Your "action instead of a stitch" analogy was SUPER helpful and makes so much sense.
Glad it was helpful!
Yay, an actual demonstration! I can’t tell you how many patterns offer a tutorial YT on “no stitch,” but never show it and just tell you to not make it complicated. Thank you this is the best clarification!
Glad it was helpful!
YES!
Same! I had never come across someone who actually explained this.
Oh my gosh I’m soooo happy I found you!!!!!!!! THANK YOU
Excellent tutorial. You are a really good teacher. Thank you!
Thank you so so so much!!! You made this so much clearer than any of the other guides! I've been trying to figure this out and you made it so clear! The box=an action! Not a stitch!
You're very welcome!
Using your sample for an example. My knitting in the round has 14 repeats each 14 wide.. My row has 4 no stitchs. So it's 10 stitches and then I start the next repeat pattern. Do I put my marker out at the 14 and carry it around?
I’ve been looking at ravelry patterns and was so confused by the charts. Your video explained it so clearly. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! Best explanation and good to see it knitted👏👏
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Oh my gosh, your explanation of the ‘no stitch’ was exactly what I needed to hear to finally understand my chart. Thank you for making this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much you are fabulous !!
For two weeks I was struggling and breaking my brain with a chart that had blank blocks hahahaha thank you for this video😁🥳
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much!! I have been so confused!!

Excellent! Thank you so, so much. I appreciate the easy to understand explanation. 😍
Thank you, super helpful. I’ve been avoiding charts lol
They can be scary (all those symbols!) but once you try them you'll see they aren't so bad. 😁
You make great points
Yes now that makes sense, thank you very much!!!
Thank you so much! 💖 I had no idea what "no stitch" meant! Your explanation and demonstration was exactly what I needed to understand what was happening! I am so happy🤗 I actually knitted a leaf!💖
Glad it was helpful!

Hi
Thanks so much for explaining what this symbol means. I was truly lost
Thanks so much for the explanation and help
I'm glad it was helpful!
Yes
Thank you so much for explaining the no st symbol so clearly! I couldn't understand it at all but you have made it so simple. I'm a quilter but have lost my sewjo since serious illness last year, and have taken up knitting with no one to help me!
Forgot to say that I'm in Ireland!
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
@@NerdyKnitting I have started my first jumper, colour work, thanks to you!
Thanks for explaining this! I saw this and was so confused 😕 lol but after your explanation, it totally makes sense.
Mine was just referring to where stitches had been and if it didn't put this there the chart would have been resized and that would have been even more complicated 😅
Glad it helped!
You’re a little fast, but a lot of pausing, and watching again, just like a crochet pattern I was trying to follow, it’s dawned on me! 💡thanks!
I know - I talk fast! But I'm glad you had a 'lightbulb' moment - it's wonderful when something that confuses us finally clicks and makes sense! 💡
What happens if the no stitch is in the middle of the chart?
Doesn't matter where it is. Just let your eyes skip over it and do the action in the next box.
Your awesome
I am working on a flat swatch with the first seven rows has six no stitch blocks. I knitted the first row then when I get to the end of the second row, I have six stitches left over before I turn my work. I am stumped of what to do. Please help!
Yes but what about the egg-shaped piece of work as the final outcome? Lovely demo 🙏🏻 but still confused
Sorry, I understand completely now 🙏🏻

This is totally brilliant! Thank you so much! It was really bugging me that I couldn’t figure it out. Question - do you apply the same principal to knitting in the round? Would it be possible to do a video about a chart that is used on a fair isle sweater where you increase in the round? I know that’s a lot to ask.
Thank you so much for the Super Thanks - I really appreciate that! Yes, the same principle applies to knitting in the round and with any type of stitch pattern. I'm sorry, I can't make videos for every request but you should be able to figure it out - it's exactly the same principle.
But then what do we do when we get to a no stich? Because my pattern is has six stitches left. Knit (because it's the right side) or what?
You ignore the no stitch box and just move to the next box in your chart.
I still don't get this. I am working in the round on a hat, and I am on row 39 (near the top) just starting my decreases. I am at one section that has 5 stitches in that part. That section calls for a skp2 on the 3rd stitch, yet I have the no-stitch symbol on either side of the skp2. How am I supposed to make that stitch? And in the rows above, there are long, long sections of the grayed-out no stitch box, on either side of the skp2. Do I just go ahead and knit those stitches before and after the skp2?
Don't knit the stitches before and after the decrease - the gray boxes represent stitches that are no longer there. When you work the skp2 you are taking 3 stitches and turning them into one - so you'll see one box for the decrease and then a box to either side that is gray to represent those stitches that are now gone. Does that make sense?
When you see a gray box ignore it and go on to the next box and do whatever that box tells you to do.
This is the section I am at; K1, gray box, skp2, gray box, K1. So I knit the K1, then I slip or knit the following gray box? Hard to ignore it. Then I have the skp2, which in order to do this, includes the gray box just after that symbol. Then I knit the next stitch. Then above that row, the gray no-stitch zone expands to a multitude of stitches. I think I'll have to go to my LYS to get some hands-on help. I am so confused. Or does that skp2, now move over (to the right) in a sense to the second stitch worked in that row, and I end up with 3 stitches in that section? Thanks for your help and quick reply.
I finally understand! Yay!! It made sense, once someone at my LYS helped me out. I was making it too hard.
My brain finally "gets it". Thank you!
You're welcome!
So when you have no stitch do you still leave it on the left needle? Or do you take it off the needle while you purl the next stitch on the left to right needle?
You don't 'do' anything - it's just a symbol on the chart that's acting as a placeholder. Skip over it and do whatever's next on the chart.
@@NerdyKnitting so does it stay on the left needle the whole time? I find it very confusing it doesn’t make sense just not doing anything
The grey box doesn't mean anything - pretend it's invisible - it doesn't have anything to do with the next stitch on the left needle. Move on to the next box in the chart and do that thing with the next stitch. You're not skipping or moving any stitches.
@@NerdyKnitting so the first stitch I just knit or purl like it says on the next box? I start with what it says after the grey boxes?
Yes. Just pretend that gray box is invisible and doesn't exist.
How do we know to yarn over
The circle symbol on the chart represents a yarn over.
How can I ignore a stitch when it’s there on my needle
You're not ignoring the stitch on your needle - you're ignoring the box. If it's a 'no stitch' box just move to the next box and complete that action with the stitch on your needle.
Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for the Super Thanks! ❤️
