Rome vs Greeks | Massive Cinematic Historical Battle of Magnesia 190 BC | Total War

- The Massive Battle of Magnesia took place on December 190 BC between Rome vs Greeks of the Seleucid Empire. The Roman forces were led by consul Lucius Cornelius Scipio allied with the Pergamene king Eumenes II. The Seleucid army was led by Antiochus III the Great alongside Seleucus IV and Philip. The modern accounts place the numbers of the Roman army between 30,000 and 50,000 and the Greek army between 50,000 to 70,000. As massive battles go, this one fits one of the more massive battles in ancient history. And one as decisive as the battle of Zama.
The battle started on the Seleucid left flank as Seleucus IV advanced his chariots toward the Romans. The Roman right flank led by Eumenes II pushed up his skirmishers and peppered the chariots as they approached. This was a decisive error on Seleucus' side, as his chariots panicked and retreated towards his lines, creating chaos among the cataphracts. Eumenes pressed the advantage and charged his cavalry. After some fighting, the Seleucid left flank collapsed and endangered their phalanx lines in the center which were now engaged in fierce fighting with Lucius Cornelius Scipio. Scipio also had success in the center, although the Greek phalanx held its ground. The Roman javelins were really dealing a heavy blow to the Seleucid lines and most importantly affected the Indian war elephants which was placed in between the phalanx lines. They eventually ran amok after pressure from the skirmishing Roman force and trampled the phalanx formation creating more chaos which Scipio then took advantage of. With the Seleucid center now effectively surrounded by the Romans from their left flank, the phalanx led by Philip start retreating. On the Seleucid right wing, however, Antiochus III had great success in pushing the Roman forces after a successful cataphract charge supported by shield-bearers and light infantry. The Roman left wing was forced to retreat toward their camp. After being reinforced, they were able to stand their ground against the Greek push. Antiochus III, however, was stuck in heavy fighting on the right wing. Unable to reach the center in time to save it from total collapse, he fled the battlefield with the remaining army.

Antiochus III: and where will I get some money?
(Crickets chirping)
It appears Antiochus made the same mistake at Magnesia that he had made 27 years prior at the battle of Raphia. He pushed the right flank to quickly, got caught up in the chase of a fleeing adversary, which ultimately led to the tattering of the Seleucid line. Those who do not learn from history.....
We senate and people of Rome request Mithridatic wars and Social war cinematics. Such an underrated conflicts
I second this
Dito
I veto the notion and request The first Punic war which is even more underrated.
Sad the events that led to the fall of the Republic are barely given attention.
Yikes! That Battle of Magnesia must've been terrifying! I'm just glad no one got hurt.
it was so much fun i was there. they gave out juice boxes after
Love how you show the Roman army. In this era the Legionary provided their own arms and armor. That's plainly visible in the vid. Different color shields although the same kind. Outstanding! Cheers.
Thanks Paul, glad you liked it
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI I didn't just like it, I loved it! The Romans have always been fascinating to me especially before the Marion Reforms. The 4 lines, Velites, Hastati, Principi and the Triaii. Way above what everyone else had. Love the work. Cheers.
Great video as always, this vid made me feel nostalgic again for Rome and I am listening to History of Rome again. Could you recreate naval battles too? Btw do you narrate your vids.
Great vid, absolutely brilliant. The Seleucids are by far my favourite faction to play as in Rome 2.
I've always been fascinated by the Seleucid dynasty, especially since they are not as well known and written about as the other Successor states. So much so that I specialised in Seleucid history at University. Great to see a video featuring one of there greatest Monarchs.
Please keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoyed!
I'm interested in them too. Can you tell how the huge Seleucid Empire actually fell? I know they had intern conflicts but still such a huge empire that was actually a kingdom if I'm not mistaken...
@@Kvs-vf9nt It was a Kingdom you are right, It was really a combination of Alexander's and Achaemenid Kinship. The Empire fell due to a combination of civil wars fought by claimants to the throne, satraps revolting against the kings and external enemies attacking. The Bactrian satrap Diodotos declared independence a created and empire/kingdom of his own called The Greco Bactrian Empire. The Parni tribes took over Parthia and fought to expand into the rest of Iran whilst Rome after defeating Antiochus II took all Seleucid territory west of the tarsus mnts and gave it to their allies such as Rhodes and Pergamon who had originally been under Seleucid control. After Magnesia the Seleucids had constant interference from Rome backing satraps who wanted independence and backing rival claimants to the throne. Rome apparently even sent agents to Syria to hamstring all the Seleucid Indian war elephants.
And that's it really, over time Parthia, Armenia and Rome took territory until all that was left was Syria which was finally conquered by Pompey.
Hope this helps. 😀
@@VikingRik Very interesting. Thanks men!
Lol your like the far extension of me 🤣 I love there history lots as well.
these are really well done bro. Obviously the history is covered in top notch form. but even the camera work and cinematics. pretty kick-ass stuff
thank you, man! I'm happy you're enjoying this!
The idea with the small map was very good allowing us viewers to really fallow the battle💯❤️
Kudos ! One of the best videos I've seen on legion vs phalanx.
Thanks!
Informative, realistic... and bloody, great video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed my vid!
This content is outstanding! By far the best I have ever seen. Brilliant in any aspect, even small details.
Many thanks!
Awesome. I am glad you enjoyed it
Hello, I saw your video. And personally, I was very happy. Unfortunately, this war is not well known nowadays. I am from Manisa and even I do not know about it. This is a shame. I think it is a matter of pride that you brought these wars to light.
Superb video, many thanks!
Appreciate it
Best you've done so far my dude
Thank you man!
One of the greatest battles of history.
I'm always waiting for you to make another video
Thanks. Hopd you liked this one
Great cinematic battle!
Edit can you do one Sulla against Pontus? Or the Sullani against Mariani. You can choose. I really would like to see that. DEI has the Mitharadetic wars campaign now.
Great stuff!
Excellent! Some ideas for you: make the cimbrian wars , rome against parthia and scythia , Baktrian kingdom against the mauryan kingdom , Pergamon vs Galatians , Odrysian vs Macedon , Bosphorus kingdom vs Galatians , rome vs saba , etruscans vs celts , iberians vs rome, Samnites vs Syracuse , the Seleucids vs Judea (there Was a mod about the Judea faction)
Yes, Bactria vs Mauryan would be great.😄👍
One of the greatest battle 🔥
뭔가 역사 다큐멘터리를 보는 듯한 영상 편집이네요 재미있네요 잘보겠습니다
I hope you liked it
Thanks for your great videos, I love history, but never good at this game, though I love to play.
Magnesia is one hell of a battle that showed the Romans are serioualy badass. Great battle mate
The Romans did not fight Alexander. Otherwise he would've made mince meat out of the Romans .
He was all about strategy.
@@AKRITAS365 I didn't say the Romans fought Alexander, during his time they were just like any other kingdom. But The Romans at their best they beat the Macedonian Phalanx and Alexander's successor's kingdoms/empires. I give number 1 to Alexander as histories greatest general but 2 to Julius Caesar.
@@stefanvella9807 People often compare units of armies. For me it is much more about strategy, preparation and commanding, not about which unit is better. In this battle, the Romans won because Scipio was a great military leader. If Alexander had to face the Romans maybe he wouldn't have used Phalanx and more flexible units instead. We'll never know🙂
Loved it
Great job
Thanks
Gostei muito video, mostrando a Organização do Exército Romano.
Very well done.
I stopped playing that game because of the strategic map and how it handled things. I liked the first one better.
.
I absolutely agree. In total war PC game it is based only on the graphics not on the gameplay of the campaign map. This franchise will disappear if it does not evolve, it achieves a realistic historical recreation in terms of the number of men in the battlefield The implanted free mod system is nonsense, it should be called - Total Anarchy -

Plase Ankara battle, the captured sultan
What a task it must have been to clean up the battlefield and dispose of the tens of thousands of dead bodies. The severely wounded on both side probably had to be put out of their misery. Imagine the PTSD the battle survivors suffered with.
The way of thinking the ancient people, different with nowadays people.
But yes, you're right about cleaning the battlefield and so on, we can see on Alexander the great movie, many young soldiers, must "put out of misery" By the war doctors
@@Cleeon The Egyptians and Babylonians say the wounded soldiers must be rescued, we need them
@@user-cg2tw8pw7j yes, i ever read from Prophet Muhammad to his friends, that Egyptian, many from them is good people
@@Cleeon I was surprised by the pharaohs that they did not change the beliefs of the Jews while they were controlling Canaan and the Pharaoh Sheshonq the first made Ibn Suleiman prostrate to him and make his people slaves to the pharaoh Sheshonq
@@user-cg2tw8pw7j sorry sir, maybe you still do not understand about ancient religion, but we can see about nowadays Jews, many of them, maybe still have old ways of religion in minds.
Past ago, before Alexander the great, get some enlightenment (hope from the CREATOR) many great men, kings, nobles, and even some prophets.... This one, including Alexander the great teacher himself, Aristoteles.
They believe that true religion, is their own ( and it seems, each nation/tribes have their own variety of religion) and exclusively only for them.
So, Jews/prophet Moses religion is only for Israelites.
Osiris and Horus, only for Egyptian.
Even Aristoteles have some letter with warning to Alexander, reminds him "why you share and taught them, they're not us, they're not Hellenistic people".
Same as, maybe Sumeria will never believe their gods and goddess will care Africans, but Africans have similar in minds.
So, that's it, Persian will never even imagining Ahuramazda for Greek people, same as Odin, as for Nordic warrior, is only for them, and they will shocked if some city in Greek call their highest deity with Odin.
I think, from what I learned, all happening around the time of Alexander the great and in East around the time of Siddhartha Gautama, then people thinking about, if this the truth, why we not share and teach to others.
which mod is this ?
Divide et Impera
Fery best!!! Congrationalsis
Imagine there is no gunpowder, bullets, or rocket invention, and the war still classic just like on this video, you can see this type of war, live on TV news
Hi, do you think it would be interesting to do some kind of battle in the empire?
What do you mean? Do you have any in mind?
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI For example, you can have some kind of battle for American independence, the Seven Years' War, the Russian-Turkish War, or how Britain colonized India
@@filimon9643 good idea. I will see what I can do
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI Thank you
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI In about how many weeks will you be able to make an empire video?
Well done and intriguing to watch. An observation, though, if you don't mind, is the groups were too far apart when spears were thrown. Arrows could fly that far maybe, but not spears. I'd also like letters - 'R' for Romans & 'S' for Seleucid - superimoposed over the groups of combatants as much as possible so the viewer can better keep up with who is moving where. Hard to do, obviously, when in close combat.
Thanks, some good points.
I have a theory as to why the Romans did the triplex formation:
It wasn't so that they could rotate between each other when the time called for it, it was so that they would have a zigzaged frontline which would break up professional enemy lines, where the enemy would charge and their Frontlines would immediately be surrounded.
The Greeks would've fallen victim to this mostly because they fought with static phalanx formations.
And the triarii would be the back up to cover up any holes the enemy would've made and poked them back.
The equities would either attempt to face their cavalry counterparts or be another plugger when there wasn't enough triarii.
Another theory is that they operated somewhat like the squares that was used in Waterloo, where the enemy would charge into the gaps only to find themselves in a deadly maze of swords, shields, and pilas.
The triarii would be the last line to cut down enemies who were bold enough to find their way out of the maze.
Equities would protect the flanks if the enemy decided to wrap around the outskirts of the formation, or charge into the maze like formation and trample the enemies.
The only times where they would rotate is when they face similar units where the Hastati would make a long line with no gaps and the Princeps would swap them out whenever needed.
My second theory would make sense as to why Hannibal was so successful against the Romans, he outright refused to fall for the formation trick and instead attempted to wrap around the Romans.
I just don't know about the second theory. If they formed squares, they would be quite static. When, in fact, the majority of time, their tactic was to push the enemy with heavy force. The only time that didn't work was when fighting phalanx head on, so individual legionaire units were flexible enough to make a decision and wrap around them when their flanks were secure
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI while I agree that they wouldn't be effective as static squares, let's consider that they aren't static and aren't really "squares" and that they still operated individually but still in unison with the other cohorts to guide them into the maze of death.
Now that I think about it the first theory would work well with anyone, and the second one might really work well against unorganized barbaric tribes
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI if I could post detailed drawings in the chat I would lmao
@@tptallen4498 Hannibal is so overrated , yes he won three battles in Italy but he lost the war, he never captured Rome and that’s the only battles he’d won but everyone seems to make him out to be some great strategist , actually when he was confronted by the same general shippione he got destroyed on home soil, at the end he lost everything so where is his greatness? He couldn’t hold the territory couldn’t subdue the romans, he got lucky but then it ran out.

Wonder how the phalanx would have done if the first row was instead heavy sheild and sword.
La Falange tenía que haber sido como mínimo de 22.000Hombres. el inconveniente de esta infantería pesada. Que era efectiva en terreno llano. Pero si el terreno estaba accidentado. Se perdía la cesión de sus tropas y se rompía la fila.

Actually that is false, cavalry at those times all the time entered combat without stirrups or saddles

Tres Líneas. Primero los Hastatis. Segundo. Los Príncipes. Y Tercero los veteranos Triarios.
Who's the Philip guy on the Seleucid side? Was it Philip V of Macedon? If it was, then that's an error. Philip V at that time is a Roman ally. It was his Macedonian army along with Thracian auxiliaries that protected the Roman camp and reinforced the retreating Romans.

the result would be better for Antiochus if he DIDN'T used Chariots & Elephants, but maybe elephants as reserves would be great for him because if either left or right wing collapsed, the elephants should probably stop the Romans to flank Antiochu's forces...
I would also say so
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI thanks for replying bro, keep up the good work and i wait for more battles :D
Why weren't they able to field such massive armies in the middle ages?
More and more people have war weariness, fear, and have no quality as soldiers.
The rich, is not very rich to pay, and the poor is very different with ancient people, at ancient time, poor is not always weak, in fact most of them stronger and have more savage, at middle age, most of the poor is weak.
It's about the condition and how they taught since they was kid. Many ancient religion taught them about bravery, the punishment for enemies, and the glory to heaven promised by war, and at middle age, as you know the peaceful religion is the majority
Generally it was simply because there were far far more nations with little people per nation, thus they couldn’t. That and the culture and societal organization was differant
Historically and graphically educational, but in terms of the number of men it is NO REALISTIC simulation . In the Total War of academy assembly game sou wiill have a reduction factor of 1:6. In other words, where it says that there were 30,000 men in the Roman side, but in the simulation you can barely deploy 5,000 men
There are more than 20,000 men in this simulation.
Los Celtas de Las Islas Británicas. Utilizaban carros en sus batallas. Aparte de caballería e infantería. En Europa. Se había dejado de utilizar los carros en la Guerra. Eran poco prácticos. Tropezaban con piedras y volcaban.
The selucids lost cause of their war elephant and chariots and they didn't deploy a skirmishes screen infront of their phalanx like phyruss , elephants would have been better on the flanks rear skirmishing then later on charing to frighten roman horses
I agree. I think the Seleucids actually could have won this battle with different tactics and formation
This was a poor show of combined arms phalanax only works with combined arms chariots are good against cav but don't commit for the initial charge if you skirmishes
It's Europa Barbarorum 2?
No, it's in the description.
