  • Welcome to Top 5 Missing Factions from Rome Total War.
In this video, we will look into Factions that could have been and would have worked well with the game.
These are factions that I would want to have seen, for either historical, or gameplay reasons.
Overall though, I am Not saying Rome Total War is a Bad Game because it lacks these. Nor am I saying these Factions will improve the game. But they could have been interesting.

Forgot to say in the video why I did not add Athens as it starts rebel: It's because Athens would completely surrounded and thrown to the side of Greece. I can also see them getting overshadowed a lot as well and for the start date, historically they were no doing much, unlike Eprius, which I think by this point in history would be a better pick.
Also: Overall, I am Not saying Rome Total War is a Bad Game because it lacks these. Nor am I saying these Factions will improve the game. But they could have been interesting. : )

One (small) problem with Northern Italy in the Total War maps is that between Mediolanum and France there is no other Northern Italian settlement. Yet adding the city of Susa (Segusio) would make it possible to create a faction controlling Susa and Segesta: the Ligurians.
To this day, the mountains near Susa are called the "Cottian" Alps, from the Roman province of "Alpes Cottiae".

The Faction you’re thinking of for the north could be simply the Cimbri or possibly Jutes; likewise the Northern Italian Gauls could be called “The Cisalpine Confederation”, the Italo-Gauls, or otherwise pick from the Taurini, Insubres or Boii as faction names.
I’d also add the Belgae as a blend of Gallic and Germanic culture that’s sits between the two, and possibly the Helvetii as well (Rhaetia / modern Switzerland). Not on your list, I would suggest the Atropatene, Cappadocians, Bithynians, Lusitanians and Nabatean Arabs as worthwhile additions, possibly even the Nubians south of Egypt.
From what you mentioned, I completely agree about Illyria and Galatia, and think Epirus, Cherson and Marsallia are all totally worthy suggestions too. With these extra factions though, the campaign war would easily want another 20 provinces or so..

    • @authenticbitterleben7434
      @authenticbitterleben7434 3 роки тому +1

I think more factions is always better, but it comes with two important caveats:
1st more factions also means there have to be more provinces as otherwise everything would get immensely crowded
2nd having more factions blocks Rome and while a good player can easily take the north Italian settlements or Epirus even if they're not held by rebels but rather a new ai faction, I'm doubtful the Roman ai can. I think Rome should always be the late game final threat for any player but I fear the Romans might become stuck if they fail their usual first turn conquests.
Epirus and raetia only work if ai Rome is buffed to take these settlements as if they were rebels. Furthermore these factions should all have a second settlement behind the first so that they can recruit units while their first is besieged. This is so that the player has a fighting chance to win against the buffed Romans. And now I really want to play a campaign as Epirus or raetia for the challenge of having to fight of wave after wave of Romans.
And another thing: I can imagine the kingdom of Judah, although this is probably not the best decision gameplay wise. The Europa barbaorum mod also slightly expanded the map towards the east and south just enough so that they could add an Arabian faction in Yemen. I don't remember if they called it hadramut, Saba or himjar but I had a pretty good campaign with them once. In a potential Rome remastered mod they could become nabatea as you mentioned. Also Bactria, Maurya, atropatene and another steppe horse nation would all be possible to add if the map was.just expanded a tiny bit east. Now that Rome remastered removed the faction limit all this is possible.

Galatia in Rome2 was a disapointment. The text on the Rome2 wiki discript them as a Gallic warrior class that ruled over eastern anatolian people. But the unit roster just gave us the gallic+special units insted of a mix of gallic elite unit supported by eastern low tier units. I haven't found a mod yet.

An interesting thing would be if there were more factions groups like the Romans that have a shared gameplay feature. Gauls and Germans could be broken up but with the factions racing to fill a "confederate"-meter. Carthage could have the same system as Rome. Macedons, Seleucids, and Egypt could have something about becoming the one successor of Alexander the Great and the Greek city states could have panhellenic games or something. That way the non-Roman factions wouldn't feel so isolated.
And I am definitely interested in seeing something like this for Medieval II (hopefully more Muslim and Orthodox factions).

Also I think the romans could have been reworked to be more like Rome 2 where instead of being broken into many factions that are allied together working on the will of the sentate until somebody decides to fuck that turn on the others and delcare themselves emperor instead it is a united faction but you can control a gens within the empire and must play an internal political game by trying to earn great influence for your gens while competing with rival gens.

Always had a soft spot for Massilia after playing XGM (Expanded(?) Greek Mod), along with the Bosporan Kingdom. Bactria too.
But, yea, good list Melkor. All of the factions you mentioned would be interesting to see in the game. Illyria, Epirus, Bactria (only really possible with an expanded map, of course), Massilia, Bosporan Kingdom, Ligurians..I'm sure there's others that could be fit in if enough research were done and you weren't too concerned about historical limitations (clearly CA weren't when they made the game~).
Thinking of something that wasn't touched on in the video; I wouldn't be against seeing some sort of Baltic tribe around the areas of Estonia, Lithuania, and Prussia if that were possible. Give the Germans and Scythians a faction to worry about that has perhaps a mix of the two factions? Good archers/horse archers, decent hit-and-run axemen, etc.

One problem is that some regions on the map are too sparsely populated with settlements. Italy could have another 2 settlements (not to mention Corsica) and Illyria could have more settlements. Some of the suggestions could easily be fused to the faction "Western Greeks" which could own Epirus, a settlement in southern Italy, Syracus and possibly Massilia. What I would love to see as a faction are the Nabateans, there just isn't a decent desert faction and this corner of the map is so empty.

I think that, the less factions are better, because the limitations of the engine. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to which 1-2 factions would add the most to the gameplay in the Campaning, and at the same time which factions could disappear from the game, without significant drawbacks in the campaning experince (however, that's not what the movie is about).
I fully agree with Illyria. Although playing Dacia would be particularly difficult then, but historically it would be very appropriate for the Campaning period. Dacia was the most important in the 1st century BC. (and the Campaign ends in AD 14). The Dacians united around the 1st century BC. So it would be optimal for Campaning to Dacian lands be the Barbarian Rebels settlements, and on with about the first half of the 1st century BC, appear several strong Dacian armies as a playable faction. Let's remember that the appearance of RTW Dacia was mainly influenced by the movie "Gladiator", where the first battle scene is inspired by the Marcomannic Wars (also the presence of quite OP Archers Axilia unit in RTW in the Roman roster is inspired by the movie, and other gameplay elements). It's just that this is a period well beyond the end of the campaign (about 170 years). The appearance of Illyria would make the plying Trance would be easier, and considering this period, it would be ok. Especially if Illyria would slow down the expansion of the Romans to this area for some time. That also wili be correct.
Aside from that. I believe that the "new" faction that would bring the most to campaning could be... the Greek Rebels (Greek polis). The faction would combine all Greek settlements in the RTW Rebel faction (Crimea, Appolonia, Massilia, Bizantium etc.). Pergamon can also be added to this faction settelemnt pool (it was not an ally of Sparta).
What would that change? Each unplayable faction has its own goals in the AI algorithm. So the Greek rebels could be "profiled" as a faction looking for allies and protectors and paying their neighbors money for not attacking in a given turn. At the same time, each of the settlements should has strong units and "reinforced" cities from the technological side at the beginning of the campaign (having a port, walls - where it would be historically justified, hoplites, archers, slingers, all units with reinforced armor and some experience). Polis Expansion would be very defensive in campaning. So that they will last as long as possible. So in these cities would play the same role as in the ancient world in the perspective of main powers (Carthage, Macedonia, Rome), cassus belli 😉 At the same time they would disappear conquered by larger countries in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. As was the case with most of them. Which fits with the decline of the Hellenistic era that should be illustrated in the Campaign.
Additionally, if you give this faction a lot of money to start (e.g. 150-200K deniers). Then the existence of these policies would allow their neighbors from the weaker factions to receive a steady cash income. Paying by the Greek Rebeles to each of the smaller neighboring factions not to attack every turn. This would be beneficialt when you playing Scythians, Gauls, Spanish, Thracians, Pontus and Armenia or even Seleucids (so until the period apx 240-225 BC, when each player balances the budget). While the AI of the Greek Polis faction would rather don’t developt settelment too much. Neighboring Greek Polis with this would be more beneficial for weaker factions than conquering it. For example, if the Gauls gained Massilia, it would allow them to earn 400-500 deniers income each turn, but other hand the Gauls would receive, for example, 1500-2500 deniers per turn from the faction, for not atacking settlement. Playing as Gauls, it wouldn't make much sense to capture this settlements at the beginning of the campaign. Especially if capturing Massilia would mean capturing a settlement at the technological of lev. 1 (just added port and paved roads), withaut mamy population. And it would first involve siege of settlement with desent hoplite and peltast troops. Lower profits than costs. At the same time, the capture of the settlement by Romans or Carthage would be associated with "breaking off" a permanent and reliable income at the beginning of the campaign for the Gauls. So you playing as Gauls could protect Massilia from the conquering by Rome for quite some turns, because this is where you balance your budget damaged by wars with Germans, Britons, etc.

  • @FaithfulOfBrigantia

Epirus was made to be conquered at turn 1, it would be a waste of faction space.
Massalia is too small to be a playable faction, so it would be better to be a rebel settlement with greek culture so the Julii can still fight some phalanxes.
    The rest seem interesting additions.
So basically my top 5 would include Bosforus, the Cimbri and the Galatians.
However i would also add a slavic barbarian faction somewhere in Eastern Europe, maybe the Veneddi in Pripet and maybe also Locus Gepidae.
They would be a Germanic/Scythian hybrid which focuses on infantry and archers.
I would also split the two halves of "Spain" in two different factions.
The Iberians in the two eastern settlements, which would be basically the current "Spain" faction, and then add a new "Hispano Celt" or "Celtiberian" faction in the two western settlements plus the weird Gaul settlement in the middle, which would be a barbarian faction similar to Gaul but more defensive oriented and cappable of building barbarian stone walls (See: Castro Culture)
