Revolvers for home protection...are you crazy?

  • We discuss the viability of revolvers for home protection in this video.
    People ask me all the time which semi-auto pistol should the get. When I ask some clarifying questions about the intended use of the handgun there are all sorts of answers.
    For many reliability, simplicity of use and moderate recoil tops their list of attributes. As the conversation continues I ask if they've ever considered a revolver. One new shooter said "you must be crazy". He felt, based on reading so called experts on the web, that he had to go with a semi-auto. As the conversation progressed he defined the role for the handgun was home protection and he wanted his wife and older daughters to learn to use the handgun. The gun wouldn't be a carry piece but needed to be easy to use, reliable and not have too much felt recoil.
    We discussed pros and cons of revolvers and semi-auto pistols. Some time later we took his wife and daughter to the range and had them shoot several handguns. His wife and daughter liked the operation and simplicity of the S&W 686 better than anything else. They didn't like the .357 rounds but felt great about different .38 special +p loads. At the end of the session the family felt best about the revolver.
    With practice and training, I'm confident this family was better served by the revolver that a semi-auto.

(We only carried revolvers back then) I carried it until we transitioned to the Glock 22 gen 2. Alot of my buddies traded in their wheelguns for the new fangled Glock. I held on to my 66. Now, many years later my buddies (ones that are still alive or haven't retired) tell me that they wish they had never gotten rid of their old revolvers! For self defense, a revolver is a great choice, short barrel, light weight, point and shoot. Six rounds are enough...how many reports of a running gun battle do you hear about during home invasion? Knowing how to use your weapon of choice makes all the difference, but a revolver takes away the malfunction possibilities of semi-auto.

      Thanks for your perspective. I own several revolvers and think they're a good option for personal protection. However, I have had revolvers lock up... three times (over 30 years). One was out of timing and the other two stoppages were induced by hot .357 ammo causing the projectile in the cartridge to "jump the crimp" thus locking the rotation of the cylinder.

    Before my wife and I moved in together and got married she lived in a bad part of town. I had taken her out shooting a few times but at the time she was not really into shooting semi-autos. She didn’t own a gun yet but she enjoyed shooting my S&W Model 15 and shot it well.
    After a few months of shooting she had a few creepy incidents with a teenage neighbor where he was peeking into her windows all around her apartment and knocking on her doors at all hours of the night. Talks with the parents, landlord, and the police actually made it worse. I let her borrow a revolver of mine and we finally went and bought her her first pistol. We ended up getting her an ugly scratched up S&W Model 10 4” with a pencil barrel. It’s super clean inside and shoots like a dream. Now that we are married and live together she mainly shoots Glocks now (the 26 is her favorite) but that Model 10 still sits in her nightstand and pull home defense duty. Why? She trusts it and shoots it great! The Glock 17 sits next to me but that old beat up beautiful Model 10 still works like a dream after all these years. Revolvers are great and still have a place in the world. They work, they're simple to use compared to semiautomatics, and you have to learn less about them before you can use them effectively. To avid shooters like us semiautos are just as simple to use and maintain as a revolver but you have to look at this from the perspective of someone who doesn't know anything about firearms. My grandmother doesn't care and doesn't want to really learn much about guns but still want protection. Showing her how to hold my Smith & Wesson Model 64, load ammo, eject used casing, and pull the trigger to fire took no time at all. Compare that to teaching her how to use my Walther PPQ took much longer (racking the slide to load a round in the chamber, how to clear malfunctions if you have a failure to feed or the spent casing didn't eject out, how to disassemble the gun, how to load ammo into a mag, how to rack the slide to get rid of the round in the chamber after you drop the mag, and so forth). It got slightly more complicated when I tried to teach my grandmother about hammer fired guns (decockers, engaging and disengaging the safety, how to drop the hammer if you only have a safety, and so forth). With a revolver, you load it, point, and pull the trigger. With a semiauto you can still do that but with a few more steps (and more knowledge of how to fix malfunctions if they ever happen). My grandmother now carries a Ruger LCR as her conceal carry and I gave her my Smith & Wesson Model 64 for home defense if she needed a little more velocity and accuracy. She's gotten pretty great at shooting too for someone who rarely does it and doesn't really care for it.

    A revolver is timeless. What I like about revolvers is you can store One in a closed end holster loaded for 6 months to a year in a drawer or wherever you keep it without having to worry about springs wearing out or losing tension and anyone can operate a revolver a model 10 is a fine piece of equipment in a crisis sells you have to think about is pulling the trigger on point after pointing it at the Target for somebody who isn't really into guns but once a gun around for protection or revolver fits that perfectly. When I lived in Houston back in 96 there was a elderly woman who was wheelchair-bound and was the victim of a home invasion. She wheeled herself into her back bedroom and close the door and shut the light off. When the home invader entered the room she was in she shot him once through the neck and he died on the spot. The paper said she used a 38. Dimes to donuts it was the the Smith & Wesson model 10. This timeless workhorse has served soldiers sailors airmen Marines Coast guardsman security guards and private citizens as a reliable simple effect of self-defense tool since year of Our Lord 1899. Obviously if you were in law enforcement where the average pistol you would encounter on a suspect holds 15 rounds you would want something that at least held 15 rounds. I could ramble on forever but the point is revolvers work beautifully for home defense always have and probably always will.

      I own many handguns revolvers and semi auto, shoot them all the time and familiar with all of them, but I keep a full frame 357 magnum revolver as my home defense gun to grab in a moment's notice, not that I think the revolver would give me the most firepower or is somehow better than any of the semi auto pistols I own, but I feel safer using my revolver in a stressful situation that I would not accidentally shoot myself, since the heavier trigger pull is a type of safety in itself , and there is also less chance of a failure to fire where a bullets primer fails to ignite, I can just pull the trigger to cycle another round which takes a millisecond, The same thing happens with a semi auto and you would have to rack the slide to eject the bad shell which does not take very long, but under extreme duress I might not even think about doing that and just stand there pulling the trigger over and over , You would be surprised how your mind goes blank under such life and death situations, so the less there is to think about in that instant the better.

      @@andrepoghosyan8269 I disagree Sir, granted it's harder for some magazines to wear out more than others, but, one of the signs of magazine on a 1911 is too old to be used is the tension is so bad with the springs that it either causes a double feeds or jams or failures to feed and it's all originating from the worn out spring. another advantage of using a revolver for home defense is it ready at the pull of the trigger without having to make any noise like racking a slide.

      Many stories of loaded revolvers kept in a nightstand for decades and firing perfectly. The magazine spring issue is a matter of much debate but there is no question that short of rust the revolver handles neglect extremely well.

    I love my wheel guns! 32 year LEO here and I started the job with revolvers, and then made the transition to semi-autos for the department sidearm. When I retired I continued to carry my 2" s&w Model 66. Only recently did I switch to a Glock Model 19. Not because it was a better weapon, but it was lighter and had a lower profile. I think the fact that a revolver is so simple, and so easy to check for loading, along with the heavier double action trigger, makes it a really good home defense weapons. I retired from a long career (28 years) in law enforcement. When a homeowner even cranks off one round at a burglar, all the burglar wants to do is be somewhere else. I can't think of one single home invasion/occupied dwelling burglary we had where six shots were not enough. And, we were issued Smith and Wesson revolvers at my first two agencies. And, I really think most people tried to be better shots, when they knew they only had six immediately ready shots. You see a lot of "spray and pray" in shootout now, with fifteen shot autos that every takes for granted now, but didn't happen with revolvers. I think it was Jeff Cooper that said something like, "Missing someone with fifteen shots is not nearly as good as hitting them with one."

Like a classic lever action rifle all you need to run these is some ammo.

    "Best" will always depend on the circumstances under which it will be used, your level of training, and what you are comfortable with. I like both semi-automatics and revolvers, and have shot revolvers extensively in PPC matches which require reloading. That being said, my bedside gun is a semi-automatic with a guide rod laser sight. For me, under nighttime circumstances, and with my night vision not being what it used to be, that is best gun for me bedside. My downstairs daytime choice and carry is a revolver, largely due my training on that platform and the selection of power levels available. When someone says "best", I have to ask "best for what?"

    Here’s my two cents on revolvers. I have owned revolvers as home protection for a long time. I did go from a 38 to a 357. I feel very comfortable with my choice

    • @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC

      Mike, thanks so much for commenting and watching. The 357 magnum is a proven performer. My issue with it has to do with shooting it in the confines of a home or building. Most people are not going to shoot that particular revolver with a suppressor on it. And without a suppressor or your protection the blast and concussion to your ears is really problematic.
      The other issue I have is that most people don’t practice with a 357 round. They practice with 38 special and then think they are going to just perform exceptionally well with around which has more recoil, muzzle blast and concussion.
      Nevertheless, if the user is proficient with their revolver it is certainly an excellent choice as long as they thought about their ears and how loud that round is in an enclosed area.

She knows how to check it for load status, can print a 6" or less 5-shot pattern on a target at 25 feet shooting double action, and knows that all she has to do is point it at the bad guy, pull the trigger, and it WILL go BANG! And she knows that it CANNOT go BANG! unless the trigger is pulled. No slides, no safeties, no magazines. Just a reliable and effective defense tool.

    Let me see, the revolver was king for well over 100 years. The first gun I ever owned was a Colt Diamondback that was Oct. 1978. As a LEO I carried a revolver from 1978 until the mid 1990’s when I was my first issued auto G 23. I came out on top in a gunfight in 1980. Today my arsenal consists of two semi automatic pistols. One a Kimber 1911 and a G36. My next purchases will probably be a G19 or 17.
    My point is that a revolver served me well for many years. I used speed loaders in those days and under great stress I had a fast reload.

    I started law enforcement with a Model 19 6” Smith Wesson and never felt under gunned. One round of .357 Magnum solved most problems. The Remington Model 870 12 gauge was in the car, and since I was the “counter sniper” the SSG Steyer bolt action .308 Win was in the trunk with 5 round detachable magazines. There was a time when semi automatic firearms were not trusted by law enforcement, sans the 1911 .45 ACP. But the 1911 .45 ACP’s were loaded with 230 grain FMJ rounds, only. I transitioned to the H.K. P9S and than when the bolt began to crack because the department issued lead qualification rounds (which is very bad for polygonal barrels) I switched to the S.W. 657. Qualification targets were less accurate than with revolver use. If I could own only three weapons that were non semi automatic, I’d revert back to my roots. There is no doubt shooting incidents in law enforcement cases now have far more rounds fired. Is this bad or good, depends entirely on the individual case. Sometimes you need to adapt to your adversaries weapons and tactics.

      In my profession, we have the notion of a "risk score". That is, the probability that something will happen, times the severity of the actual event occuring.
      I believe that anyone that makes the calculation that they stand a fair chance of needing a gun for home defense, ought to be taking additional measures to mitigate their risks: practice, physical fitness, and safety discipline for non-intruders that also have a reason to be present in your home.
      Most people in my community that have guns at home simply enjoy having and firing guns, but feel that they need "home defense" as a justification to own them. I don't think that justification is needed; just follow the points posted at the beginning of the video.

    I just came across this video, very well done. I have been a Firearms Instructor for over 40 years (USMC - LE - Civilian) and I have often recommended a Revolver to those who wish to have a handgun for home protection / carry but do not want to or have the time to spend a lot of time at the range. They can easily be trained in the safe use of a revolver and not be concerned with "Stove Pipes, Double Feeds, Re-Racking and Magazine Issues". While I do encourage them to shoot as often as possible I also understand their need for protection and simplicity of operation. That being said, I carried a .357 S&W Model 66 Revolver for the first few years of my LE career. I never felt outgunned. To this day my wife has refused my annual gift of a Semi-Auto Handgun (Oh Well) and insists on keeping her S&W Snubnose .38 as her defense gun. But, I will keep buying her a new semi-auto every year just in case she changes her mind!

    High capacity magazines gave the tendency to waste ammo in "spray and pray" and hitting nothing. Most revolvers are easier to aim than semi autos at over 25 yards. Aim well and hit true and have one reload available that probably will not be needed. My first guns were (decades ago) a SW Model 19 and a Colt 1911A1. So I shoot both types and feel perfectly comfortable with a revolver but it a weapon for the really committed to training and marksmanship.

    • @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC
      @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC  3 роки тому

      Thanks for commenting. I agree marksmanship skills are critical. I do take issue with your statement that revolvers are easier to aim at targets +25 yards. I can consistently ring steel at 50 yards with semi-auto pistols. That being said, most armed encounters occur at 7 yards or less. Therefore, I believe that training, practice,and proficiency are the most important factors for anyone who plans to use a firearm for personal protection.

    Model 67 next to my bed. That's the model I was first issued on the job back in the day, and with which I have had the most training.
    I frequently carry a Charter Arms Undercover out and about, too, the same model I bought the day I was sworn in (I still have that one, but carry a different sample from the same time period.)

    At some point, I hope people wake up to the fact that it doesn't have to have a 75 round magazine to be an effective self-defense firearm. I think a lot of it comes from the current competitions that are popular. Individual stages that require crazy high round counts are fun, but they have more in common with video games than real life.

      Excellent point. Hits on target count. Sure it's helpful to have additional ammunition and capacity but the majority of armed encounters are ended with only a few shots.
      Personally, I prefer and carry a semi-auto but I think revolvers are an option for many and shouldn't be discounted.

    I think that especially for home defense, a revolver is a very good choice. You can store it in a loaded condition, and it's easy to use (think about getting woken up in the middle of the night) and reliable. Also, .357 Mag is a great caliber, and you can shoot .38 Spec out of the same gun.

      Thanks for your perspective. A .357 indoors in not what I'd recommend. Too much concussion and blast in an inclosed area. IMHO quality defensive JHP .38 Special ammo would be a better option.

    Great video. Don't forget that you can load a revolver with several types of ammo in the same cylinder, such as alternating LRN and JHP, if penetrating a wall or door is an issue; snake rounds and JHP might be useful in the boonies. An auto might jam with these different rounds, but your revolver will keep chugging along. --Old Guy

Giving someone a tool who does not have the training to use the tool and expecting them to perform well under stress is simply not a realistic expectation in my opinion.

    I bought a Ruger sp101 revolver because I can't rack the slide on a semiautomatic. This is the results of a diving accident that left me partially paralyzed on my right side. I love how this gun shoots and handles the 357 mag rounds just fine. It has a 3" barrel that I forgot to mention. Most of my range time is with the 38 special but still practice with the 357 mag load.

    I keep a model 66 as a house gun and I feel fine about it. Traded my M10, for a PX4.
    *DO NOT* make the mistake of thinking revolvers dont take a crap on you. The incident that really opened my eyes about revolvers, is when I took my 66 out of its typical padded case like everyone uses, loaded it, fired one round and on the second trigger pull, the cylinder *jammed* and would not advance . Not malfunctioned, which is corrected by remedial action, but jammed, as in out of action and requiring maintenance. The issue was a piece of lint from the case padding, that got stuck in the cylinder gap, like a doorstop.

    • @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC
      @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC  3 роки тому

      Important to use good quality ammo. If you're using hot ammo without a crimp the recoil can cause a bullet had to move forward and causing the type of jam you described. I've shot thousands of round through revolvers and never had this happen. However an friend was shooting his snubby .357 ammo and got the lock up you spoke about. He tested other ammo and it never happened again.

      The timing can also be off or a spring,arm or hammer could break I’ve seen lots of revolvers crap out. You are very right about that most people think they are flawless but their jams are much worse than the ones on semi autos.

      I used to work in a gun shop and gun range. I've seen Smith and Wessons lock up when thr ejector rod started backing out and counter rotated against the cylinder. No malfunction clearing drill can fix that. I had to take thr revolver back and careful ask a Co worker to hold the ejector rod while I pushed the cylinder release button and rotate the cylinder until it was freed.

      @@GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC I did. As much as I like shooting semi autos I prefer the reliability and foolproof operation of the revolver. In my youth I carried a Llama .380 1911 style as an off-duty weapon. Had a vent rib, functioned really well, fairly accurate. HOWEVER, during a scuffle someone smacked the front of it just right and it came apart. The slide went back, the barrel bushing twisted and that was all she wrote. I managed to subdue the suspect anyway, but it gave me a distrust of semi autos. Yes, I found all the parts and reassembled it. Worked as well as before but it got relegated to plinking

    My edc is a charter arms 38special undercover...i inherited from my great grandfather back in march of 2000. It was his back up duty weapon for over 25 years! Now its been my edc for almost as long! Before that i carried a 45acp and before that a 9mm. But i think the 38special revolver is the best gun/round there is for the average home/property/self defence. With all the choices of ammo available now. I like that. Also i like the penetration vs over penetration risk of a .38special.
    I plan on carrying this untill i pass it down to my nephew and at that point ill wither carry my other snub nose .357 or ill be dead! Lol.
    Just my thoughts!
    Great video!

    Another good aspect of revolvers for a home gun is you dont have to drop mag/rack slide to empty the gun. You dont have to wory about ND's as much as the transfer bar/hammer block of modern revolvers prohibits the firing pin from contacting the primer unless the trigger is pulled almost all the way. No worry aboot mag springs getting worn by staying compressed for long periods, no worry about bullets being slammed back into cases from repeated racking, no need for alternating mags, etc.

    • @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC
      @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC  9 місяців тому

      Sir, I have a special affinity and appreciation for revolvers. That being said, I want to clear up some points that you raised.
      First of all, if someone has a negligent discharge with a semi automatic, it Hass to do with the fact that they are untrained, ignorant, or apathetic. There is no difficulty ejecting the magazine and operating the slide If one knows how to do it properly.
      Regarding the magazine springs. The magazine spring can be compressed for years and years without issue. What fatigues the springs is unloading and reloading that magazine hundreds of times. If someone is using magazines to this degree a simple maintenance procedure of swapping out springs every year fixes the problem.
      Many years ago I had a friend who had multiple magazines for a 1911 his father had in the Korean War. The magazines have been stored fully loaded for 55 or 60 years. Believe we had seven of them. These were seven, seven round .45 ACP magazines. Everyone of those magazines function flawlessly.
      Personally, I’ve had magazines loaded for 10 years and gone out and shot them and had no issue whatsoever.
      You are 100% correct that it is simple to load and unload a revolver and one never has to worry about a round that has been repeatedly put in and out of a magazine, pressing up against that feed ramp into the chamber. This can cause the projectile to be driven into the casing overtime. This is especially true with low quality ammunition. However, I’ve never had an issue with any carry gun and have not considered this a large concern.
      Also, it’s important to note that revolvers can have stoppages. Very rare, but when shooting a 357 magnum, sometimes the crimp on the shell casing does not hold the projectile in place. during the force of the recoil. This can cause another bullet in its casing to jump the crimp and move forward. This will lock up the cylinder. I personally had this happen and seen it happen twice in different classes over the last 30 years. Again an extremely rare event, but no weapon system is full proof.
      I own a number of revolvers and enjoy them. They absolutely have an application and should not be discounted for personal protection or self-defense. That being said, I don’t think that they are better or worse than a semi automatic pistol. It all comes down to training, practice, and proficiency.
      Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment. I hope you will consider subscribing to the channel.

    One of my EDC guns is a S&W 638, a revolver doesn't need to have a magazine rotation and can be left loaded ready to go and not worry about magazine failure, extraction/ejection issues.

    • @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC
      @GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC  2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comments. magazine spring failure, is a myth. Yes it can happen but is extremely rare. I've shot ammo that has been in a magazine for 30 and 60 years, No problem. Extraction and ejection problems are extremely rare with quality ammo and properly maintained semi-automatics. That being said, revolvers are solid options for personal protection. Plus, I love the beauty and elegance of revolvers made by S&W, Colt and Ruger.
      Bottom line, whatever tool you choose... train and practice until you can safely and proficiently operate that tool under stress. Hope you'll subscribe.

    Several years ago I had a break in. Breaking glass , grabbed my SW 45 and shucked all but 3 rounds. Went out the bedroom door and ran face to face into the intruder. Got off 2 shots ,hit his right ear. Right handed, but fired left handed (because of an injury. ) from the hip. He grabbed the gun and I fired the last round to empty the mag. He got the the gun and tried to shoot me. Pistol whipped me blood everywhere. Kicked me and brook 2 ribs. One does not need 30 rounds, but a short barreled gun with minimal rounds.
