Pinned comment! One thing I neglected to mention was the Octo Samurai boss from Splatoon 2. It’s a bit of an oddity among the Octarians, appearing mostly like a severed-tentacle Octarian but with a humanoid body. Notably, we actually DO see its soul upon splatting it and we even see it respawn using a spawn point. This is further evidence that all Octarians have souls, but it still isn’t clear why only the Samurai and Octolings can respawn (thanks to UndeadButStillHasAHead for bringing this to my attention!)
It's This, And The Science behind The Hypno Shades. And What Happened With Callie's Hypno Shades, After that Boss Fight. It's a Science I'm Curious about, And a Story I'm Creatively Drived to Explore
CoD: we're a mature series and don't hold anything back A squid paintball game: *memory wiping and lobotimization of abducted child soldiers with the blended remains of others in order to commit mass eugenics across the entire post-humwn planet*
22:36 I have my own theory on this as well: the octarians were simply the easiest to convince. All it would take would be the promise of the surface and I’m sure the vast majority of octarians would at least be intrigued enough to give the whole deal a chance, by which point it would already be too late to back out.
I also agree! I would also think that the Octarians are… more easily accessible (?) than the inklings, because after fleeing the army, a lot of them might end up underground in the Deepsea Metro… maybe? Inklings would probably have no reason to end up down there. Since Octolings have lived underground their whole lives, they would want to see the surface like you said. Or maybe Kamabo Co captures octarians that have escaped from the army, because it says, in the Octo expansion opening “An Octopus, unaware that dawn will bring capture, Rests within a trap” Maybe Kamabo Co set up traps to capture octarians?
@@aiko_theOcto I really doubt that line is referring to literal traps, and instead is moreso referencing that fact that Agent 8 (and likely most of the other octarians) were bound to end up in the deep sea metro and manipulated by Kamabo Co. Their fates are almost inevitable. Metaphorically trapped.
I feel like it's more a case of two different responses to a large scale traumatic event, basically the same concept as generational trauma. The Octolings responded to that shared trauma by enforcing and rewarding individual sacrifice for the collective greater good and conformity to give themselves purpose as a community, while the Inklings focused on individual freedom, expression and creativity in their society that also comes with the pitfalls of vanity, excess and violence being attributed to them as a society. Neither are 'correct' responses to that shared trauma, BUT by coming together they'd be able to balance both sides of the coin and keep each other in check. The most significant character development has only been possible when Octolings and Inklings work together and collaborate to build a future that works for everyone, I feel like Comander Tartar knew it'd be easier to achieve a 'clean slate' if they were divided
24:37 maybe since Agent 3 was knocked unconscious, their mind was like “yo wtf is going on right now” and so it latched on the first coherent thoughts it could- Tartar’s via the blended ink.
I had a similar thought, since they’re unconscious, the blended ink had no resistance against controlling agent 3, though your explanation kinda elaborates on this.
Another possibility could be that the blended ink is able to control them but not fully. It's basically a Narmer Veil if you've played Warframe. It's able to control minds and warp memories, but it doesn't rewire the soul
@@Kruppuchino That idea fits with the battle's theme as well. Since we know that music is massively important to Splatoon's storytelling, Splattack (Octo) being a corrupted version of the first game's theme could represent Agent 3's memories being controlled and warped by Tartar's influence, but he has a very loose grip that seems to cut in and out like a faulty wireless connection. The short cut-ins of DJ Octavio's themes could imply that Tartar actually manages to gain full control for a moment each at most, only to immediately lose it seeing as the melody of Splattack plays near unbroken afterwards. Maybe it could even mean Agent 3 wasn't taking the fight as seriously as possible, even while brainwashed, or else a boss theme from their memories would have played instead.
One thing to note, is that Acht is playable in tableturf battle. This obviously shows that they are living on the surface now, but it also shows that the sanitized skin and ink color does not go away, even with memories restored. This could mean that the dummy information is still in there and might be there permanently even when sanitization is "Cured."
I see it more as like... permanent skin damage, I guess? I don't think there's any trace of Sanitization left in Acht's mind, but their body is essentially scarred from the procedure. Acht's eyes also return to normal, and we don't know that they can't change ink color. I think they're mostly ok
@@apersonowo307since inkling skin is moreso fashion than a race type of thing, most surface citizens probably see acht with green skin and think they must have some weird sense of style
@@mouthwaterin "Inklings possess the ability to change the color of their skin and eyes at will, with the Splatlandian Inklings and Octolings also having the ability to have multicolored eyes. Skin color is not limited to human-like ones, Keaton of Wet Floor has turquoise skin, and Baker of C-Side has gray skin." - the Inkling page on the Splatoon wiki, their source for this is the Splatoon 2 direct. i was too lazy to watch all 26 minutes of it to see if I could find where they say inklings change their skin tone for fashion
You say "decision to become sanitized", but "not opposed" doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as "choosing to". It's a slight yet important difference. Like if someone offered me Super Mario Party, I wouldn't be opposed to having it given to me, but I'm not going to go out of my way to ask for it or buy it.
That's fair! There's a lot of room for interpretation when it comes to Acht's motives. It's not like I think the idea of Sanitization had them jumping for joy, but their apathy toward the whole situation is unique and says a lot about their state of mind in the Octarian domes. I just think it's important to acknowledge that they were aware of the potential consequences and still went through with it
@@alphavonthraxus3739 If you don't oppose something you're making the decision of letting it happen, you might not want to take responsibility, in fact most people don't, for it but the fact is you choose it.
i've personally always thought that agent 3's "sanitization" was different than the usual process rather than the whole ripping out and replacing memories thing, tartar just pumped the unconscious agent with enough of the blended ooze to "overwrite" or "drown out" their will, to the point that it was literally oozing out of their head and the reason that agent 3 goes down in the end is because the supply tartar pumped into them had run dry after all the specials, shooting, dodgerolls, and reviving after a splat maybe even a bit of fighting from within after said splat briefly woke up 3's little ghost and gave it a moment without the blended ink but that's just headcanon brain having fun
21:37 alright before I continue watching, here’s my theory. By sanitizing the subject before the tests, Kamobo Co removes outside variables. No memories means no outside information can help any test subjects; they bring to each test only what they themselves can understand and do. Only their own inferences and conclusions can be drawn from each test, rather than basing it off of whatever they might’ve known prior to becoming a test subject. Maybe that’s why memcakes are the reward for each test; the memories contained within a given memcake will no longer be relevant in future tests, so it’s used as a reward and therefore an incentive for the subject to press onward.
I have to say that as sad as it is, I really like the detail that while order is in control, memories are being lost forever. In game there’s no consequences to taking a long time but every moment eight delays is a moment in time someone doesn’t get back. I also like that no matter how fast you go, you can’t prevent something from being lost. It feels more realistic. A great battle was fought and won but there were prices. Our heroes struggled and couldn’t save it all. I also like that what was lost were memories. Real people loose memories all the time. Depending on the memory it can be completely unnoticeable or absolutely devastating. Like an arm or a leg (for us humans at least) you can never get them back exactly the way they were, but we can make new ones that are also precious.
Funny that it’s called Kamabo Corporation (which would be shortened to Kamabo(C/K)o., with コ being ko/co in Japanese), as Kamaboko is the name of a Japanese fish/seafood cake made from blended/minced seafood products, which is what the corporation’s end goal was. Also are often formed into shapes and the texture is similar to that of the mem cakes seen in the octo expansion and side-order
Oh so THIS is why my friends like splatoon so much. it's a complex and entertaining story about a computer misinterpreting something and creating eugenics: marine organism edition, and said marine organisms kicking the robot eugenicist's metal loser behind, looking totally rad and saving their friends in the process! very epic. I knew nothing about splatoon lore before watching this video. This is currently my only source of information on this. great vid!
24:17 Interestingly enough, I do think it's confirmed tartar has blended ink inside of it. When he spits out the cq-80 if you look closely you can see green ink droplets come out of the telephones speaker
Despite replaying Octo Expansion a million times I have actually never noticed that, but I just checked and you're right! I guess he's just full of that stuff. Weird!
I thought there were 3 attempts at genocide in this game. But sanitization is one I forgot about. And it’s also successful unlike grizz, order, and tartar’s goop gun. Tartar and grizz might even be considered ecocide. Man what is wrong with splatoon.
Villains have eugenics nonsensical philosophies. The Inklings (or Octolings) aren't good enough, start over (or just dominate the other side in Octavian's case) because they're don't deserve their lives.
@@icecreamchief5417 I wouldn't say DJ Octavio was necessarily a villain, and instead simply the opponent. The Octarians stole the Great Zapfish because they were struggling and didn't have enough electricity to power their 'homes'. I believe that Callie was brainwashed to become a sort of one-squid pep rally to lift the Octarian army's spirits.
I mean order tecnically wasn't genocide, like idk if making a grayscaled the amazing digital circus where everyone that has a certain phone model gets trapped inside it forever counts as genocide. Unrelated but this just made me remember that one spy kids movie where the villain made a videogame that trapped people that played it inside of it Insert obligatory "if i had a nickel for every piece of media that had an evil villain trying to trap people forever inside their videogame, which eventually got stopped by some person who barely managed to escape the game's influence i'd have 3 nickels which isnt a lot but it's weird that it happened thrice" (i know TADC's story isnt over yet just let me have this)
About the severed tentacle Octarians, I have what might be a good -game- theory for them: In real life Octopi, the tentacles actually all contain their own little "mini brains" - these allow the tentacles to act with so much seemingly independent intelligence at the same time and are a good part for how Octopi can do what they can with their tentacles. Going with this train of thought (which I hope is becoming more obvious what Im getting at), it is likely that the Sanitized Octoling Shavings/Severed Tentacle Octolings just came from a sanitized version of the source material that normal Octoling shavings come from - as in, they got sanitized traditionally then the Shavings were cut off to be independant. It is also why they have no souls/cant respaw n - their like a severed limb, not an original mind/body of their own. This would then suggest that the Octo Samurai is actually a more traditional form or some other variant of Octoling This theory also e plains alot about their behavior and I think might fit with the Octoling society as far as I am aware - actual octopi can regrow severed tentacles, so if the same transfers this logic to octolings they can mass produce/mass replace these guys by just clipping them off of donor octolings. Considering iirc Octoling society is alot rougher and resources are more limited, having soldiers you can print, discard, and replace this efficiently is really useful and would further e plain the difference in their treatment compared to say, actual Octoling units. It would also e plain why they seem so. . .simple minded: the Shavings quite literally have simpler brains. It would also e plain why as far as I can recall we never see them actually walking on their own - they're always plugged into some sort of technology they then manipulate via I assume some sort of cybernetic interlink which is plugged into their stump. It would also further separate them from the Samurai, who acts alot like a more traditional Octoling in many ways and can even respawn. But hey thats just a theory a game theory! Thanks for reading
@@starsilverinfinity A lot of your ideas about normal Octarians are pretty much confirmed! The Splatoon 1 artbook said that non-Octoling Octarians are produced by severing tentacles, and that they are more primitive/ less intelligent than Octolings. Pretty sure the machines they drive around on are just weapons, though. We can see them standing on top, so they aren’t “plugged in,” just controlling them with a steering stick. When it comes to Sanitization, I personally think they would be severed before they are Sanitzied. Otherwise I’m not sure what would be happening to the Octotroopers in the Belly Phase. Not to mention the Haikara Walker art showing unsanitized Octotroopers. The idea of being able to mass-produce soldiers makes sense from Octavio’s perspective, but it doesn’t really like up with what we see happening in Kamabo
@@TheCosmicCloud Interesting - also silly me, I just had a "eureka" moment and forgot to check on some art first before typing (its been a bit since ive touched Splatoon and I had been binging on darker cyberpunk stuff prior, but videos like yours keep me afloat and interested with 'toon). As for the Octotroopers. . .hrm, well I suppose there is more plotting and thinking to be done clearly. Maybe they just dont have a soul as strong as others do - their just slivers, not full blown originals. So when you kill them the soul doesnt really become visible separating out of the ink, but there is still something for the process ot latch onto? Abit like how in. . .Undertale (oh no Im doing it too) boss monster souls remain for abit after they die but normal monsters tend to just vaporize immediately I dunno, I will now have to jump down the rabbit hole of thinking about this lol
I’m fairly confident that the sanitization process, specifically the role of the blended ink, is different than how you’ve theorized here. Here’s my best guess of the process: First, the subject’s memories are removed to create mem cakes. This step either does not require blended ink, or uses a watered-down version (possibly evidenced by the translucence and presence of bubbles in the fluid Eight first appears in. Ink is rater opaque, and thick enough that air bubbles would have a significantly harder time moving through it compared to how it’s portrayed, but a solution of the ink and other chemicals may have similar attributes). Next, the subjects are injected with “dummy information.” I believe this information is contained within the ink, and can be injected in two ways: Total submersion for an extended period of time (as in the Belly Phase), or direct injection into the target (likely what the IV bags are for). I suspect the second option was the first one devised, as it likely requires less ink, which would have been in short supply at the outset, and the first method was later developed to increase mass production capacity. I believe that Eight went through only the first process, and Agent 3 only went through the second. Eight’s memories were removed, but they did not become subservient to Tartar and retained their original skin tone. Three likely was given an injection of blended ink, then had a small amount of it attached to them. Three retained their memories after they were removed from Tartar’s control, but lost control of themselves and began showing signs of physical changes, which likely would have become more pronounced had the contact been extended. A lot of this is speculation, but I think it answers a few more questions about the process and closes a few holes. Though if anyone has any counterpoints I’d be interested to read them.
You make a good point that the substance we see Eight submerged in doesn't really look like ink, but I drew that connection because we know Eight was Sanitized and we know Sanitization involves being covered in ink. Despite appearances, I can't think of why the Belly Phase would use a different process than whatever happened to Eight. It seems needlessly complicated to me (from a worldbuilding/ lore perspective) to have subjects submerged in some kind of chemical mixture AND blended ink. It also seems odd to me that there would be 2 different ways to implant dummy information. I see Agent 3 as an exception. The blended ink was used to "hijack" their brain almost like a parasite. It wasn't a true takeover of their body, as they were still alive. I don't think anyone else was Sanitized this way. Obviously we won't have a perfect explanation until Nintendo gives us one, but I feel more comfortable using the information we have been told in interviews/ the Dev Diaries and applying that to what we see in the game rather than using environmental details and working backwards. Marina specifically describing injection as the step AFTER Sanitization is what gives me confidence in my own understanding. There are some things that don't quite add up, but that's just how it is with Nintendo sometimes unfortunately Thanks for sharing your thoughts, though! It's very interesting to hear everyone's interpretations
One additional possibility for Eight being the first test subject for Project Memverse is that it was _significantly_ easier for their memories to be returned. After all, during the course of Octo Expansion they had gathered a good quantity of their Mem Cakes already, and could have easily supplied them to Marina.
i just wanna shoutout the title cards, i love the detail of the pink ink going green in the first few but then as soon as the memverse, a way to fix it, comes up, the titles start out green and then go back to pink. i thought that was a really neat detail :V
Finally a video about sanitazation 😭🙏 I feel like the community has been falling a little flat lately in terms of theories and lore analysis I feel like it would be so cool if you’d be able to analyze the themes of Deaf!sh’s songs that she produced for tartar, as most seem to have names with meaning. I wonder if they could portray how she or other octarians felt when they were sanitized
I've always liked the idea that Dedf1sh's songs were related to Sanitization, but I don't know how much there really is to analyze. It's a cool thought, but it doesn't tell us much except for possibly their own state of mind while Sanitized
I could be wrong here, but I vaguely remember rassicas going over a dev interview where the devs stated something along the lines of "the song names are meant to capture the overall feeling of the song itself"
19:15 I think that it’s good to assume that octarians, opposed to octolings, have only a PART of a soul, since they’re made from cut-off tentacles. They only might have that tentacle part of the soul inside, which is why they’d be able to be sanitized, and could also be the reason there’s more octarians than octolings in OE since they might be EASIER to brainwash and sanitize.
I don't think we should assume that without more evidence. Splitting souls seems like it would kinda be a big deal, and we don't really know enough about how souls are even formed. I honestly think there are more sanitized octotroopers simply because there are more normal octotroopers
@@TheCosmicCloud Well in real-life octopi have a "mini-brain" in every tentacle...them only having one brain as opposed to the octolings having four tentacles...sure they aren't as long as real life octopi tentacles, but they could still function as an extension of their brains
@@audreyholmes9751 Yes, and I think that was the logic behind Octotroopers being made from severed tentacles. The thing is, we don’t quite know the relationship between brains and souls. There very well may be a connection, especially considering souls appear to contain memory, but I don’t think they are completely synonymous
Excellent video!!! A few years back I wanted to make a video trying to explain sanitization, but it ended up being too daunting of a topic with too much unclear information and it got set aside.... and I'm glad I didn't get around to it, because some of the conclusions I came to about sanitization in that draft were proven *very* wrong in Side Order. (As you already know cosmic, when you asked me about the topic of sanitization a few months back) I wanted to revisit the topic with the new info from Side Order. But I've had too much on my plate and didn't very far. Anyways, the Splatoon community REALLY needed a video like this, and I think you blew this topic out of the water! Very cohesive and well put together. I like the "speculation" and "canon" disclaimers being on screen, I don't know how many times I've come across someone misremembering something I said was speculation in a video and then spread it around as fact. I might have to do that too. Also, I don't know if I would've thought to readdress the "partial sanitization" misconception, but I'm really glad you did, didn't realize how widespread it still was 😔 I think one thing that would've been worth addressing is....In the fifth diary entry, Marina mentions that Cuttlefish has mem cakes too...? Did Kamabo seriously take some of his memories and we just didn't know about it until now? Does Cuttlefish's sheer willpower and him probably being too old to be fit to be a test subject have anything to do with how he seems... normal? Was it that when he was invited into the blender alongside 8, that was Tartar deeming him worthy to be part of his primordial ooze? IDK, I've seen a lot of confusion about this piece of info and I don't have an answer for it either, but it would be interesting to see your take on it. anyway again, 888/10 video, and thanks for being thorough with the credits! I'm gonna recommend others to watch this.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! There's definitely a lot of stuff that's only half explained by Nintendo and it was difficult to put it all together in a way that felt comprehensible. Glad to see speculation and other takes in the comments because there are still plenty of things with no true answer. I mostly just wanted to provide a point of reference with all the facts we know for sure so that people weren't making theories and headcanons based on outdated or incorrect information. Hopefully I was able to achieve that! I'll be honest, I have no idea what to make of Cuttlefish having Mem Cakes. We barely even know how Eight was Sanitized. Based on my own understanding, it's possible that his memories were extracted by Kamabo, but then... why didn't he have amnesia? How did he get his mem cakes back? I have literally zero clue, and if I did address it in the video, it would just be me saying I have zero clue lmao Is it possible that Marina just meant she got Eight's Mem Cakes from "Eight and Cuttlefish" meaning they were both holding on to Eight's? I'm not sure how it reads in the Japanese version, but that would be a simpler explanation. I'm guessing that isn't the case if you're asking though lol It is interesting that Tartar doesn't stop Cuttlefish from entering the blender despite him not collecting the four Thangs, but there are other signs of Tartar's plan being imperfect. For example, we can see an Octoball floating around in the NILS Statue weapon, which would seem to imply that an Octoball managed to assemble the blender? Or somehow managed to fall in to the primordial ooze without getting blended? It's weird. It's almost like Tartar doesn't even perceive the people "beneath" it. But also it does sometimes tldr the inner machinations of Craig are an enigma, but thanks for watching & thanks for all the translation work that even made this video possible!
@@TheCosmicCloud I feel like cuttlefishes inclusion in the blended ooze could have been a monumental oversight on Tar Tar's part seeing how... Still set he is in his old ways... It could have tainted that batch of ooze. But I'm sure the immensely intelligent super computer Ai knew exactly who Cuttlefish was- seeing how he was the commanding officer of the squid army- so he likely just disregarded his sorta... Race bias, and solely wanted that strong will for his new ooze creations.
Imo tartar saw captain cuttlefishs memorys of the war and deemed him worthy over those. The guys a war hero, if anyone's gonna get a free pass to the blender it'd be him.
thanks for compiling this video! now i can use this to piss people off when i say "splatoon is cephalopod cyberpunk 2077 and mikoshi is real in splatoon"
11:40 I always seen that little ghost form as their inkless true form. Basically when you get shot with enemy ink, you absorb it and are force to either convert it to your color which take a short time or to eject all your ink out, leaving you in that floating form to find those ink spawn point and recover
If you think about it . . . every villian we've faced so far has been fighting against their will, other than a few bosses (Shiver, Frye, Big man, Octavio, TarTar, and Order) They were all forced to do this. Every main villian has manipulated mind control to get what they want. In other words, all of the main villians have tried to get a blank perfect world. THEY TRIED TO WIPE OUT US NERDS.
i've always thought that sanitization was the actual process of stripping the memories and thoughts away, and the injection of the dummy info is why sanitized octolings are green. this also explains (to me) why despite being sanitized, eight isnt green. they weren't injected with the dummy info.
Yesss, exactly what I was thinking. Not only does it solve a hole in that part of the lore, but the wording makes more sense too. Sanitize means to clean; so, to clean out their memories. Replacing their memories comes after. Neither 3 or 8 likely were injected imo
18:33 i believe that instead of it being instantaneous the color change takes time and can be reversed if not fully completed, emphasized by the green complexions shown on the male and female models of the characters
It makes sense that it wouldn't be instant, but it seems counterintuitive to me that the 2nd step (injection) would cause the color change rather than being covered in ink. I'm not even sure if the characters are turning green in the character creation screen, I think it's just the lighting
Honestly, the reason why video games mean so much to me is because of the story and imagination it tells. One of the most important parts of Splatoon to me is the story, and this video couldn’t have made me happier. Thanks for dedicating your time to this video Cosmic, you are appreciated.
I think you should mention the whole reason Acht is even in side order. They chose to, they wanted to follow a voice that imprinted on them, Pearls. After the final battle of Octo expansion, I think Pearl’s voice during the killer wail is what brought back some of the sanitized octarians.
I cannot be the only one who feels like there’s a parallel between sanitation and being squipped in be more chill, specifically with acht. They retained some semblance of themselves even with being fully sanitized. Conclusion, Tartatr singing pitiful children’s and acht in Michal in the bathroom would go hard. Great vid :>
I was specifically looking for information about sanitization and turns out 11 hours ago someone made the best possible summary about literally the whole thing… thank youuuu
Bro this is so good it puts up so much detail and it helps people who have never really played side order or Octo expansion it truly explains what is happening throughout time
i would say hijacking agent 3 without removing the memories would be because it was a last ditch effort on tartar’s part, as it didnt have time to remove them so it merely just hijacked the mind.
Fantastic video! Sanitization has been a part of the lore that i never really understood but your video helped greatly! Its also great to get more theories so thanks for that too.
@@milliefleuroh hey Millie! Back on the Splatoon kick and the sanitization stuff is my favorite! I made a sanitized Inkling OC for MK8Deluxe and she’s my current hyperfixation lol
Why do I get the feeling that if the greater inkling/octoling society knew about Sanitising they would try to use it to get cool green and blue tentacles, that just feels in character to me
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO !!!! 😭😭😭 Having never played any other entry than Splatoon 3 I didn't really understand everything that was going on with Sanitization but I really wanted to do I'll make sure to enjoy this video, as well as watching it again from time to time 😊
Octoling expansion is what got me to actually look at splatoon. Before that I just thought it was just exactly how it looked, a shooter with paint. I didn’t know or understand much of what I was watching but it was so cool to se streamers play it and die over and over lol. Good vid 👍 now I know that I was watching the the crumbling of an entire species. Neat
another thing to bring up when talking about Splatoon's unexpected messed up lore: I will now never stop thinking about the legit dead blended up remains of Octolings being used to brainwash their fellow kind like bro, w/e Splatoon 4 is about it better have some sort of spa/therapy place for Octolings, they need a REST 😭😭
To speculate on Agent 3 and the physical process of the 2 parts of sanitization, I think it might be possible that agent 3 was only given the 2nd part of the process. For my evidence for why, I've got a few reasons below BUT TLDR: Agent 3's skin does not absorb the IV goop, so the goop is easily shot off, sanitization part 1 allows the IV hoop into the subject's skin therby changing skin tone and why we cannot simply shoot goop off the other octarians. As it was said, the process of sanitization changes the subject's skin color. While it was directly noted to be green, it is possible that that is due to the Ink in IV bags given the octolings rather than the bathing process itself. Note that agent 8 is allowed to choose their skin tone at the start of the Octo-Expansion. That is par for the course in the series, but could have greater implications here. This is further backed up in side order as Marina describes that the subjects of the first part of sanitization are like a empty husk. Leading off of that idea, its possible that the IV DNA is only allowed INTO the subject when they are sanitized and thus empty. Agent 3 keeps their cannonical skin tone and the Hijacking (aka IV DNA) goop is ON them, not at all absorbed. I believe this may be proof that the Hijacking goop is the same goop not only used for all the sanitized subjects but also is only allowed IN the subject when they are "empty" after the first step of sanitization. This makes some logical and narrative sense as if Agent 3 was just given the goop and is now suddenly brainwashed, we'd need some sort of reason why other subjects habe to go through the through 2 step process. So by saying the reason for this is that the goop is easily shot off without the first step, we can tie a gentle knot around how the process requires two steps and why Agent 3 is an exception to all the other octolings in the DLC.
Here is my attempt to reconcile the lore of Splatoon 2 and 3: COVERING someone in the blended ink dissolves their memories within the ink, and then being INJECTED with the blended ink adds the dummy information. Additionally both of these inks may have been tempered with in different ways, like the ink they are covered with is devoid of memories, causing the memories to diffuse out of the subject, and the ink they are injected with using the IV bags is filled with the dummy information, and since the subject has lost their memories, these false memories diffuse into the subject.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! SOMEONE DID IT!!!!!!!!! ur the goat man omg and you explained tartars character nicely, i like this video alot.
I'd really like to put the theory out that rather than the ink removing memories, the ink carries the data that overwrites personalities. Mem cakes are a product of scooping out a subjects memories, such as 8, and dunking any formerly unwilling subjects in ink overloads whatever thoughts and personality they had left, hence why tartar could take control over 3, brief as it may have been. Besides, water is an excellent transmitter for sound waves, and given musics primary role in every games lore to date, it's plausible that the data being carried is whatever music tartar needed to overwrite someone's brain. In addition, Acht being somewhat willing to become sanitized would have given tartar the music he needed in order to sanitize more people more easily.
My personal head canon to why Acht still has her passion for making music because it isn’t etched in her soul, it’s etched in her very being, kinda like how the inkantation literally changed the dna of octolings who heard it. So even when she got sanitized, her passion for it still remained.
I joined in splatoon 3 and caught up in basically all the lore! I didnt find much sanitization vids but i found it quite interesting overall thx for this video!
Acht is genuinly my faorite charater in all of Splatoon because of her lore. She has such an interesting bavkstory and shes what got me so invested in the lore in the first place.
seeing that we got side order, i wonder if in the next game we're gonna get anything about the mammalian octolings/octarians. that'd be really cool to see, especially with the process and all of that.. maybe it was similar to sanitization?
20:38 in the third to last dev diary there is a paragraph from acht about cutting classes and slacking off. Maybe that’s why she wasn’t chosen to fight, It wasn’t her specialty.
Seeing the Sanitized Octarian color palette concepts from the OE art book was really cool. I know they were just trying to figure out the colors, but to me it looks like different types of sanitization As a result 2 of my sanitized OCs, one having orange spots covering their body and the being sickly pale
After Splatoon 3’s base singleplayer campaign, I started headcanoning that the “ghost” that comes out of you when you get splatted is actually the same thing Cap’n cuttlefish turns into when he’s dried out, but still covered in a bit of ink. Not sure why small enough animals in Splatoon can float, but it’s a consistent thing lol
I desperately wish we had any lore about whatever the hell happened to cuttlefish because it makes no sense and is easily my least favorite part of any splatoon story You’re right about small creatures being able to float, though. Personally I think the souls are closer to actual incorporeal spirits than something like Moe or Craymond, who are literally just small guys, but I guess there could be some underlying logic there lol
I always figured that agent 8 woke up midway through the sanitization process because of the inkantation. it’s what saved them from becoming a dummy, and although they lost much of their memories, they were able to cling on to something because of the inkantation being so powerful
I could imagine Tartar being an AI made up of nanobots, run by Kamabo co, using the phone as a router of sorts, as well as a means of communication, and then injecting the blended ink with nanobots containing Tartar's data.
I think the process agent 3 went through was more literally a parasite deal In some way the blended ink sorta became one with commander tartar as it is ofc tied directly to its will and the glob of ink on agent 3 seems to look very much like a parasite, and given inkling bodies are kinda two state solid liquid it could be that that was essentially at that point a bit of commander tartar directly interfacing with the mind/soul of agent 3
My best guess for agent 3's "sanitization" is that TarTar rushed the process on Three, immediately going to step 2 in a very crude manner. Since Eight was climbing out of the area, along with a lack of time for a proper version, the commander whipped up a dollup of ink to hijack Three and pursue the escaping octoling. My guess on what it means for the process, I think it shows both sides on what if one stage of sanitization is done, but not the other. Eight is obviously step 1 but not 2; complete amnesia of the individual. Three however, is step 2, but not 1; being controlled against their will. This is also probably why having the ink injected is so important. If it isn't injected and instead just smacked on, another subject can easily remove it on accident or purposefully, undoing the work and removing a soldier.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video, I haven't seen many people try and tackle how sanitization works in Splatoon (understandably so) but the subject itself is so interesting I'm really happy that Side Order dived deeper into the process of sanitization to answer a few of the questions that Octo Expansion brought
My thoughts and interpretation on Acht choosing to be sanitized was that they were fed a partial truth - they were only told that the process would remove their doubts, hesitation, and inner conflict so they could devote themself wholly to their music; not that the process would end up with them being controlled by Tartar. and that’s why they say that they had their will taken and were “forced to DJ for [Tartar]” despite willingly undergoing sanitization
2:51 It is interesting though because there have been observations made that Tartar's motivations differ depending on what language you're playing the game in. In the Japanese version, apparently Tartar's reasoning for despising the Octolings and Inklings isn't their fighting over small genetic differences or vain obsession with trends, but rather their hedonistic lifestyles. It's in the American translation that this was changed to fighting and vanity, which I think is interesting considering how our culture is certainly guilty of these, whether it be our nasty history of racism and xenophobia based wars/fighting, or our ever present reality that's overruled by capitalistic greed which fuels trends and fast fashion. It's especially interesting to see the differences in translations given that the main plot of Octo Expansion seems to center around this idea of interspecies racism and propaganda, which is furthered in Splatoon 3 when we hear that there are some areas of the Splatoon world where octolings and inklings already coexisted, and this idea of segregation is a regional thing.
Wonderful video! There were some elements of santitization which were a little foggy to me and you’ve really helped me get a better understanding of it! ^^ Additionally, I’d like to mention how one of the reasons why Agent 3 doesn’t appear green when hijacked could be because it’s a messy, on-the-fly decision by Tartar. The ink on their face is likely the same used for other santitized subjects, but they’re mostly injected and internalised, making it harder to remove. It would be like a cancerous tumour on one section of the body that could be removed, while Tartar gives his victims a kind of cancer that’s spread throughout the entire body, which is infinitely more difficult to remove.
I think that covering someone in the ink only "cleanses" their memory, but injection makes it a prt of them, hense the dummy information. Explains why there are two ways to do it.
Commander Tartar reminds me of AM, the antagonist of ‘I have no mouth, and I must scream’, hope in the next splatoon game have something related to that cus the dudes who make the lore/story can definitely pull it off

Wait Tar Tar's Sanitized Ink plan is very similar to how Mr Grizz almost covered the plantet in Fuzzy Ooze. Only difference is that Tar Tar was stopped before he was finished preparing, while Mr Grizz was stopped while trying to actually do his plan
I now I have a lot of lore for my OCs to fix :/ I have an unhealthy obsession with sanitation.😅 But in my OC canon Kamabo Co. is trying to expand to other cephalopods, but due to having more free will, they kinda need to be unconscious and it takes longer, the first few experiments rejected the sanitation, experiment No.4 woke up and broke free only losing “spark” or how he first loved who he loved. And I think the octolings that help sanitize other octarians were hired and tricked into getting sanitized.
16:34 i honestly thing both ways to being sanitized whether its being covered or injected could work. Maybe the two steps only get used with octolings similar to 8 for the whole promised land shenanigans while the octarians get covered in it and it instantly effects them. (apologies if this is ignoring anything said in the video 😭)
GRAHHHHH I LOVE SANITIZATION!!! I LOVE YOUR VIDEO TOO!! I love that it's a bit different from the usual colorful stuff we see from Splatoon, because it's really quite a disturbing yet interesting topic! Hopefully we do learn more about this in Splatoon 4 or whatever sequel (although of course it would be a new saga), and the next game needs to clear up some stuff we're still missing!
Theres actually a possibility that the common octoling cut tentacle enemy doesn't have a soul due to being cuttings from an already sanitized octoling instead of it being sanitized after already being made. I wonder if that means that only full body octolings have souls. kinda dark to think about tho lol.
I feel like for 3, she could understand what was happening, but couldn’t control herself under tar tar’s influence. So it was like she could see and hear everything, but couldn’t move herself.
28:18 If that's the case, then maybe should do something where the last few Octolings/Octarians are tentatively accepted by the Inklings. Give them a better ending than just extinction.
This was such a phenomenal watch. Fantastic job on the editing and everything here! Sanitization has always been one of the most interesting concepts in Splatoon lore. I hope at some point (if they keep with the ideas of sanitization in the story) we get to see the process happen
Eight being sanitized does make sense but the thing that confuses me is how she went from getting taken underground along with 3 and Craig to in the sanitization vat to being woken up by Craig
Idea: Blended ink could do all of that stuff. The ink covers the subject, and puts the memories in the ink. The memories are turned into mem cakes to prevent anyone from regaining them. This could explain why Agent 3 has they're memories back but not the others.
I don't know much about splatoon at all but I'd imagine that the special limiter thing it's probably a physical device used to make spletfest ink fights more fun
This video was freaking awesome! I would kill for more videos like this! There’s just so many mysteries in this series, like if Big Betrayal is just marketing or not! ✨
I can't thank you enough for making this video. Now, I'll be able to write my characters for my own story line in much better detail. Not only my agent 8, who has strikingly similar motivations to acht, but one of the first sanitized individuals, a failed experiment. So thank you, I would have been much more lost without this.

22:36 I have my own theory on this as well: the octarians were simply the easiest to convince. All it would take would be the promise of the surface and I’m sure the vast majority of octarians would at least be intrigued enough to give the whole deal a chance, by which point it would already be too late to back out.
I agree

I just think it's important to acknowledge that they were aware of the potential consequences and still went through with it

i've personally always thought that agent 3's "sanitization" was different than the usual process
rather than the whole ripping out and replacing memories thing, tartar just pumped the unconscious agent with enough of the blended ooze to "overwrite" or "drown out" their will, to the point that it was literally oozing out of their head
and the reason that agent 3 goes down in the end is because the supply tartar pumped into them had run dry after all the specials, shooting, dodgerolls, and reviving after a splat
maybe even a bit of fighting from within after said splat briefly woke up 3's little ghost and gave it a moment without the blended ink but that's just headcanon brain having fun
Maybe that’s why memcakes are the reward for each test; the memories contained within a given memcake will no longer be relevant in future tests, so it’s used as a reward and therefore an incentive for the subject to press onward.
i really like this theory!

About the severed tentacle Octarians, I have what might be a good -game- theory for them:
In real life Octopi, the tentacles actually all contain their own little "mini brains" - these allow the tentacles to act with so much seemingly independent intelligence at the same time and are a good part for how Octopi can do what they can with their tentacles.
This would then suggest that the Octo Samurai is actually a more traditional form or some other variant of Octoling
This theory also e plains alot about their behavior and I think might fit with the Octoling society as far as I am aware - actual octopi can regrow severed tentacles, so if the same transfers this logic to octolings they can mass produce/mass replace these guys by just clipping them off of donor octolings.
But hey
thats just a theory
a game theory!
Abit like how in. . .Undertale (oh no Im doing it too) boss monster souls remain for abit after they die but normal monsters tend to just vaporize immediately
I dunno, I will now have to jump down the rabbit hole of thinking about this lol
I’m fairly confident that the sanitization process, specifically the role of the blended ink, is different than how you’ve theorized here. Here’s my best guess of the process:
First, the subject’s memories are removed to create mem cakes.
There are some things that don't quite add up, but that's just how it is with Nintendo sometimes unfortunately
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, though!

Also, I don't know if I would've thought to readdress the "partial sanitization" misconception, but I'm really glad you did, didn't realize how widespread it still was 😔
I think one thing that would've been worth addressing is....In the fifth diary entry, Marina mentions that Cuttlefish has mem cakes too...?
I have literally zero clue, and if I did address it in the video, it would just be me saying I have zero clue lmao
Is it possible that Marina just meant she got Eight's Mem Cakes from "Eight and Cuttlefish" meaning they were both holding on to Eight's? I'm not sure how it reads in the Japanese version, but that would be a simpler explanation. I'm guessing that isn't the case if you're asking though lol
It is interesting that Tartar doesn't stop Cuttlefish from entering the blender despite him not collecting the four Thangs, but there are other signs of Tartar's plan being imperfect. But also it does sometimes
tldr the inner machinations of Craig are an enigma, but thanks for watching & thanks for all the translation work that even made this video possible!
The guys a war hero, if anyone's gonna get a free pass to the blender it'd be him.
honestly, don't have much to say besides this whole video is peak cinema and really easy to understand. You cooked
thanks for compiling this video! now i can use this to piss people off when i say "splatoon is cephalopod cyberpunk 2077 and mikoshi is real in splatoon"
FOUND YOU😋
Yesss, exactly what I was thinking. Not only does it solve a hole in that part of the lore, but the wording makes more sense too. Sanitize means to clean; so, to clean out their memories. Replacing their memories comes after.
Neither 3 or 8 likely were injected imo
18:33
i believe that instead of it being instantaneous the color change takes time and can be reversed if not fully completed, emphasized by the green complexions shown on the male and female models of the characters
It makes sense that it wouldn't be instant, but it seems counterintuitive to me that the 2nd step (injection) would cause the color change rather than being covered in ink. I'm not even sure if the characters are turning green in the character creation screen, I think it's just the lighting
Color of the soul may be a literal term in Splatoon seeing as Compromised Agent 3 also produced the SLUDGE despite not being mind wiped
Sanitization is probably one of my favourite parts of the lore, it's so interesting
Bro this is so good it puts up so much detail and it helps people who have never really played side order or Octo expansion it truly explains what is happening throughout time
the only choice of escape being giving up your free will is such a beautiful irony
such is life
i would say hijacking agent 3 without removing the memories would be because it was a last ditch effort on tartar’s part, as it didnt have time to remove them so it merely just hijacked the mind.
Fantastic video! Sanitization has been a part of the lore that i never really understood but your video helped greatly! Its also great to get more theories so thanks for that too.
The lore goes crazy fr
So deep fr
@@milliefleuroh hey Millie! Back on the Splatoon kick and the sanitization stuff is my favorite! I made a sanitized Inkling OC for MK8Deluxe and she’s my current hyperfixation lol
@@hyzmarie that’s so cool, I gotta see her design sometime! (And draw her maybe too??)
@@milliefleur :D she’s on Artfight, though I only have Picrews I made at 2am for her design… :)
Why do I get the feeling that if the greater inkling/octoling society knew about Sanitising they would try to use it to get cool green and blue tentacles, that just feels in character to me
^they would
They are absolutely FASCINATED by Acht
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO !!!! 😭😭😭
Having never played any other entry than Splatoon 3 I didn't really understand everything that was going on with Sanitization but I really wanted to do
I'll make sure to enjoy this video, as well as watching it again from time to time 😊
Octoling expansion is what got me to actually look at splatoon. Before that I just thought it was just exactly how it looked, a shooter with paint. I didn’t know or understand much of what I was watching but it was so cool to se streamers play it and die over and over lol. Good vid 👍 now I know that I was watching the the crumbling of an entire species. Neat
another thing to bring up when talking about Splatoon's unexpected messed up lore:
I will now never stop thinking about the legit dead blended up remains of Octolings being used to brainwash their fellow kind
like bro, w/e Splatoon 4 is about it better have some sort of spa/therapy place for Octolings, they need a REST
😭😭
I mean we have Brinewater Springs in Splatoon 3
To speculate on Agent 3 and the physical process of the 2 parts of sanitization, I think it might be possible that agent 3 was only given the 2nd part of the process.
For my evidence for why, I've got a few reasons below BUT TLDR:
Agent 3's skin does not absorb the IV goop, so the goop is easily shot off, sanitization part 1 allows the IV hoop into the subject's skin therby changing skin tone and why we cannot simply shoot goop off the other octarians.
Here is my attempt to reconcile the lore of Splatoon 2 and 3:
COVERING someone in the blended ink dissolves their memories within the ink, and then being INJECTED with the blended ink adds the dummy information.
It would be nice to get more details about Fuzzy Ooze for sure. It feels very underdeveloped compared to Sanitization
I know they were just trying to figure out the colors, but to me it looks like different types of sanitization
As a result 2 of my sanitized OCs, one having orange spots covering their body and the being sickly pale
So inklings are basically realistic squids piloting ink mechs
I desperately wish we had any lore about whatever the hell happened to cuttlefish because it makes no sense and is easily my least favorite part of any splatoon story
You’re right about small creatures being able to float, though.
I think the process agent 3 went through was more literally a parasite deal
In some way the blended ink sorta became one with commander tartar as it is ofc tied directly to its will and the glob of ink on agent 3 seems to look very much like a parasite, and given inkling bodies are kinda two state solid liquid it could be that that was essentially at that point a bit of commander tartar directly interfacing with the mind/soul of agent 3
1:45 Oh hey, that's me
I thought u died
He's an ai... he just uploaded himself to the internet
If it isn't injected and instead just smacked on, another subject can easily remove it on accident or purposefully, undoing the work and removing a soldier.
makes me wish we had more info about the creation of fuzzy octarians
19:30 I could imidiately hear the instant regret after saying "determined" right after an Undertale reference
THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video, I haven't seen many people try and tackle how sanitization works in Splatoon (understandably so) but the subject itself is so interesting
I'm really happy that Side Order dived deeper into the process of sanitization to answer a few of the questions that Octo Expansion brought
Maybe the blob on A3 is the Dummy Information, their mind wasn’t emptied first so Tartar controlled him externally.
i'm so glad the acht section of this video is so long. my silly little guy. awesome rest of the video too
Bruh I love the sanitization concept as a whole! Way to feed my hyperfixation bro 👍
This is literally my favorite splatoon thing!!! Thank you for this video!!!
This is honestly the best explanation of sanitisation but especially the acht part that I’ve seen
Wonderful video! There were some elements of santitization which were a little foggy to me and you’ve really helped me get a better understanding of it! ^^
Additionally, I’d like to mention how one of the reasons why Agent 3 doesn’t appear green when hijacked could be because it’s a messy, on-the-fly decision by Tartar.
I never noticed the IV bags in octo expansion. I think they're a really cool detail
I think that covering someone in the ink only "cleanses" their memory, but injection makes it a prt of them, hense the dummy information.
Explains why there are two ways to do it.
We need more splatoon fans like you who Cares about the lore and don't make any drama or being toxic in general. Keep going !
Commander Tartar reminds me of AM, the antagonist of ‘I have no mouth, and I must scream’, hope in the next splatoon game have something related to that cus the dudes who make the lore/story can definitely pull it off
Thank you for making this, it's very easy to understand, I've been struggling to catch up with these lores since splat3 is my first Splatoon game so thank you!
As someone who's never played Splatoon... Splatoon lore is WILD! (and I mean that in a good way).
I really appreciate this congregation of the info we know about one of the most interesting aspects of the splatoon world, great video
The second you introduced the little tiles about what is canon and what not you got my follow . I love it when the video gets a little visualization when something is important. Works great with my brain not to mess up info ❤❤
I'm a newcomer to Splatoon, and as I've been thinking about the fact that I know next to nothing about the lore, this was a very interesting video!
Now, I just gotta figure out if the existence of cereal boxes in Splatoon suggests the existence of cereal farmers, or if they're like relics or something
Some are relics but alot of products humans had the octolings and squidlings recreated. Ramen, cereal, milk, etc

18:40 i actually needed that thank you
I now I have a lot of lore for my OCs to fix :/ I have an unhealthy obsession with sanitation.😅 But in my OC canon Kamabo Co. is trying to expand to other cephalopods, but due to having more free will, they kinda need to be unconscious and it takes longer, the first few experiments rejected the sanitation, experiment No.4 woke up and broke free only losing “spark” or how he first loved who he loved.
FINALLY SOMEONE COVERS THIS
Amazing vid! I LIVE for Splatoon lore so whenever someone makes a good vid about it I am there😂
Theres actually a possibility that the common octoling cut tentacle enemy doesn't have a soul due to being cuttings from an already sanitized octoling instead of it being sanitized after already being made. I wonder if that means that only full body octolings have souls. kinda dark to think about tho lol.
This video makes me want a splatoon game to go in depth into the daily Octarian life through gameplay
That background Order fight scene at the end is so cursed I love it
