    Very imformative video. Thank you very much. I have a 2012 that dosn't start. The cam shaft is moving so I don't think thats the problem but how do you know if there's a wet belt or chain to the fuel pump. Is there any signs on the outside or is it surprice moment when open up the engine?

    I was entertaining notions of checking the belt myself until about 3 minutes into your vid...off to the mechanic she goes! WAY beyond my abilities.
    Great video, really enjoyed seeing some of intricacy involved in all this

    Old video I know but helpful, thank you. I am doing the belt on my connect 2010 and wondering whether it might have a chain already. What info did you find out from Ford? Did they start fitting chains again after a certain date or do you think yours had already been converted to chain by a previous owner?

    Are you using the tiger grip gloves, they are really good. Seem to last a lot longer than norml nitrile gloves. Only problem is even the extra large are a bit small.

      Very similar gloves called gripster. long lasting gloves which are harder to rip than the normal ones.

    I have a 2013 connect I had the same information for mine that I had a belt . before I replaced the belt I had to replace the valve cover gasket and while the cover was off I noticed the drive belt was actually a chain.

    just did this exact job on my ford focus 1.8 TDCI, used a jack underneath rather than over head engine hoist, didn't lock cam, just marked diesel pump and used TDC marker, biggest pain on my car was getting the serpentine belt on, think its a stretch fit, but I didn't have the tool had to push down on the removed water pump pulley to get it on, all running great now, also the alternator is a bitch to get off on the Focus as they have the extension pulley, really hard to get to the mounting bolts for the Alternator.

    I am rebuilding the front of a Transit Connect 2012 ... radiator, A/c Condenser and Oil Cooler, plus Core Support, both grills and hood. I picked the vehicle up after the driver rear ended another car. no other damage.
    What I've learned;
    1) The design of this vehicle shows ZERO consideration for Maintenance costs as, although the parts are reasonably priced, even "basic repairs" like changing the water pump or the timing belt require HOURS OF LABOR to disassemble SO...MANY.... OTHER... COMPONENTS...... because there is ZERO...room to do ANY ... job...
    2) I bought the vehicle to rehab and then give to a sister. But I can see that even basic MX will be beyond my level of patience.... ( not ability) soooo
    3) There is no way in HELLLL that my family will keep, own, operate this vehicle.
    When a water pump is an eight hour job...... no
    When this thing is back together.... It's getting sold...
    Ooooops update...... lets spend three hours getting in to the job to find out that Ford's data sheets dont track timing chains vs timing belts.
    This vehicle is a maint cost nightmare.... it doesnt matter if the block, bearings, crank, cam, rings and valves will last 200,000 mi..... if the accessories EACH ( Alternator, timing belt, water pump etc) cost $1000 in labor..... at 120k miles...DUMP THIS VEHICLE AT THE FIRST SIGN OF ....A...N...Y..... problems....... or.... replace everything the first time you go in... ($2500)........ or just spring $6000 to replace everything .... long block plus all accessories.

    Alright Gerard I’ve got a 1.8 2005 connect and my crankshaft pulley seal is leaking how do u get the crankshaft pulley bolt off I’ve tried the air gun on it but had no affect

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  6 років тому +2

      Not joking, you need a better air gun :) I have a 3/4 inch air impact for the very worst crank bolts whilst also using a wide bore airline, I have no other answer for you other than that.

      Sometimes things like this happens, and when it happens i always very happy that i didn't order the parts before disassembling it.

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  7 років тому +2

      The parts don't worry me as with our suppliers they will take them back for credit no issue (special order from dealer different story) I contacted parts suppliers again today and they stated that there is wet belts listed prior to 2008 on connects. If this is the case that only 08 onwards have it, then a lot of suppliers do not have correct info and again I rang the dealer before I carried out the job and they also confirmed it had a wet belt. Very confusing.

    • @-Iceray-
      @-Iceray- 7 років тому

      But you can replace your wet belt with a chain correct? Maybe some one prior to you just swapped it for a chain.

  • @mack1609

    great videos. if that belt breaks would the valves get belt or is that belt just work the fuel pump

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  6 років тому

      Thanks :)
      If the belt breaks it can damage the valves, these engines are well known for damage should failure of the top or bottom belt/chain break.

    • @Mirandasrooter
      @Mirandasrooter 6 років тому

      I hope I'm doing this right as far as coming in your video you said the center bolt of the tensioner to take off the belt was a 15 mm it's a 13 mm

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  6 років тому

      As I can't remember I'll just say this, Tensioner bolts can have different head sizes, example a Dayco kit might have a 13mm while a new Gates kit could have a 15mm as part of there kit. It doesn't matter either way so nothing to worry about.

    Dear Gerard. I have an engine 1.8 tdci, QYBA and i have a problem with an oil leak. Oil leaks around metal gasket between engine block and timing chain casing in the same position as a bolt for crankshaft locking. Can you tell me please how can we change the gasket? Do we have to remove also the lower oil pan to disconect oil pump hoses? There is also a chance that bolts under chain are loosen. In that case do we still need to replace the gasket or just tight them up to specified torque? If you have any a little time i would be happy if you send me any advice on my email humar.stojan@gmail.com. Many thanks.
