Roman is saving Tommy from rolling the Jeep and getting hurt. Tommy is saving Roman from having a heart attack over worrying about Tommy. That's how family works.
This fight between Roman and Tommy is exactly what I watch TFL for. You guys don't know how much I could work with my father.
I go to my dad and say hey I tried this restaurant… your just wasting you money… this guy is a multi millionaire who goes to the food banks…. Scum to be honest
Fathers & sons…
I’d be afraid to call my wife too.
Thank god that stuff isn’t edited out. Those are the best parts.
People actually need to see this video. Many out there think just because its a JEEP, it can go anywhere. Too many people try these offroad trails with ill-equipped rigs or not enough experience. Bad things can happen. GREAT VID TFL.
And conversely, many people don't take their jeeps out to places that are appropriate to learn what their vehicle can do.
it's so interesting watching what matt's off road recovery does, with their custom, purpose built vehicles and then what this channel does, with their much more stock vehicles, and less experienced off roaders. Makes me realize as a noob myself, with very stock vehicles, what's realistic to cope with compared to those with a lifetime of experience, trail repair skills, and custom built rigs.
I wish the two channels would do a collaboration. I'd love to see TFL do a deep dive in the highly modded vehicles Matt's Off Road Recovery uses.
Got to respect the fact that when dad says time to turn around, it’s time to turn around.
Man takes street version of Wrangler on street tires to hard trail to prove you don’t need lockers, disconnecting sway bar and trail tires and proves that you need lockers, disconnecting sway bar and trail tires. Great, entertaining and educational video!
'need' is relative, I think. Probably good to have all that stuff on kelly flats. That said, you could do nearly as well with BLD, cooper discoverers at 20psi, and a couple of 18MM wrenches to 'manually' disconnect the sway bar.
True, but you also made my point. The Coopers and manually disconnected sway bars are off road traction tire and disconnecting sway bar. 😃 Yes the Wrangler BLD is pretty good but lockers would make the vehicle’s movement smooth and much safer.
They will do really well just with a good AT tire. I think Tommy’s mistake was the tire. His idea of stock “cheap” Jeep being very capable is still valid.
Tires were the main issue
I could feel Roman’s pain. I don’t blame him one bit. I couldn’t put my son in a situation like that. Roman and I are almost the same age so I know where he’s coming from. Don’t be too mad at him Tommy, you’ll see one of these days.
Agree. We wheel our Jeep and I wouldn't risk a situation like that with our children aboard. I could see Tommy was a bit disappointed when Roman mentioned going back down the hill. Now when they do conquer it, it will be a satisfying feat! I REALLY like this Cheap Jeep series.
Having done heart attack hill many times you guys are crazy for taking a bone stock highway tire rig up there...AND I LOVE IT! 😂😂
To Roman’s credit, it’s always better to leave the casino before you bust than after. Not a decision that will make you mr popular but one that guarantees the safety of your kid. Good on you
@@ianberry5562 Perfectly stated. Like Roman, I have one son and while I like him to be adventurous I do not encourage unnecessary risk. The point of the vid wasn't to seriously risk injury. The limits of the Jeep with stock tires was shown.
I love these TFL videos. Father and son taking on a big challenge, having disagreements, taking the adventure together. This is one of the best videos yet.
Even though the trip was cut short I think you successfully demonstrated the capability of the jeep even with the limitation of God awful tires. You successfully tackled obstacles the majority of jeeps built out or otherwise would never attempt. Didn’t have an easy time doing it, but to that point it did it.
You absolutely made the right call there Roman! As someone who's rolled a Jeep and a Toyota I can tell you it happens so fast you're not even gonna know what happened. The tires were bad for sure but I think that jerky brake lock diff bs is what would've ruined your day. Gotta be smooth!
There’s not one smart off-roader who will bitch at you for choosing safety over cinematic shots. You can always fight another day
Being the fud that I am, I was glad to see Roman recognize the cheap jeep had reached its limits. I’d much rather see disappointment than catastrophe! On to some simple mods and better capability!
Great job dad!!!!!! Gotta keep the fun times safe!!!!
Even though it was cut short, I believe we've got a very good idea of how good the traction control is and how bad those tires are. Thanks for the effort. You guys are awesome!
I'm with Roman on this one. It was already sketchy enough, and seems obvious that you'd be pushing the Jeep to only get stuck a bit further up, if not worse. Get some better tires and then try again. All of that said, you guys at TFL truly put out some quality content for us. Cheers!
There’s no reason for anyone to roast you in the comments. Huge credit where credits due for showing the limitations of stock OEM street tires and how important the proper tire can be. After you get tires and some sway bar disconnects, I’d love to see you go back and show the difference. Can’t wait to see more on this series!! Also, being a father myself, I totally understand Roman’s freak out…lol Keep it up guys! Great video.
"Who's gonna call mom if the Jeep rolls with you in it?" 😂
Reminder that Roman is Tommy’s Dad before everything else. All of his instincts to protect his child kicked in.
Roman, don’t be deprecating. Taking it on stock tires was a GREAT idea! Thank you, and Tommy.
This is the TFL I like.
What this shows is exactly where not to take a stock Jeep. So as an example of this, this is great. Because some individuals will buy a Jeep like this with unrealistic expectations of where they can go and thus get in trouble on the trails as a consequence. This helps show some of these limitations, so I am glad you demonstrated these limitations so well.
There are 100 subaru owners saying I would have drove right up that with no problems.... RIGHT no way
All subaru owner secretly want to be jeep owners
Subaru does at least put all terrain tires on their vehicles
Did pretty well with those tires, throw some A/Ts on there and try it again...
I think you accomplished what you set out to do....show the limitations of a stock Jeep on street tires. You took it farther than most people would. Good call on bagging this trip and come back with better tires and a 2" lift next time.
Yeah that was a crazy trail for that jeep.
I was actually impressed with what you did on the stock jeep. A "9" rated trail is not a fair match for almost any stock vehicle, especially with smaller, stock street tires, and no factory lift. If you gave that thing some good all terrain, larger diameter tires, a 2" lift, and manually disconnected the sway bars - it would go a lot of places.
Thanks for this demonstration showing the limits of a stock base model jeep wrangler with Street tires.
REAL off-roading. This one gets a thumbs up.
I think it's great that you guys stopped and turned around. I am just starting my offroading journey and it is something I am keeping in mind. If either myself, the Jeep or the tires are not able to do it, then I will be stopping and turning around.
As Roman said it, it's supposed to be fun. Once it stops being fun, turn around and try another day or another trail.
Awesome video guys!
I'm glad you didn't cut out the reality of deciding to call it a day for safety sake, and turn around. And the handling of both Tommy and Roman. Yall are great, I really like this Cheap Jeep series.
Discretion is the better part of valor.
You took a Jeep repelling.
This video is a perfect opportunity for a tire company to show off the difference in their product can make. I would run the exact same trail again but with good tires and no other changes.
The guy in red shirt needs to stop giving directions next time. wrong angle to start with!
I love the idea of bouncing around on a bone stock Wrangler, which is exactly how I would buy it! But I would never take it on a trail that difficult, lol.
Having a Gladiator Sport, I was able to get up just about anything CO through at me without issues... However, while I had open diffs, I made sure to get a 3.5" Lift, Sway bar disconnects, and BFG KO2 - 37's, to make sure I consistently had good contact with the ground and the clearance to not worry about obstacles. The few times I picked up a wheel I had the traction to keep me planted where I wanted to be. Tires, Articulation, Clearance. In that order with a sport.
good build, i did the same but 2.5 and 35s, and really, it just ended up being too big of a truck for my tastes off-road and I'm back to a 2 door sport again. One thing I would recommend to people that has been amazing are Eaton Truetrak LSDs front and rear. Its like having an automatic locker that only works when you want it, and I only get a tiny amount of binding on pavement when turning full left or right.
The videos featuring Roman and Tommy are my favourites.
Same here, It's the classic TFL recipe for a good video
Dad pulled the plug and that's it! No more fun today. He did it till he couldn't. Buy tires and come back. That was my first mod!!
On the first obstacle it would have went right up your spotting sucked lol.
Good call on stopping it there. it got really sketchy lol but man that bone stock jeep honestly did better than I thought
Tommy needs to understand that his Dad doesn't need to prove that he has balls! Tommy is proof of that!🤣🤣🤣
That's what Dads do, Tommy!
He’s only son. I respect Roman some people are not lucky enough to have one.
Man, I really want to see a cheap jeep AND a cheap Bronco series. Enjoying the series!
James, so this is the trail you want me to do Sunday on my almost stock 4Runner TRD Pro (just 285s, skid & sliders)? Just kidding. May be I'll give my credit card again to Hugo and let him build another build for me. It was soo awesome to meet you sir.
I'm impressed by how well that BLD actually did with those cheap tires.
I prefer to buy this jeep, just as it is (30K base price, no thrills) and let ME build it up so it can tackle this and other trails......I don't need the 60K 70K 80K add on......Awesome Roman, keep it safe!
Where is Ralph Nader? Jeep should not sell an off-road vehicle with those tires!! Thanks for sharing hopefully is good demonstration for others to spend a little extra for safety.
People are still driving Corvairs. He has to finish that job first.
@@old_guard2431 corvair fixed the problem before his book even came out soo...
With an 18mm wrench and 5 minutes of time, you could disconnect the sway bar links and get proper Jeep capability out of the cheap Jeep. Maybe could be a subject for a future episode?
What was interesting to see was just how well that “brake lock differential” was actually distributing power to the different wheels. I found it fascinating to see just how well it was working.
And yes, it’s always better to use discretion than push to the point of no return and then just a little past. When the thrill of victory instantly changes into to agony of defeat. The steepness of that terrain could have made for a real nasty ride.
Safety first! You'll understand when you have kids, young man. May I please request that you try this again when you get some ATs on it? Fascinating.
Lol that turn around vs not debate was pretty funny, and eerily familiar 😅
The good thing is this is an opportunity to get some sick tires and wheels
I always consider what Bill the Jeep has today vs what people had 50+ years ago when making these trails. We get accustomed to what machines can do or can't do with modern advancements, but bring the right skill and knowledge into things, that Jeep can and should be very very capable compared to the best off roaders of yesteryear. Tires are probably the most limiting factor. I'd love to see what did a 1960s period correct modified offroader look like and perform. That would be a sight to see.
I have this exact build out but in a 4dr. I’ve done some things to make my life easier but fellas… the difference a disconnected sway bar makes is incredible. Yes you have to get down in the dirt to do it on a sport but this would have been a much different video. Just my two cents, don’t hate me please. Also love the content you and your dad do. It makes my heart happy.
Tommy Dad is right on this one.
I like the silly sidewall grabbers on those clearly on-road tires 🤣
Parking the Jeep on a hill that it could barely climb and then walking around behind it is not a wise move at all.
Tommy is still at the indestructible stage. I remember those days. Lots of fun, and no internet to prove anything lol
Keep fighting the good fight for budget off-roaders 🤙 Get some more appropriate tires and this little Jeep is more than capable.
Classic Dad Son moment
And for those who've never done it, backing down a very steep hill like that. Hill is terrifying. Turning around on that Hill would be terrifying.
That little jeep did way better than it should have. I hope you do this trail with better tires to show the difference. Roman, in no way should you feel bad for calling it. I can only imagine how you were struggling watching the whole thing. Tommy, you're A good man and I hope one day you have a son and you will understand your father perfectly.
18:50 youth vice wisdom hard to put smarts on young shoulders
This is great! I have notifications on and will be waiting for the next one. Also totally agree with Roman, yes you want to have fun, you want to see what the vehicle can do, but you absolutely want to be safe. Good job all around with driving technique & filming. Looking forward to seeing what better tires will do for this Jeep.
As a dad, I understand Romans worries for his only kid. At the end of the day, you want everyone home safe. Good call there "Dad".
A good driver is a driver with the same number of returns as outbounds. Good decisioning!
Incredible how well the cheap Jeep actually did! The BLD really helped, adding lockers I'm sure would have helped more. Better(and bigger?) tires would have helped, obviously. Would just improved tires have enabled it to make it up? Great real world video!
18:40 Kids am I right? They think they’re invincible 😂
But really great video! I really enjoy your content!
Never ceases to amaze me how people use their daily drivers this way. If you want to offroad on these sorts of trails, why not do it in a 25 year old jeep worth $12? I genuinely don't understand the thought process. You'll have so much more fun not worring about a fender or the paint.
Where is Nathan and his heavy foot when you need him?! Can't wait for the upgrades and redemption video 🤙
Bought my RAM at Granger, and the entire process was smooth and awesome...all done from my phone too!!!! Oh did I mention they give amazing deals too!!? I am so pumped to see them partnering with y'all so they hopefully can get exposure to become the #1 seller in the nation!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for sharing
There's a limit, and you found it. I'm surprised how far you made it actually. I can't wait to see what just adding some good tires will do.
That was the most harrowing video I've watched in a long time. MY butt was puckered for them. Whew.
Loving this series! So relatable. Keep it going. ✌🏼❤️😊
Thank you! Will do!
It makes me feel old to see a tire that is 31.47" referred to as "small." Compared to the 27.88" tall ^.00 x 16 NDT's I run on my CJ-2A, they're massive.
If a little stock Jeep with small street tires can do that good I'm buying one!
I would love to see this Jeep with better tires and unbolt the front sway bar before going on trail for the "manual sway disconnect" method. Bill would be massively capable with just a few little upgrades.
Please stay tuned 😉
Agree 100%. A couple of mods that anyone taking it offroad would do and it can still be cheap but capable.
You almost never see old guys rolling sideways down the mountain.
First thing you need is a front sway bar disconnect. You can put any tire you want on but if it’s not touching the ground it does not make any difference.
I really enjoyed this video guys, please do another one with the bare bones Jeep with good tires! You guys definitely made the right decision there, good job!!
Roman you are right. The DAD in you says stop. 🙏🏽
Time to mount a portable Inclinometer in your vehicle so you know how steep the trail or ramp is. You could test tires on a ramp to see when you lose grip or compare tire pressures
Awesome video from an awesome team! Very entertaining dad son convo and excellent review showing what a stock cheap jeep can and can’t do. Good call dad :)
Thanks! 👍
The father was right to get off the hill. Anyone else coming up was also at risk. Would have loved it if they made only one mod with proper tires.
can we talk about how much Tommy is looking like his dad?
I’d love to see you run it again but this time with some sway bar quick disconnects, a slightly larger more aggressive tire and maybe a small 1.5” budget boost.
Please stay tuned!
@@TFLoffroad Might I suggest just getting the highline fenders and take offs with 33s?
Stopped the video at 9 minutes to say I am impressed with the Jeep. The machine wanted to do it, it was just held back by tires. That said, if you were willing to bash it, it would have made it! That I didn't expect.
Heart Attack Hill is a comfortable stable climb in something like a Power Wagon... but in a really short wheel base vehicle like a 2dr Jeep, even with lockers and good tires, it is definitely an expert drive. Things can (and have!) gone bad really quickly for vehicles like that up there.
Just put some Thunderer Rangers on my Xterra and have to say these tires are amazing, great off-road traction and super quiet on the road (very close looking to the KO2's) And that is a fact jack tires can make or break a fun day !!! Thanks for sharing !!!!!!
Good call Roman. Come back another day with some bigger/better tires and a winch!
All terrain tires would definitely be a game changer. My base 2022 Wrangler came with Michelin all seasons, which I sold and put on all terrain tires. Nice video guys, well done.
Hey Tommy, listen to your dad, that’s wisdom talking 👍
Dad's are smarter for a reason. It's because we've done all of the dumb things already.
Good video, and I support your decision to use the stock tires for the first run.
PSA…..Your Honda Civic can’t do that!!!! First Mod for track car, cross country runner, off roader. Tires!!! Thank you Roman and Tommy for showing people how important tires are.
Nobody is yelling at them in the comments. . . Good folks, good content, don’t want to see them disappointed:
ARE YOU PEOPLE CRAZY? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
(Now wait to see who takes that seriously. Won’t take long.)
06:59 he may be for some people but I could stand this guy for about 90 seconds and I would have to tap out.
I agree, nobody wants to call Mom.
