Great video man. As someone that has an A3 DTR Kit, there is slight lag, but once boost hits @4000+ RPM you're gone. This is a great turbo kit to get easy power and still drive OEM. The DTR is fully capable of 11 second 1/4. I have a buddy in Cali with A3 DTR (91 Octane) run 11.64 @119.02. This turbo moves for sure.
So this is stage 3? I’m confused what happened to aprs stage 2?
For a long time I was looking for a Video that explain this DTR Kit like the way you, It was very helpful and a great video.I’m about to pull the trigger on this kit but I still don’t know if really will worth it coming from a IS38 GTI that is my case right now. One of the things I consider putting back the Stock DP, for a DD car I really don’t like very much the added sound of a DP. Once again great video.
Thanks for the video! I've got my parts list and looking forward to installing one of these soon in the next month or so. Got a 2016 SE PP with manual.
Hey just so you know, I have a mk7 golf r running the aprdtr turbo plus a catback and an intake and the turbo is just too much power for the manual clutch to handle
@@domenicdecaro7907 Thanks for the tip. I'm going to upgrade the clutch as part of my build, planning for 425-450lbft to be safe.
Hi great review. I'm getting mine installed next week. Have at 97k miles on my car. Figure I give it extra power vs buying a new car in today market.
how'd it go for you? my cars at 108k mk7 Golf R and kinda scared to do the kit.
This turbo is pretty weak on the APR tune. I know it runs pretty much a 11-12 60- 130. Plenty of is38s are in that same range or even faster on e85.
Mid-10s 60-130 with stock fueling and stock downpipe. Still within IS38 E30 range, but definitely not running 12s.
FYI my car is also the heaviest spec, and has 2 car seats - so I’m sure others out there will run better times.
Thanks for making the video as there are very few for a kit that has sold fairly well. I have the kit on a non PP GTI and like the overall power delivery however would prefer it to come on 1000 RPM sooner.
You can get your wish.
It will just require an aftermarket DP and a protune. Which I know defeats the entire purpose of this kit. But that's one of the compromises you make with this. Stock DP can only flow so much. It's amazing APR was able to squeeze this kind of power out of factory hardware. But at the cost of a laggy setup.
Pick your poison:
Emissions compliant restricted flow 400whp, but laggy
Proper flow 400+whp, but non emissions compliant
If you're really chasing performance, sticking to APR's tune & factory DP isn't it.
@@Peylix Agreed. For some it’s good enough, but if you’ve got the bug for speed the EQT Vortex standard with a downpipe and fueling is the way to go IMO.
My guess is the APR turbo will probably cap out at ~450whp even with all the supporting mods and a custom tune.
@@CarbonDub the 6054 has a ton of headroom. I think the max is somewhere in the mid 500’s possibly low 600’s depending on fuel etc. EQT does tunes for this turbo as well
Lemme ask this. Would U give up about 20-30whp and wtq and the slight lag for an Apr is38 stock dp tune that would allow for peppier in city acceleration?
Short answer, no. DTR doesn’t feel noticeably less peppy than stage 1 under normal driving conditions.
Also I believe it’s more like a 50-60whp difference between the DTR (406whp) and IS38 with stock DP (345whp). Plus the cost for IS38 plus a tune is pretty similar if not more than the DTR kit which includes the tune.
@@CarbonDubjust ordered mine LOL! I hope it’s still peppy on part throttle
@@CarbonDub right. Dtr needs maybe 5% more throttle and doesn’t feel laggy in the city. Definitely doesn’t accelerate with that is20 crack head energy. But it sure wasn’t laggy
Buddy went out of town and left his eqt stage 1 car so I can start her every few days. I drove it around the other day. Just to get a charge back in the battery. I accidentally gave it the throttle I give my dtr and that bitch flew fwd LOL
Anywho, thanks again for your videos bro. Your info really helped me pull the trigger
@@SheekTresSesenta9 months later, I’m in your exact situation comparing is38 stock dp and dtr lol, how do you like it??
@@ishanebrowni love it! No regrets at all! It's great when people talk down on the dtr. Then lose after a roll. Or lose out of the hole. Their whole perspective changes and everyone stays real quiet lol. The best races are against the guys with stock dp and vortex lol.
How has your reliability been so far? I drive somewhat like how you do, rarely doing pulls. Also, do you know if the tuning software has an option for someone with a DP already installed? Thanks!
Reliability on stock downpipe over the past year has been solid.
I actually just installed an APR catted downpipe with an O2 spacer out of curiosity to see the performance impact. Only ~500 miles so far but no issues or CEL.
FWIW, it is definitely quicker with a downpipe, even with the same APR tune.
Dope upload
How bad did it affect your mpg? Or what do you get now ?
Honestly I think it gets better mpg than when I was stage 1 since the turbo spools slower. My average is around 21 city / 32 highway.
Really putting around and staying out of boost I’ve gotten 36mpg highway… but that’s no fun lol.
Great video
Quick question I have a FMIC and a stock inter cooler. I’m thinking of getting this turbo . Do I need to replace the stock Inter cooler ?
Your “twintercooler” should be fine, no need to replace the stock location in addition.
Maybe it's me but when I was running the Awd tune it felt much more responsive. And yes did have the fwd tune 1st. That being said I think I'll go back to the Awd tune rather than the custom EQT tune.
The only way I’d switch to EQT is if I did full fueling with MPI an e-blend and added a downpipe, since APR doesn’t support any of that for the GTI. Otherwise you’re paying hundreds for an AP + tune to likely find 10-15whp (my best guess).
@@CarbonDub your not wrong. In my experience with the eqt tune you reach boost faster mind you I do have full bolt on and from the apr tune I know it faster with the eqt tune and fbo. But honestly you can run a EQT vortex with a tune that is emissions ready and get better numbers than with the DTR 6054 and apr tune. If I could do it all over again I would have just went with the EQT vortex turbo you get more out of it and it can be tuned to pass emissions with a stock down pipe.
@@CarbonDub I will say this if you do buy a downpipe you'll feel a major difference. With your current setup.
@@anthonymcclelland8433 No doubt, same tune with a downpipe would probably widen the low-end powerband by 1k rpm.
That's because the FWD map has a handicapped torque curve to aid in traction. AWD file is without that, so It's gonna feel a tad more responsive.
It's not just you. It's why everyone has been recommending to run the AWD file whether you have the R or the GTI.
Does the kit come with the DSG tune or is that extra?
DSG tune is extra and not included with the kit - the ECU tune is included in the kit price.
I already had the standard APR DSG tune so I didn’t pay to reflash to the DTR DSG tune.
Hey bro, I live in Laurel and I'm picking up a MK7 R on Monday for a daily....great vid, thanks for the input! Do you have a shop you recommend in the area that does great work on these cars for these mods?
NGP does good work check them out
@@joshuab8011 Thanks, in researching around I did discover them, so it's good to hear from someone giving them a reference!
@@matthewjacobs7123 For sure , I had them put my south bend stage 2 clutch in my mk6 gti and did apr stage 2 flash and pendulum mount . They did it in hours so yeah they are pretty official . My mk7.5 is what I moved onto and I haven’t seen them since they closed the Lorton Va location and moved to Manassas but they can even do work through certain types of auto warranty . Honestly you cannot go wrong with NGP talk to Greyson or anyone there really.
@@joshuab8011 NGP did my install and does my APR flashes.
Have it reflashed with the test pipe version of the APR software and go catless
What test pipe version? You mean get a custom tune? APR doesn't offer test pipe files anymore.
Ugh they used to…damn Holley
@@Timbo1969 yeah. It's unfortunate because the tune feels great, but the pick-up from a stop could benefit from a downpipe.
@@Azula7.5R there’s always EQT if you have an access port
@Timbo1969 yeah, that may be the plan in the new year
I’ve seen you floating around va
Unrelated but please learn how lanes work, move over to the middle lane you're blocking the flow of traffic. Great video regardless, I appreciate your insight on this kit.
Subbed... so we are in the same boat. I've been stage I APR for over 50K miles on my 2015 GTI SE DSG and I was thinking of going IE stage 2+ or stage 3.... but maybe instead I'll just get the APR DTR6054 and a Big Brake Kit. Maybe an Intercooler also... then throw some new exhaust tips on 4" ones from APR and be done with it.
I have the IE intake and Turbo Inlet already though... now I'm torn. Thanks for the video... hows the kit holding up? Did you upgrade the spark plugs? I'm about to replace mine and wondering which ones I should get.
Kit is holding up great, still a ton of fun. I was running the NGK r7437-9 plugs, just switched to the APR ones about 500 miles ago. No issues with either.
Did the engine pop?
No, just taking some time off from posting stuff. Adding a few goodies and doing a tune up next week.
Edit: I did have a ring land failure that resulted in replacing the block last year but autopsy determined it wasn’t related to the kit, so I left that out of the review. Car is fine now.
@@CarbonDub buying this kit after I install my intercooler. Thanks for the info, I was getting nervous about the absence lol. It's gonna be interesting to see how this kit does with a manuals long ass gears compared to a dsg.
No more videos?
Been busy with work lately. Still enjoying the kit though!
@@CarbonDub good to hear bro!
Psssst, stop squating in the left lane. It's for passing, not for being passed....
what's up bro how long do you do from 0 to 60 ???
S l o w. I just spin, best to date is 5.36s
@@CarbonDub 5.2 not so bad this turbo works better in rolling race another question bro after installing this stock turbo you cant do a stage 1 like with the is 20 turbo
