  • Arminius' ambush at Teutoburg was a colossal military catastrophe and a devastating blow to Rome's pride and power. But Rome was thirsty for revenge. The task fell first to Tiberius and then to Germanicus, a reputed Roman general who distinguished himself in Germania and fought the legendary battle of Idistaviso.

Rome divides and unites. Some people hated the romans Some loved them..that's just the way it is ..they had great resilience..lost a legion in Scotland then built a wall lost to the parthians and hannibal and sparticus .boudicca etc .but still kept going ...even after the goths sacked rome..still they recovered ..says a lot for them as a people...

The Romans didn't lose a legion ( the 9th, also known as Legio IX Hispana) in Scotland around 1068 AD. That is nothing more than a work of popular fiction. Evidence shows that they were (or elements of them) in the Netherlands around AD120, with the generally agreed view they were wiped out fighting the Parthians in Armenia around AD160 - AD166...

The Romans were inspirational and that's why they made such intimidating opponents. The Last Roman Legion- Legio V Macedonica which was founded by Augustus himself in 43 BC- was fighting the Muslims in Egypt in around 630s AD. Imagine fighting a military unit that was around before Christ was even born, when Cleopatra still ruled Egypt. Now that's intimidating. It was said that they held the Roman right flank (flank of honor) and stood strong against the Muslim onslaught, almost routing them before the Romans' own left flank was routed and they were surrounded. But they still held firm and did rear guard action to save many units. The remnants of this army and the Legion would form the backbone of Roman resistance in Egypt but it was not enough.

Varos lost because he led his armies into thick forces on narrow paths and they were extremely stretched out and massing gis troops in the typical Roman formations was impossible. The Germans picked them apart at will. Part of the problem the Romans had was most of them carried the gladius, a very short sword more like a dagger which was ideal in use in formation between shields but not against the long swords of the Germans.
The Romans had a long sword, called a spatha, but only a small percentage of them carried one. After the slaughter of Vairos's legions they all carried spathas when they invaded to get revenge.

The massacre cost the germans more in the long run than it cost the Romans. 20,000 troops compared to several Germanic tribal groups exterminated and several more severely damaged, I think the germans learned a lesson from this. The romans could have gone back over and over to keep doing this but stopped when they thought they had done enough.

Problem is that the Romans, while being able to attack more or less as they wanted, were unable to maintain a permanent presence, and the battle of Idistaviso, while victorious, wasn't decisive.
Rome won like they usually did for much of their history: By industrial power. They had more (well-equipped) plebeians to throw away than most of their rivals had troops, and could lose entire armies just to learn and gain experience, and just tried again and again until they got it right. Most noticeably the western Roman empire fell once it no longer had a surplus of men to serve in the legions, and surplus production to outfit them with.

In fact, after Idistaviso the Romans returned to the old border on the Rhine because there was NOTHING beyond it!!!!
In many of the great battles won by the Romans they were outnumbered by their enemies but they won thanks to the Discipline, Training and Tactical Skills of their Generals....

@johnmiller2822 Were the worst of WW2 says who a 12 yo like you with a degree in UA-cam ?? At most our generals were the worst, not the soldiers praised by Rommel and commander Otto Carius. Also if you are American you had one of the worst asswhooping in all WW2 by Italian Bersaglieri and Ariete division at Kasserine pass . Americans with all their money and weapons were still pretty much considered cowards by many veterans of Ww2 and not only. Known to just hold their positions and to move when in superior number, heavy weaponed or with aviation bombing support. You didn't win anything tactical or because of heroism. That without considering that you had oil and resources compared to Italians who lacked everything. So get off your high horse, that if i'm not wrong you didn't war a serious war since WW2 and ran away everywhere too. Oh and Romans were the best soldiers of every time not just of that time.

The powers of the Imperium were only to be granted to a General by vote of the Senate or by a vote of their troops. These powers gave the General the legal authority to IMPALE their enemies on a wide variety of crosses designed only to prolong death and make it as painful as possible. The Teutoburg massacre so terrified the Senate that they gave Augustus the power of the Imperium ... permanently. And thus, the Roman Empire was born out of the old Roman Republic. Remember this whenever you are tempted to use the word "Empire" to describe a large and lasting organization - the word stands for the authority to impale the enemies of the State. It is a very gruesome word that should never actually be used except in a historical context.

Excellent insight. Of course, language is flexible. “Triumph” is now used as a synonym for victory, but in truth it was a ceremony that solemnized a victory already won under very specific circumstances. I would also note that empires-or rather, Empire-inevitably does precisely what you say, if at least metaphorically.

The Romans killed thousands and burned everything they saw but there was no actual civilization to conquer and nothing of value to take other than slaves. With huge forests to conceal them, the Germanic tribes could resist indefinitely. Fighting the Germanic tribes until doomsday, just to kill them and take slaves, was too much effort (and risk) for too little return.
