Macedonia was at this time truly a force to be reckoned with, Phillip learned much from the likes of Epaminondas and Pammenes of Thebes. Phillip turned Macedon from a back water relatively weak and unimportant Greek Kingdom, to the mightiest power in the Hellenic, and known world. Astonishing.

One of my fave battles. I heard Alexander was only 17 here weeks before he turned 18. He had proved himself as a Regent at age 16 when Phillip II left for Byzantine. Sensing the weakness of a teen, some men staged a rebellion. Alexander organized a task force and squashed it, impressing his father and everyone by his leadership and courage and skill. They say he had a magnetic personality and could lead a team well.

200 dead with 2k for the greeks.... actually not that bloody if you do think about it without the movie views creeping in. Civil War, Great War or WW2 battles were worse by far. The real hell scene would have been a city like Tyre, where Alexander put it to the sword after siege. Thousands of men women and children killed, thousands more raped and brutalized with survivors sold as slaves. Makes you long for the comparative safety of the battlefield.

In fact, the Athenians did manage to repel and push back the Macedonian right flank,it was not a King Philip's planned retreat. However the inexperienced Athenian commander in charge made a hasty decision and ordered his flank to pursue the Macedonian right flank, ignoring the warnings of his subordinates who advised maintaining their ground. This misstep was seized upon by Alexander, who capitalized on the opportunity to attack and flank the coalition army without his father's orders.
Realizing their mistake, the Athenians eventually fell back, but it was too late. However, they managed to retreat in an orderly manner. The casualties were relatively low for both sides because Philip, known as a military and political genius (some even claim he surpassed Alexander in this regard), aimed to win the sympathy of his fellow Greeks. He wanted them to support him against the Persian Empire, and he achieved this by demonstrating care for the fallen Athenian and Theban soldiers and releasing the prisoners.Amother reason is that It was always a bad and costly idea to attempt to completely destroy an army of hoplites once they had accepted defeat. Alexander failed to learn this lesson, and he paid the price in the future when he faced a Greek mercenary force fighting for the Persians. After their defeat, these mercenaries offered their services to Alexander, but he decided to eliminate them. In the subsequent battle, he lost more men than he had lost in his entire Asian expedition.

I'm sure they all - or almost all - were engaged in this battle, and yet no mentioning of them in any sources. The Macedonians same like the Persians and Egyptians were considered by the ancient Greex as 'Barbarians' - i.e. foreigners, 'those who don't speak' their language. Truly apart from today politically-biased narratives that promote the 19th century created new identities and nations. Well done indeed!

Only Demosthenes called them barbarians, in an attempt to save the Athenian Republic.
Macedonians were and are only from Greek origin.
They took part in the Olympic games. Only Greeks could participate.
According to ancient texts, they were considered Greeks by the Persians.
They spoke a Greek dialect (proof " the katadesmos of Pella)

Not exactly, The southern Greeks did not look on the Macedonians like they did the Persians and Egyptians. The southern Greeks accepted the Macedonians as 100% Greeks, and the Macedonians themselves proclaimed proudly and forcefuly and insistently that they were Greeks. The term 'barbarian' had many meanings in ancient Greece it also meant Backward and uncivilised and or speaking in a rough and vulgar dialect of Greek. Athenians also called Spartans and Elians barbarians to name but a few. So Macedonians were labelled as backward and uncivilised because they were a monarchy and did not have a Poleis citizen state structure.

No amount of reason will shake modern Greek faith in the Hellenic ethnicity of the ancient Macedonians and their kings. It is more than a political prefer ence: many Greeks see it as a necessity, despite the inconclusive ancient evidence on the nationality of the Macedonians. But recent scholarship has begun to provide a response to old Greek arguments. There is an insufficient amount of evidence-the existence of Greek inscriptions in the kingdom of the Macedonians notwithstand ing-to know what the native language or dialect was. E.g., several dialects of Greek were used in ancient Macedonia, but what was the Macedonian dialect? The evidence of ancient writers suggests that Greek and Macedonian were mutually unintelligible languages in the court of Alexander the Great. Moreover, if contemporary or his torical opinion from antiquity means anything, the ancient world from the fourth century B.C. into the early Hellenistic period-roughly the age of Philip and Alexan der-believed that the Greeks and Macedonians were different peoples. None of which, incidentally, denies that the Macedonians, at least in their court and gentry, were quite highly hellenized, as recent archaeology has clearly shown. See E. Badian, "Greeks and Macedonians," Macedonia and Greece in Late Classical and Early Hellenis tic Times, Studies in the History of Art 10, ed. B. Barr-Sharrar and E. N. Borza (Wash ington, D.C., 1982). 33-51: Eugene N. Borza, In the Shadow of Olympus: The Emergence of Macedon, rev. ed. It's a testament to his brilliance how he was able to not only lead his men, but how he was able to spot the gap in the Athenian and Theban line ans how he knew to order his infantry on the Macedonian right to attack the Athenian and Theban left flank head on while he and the cavalry exploited the gap and attacked the Thebans from the rear. It was a brilliant move that won them the battle.

The unification of course was violent. In Greece/Hellas, there were many different political statues at the time, there were city-states, there were kingdoms too (like the Macedonian kingdom [Μακεδονικό βασίλειο] and the kingdom of Ήπειρος , where Pyrros [Πύρρος] became a king some years later). The re were also Greeks in north Italy and the whole Sicily, usually in city states. Those Greeks were not part of the political unification that Philip and Alexander did, they had their own problems with Romans and Carthage , they did not care about Persia.

In your genius analysis that is proof that people who live in Athens are actually fish. The Macedonians participated in the Olympics. Only Greeks could do that. I always love Total War series but the Rome Total War is one of the best game. This film is really perfect and captures the atmosphere of the wars of that period wonderfully. But I must point out that in this particular battle the Greek army had no cavalry which made the victory of the Macedonian army much easier. I personally really like this period in history. Achievements of Philip 2 and especially his son Alexander the Great was simply epic and for centuries was inspiration for all, including modern generals. Tactic Anvil and Hammer was used by the Alexander also in the last act of the battle of Gaugamela against Persian army when, after forcing the Persian king to flee in the center then he returned with his cavalry to deliver the final blow to the Persian forces. And in this battle he had much complicated goal because Persian army was far bigger than his and they also had quite good cavalry. I always dreamed in Total War games that maybe in future will be possible to fight as a single soldier in first person view. Unfortunately, it never became possible :( But luckily finally the game Bannerlord appeared with first person view on battle. :)
And I personally used the tactic anvil and hammer with devastating effect in one battle in Bannerlord against much bigger army of Battania. Here is the link to that video: ua-cam.com/video/ggf9zu9oTWU/v-deo.html Battle difficulty level was set of course at the max. Feeling of personal fight in the very center of such battle is really incredibly.
I am waiting for next cinematics from your channel :) Best regards
