those scenes of the Ywing and TIE crashing into ISDs from Jedi, both hit the main superstructure, the TIE hitting the bridge itself. I'd wager double shielding could be in place over vulnerable areas like the bridge rather than the entire ship at once to conserve energy and defend the most important bits. Also see the Executor, Pietts panic at the loss of the bridge deflectors and everything that came after.

    Something that gets really overlooked in a lot of Star Wars lore is Thermal Shields. One of the most obvious examples of this is in the episode Cat and Mouse from the Clone Wars TV show. These shields seem to deflect both projectile attacks (the stealth ship's torpedoes) and lasers (the turbolaser barrages coming from the Jedi Cruisers). Just another interesting variable to add to the inconsistencies of shield lore.

    • @eds1942
      @eds1942 5 років тому

      Ray shields. Thermal is heat, and detectable in the infrared which heat seeking warheads would use to find its target. Every power source (and people) generates heat and it’s hard to dissipate in space, making heat seekers ideal since radar can be jammed or otherwise masked. So, if you have good cooling, heat sinks, turn off all unnecessary systems that would generate waste heat and can mask or block your heat emissions with ray shielding or foul the seeker with another heat source, you up your odds of evading detection.

      I can tell you one thing; I'd bet on a B5 Star Fury for almost any fighter vs fighter engagements. Those things aren't quite as fragile as they look, their firepower is impressive (they take on capital ships after all), and the main thing that gives them the edge; maneuverability. They can literally decide which direction they want to go, and which way their want to point, at will. Not even the Vipers from Battlestar Galacitca can match them in that regard. A good pilot can use that to easily out-fly most targets, which is a major advantage.
      The only thing that might cost them is the lack of shields. Many sci-fi fighters still have defensive shielding, which is not to be ignored.

    As I recall, in the old Lucasarts X-Wing games torpedoes could penetrate shields on lower difficulty settings, directly targeting specific starship systems (including shield generators). At high difficulties, starship systems could only be damaged once shields were depleted.
    Also, starfighters themselves rarely seem to be even minimally affected by the presence of shields - Anakin can fly his fighter straight into the Droid Control Ship hangar even as the Naboo squadron are failing to deal any significant damage through its shields, and Poe Dameron can skim a dreadnaught's surface blasting away at its point defence cannons without any turbulence.

    The fact that particle shields wouln't usually be up could lead to a potentially very powerful weapon: a stealth railgun. If you know where a ship will be in eight minutes, you could fire a very cold projectile, designed not to show up on scanners, at it at relativistic speeds. Since it would essentially be invisible and ray shields would almost certainly be down, this could potentially gut a Star Destroyer without fear of retaliation.

    We always hear, at least in the movies, that they are funneling power from other systems, to say the forward shields. Could it be matter of available power? Say the reactors cannot provide 100% power to all critical systems, but they operate at a lower acceptable load, hence the need for the of moving all power to a certain system. This lower load from the other ship systems could lead to a less effective shielding, thus allowing certain munitions to momentarily overload a point on the shielding before it has time to compensate.

  • @IRMentat
    @IRMentat 4 роки тому

    TBH, everytime I hear Star Wars mentions a laser/ray my head-canon auto translates it to “plasma”, so few of their weapons act like coherent light while plasma lines up to it almost perfectly.
    It also applies well to the concept of a ray(plasma) shield, effects of the same type get caught up in the shield, dissipate and deflect while physical objects will get scorched but when built well (especially when slap shielded) they can survive or bypass the effect long enough to apply the intended effect (big badda boom).
    Scraping the paint off your armour/ship is a whole lot less dangerous than taking fire from a shielded target.
    It also explains why most personal shields fail so quickly, the shields themselves would roast the user if the absorbed energy of a blast is allowed to linger for long, better to fail on a planned manner than harm the user.

  • @TurKlack
    @TurKlack 5 років тому

    This is a topic I get very invested in. Taking only the Movies it is apparent that there are different types of Shields, but looking at the Prequels I'd say all Capital Ship Shields stop any kind of weaponry, Energy and Projectile
    - The Space Battle of Naboo - *Naboo Fighters Torpedoes had no affect on the Lucrehulk* -
    At the same time, Hangar Shields are different Shields what so ever. They are not meant for Combat purposes but more to simply prevent any air from leaving the Ship's interior. I guess the Ventilation Shaft of the Death Star has a similar Shield. "But the OT never really explained the Tech of Star wars, nor did the 3 Movies ever show a visible shield."
    - *Pretty much anything except Air can pass through those "Shields". Gungan City Shields are also able to stop Water.* -
    So according to the Prequels, Shields prevent anything from damaging the actual hull of the ship. But I noticed that Shields like those of the Lucrehulk can still be bypassed when an Object moves slowly through it. I assume that the Capital Shields work in a similar way as Water Surface. If you glide through it slowly nothing happens, but if you jump in it from a high point the surface cannot...(Hard time explaining this since I'm no native English speaker)..."open up" fast enough and so the impact will hurt as if you would hit a hard surface.
    Something that personally pisses me off is the excuse of an explanation for why ESB used Walkers instead of Repulsor Tanks. According to an RPG Sourcebook anything that doesn't touch the ground cannot pass through a Shield, which is beyond stupidity. If that's true than the head of the AT-AT which floats in the Air, *hanging* on the body, should not be able to traverse through a Shield.
    Bullshit excuse.
    Man I begin to hate Sourcebooks, they go such a stupid RPG route. : Person A: "Oh you have LAsers well my Energy based shield will protect me.", Person B: "Nuhu, I have Proton torpedoes so your Shield is pretty much nonexistend."
    And only a few Starships use """"Particel Shields"""" Well I guess the Star Wars Galaxy downgraded a lot after the Clone Wars where almost every Ship had Shields that actually PROTECTED the ship (excluding the moments where Plot coincidentally deactivated any Protection, like int every other Sci-Fi Movie)
    The reason for why Torpedoes and missiles can pass through shields is purely a gameplay reason.

    The Autumn class, with its distinct lack of shielding, would lose any fight with shielded ships of a matching weight class. The ISD, despite a shorter range, does have more accurate FTL and with the shield and point defense lasers would be able to reach and kill an Autumn class.

  • @TankHunter678
    @TankHunter678 5 років тому

    Its very likely that missiles and torpedos are given a specialized coating or armor to help enable them punch through ray shields. As you brought up the book talks about how the ray shields disintegrate things, however the question would then become: what is the rate of this? If the rate is not that quick then it may just be that the reason why they work well on turbolasers and other energy weapons is that really there is not much holding that energy together. So when it hits the ray shield it breaks apart and disperses its energy too much to be effective anymore.
    While the torpedo or missile would push through the thin ray shield and maintain enough integrity to bring the warhead against the armor layer underneath the shield, unless it hits the far heavier particle barrier which functions as a form of spaced armor. Detonating the torpedo or missile where it would be ineffective.
    Its a concept I remember seeing in an anime where mages had to go up against drones armed with Anti-Magilink Field generators (not quite outright nullification like true Anti-Magic). The AMF would split apart magic and cause the shots to simply fall apart and disperse their energy uselessly. So one of the characters took to coating her projectiles with a sacrificial barrier, since the AMF would have to eat its way through that before it can break up the actually dangerous part of the shot.

    Scientifically it makes sense for shields to work in two parts, one for energy and one for matter. Energy weapon projectiles have little to no mass so I could see it being quite a bit easier to stop with an energy field than matter. This would correlate with the idea that shields against matter would be far more energy intensive.

    It sounds like ray shields do have particle shield properties with regards to plasma. But I am curious as to whether it can shield against plasma because of the high thermal energy, the fact the plasma is an ionised gas and therefore had charge, or because the particles are of the atomic scale and are small and light enough to be affected.
    I would also like to point out that space is filled with specks of dust that, at high speeds, can tear holes in a ship like it was paper. I therefore say that to have particle shields turned off most of the time is not only unwise, but dangerous when a ship can travel at or beyond the speed of light.

    I know I'm sincerely late to this party, and this is sort of an out of nowhere point to make, but everything described about Star Wars shields and how they work is basically making me wonder how well the UNSC would ACTUALLY do against the Empire in Naval combat. As most Imperial vessels had shields designed to tank Laser shots, the UNSC's MAC cannon volleys would shred them like tissue paper, to say nothing of their missiles that would tear up the survivors. Star Wars Ship weapons also have a much shorter range than the UNSC's accurate range for their weapons. I think a naval battle between the two factions would be a lot more interesting than I think people give the Halo universe credit for.
    Hell, an Autumn Class or even a Marathon class Cruiser could 100% take on an ISD with the MAC volley and Archer missile strategy alone. hell, they could even reverse the strat they usually use to take on the vastly superior shield tech of the Covenant's ships, using archer missile volleys to overwhelm the ISD's shields, followed by a mac shot straight through the ship's now vulnerable hull. Hell, the UNSC's starfighters are also incredibly powerful compared to even the Covenant's starfighters, so UNSC bombers could easily handle shield battering to save on the need for missiles and MACs against smaller or more lightly protected vessels.

    I was under the impression that shields had to be able to block kinetic weapons, or else flying at high speeds would be incredibly dangerous as space/atmospheric debris could severely damage a ship. Weapons like torpedoes were just very powerful and could potentially damage systems even with the shields still up due to their shock wave causing a ripple effect through the shield.

    My money is on the Autumn, true it didn't have shields. But honestly it had better maneuverability as it like many UNSC ships had reactive chemical thrusters that could literally shift a ship from one point to another in a split second. In one engagement with the Covenant, Keyes used these thrusters to avoid incoming tracking plasma torpedoes. In addition it had sizable payload of missiles, including 3 Shiva tactical nukes. The MAC was something special as well, it had been retrofitted with better compaciters and a better automated reload system. When the MAC was overcharged it could fire 3 rounds in quick succession, it was for all intensive purposes a massive Battle Rifle. The MAC wasn't very big, but the ability to fire 3 round bursts definitely gave it a tactical edge against most Covenant ships as first round would nearly cripple shields. Second round had the potential to penetrate, however it didn't it the kinetic energy alone was sufficient to overload and damage shield systems for a time. And the third was a guarantee shot through the hull and possibly clean out the other side. Also as a side note the Autumn was Halcyon class cruiser, they were designed to be durable as the frame was reinforced honey-comb shape that also had the potential to not only be very resilient. But it could also absorb kinetic energy from plasma explosions and missile impacts and redistribute it through out the rest of hull absorb and lessen the impact, it had one of the higher crew survival ratings within the UNSC based on design. (And that was also lightly touched on Halo Fall of Reach novel.)

    I would believe that the rail gun on the Autum or any UNSC ship would be very dangerous for a SW capital ship. The particle shield, as we know, can only take so much damage before they collapse. If I'm thinking of it correctly, the ray shield is over the particle shield meaning that when a MAC round impacts you have it passing through the ray shield and impacting closer to the hull. When that DU round going a good fraction of C hits, besides releasing a boat load of kinetic energy int the particle shield, it's also going to shed good amount of radiation from the impact of the round going that fast. Meaning that even if the shield absorbs a round or two, they're going to be absorbing a lot more harder radiation rays inside their ray shield so it's going to impact the hull past the particle shield. A few MAC rounds to the same shield region from far outside the engagement range of the Star Destroyer's weapons range will break the shield and kill the ship. That overwhelming is the danger snub fighters posed to the Imperials. I have to thing that the energy of a MAC round is as great as a barrage from a squadron of xwings, if not more, and some UNSC ships fired linked double shots. That really brings the pain to a small area.
    Combine that with the possibility that if the UNSC ship is able to surprise the Star Destroyer and fire precisely outside of sensor range, those shots are going right through the ray shields and shredding that ship.

    Eck, we all know that autumn class cruiser is equipped with COILguns not RAILguns just like all UNSC ships.

    If you read the rogue squadron series you will see that capital ships do have shields that effect torpedos. They would make several runs with volleys of Torpedos I order to bring the shields down. Then they could damage the capital ship

    the autumn with its multi-firing mac cannon would shred through the ISD's shields at the offset of the battle. add a bunch of havoc nukes and archer missiles to a ship with no shield, that is asking for trouble. That was a common UNSC strategy, disable a shield, then pepper with missiles. then throw in a bunch of longswords to shoot critical systems. The ISD may win the overall fight, but it will be out of order for a very long time afterward, with a lot of dead crew.

    If you read up on wookiepedia, Legends Concussion Missiles are weak against shielding as they are designed the penetrate the hull then detonate. So I always assumed Proton torps were energy based meaning they were anti Shield/electricity

    that match up is heavy advantage to starwars just because of the shielding, and the particle shielding can be the only one active, saving some power for killing the autumn. this is a ISD after all.

    Depends on the angle from which the Autumn-class attacks from. Its stands a good chance of winning if it attacks from the underside or the rear, but if it attacks from the front then it will still win but take far more damage
