Fantastic picks! The way you describe music will never get old to me. The amount of care and passion that just oozes from your voice when you're talking about the music you love is so inspiring. Also you're totally right about Rolling Girl, I certainly wouldn't be here without it. Thanks for another incredible video!

Not gonna lie: I saw the first five songs, and thought "Is Romeo and Cinderella really going to be the only song I recognize on this list?" 😂 It's just a testament to the fact that: you can be part of the Vocaloid community, and know a section of it is that is radically separate from someone else's experience!
I'm so grateful for your selection and analysis of wowaka's Rolling Girl! The way you describe how all the components fit together is *chef's kiss*.
And ohmygawd, I had such a similar reaction to Donut Hole! As a kid, the cacophony of it threw me off 😖 Hachi really set a standard for 'unique' music in contradiction to the standard happy-go-lucky music! But I have such an appreciation for it as an adult now, and may or may not do a minute choreo to it each time it plays 😝
I really look forward to listening to the songs and producers I didn't recognize on this list 🥰 Congratulations on the subs, ubnubmaster! You deserve it 🥳

I literally screamed ,,I KNEW IT!!!", when the 1st place showed up xDDDDDDDDDDDD
Also, fun fact: iroha quite recently released stems and a original VSQ file of Meltdown and it's suprising how......simple it is. There's actually not that much tuning in there, majority of notes are left untuned and while there is note bending here and there, the overall file is....so simple and bare bones. That was a reality check for sure for me :VVVVVVVVVVV

i actually had the opposite take on donut hole the first time i listened, i LOVED it! to me a lot of vocaloid songs sound the same - city pop, j-rock, electro swing, same old same old - so i'm a sucker for experimental stuff. that's also the reason why iyowa is my second favorite producer (first is harumaki gohan), his music is the most insane and dissonant stuff you'll ever listen to and it STILL manages to sound absolutely amazing and convey great messages and stories. ESPECIALLY you are innocent monster - that song is, in my opinion, his magnum opus. i'd love to see a video about him one day actually, but i'm just rambling at this point so yeah. donut hole good, iyowa good, *experimental music good.*

I will always love Donut Hole. Heck I played it so much my sister developed an ear worm for it, as annoying as it is for her 😂. I love songs that can inspire me to think of a story that can fit the song, and this one was interesting because not only have multiple stories I tied to this song, the most common story I play in my head is one of the most personal, if not the most personal story that exist. Because it involved real events.
I once had a cat named Sky that I saved from getting stuck between a bunch of bamboo that my school grew. Ever since that day we’ve been close. However one morning I went to school and noticed the road was hosed down… she was ran over by one of the school’s vans… the sudden death, the look her lifeless face as she lashed on a bed of grass beside the road… It broke me. It still haunts me to this day. I never got to say good bye.
During this time I was obsessed with Beastars, even before the anime was released I read so much of it, being the very few manga that I read form start to finish. Out of grief I created her as an OC I named Sora, still having the scar, the torn of flesh of her upper left face that I last saw on her lifeless body, just covered in bandages this time and being a burn scar instead. Many times I imagine my persona singing Donut Hole to her, hugging her like we did the day before she died, and finally saying goodbye to her.
Even though her story now is drastically different then her original conception, even having parts of me, both in personality and even in experiences. And even though changed so much from high school, I still imagine myself in my current persona singing this song to her. Hanging out and having fun one last time before saying goodbye to her.

Absolutely love the video and just how much joy it seemed to bring you while making it. Also just so much nostalgia as many of those songs are also on my top list and Donut Hole deserved that first place absolutely.
Maybe nostalgia isn't the right word because I still actively listen to Vocaloid, but this certain set of song really has this "you're 14 years old on an anime convention being confused about Hatsune Miku" feel to it, which is too relatable, only that I was a year younger.
I hope you continue having fun making those videos and those longer formats definitely have an audience! I appreciate the way you're able to talk about the music and the feeling in such a clear way, examining what the song does but also how it makes you feel. It just all works

Great vid! It got me thinking about what my favourite vocaloid songs were, and I'll just mention my top 3 (sad story warning)
    3- Packaged (Livetune).
It was my first, and I was introduced to vocaloid as a whole solely because of a phone cover me and my at the time girlfriend (same person will be mentioned in 2 and 1) at a gaming convention where I stay (rAge).
It also introduced me to the PD series, and the fandom as a whole. I'll never forget the cover (it was the exact photo used on the official program cover art), with a light blue and white tie-dye effect background.
    2- Tengaku (Yuuyu)
It was the first song my girlfriend loved listening together, as we were both going through alot of problems at home (physical and mental abuse from our parents) and when we were together we would rock out to this song and forget about all our problems.
We would even boot up PDF2nd just to listen to the song, and vent to each other about our problems at home. We also did this with Two Breaths Walking (my number 5), but Tengaku was our first go to song.
    1- I'm kinda glad you're evil too (Pinocchio-P)
This came out a few years after one of my girlfriend committed suicide, and every time I hear it I ball out crying, and the song encapsulates all my feelings about it, from the beginning joyful melody/times we shared, to the ending/realisation that she is gone and I am both angry and sad about it. The day before her passing, she gave me a letter, which I still wish I had but my parents burnt it in front of me and told me to get over it.
It also helped me alot at the time, as I went into a deep depression both because of her death, and because of the problems I had at home. Now alone, without my best friend (I had no other friends at the time).
I still listen to it every year around her birthday, and the time of her passing as a "remember me by".
To whoever read this in full, Thank you. I hope you enjoy your day/night!

I think picking a top 10 is super difficult yet this list is very solid especially with hachi's donut hole being such a classic. Good job with the video and congrats on making so far! personally i couldn't really ever decide on a general top 10 vocaloid song list but I can definitely say that Leia by Yuyoyuyppe is my favorite vocaloid song by far. The way Yuyoyuppe's post-rock guitar riths works so well with his tuning of megurine luka is just so good. Honestly i don't see Yuyoyuppe really be discussed as much as other vocaloid artists. His work with his albums like draw and solitude freak are what got me into vocaloid especially with the stories he tells with his music's lyrics and the emotion he can bring out of vocaloid like megurine luka and hatsune miku is absolutely crazy. Once again, a really solid video and i hope to see more videos from you!

is it just me or can I not get away from the way you talk about vocaloid and just music in general. As a very musical person myself and someone who got into vocaloid only in the past two and a half years it's very easy to get caught up in your own perspective of a song, which is why I love it when you discuss your perspective and opinion on these songs (some of which on this list I have never heard of before but that's just part of being comparatively new to the whole thing I guess lol). I’d love it if you made a video about the seven deadly sins by mothy with a main focus on Daughter of Evil/Servant of evil. I just feel like those two songs were so iconic at the time and introduced a lot of people (especially English speaking people) to vocaloid, so I was curious to hear your analysis of it and why it was so big at the time. Also it’s so cool that the daughter of evil series is a series within a series (seven deadly sins)!

Honestly, if I was a producer and made such a masterpiece like Meltdown, I’d be pretty satisfied with never writing another song ever again /hj
Jokes aside, lovely video as usual! Your description of Romeo and Cinderella caught me off guard in such an emotional way. I feel like you totally nailed how I’ve felt about the song but not being able to put my finger on why. As a teenager coming-of-age it really helped me getting a much more healthy and not as taboo view of sex and love. I feel like the song deserves more recognition for that message, not just being memed for being a ”dirty” song in disguise.

This is the first comment I write on your channel, but I've watched your other videos and really enjoyed them, so I thought this would be the moment to finally stop being a silent viewer and tell you how much I appreciate your videos.
First of all, congratulations for this unique follower milestone! I feel confident that you will continue to grow; your videos are a real treat for anyone even remotely interested in Vocaloid or trying to understand why it is so beloved.
The fact that there's several songs in your top that I haven't even listened to once reminds me of how big the community is, and of how much I have yet to discover, even years after. I won't comment on your top for this reason, because I lack the knowledge to second your opinions or disagree. That being said, I loved hearing your explanations for every song you chose in your top! It's especially interesting to hear from someone who has been listening to Vocaloid songs for so long and is so well-versed in its history. Hachi and wowaka being in the top 3 definitely didn't surprise me, but the reasons you highlighted make it so evident why they absolutely deserve this spot.
As a casual-ish Vocaloid fan who really enjoys the songs being created these days, I will say though that I would love to see you make a top with songs from the past years only. The community has evolved and some big names have disappeared, but there are also new creators and names that continue to surprise and evolve. I think it would be an interesting way to put the spotlight on some newer gems that people might not know of, when so many of the iconic songs of Vocaloid are already over ten years old.
Thank you for this video!! :)

I don't really recall what vocaloid song sticks out from first joining the community but I think my one that remains unchanged is bad end night. I definitely found that early and remember watching many mmds and dance covers of it
But over time my list of special songs has grown mostly because of watching mirai but some of them are close to my heart because of physically going to miku expo europe like music like magic, lucky orb, sharing the world, roki, cybernetic, hyper reality show
Yes not all of them were first performed at miku expo and I'd seen them via youtube but seeing them live made them special for me

  • @nathanielscreativecollecti6392

I got into Vocaloid from the game Stepmania. At first I considered it to be a mishmash of same sounding "helium" infused songs. The first one that really struck me as something different was Sand Planet and Rolling Girl. Then I started to notice significant differences between each artist and how they worked with the Vocaloids. There really is a large number of genres within Vocaloid and I've come to appreciate a lot of them. I have my favorite artists, the late Wowaka, Ryo, and any song with IA especially those from Jin. Thanks to you I've become more appreciative of the scene as a whole!

I don't really enjoy the song anymore but it does sit somewhere special in my heart

The way you explain Vocaloid songs really has a grasp on me because I relate to that feeling of nostalgia so well. There really is something about those older Vocaloid tracks that gives such a feeling that’s unexplainable. I really wish that Vocaloid was more mainstream. I think one of the main reasons we don’t get tracks often like these anymore is because the lack of recognition Vocaloid as a whole gets. Artists leave the scene because they can’t provide off Vocaloid. Some outstanding tracks are left in the dust due to more recognized songs overshadowing them. I really hope someday Vocaloid is recognized and loved more again. I think it would bring more amazing tracks and provide that recognition producers deserved.

it's mainstream in japan i think, but in the west it's... *pretty* obscure

    • @ubnubmaster
      @ubnubmaster  Рік тому +2

I definitively agree with Amethyst there about it being mainstream in Japan, honestly it's hard to escape in places like Akihabara, arcades, etc. But I 100% agree with your feelings here. I think the problem is that we have a tendency to push producers to the back and focus more on the idols. It makes it harder for producers to project themselves and be recognized for their work

    • @amethyst4578
      @amethyst4578 Рік тому

@@ubnubmaster yeah, people are like "man im so glad we're past the point of crediting the vocaloids instead of the producers, we were so young and immature back then!!" but no, those kids making slow/reverb videos and the like do it all the time and i think a lot of regular fans still subconsciously do it.
also, i think this is just me, but it kinda feels weird to think that vocaloid is so mainstream in japan - like, it almost feels *wrong.* maybe it's because i'm from a place where it's obscure, maybe it's because all the styles are so unique (well, *most* of them...) and all western pop kinda sounds the same, maybe it's because it was obscure in both places in the past... it's probably a mix of all of them. this can come out like i'm gatekeeping or something but it's been on my mind for a while and i just had to get it out. i think the main thing that bothers me is that it makes the music feel less genuine, like it's just for popularity or money, even though that's not the case most of the time.

Thank you so very much for posting this list. I'm still really new to vocaloid & will be sure to check out the songs & the producers you've mentioned here, along with the other stuff you've posted on your channel.
One thing I seem to keep seeing is that all the really important & ground breaking vocaloid stuff seems to only center on the early 2000s to no later than early mid-2010s.
Which forces me to ask a very difficult question.
Where is the material from the mid-2010s to today? Has vocaloid died out over the past 17 years or so? I know a lot of the classic producers have retired from vocaloid, but I know some of them must not have &, even more important, where is the new talent? I mean, 17 years is a long time, especially in a field as fast paced as music.
If vocaloid still exists as a viable art form, would you please consider doing a video on what's been going on in Vocaloid during this last decade & a half? I know I can't be the only one wanting to know this stuff.
Haruhi bless you & keep up the great work! I've got old vocaloid tracks to catch up on! 😎

I don't really know if the song I'm going to talk about was popular or not (but judging by people I talked with, it was totally unknown), but Powapowa's „Q” would totally fit into this list. I’m still fascinated by vocaloid, but I’m really interested in what AI is going to mean to vocaloid. To me one of the major drawbacks to vocaloid is that unlike a lot of software, actual tutorials on how to use it are pretty slight. It’s almost a figure it out on your own situation, when the program could have used a wide range of how to’s comparable to what one can find for say, Photoshop, or FL Studio. Had that been the case I think we’d have seen many more users adopt the program and do stuff with it. Now the AI is here, I don’t see the user base getting any larger.

@@ubnubmaster you seem to know a lot about music but since i know nothing maybe im wrong and this might be possible but itd be awesome to see you make a few tutorial style vids surrounding music production. perhaps an introduction into music theory and another navigating voicebanks or production software. compared to you im so much of a casual vocaloid enjoyer despite it basically being the only style i listen to. i cant really put into words why i love it beyond the appealing premis of anyone can produce, and unique, stylistically cohesive and artistically appealing songs and brands individual artists have developed. i also only listen to it through youtube so i never really see the side/culture of the vocaloid landscape/community but the way you talk about it seems so interesting. the main barrier is navigating a forigne website, that being nico nico and breaking through the language barrier since eng translations are often garbage or non existant. ive been wanting to seriously study japaense for a while and although i know a little bit now might be the time to start consistently studying a small amount each day. pair that with a bit of vocaloid/music production and the potential overlap of drawing skills and it could be a real nice set of complimenting hobbies to get through college

The first time I saw this in my recommendations when I was 11, I was creeped out! The gross looking picture of Gumi with the bold text just saying *DONUT HOLE* combined with somebody going OH, OH, OH, made me hate it to an infuriating degree. I just wanted to go back to Matryoshka.
2 years later and... Now it's my favorite song. Like, ever.
Mainly because I relate to both meanings of the song.
I have had many family members die, and now I can barely remember them.
But, I have also completely changed into a different person. Ever since I turned 13, I cannot even relate to the small portions of my past self the I CAN even remember. It's not like I've forgot what's happened for the past 12 years before now, it's just that... I have forgotten who I was almost completely before I turned 13...
