    Hey Marty sorry to hear you went through all that drama. My alternator also failed twice. I got lucky that both times were in my driveway. The first time I replaced the original alternator with an Autozone part. A year later it failed but they replaced it no questions asked. If it fails again I will go with the Denso part. The good thing now is that I can replace the alternator with one eye closed and my left hand tied to my back 😜. Keep up the awesome videos!

    this happened to my 08 lexus is350 at 110,000 miles even though it was required to be changed at 90,000 miles, crazy how long it lasted and the best part after i replaced it, the car went back to driving driving normal as usual to this day at 149,000 miles end goal hoping to meet 300,000 miles and I bought my alternator from advance auto parts

    Same thing happened to my is350. Had to replace it 3 times and eventually got the Denso and had no problems after that. Working well for 3 years now. Denso was the only one rated for 150amps, the other aftermarket were 130amps and failed.

    Dealing with the alternator failing on me on my 08 is350. I've had it 5 years though and this is my first time replacing it. I've been driving Lexus cars my whole adult life basically and always do my own work and yes you ALWAYS want to use OEM parts. Don't ever listen to the guys at your local auto parts store because they don't have those parts and will sell you "equivalent" parts that won't work.The IS350 is a solid reliable car if you take care of it, not to mention it's fun!👍

  • @damonsters47

    Also forgot to answer your end of video question. Yes, OEM is usually always the way to go, especially big main components like the alternator. Cheap stuff you can go aftermarket like spoilers, headlights, headlight housing, taillights, etc. Also, the regular 2GRFE had a oil cooling leak problem which had a recall, not sure if the same thing happened with the 2GRFSE... id make sure your recalls are all up to date.

    Hey Marty and Subs! I recently replaced my alternator on my 2007 IS250 6spd this January myself. My oem alternator lasted 95k/miles. I’ve also had the IS since 2013 so 6 years to date from 40k/miles. So far the car is running good but does have a few things needed to be done. My back suspensions are going out. My clutch was also changed a week after I got my IS; thankfully I bought the Lexus buyback warranty and I ended up paying $700 ontop a $7000 job at the time, crazy snitz!!! I’ve started watching your channel and wonder how, and if I should start doing vids too. You have some great infos. Peace out bro!

I have a 2010 IS350 with about 60K on it, only the battery was changed in 2017, everything else is original. So many comments that others are also having alternator issue, I've just ticked over 100,000kms in my 350 (62,000 miles for my American friends) and as far as I'm aware I'm still using the original OEM alternator that was fitted in Japan. Through some research to double check my Takata airbags had actually been replaced in Japan before it was imported to NZ and it hadn't slipped through the gaps, I discovered it had 3 other recalls completed too: 1) VVT-i cam pulleys were replaced. 2) Fuel pressure regulator was replaced and fuel rail resurfaced. 3) Valve springs were replaced, which would have likely been a heads off job so fairly major. Any idea if these same recalls were made to the USDM models like they were in Japan?

    Thanks for highlighting one of the few flaws in the 2is-at least a flaw from my perspective. I bought my 2009 is250 about a year ago from a used car dealer, and the alternator went out a couple days later. I just wanted to mention to your followers that most alternators I found being sold from reputable places (Lexus dealership, autozone, Napa, rock auto, etc) are actually remanufactured Denso alternators. Each store and brand may have different levels of quality, but since they are all remans, there’s risk of them not lasting. If you can find a true brand new OEM, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was priced $700+. Because of this, I went with one of the major auto part stores, offering a lifetime warranty. I figure if I get unlucky with the one they sold me, then at least I can get a replacement same-day and I won’t have to pay for another one.

    If OEM is so reliable, why do they fail so often in the first place?
    I had a similar story, with my alternator failing two days after purchasing my GS350.
    It was logical to get the refurbished unit, since it was less than half the cost with a lifetime warranty. I did the labor, which was easy except for the hidden bolt located behind the alternator.
    Thanks for the video.

    My wife's 2008 Lexus IS 250 alternator just went out. With no warning, the car started smoking from where the alternator is. Later on, the car was dead. Towed to the shop and $1100.00 later, we have a new alternator and battery. They also discovered that the plastic radiator is cracked, so that pushed the bill up to $1700.00. I don't know what brand alternator they put in, but it has a two year warranty, so if I don't get 157,000 miles out of this one, then hopefully it goes out before the two year warranty expires.

    hey, Marty great videos/channel you have. makes me want a is myself . can you possibly make a video of maintenance/ potential cost of owning . for example my buddy bought a 2004 Lexus ls430 and his few complains he has are first its nearly impossible ($$$$$) to customize/ upgrade his sound system because it has a Mark Levinson system and amp . then one of the brake lights went out and tried to replace himself only to find out he has to replace the whole light its an enclosed LED he can't just buy a bulb and the light cost 200$. and I am sure there are more expensive small repairs to come. that's why I ask if you can make a video maybe sharing some of those small repairs you maybe came across that are more pricey than normal cars. considering purchasing an is350 myself. if you can it would be a great help.

      I got mines at 85k and drives as smooth as my girlfriends Honda Accord sport 2016 at 30k miles. When you get yours I recommend you do a brake job, get a new battery, oil change, change the hid bulbs and make some custom holes in your intake for better sounding acceleration. If you want to go the extra mile get a new alternator, bleed the coolant preferably by a pro, and clean the throttle body so that you can truly feel the quickness this car. Most of these things you can do yourself just buy online for 40% the cost. In total you should not spend more than $300 if you do it yourself just learn from UA-cam as I did.

    Doing the alternators on these cars are actually a real pain in the ass. Has like 8 bolts hiding all around it. Got to move the ecu out of the way get bolts from the bottom, top, side, hiding in narrow openings only accessible with a wrench. Even with a lift its a pain in the ass. 200$ is fair haha.

    Gonna go out on a limb and guess you didn't get the car though a lexus/toyota dealer, and that "warranty" is some third party job. I also sure as heck wouldn't have bought a battery the same day after leaving the dealership unless they specifically said it needed to be replaced and that was rolled into the price of the vehicle. Personally I would have done the alternator myself and came away with $200 more in pocket, or made the dealer you bought it from install the denso part using the warranty and comp the labor to fit within the $500 limit.
    OEM generally is the way to go, that being said OEM =/= buying from the dealership. Find out what company originally made the part, and buy it off rock auto etc. With Toyota products its generally going to be Denso or NGK for electronics, Aisin for most mechanical parts like pumps, clutches etc etc. I use to run the parts department at a Toyota dealership for a few years, and trust me its not the individual dealerships bending you over price wise; that comes from national/international. I couldn't come close to rock auto's pricing for identical parts even at dealer cost.

    • @MartyMotoring
      @MartyMotoring  5 років тому +2

      Yeah unfortunately I got the car at a used car dealer, and they sent the car out to their “guy” to replace the alternator in the first 30 days.
      It is a 3rd party warranty, yeah.
      I had to replace the battery right then and there because it was my only car and only way to get home. It was a bad situation, but they gave me $100 back for the $98 battery.
      I didn’t know I needed to use a Denso alternator at the time when it first got replaced. :(
      This time around, I brought it to the Lexus dealer which wasn’t the cheapest route, because I thought the warranty would cover it all. And towing it from one city to another wasn’t feasible, which is why I just paid the difference and had the Lexus dealer do it - and got the 12 month part and labor warranty along with that.
      True. It’s hard to beat Rock Auto or anything online really. Dealership is usually my last resort

    • @Canuckrz
      @Canuckrz 5 років тому

      Good to hear they reimbursed you for the battery at least. Those third party warranties quite often can be more of a headache than they are worth as they don't really have anyone to hold them responsible like an in house warranty at a dealership.
