The Legendary Battle of Teutoburg Forest: How Arminius Humiliated Rome!

  • In 9 AD, Arminius brought fear to the Roman Empire in the Teutoburg Forest by annihilating three legions, Legio XVII, XVIII, and XIX. The province of Germania was under Roman occupation and Varus was the legion general in charge of keeping the peace in the newly conquered territory. Arminius was a trusted commander of the auxiliary force in the Roman army and Varus was led into a trap as Arminius had a change of heart and betrayed him. He took the time to unite the Germanic tribes into a huge army of around 15,000 men. He fabricated a story by saying that the Germanics were planning a full-scale rebellion and advised Varus to start marching on each of the tribes and quell this rebellion in its infancy. As the legions marched towards the tribal villages, they were led through a dense and unhospitable forest called Teutoburg. After torrential rains, the roads through the forest were muddy and hard to traverse. Arminius demanded leave from the army in order to assemble the tribesmen loyal to Rome. Instead, he organized an ambush that would devastate the legions of Varus and eventually cause his death by suicide. This event caused so much panic and disgrace in Rome that the legions were never reformed again.
This battle was realized using Rome 2 Total War. The following mods were used to create the cinematic:

Read the book of Ben Kane: the hunt for the eagle. It was constantly raining for a week during the battle. The Roman's Armour had become heavy by the rain, so they had really problems moving. Also the constant german attacks exhaused them. Virus made a big mistake by going through this forest and not listening to its officers....

There were no ancient autobahns cutting through the forest.
A jungle of ashes, beeches and oaks covered the hills.
The birds don't chirp and sing in autumn.
Wind and rain made the music according to the lore.
Wet humus ground doesn't make marching sound.
A peat bog can't be crossed by armoured formations.
The Alps aren't visible on the horizon.

@@ottosaxo I know that forest well, yes, there are birds in autumn.
As for the inaccuracies of visual representation.
Marching order is wrong. Attacks wd be directly out of the "Unterholz". Germanics would've had few swords, mostly armed with framae, smaller shields. The show-down, where most Romans died was carefully prepared (Kalkriese), with sand walls on either side; the Germanics exactly didn't storm against a well-formed Roman defensive line, as Arminius knew only too well, how ineffective that was.

The Romans were annihilated with many factors planned for by Armenius. The rain was torrential, mud was a factor. Many were struck with spears and arrows without the attackers exposing themselves. If not mistaken, the Romans were four across, nothing like formation at all. Quite funny that the Germanics would often just run away during battle....and for good reasons. No, Teutoburg was very one sided, probably a few hundred to 34000. Only about one thousand Romans made it back. And I will stick with what I said.... Romans fought well in one direction....look what Hannibal did to great results. A little bushwhacking goes a long way.

People love to discuss one of the worst defeats in the Roman army history and how the Germanic tribes joined together and massacred over 20k Roman Legionairs forcing thier leader to commit suicide a d took a Roman eagle as a prize of war completing Roman's humiliation
    But.........
What most historians dobt bother to mention was the revenge campaign they waged against tose same Germanic tribes afterwards that was truly horrific even by the standards of that period which were truely unimaginably horrible essentially the Roman's invaded Germania and left no man women or child they found alive. The Roman's literally put 10s of thousands of Germanic tribes people to the sword.
Essentially rendering the the Germanias victory in the Teutoburg Forest to the status of a Pyrrhic Victory at best

@arthurdirindinjr1792 Friend, This Betrayal And Massacre Of The Germans Was A Propaganda Campaign Of The National Socialists Of The 19th Century And The National Socialists Of The 20th Century, Putting The Romans As Inferior Before The Barbarian Germans But The National Socialists Do Not Say And Omit Vengeance And Humiliating Defeat That Julius Caesar Germanicus Given Him And Another Thing Due To The Fault Of Tiberius For The Jealousy And Envy He Had Of Germanicus He Didn't Put An End To That Threat Once And For All And Not To Mention That Marcus Aurelius Wanted To Continue With His Legacy, Kulio Caesar Germanicus asked the bastard Tiberius for one last campaign to put an end to the remaining threat and Tiberius said that he was not sure that if Rome had conquered, incorporated and Romanized Germany, he was sure that the empire would have lasted much longer and would have even been a good region to put an end to. The Huns and then conquered all of Slavia and another part of Germany called Scandinavia. Don't worry that the Roman Empire would not have collapsed, but rest assured that the European political context would have been very different and English would not have been the official language. In its place, everyone would have spoken English. Latin Furthermore, I do not rule out that Rome, with the conquest of this region, was strong and unified and Christianity would not have been the official religion and would have taken so much power and the Romanians would have solved their intrinsic problems and would have remained strong and united and with the mentality of fighting. Against A Common Enemy Rome Was At The Head Of The World Today And As A Civilization We Were Very, Very Advanced And Be Sure That All Of Europe Was Like The Rest Of The West And The World Was A Much Better Place Than It Is Now With The Roman Empire At The Head.

A coward?? Arminius was extremely brave, fighting in the forefront himself. Besides, at age 26 uniting warring Germanic tribes, outsmarting the Roman governor and out maneuvering the Roman invaders' militarily was pure genius like it or not. No-one else in Europe achieved anything like it. Not the Gauls nor the Britons. Why even take a Roman point of view beats me.

In the battle in the Teutoburg Forest, it was not the Germans who fought, but the Slavs, specifically Poles. The German narud began to emerge around the 7th century. At that time, on the present lands of Germany, Poland and Russia, there was a great empire of the Slavs called Lechistan or Great Sarmatia. It stretched from the Ural Mountains in the east to the Rhine in the west. From the Baltic Sea in the north to the Kalkaz Mountains in the south.

My problem with a lot of digital re-eanactments of the TBwald is how dry and wide the roads are. I guess for gameplay purposes this has to be the case. However, the actual battle by all accounts, was essentially a clever series of ambuscades, a gradual whittling away of Roman strength. While the results were spectacular, I'd wager, were we able to watch the real thing, up until the Romans final attempts to break out, TBW unlike Hannibals famous Trebia ambush, would likely be one of the more boring engagements. Nevertheless, it'd be essential viewing for any arm chair general.

This epic battle lasted three days and it is known that more than twice as many civilians accompanied the Roman legions, about 50,000, including slaves, servants, wives and children. In fact, this long and slow column of about 15 kilometers even included a mobile prostitute.

The one big flaw, is you're presenting Roman Legions marching through a dense forest ,what ,10,15 abrest. When the reality is that because of the dense forest they mainly marched in at least 2 abreast. If I'm wrong ,correct me. Still loved the vid.

It is a big mistake to believe that the attack and battle against Varus' army b e g a n on a march. "prima Vari castra" ... rapiuntur! The translation is not good/correct if the words "prima castra" are translated as "the first camp". It was the summer camp 9 a.D. where he sat in court and it was the front camp - das vorderste Lager - of the Romans (viewed from the Rhine).

A roman marching column was set up differently and looks differently. People were carrying a lots of stuff, the shields are in a cover on the back, and nowhere there was enough space for 10 or twenty soldiers next to each other. Tactics on a march was one of the basic things the romans followed. The video might look nice, but is utter nonsense.
